  • Are you thinking of Moving to Medellin Colombia? In today's video I sat down with @Life with David to find out why he decided to leave the US to come live in Medellin Colombia.
    Many Americans like him are now thinking about living international lifestyles as it becomes clearer that work can be done remotely in many cases.
    In this video, David tells me what drew him to Medellin specifically, why so many expats prefer it to other Colombian cities, how much his life here is costing him, and many more details about living in Medellin...
    If you're considering moving to Colombia, check out what he has to say!

    Medellin is more and more a city planned for the tourists and foreigners in general. As Colombian (Medellin born) man I have to say this is my place in the world, I love my city, but still I recognize that the life for regular paisas have many struggles. Foreigners here experience some kind of bubble where the most modern, fashionable and clean Medellin is present everyday, the rest of population have to live the best they can.

      This is the world itself. Happens in the USA for example where I live in Florida it's the same I live east of US 1 and life is good just west of US 1 the hood. Two completely different realities. I've lived both experiences and that's not common. The main difference is exposure to information and the willingness to try to do things differently.

    I have lived in Medellin for 8 years. His rent is a lot higher than needs to be, but it is a personal preference. I prefer to keep my rent low and use more money on entertainment.
    I rent a room in an AirBNB for $150/month (Estadio) but I know the guy and I have a great deal worked out (Which is an advantage of living here). I spend $300 on food and the rest on entertainment. I am averaging $750/month. A single man can easily live on less than $1000. I think David offers a good overall description of what life is like. I can not emphasize how important speaking Spanish is and I am glad he mentioned it.

    Great video. Colombian here, lived in Medellin for 6 months with my bf from the US and is curious to see he had the same cultural shock, until one day I told him “well this is not the U.S” problem solved 😂… oh and about the Exito points, you just create an account on their website or request it at the cashier once and after that you just give your ID number and you get the points automatically, that’s why we don’t need a physical card.

    • @Karl__Pierre
      @Karl__Pierre  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool but the physical card is much faster. In the US you register and get a card with barcode. You swipe it with the groceries so it's faster instead of asking you simply swipe. It saves about 7 seconds lol

      Honestly as an American, I'm a truck driver and I got through many different truck stops and random gas stations and they all support and promote their own rewards cards. I have a few memberships, but most of the time I actually just tell them my name and phone number. To me it's just as easy as pulling out my wallet and pulling out my rewards card and swiping it. Most the time my cards are severely worn from rubbing. So it's easier for me to just tell the cashier my name and or phone number.

      Colombian here, Tax brackets in colombia start at 0%, 12% all the way up to 39% depending on your income. sales tax is 19% all over the country for almost any product or service. Highest tax bracket is at around usd50k/yr. If you are from the US you still have to file for the IRS.

      @Karl__Pierre  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @j.lizbardo
      @j.lizbardo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Karl__Pierre there is a tax treaty between US and CO. CO will report your every move to the US . You will be tracked as soon as you open a local bank account or acquire ANY financial product (insurance, bank account, credit card etc. own any property (think real estate, ownership of a local company or vehicles) also if you invoice anyone locally, there is the digital invoicing required, so they can track any earnings) So, if you earn income abroad from your services or products, you would be better off if you could only use your atm card from say bank of america and withdraw from a CO atm. Also you may use your US credit card in CO and it will not be tracked by the CO's IRS equivalent (DIAN).
      ATMs here have daily limits on withdrawals which are between (usd250-350) depending on the bank.
      If you use a CO credit card, the CO DIAN will keep track of your expenses and if you pass a certain threshold of expