A Good Scythe at Work

- Short scenes demonstrating the versatility of a good scythe in diverse conditions--from "lawn" and field cutting to an "obstacle course" requiring precision mowing techniques. No audio--it got lost in the editing process.
Some of the mowing is done by Ashley and Fairlight Vido. When this video was shot in 2003, they were 10 and 13 years old and already good mowers. They are not expending a lot of energy, because they have good tools and have learned the skill.

It maws, it kills, it makes me lose weight, it keeps me in tip-top shape, it serves as that special extra for my Halloween outfit, and it keeps me and my family closer together.
What a great tool!
Yeah and if you need to get rid of some undesirable person, all you have to do is dress accordingly with the right costume and use your scythe.
they are doing it wrong, you suppose to use it on people while wearing a black robe. not wasting time and dulling the blade on grass.
it does look really calming to watch, strange but I can see my self choosing a scythe over machines personally
I still have a few of my Dads Scythe's. . .unfortunately they just hang as relics in the machinery shed now. . . They haven't been used since the 1930s. . .He replaced his team of horses and hand tools with a JD model B and No. 5 Sickle mower in 1937. I can remember him hammering/peening the blade with a special stand and hammer he carried around with him in the field. I can still remember the sound. Great video, you brought back a lot of memories for me.
Да, сейчас этот инструмент забывается. Знаю пожилых уже людей, которые умеют отбивать - править косу. Но они уходят... в вечность
You should use them.
This is oddly relaxing to watch...
1:05 - It's good to see Willie Nelson working! 😂
Wish this had sound. I love that swishing/slicing sound they make.
The smell is devine. I love the smell in the morning. Great therapy for people with anger issues. So as chopping wood
I played some dubstep over the top of it
@hellzanetruesdale - How safe? You mean as opposed to a rotary lawn mower? Any idea how many emergency room visits each year from both push & riding mowers each year??? Or a string trimmer? It's pretty difficult to hurt yourself with a scythe as the stances and motions never put a body part in the path of the blade.
Blades and bare feet. The blade is in front of the mower at all times. Country etiquette is when the mowers would stop to eat, if doing communal harvesting, the scythes would be laid in the unmowed crops, and it was a given not to be fooling around in that area, as to get hurt. You never laid a scythe down where you have already mowed.
Beautiful! No noise, no gas or electricity, no cords, excellent maneuverability, excellent speed... This is simply ELEGANT.
Dear God! If the comments on this page are any indication of the intelligence of the world these days, we are all in trouble. If it's not a comment trying to be funny in a pathetic plea for attention, it's a demeaning or judgemental one on life choices or farm equip.placement. I found it informative and it answered the question that Google got me here with. Grow up haters! These people are experts at a dying art!
You are sooooooooo right. I too particularly disdain the "comment trying to be funny in a pathetic plea for attention". They are EVERYWHERE on TH-cam.
The problem is, is that such thrash distracts from the topic at hand. In this case, it is actually a really important one environmentally, not to mind enjoyable, incredibly economical, inexpensive and gets you outside and moving around and exercising.
I notice that the scythe does not have to move fast, nor with much force, in order to cut effectively. I have to re-tool my approach to this.
Same here, haha... XD
I should finally ditch my cheapo scythe with alu snath aswell and finally get a good one thats also adequate for my height...
Yes, I found I was under sharpening my scythe. Even though it was 'sharp' and 'worked', after reading some material on blade sharpening, I found that 'sharp' really isn't sharp. I jig peened and stoned the blade to the point I could push receipt paper across the blade and slice it, and at that point the blade severs the grass with almost no momentum at all.
The duller the blade, the user tends to compensate with a more energetic swing.
Uh-oh! After reading how goddamn sharp you make your scythe..... seVERELY undersharpened scythe RIGHT here!!
Will have to buy a peening jig. Up until now, my scythe was pretty sharp when compared to a sharp knife, but no way NEAR as sharp as you describe! Jesus...
maxdecphoenix ; Thank- you for sharing that with us. It's good to know.
martialme84 no, you don't want a jig, you need a peening anvil and hammer (if you have a European-style scythe). The work required to use a jig to get anything approaching a usable blade for grasses with a jig unnecessarily high. I just used that as a means to convey the story to explain how sharp sharp must be. The anvil is actually much faster and produces a superior result in a fraction of the time. Sorry for the confusion.
6 oil barons are pissed your not using a "gas" mower~!
I guess this guy has no idea how popular his videos are.
I used to mown huge amounts of grass with this tool when I was a teenager at my granddad's farm...it's worth noticing that scythes have to be sharpened regularly and their blade has to be reset with a help of a hammer too. They are also very sharp and any mishandling could lead to a serious injury, so the person using it must be very thorough
....and i cant even get my wife to sit on the riding lawn mower ) :
@josh67220 The Grim Reaper first appeared in the middle ages during the plagues. There were pictures of men standing like wheat in a field, and he mowed them down like sheaves of wheat. So I guess the skeletal "reaper" was really the black death or something, rather than just any kind of random death, when it was first invented.
Yes...the peaceful farmers' weapon!
Yes, they are European scythes and yes, the motions and stances are principally the same for both kinds.
This video is absolutely fascinating. I've never actually seen one used in practice. I am amazed at how fluid and smooth it works even on the nearly shoulder length grass and brush. Very... /very/ neat video, thank you for uploading!
Amezing, strong girls, welling to work and full of joy.
In Albania this tool is called KOSA. In Albania we do the same thing.
What country is this? 🇦🇱👍🇽🇰
this is easily one of the most amazing things i have ever seen.
Nothing posted for the last number of years. Sure wish you'd return with your inspirational and educational videos
I fell in love with the Vido family since I saw Living Lightly! They are living my dream! Please tell me this is their channel??? I think it is now that I see the videos! Please update us with some new videos! 👍
1:01 Willy Nelson?
If you’ve ever used a scythe you would know what back breaking work it is. I must admit that it’s good to see young children learn the old way.
its only back breaking if you haven't set up the scythe properly to suit yourself, if you haven't been properly trained and if the blade is blunt.
Unfortunately, toxic Hollywood/New York has apparently made being stupid and rude fashionable.
sharp tool. a smart man works the tool, the tool works a dumb man
I am so glad to see this! Ever since I read the book, The Scythe Book from our library, I have wanted to get one, but didn't think husband would go along with it. I think when he sees this he will want one.
He is getting right under those logs and farm equipment! And, what? He's barefooted with that sharp blade! Yet, with control over the blade, he's safe apparently. Thanks! I'm going to go watch all your other scythe videos.
very cool. great core workout too!! imagine if everyone used one! you'd be as trim as your lawn!
I can't wait to mow my lawn like this!!!!
Sorry you lost your sound... I know this stuff can be frustrating! Lord. But I loved the video - I just got my scythe and the blade seems to be pointed too upward, I think I need to bend it a bit and also bend my knees a lot more. Can't wait to learn it! Thanks for the video...
david
great video!! I'm learning how to use this tool :-)
This shows how symbolic the scythe is (referring to the grim reaper)
It's reaping (harvesting) crops
Like how the reaper harvests souls...
wow, better than an expensive lawn mower.
Thanks so much for these videos! Just ordered a scythe from scytheworks and will need to keep coming back to your videos to check your technique! These are so helpful to me.
I have one of those scythe things, I am not good at sharpening it plus at 76 years old I make two swings and I am tired.
I too want to be a moutain hippie guru and live with all my wives and daughters
Now rake it up!
willie nelson cutting his weekly supply
They sure made short work of that chore, (and not a drop of burned motor-fuel!). Nice to see a family project instead of all on one person.
@rpmartin1886 I've seen 80-90 year old man scything...and they worked with them all their life. But they were living a natural life, someone who makes phisical movement only by opening his laptop 3 times a day and opening his cars door 10 times a day and eats youknowwhatkindof food will not be able to do that
Sheesh, now I passionately hate weedeaters and whoever convinced us that they are better, with that noise, stones jumping at you, smell of fuel. Aahhh modernity..
(guy comes in with a lawn mower you can ride and everyone is like)
"WHAT THE FUCK THATS NOT FAIR"
p.s was this some kind of scythe triathalon
I was using a crappy weed wacker to knock down grass today, and all I could think about was how much I would rather be holding a scythe.
well my first time to post my ideas with thje scythe tool i have seen this video today and got we dont need the motor or oil to cut the grass. we are ready to plant the cleaned fields. thanks to scythes. no fear for snakes and no problems with the stones.
Anyone know a good store I can get one with a wooden shaft (handle, pole). I can only find a metal one.
How tall (how long) is the grass in inches after cutting with the scythe??
tkjazzer depends on the curve of the blade, most average around 1.5 inches (3-4cm)
Now, unless I'm mistaken, these are European scythes. Do the same motions and stances apply to the heavier British scythes?
Welcome to the 21st century, Its called a lawnmower. John Deere perhaps...
Fabulous, thanks for posting this just what I needed to see.
very nice
Young girls with scythes, don't think it gets much more horrifying haha.
I think that they got a new kind o machine for that i think its called a lawnmower or a weed whacker hahah
Cool! I have never seen one used. Great demo of many types of situations. Better than a smoke spueing weed wacker. My lawn mower is shot and I need to replace. This would be great to learn how to do instead. Thanks!
my job does not want us to use machetys to clear brush thay are afraid we will use them for wepons
Ten čo ich klepal bol MAJSTER.
A scythe will not bale up the fawns that are hiding
sweeet but since i can't have one i still preffer my old and rusty machete acapulqueño
Who ever finishes last doesn't eat tonite..👏😅👏
Couldn't afford to walk on the slinging blade...bye bye foot
I love your work......Amazing!!!,....Thanks from Peru
dude, long grasss...could encounter a fight with a pokemon man, really gotta watch it.
Wow barefoot and all. Snakes must not be a problem there or he's fearless.
Willy Nelson?
Didn't know he knew how to scythe 😂
euphoria levels off the charts!
going to be having my family doing this in a few months, moving to ME and starting a totaly green farm, from solar heat to boi ponds for methane, using only human or animal power for everything, need to start looking in to good scythe for mowing and harvesting, what do you requamend? what type for mowing, what type for wheat harvest?
Fantastic!
wait how did a farmers tool....become a skeleton's weapon the reaps souls?
I have dreams of living in community of people living like this.. Taking care of the land that they live off. I didn't think that there were any places left like that...
look at that old hippy. he is like his own caricature. just ridiculous.
guys what should i do if some one in a hood is walking with one of these?
I know you're demonstrating the versatility of the scythe at 3:00, but if you hauled that old trailer to the dump you wouldn't have to trim under it.
No snakes out there? They mow barefoot
I have a quinta in central Portugal and need to mow a small field. This video shows me exactly how to do it - I think! Thanks so much for making it.
@ohiovr It's easy for the first 50 strokes. After that the muscles kinda get tired, but you get way more tone than with push ups ;).
Love this video. good work.
A full Scythian army ? Great work !
it looks fun but must also be very tiring and time consuming
@Andreas748
Of course!
Long grass, good job man u are prepared for any pokemon battle u are encountered with good work.!
Can anybody tell me what type of scythe is used in the video, the handle looks more efficient than on any other scythe I've seen.
Skumpaj, looks kind of like the Austrian style with the raised middle handle but they also look kind of home made from thin branches
For some reason, this looks like a music video.
some tips for avoid the slashing? this tool seems very sharp, and the feet run in a great risk
@hellzanetruesdale You would need to be an extreme split to harm yourself with this :D
☺👍👍👍give me one. Alguiria.
never do this with no shoes lol
Lord, what can the Harvest hope for, if not for the care of the Reaper Man?
is it just me that are trying to see if a scythe would be good as weapon?
Dude, the trailer has wheels, just move it.
Guess what happens when he finds a snake....
That looks easy! Maybe easier than it looks...
wouldnt wanna get ur feet caught in the sweep
@kaivido against the hordes of evil grass?
specially designed scythes
We use a cross between a sickle and scythe where I come from, called a "sundang". Looks like the scythe would have been a better tool, less back-breaking. You'll have a few inches head start if you end up uncovering a snake too.
Das ist die umweltfreundlichste und nachhaltigste Familie der Welt.
EXCELLENT !!! I'd like to know more about these people....!
Very informative , my favorite , Thanks for posting
blessings~
LOL, is that how they mow the lawn?
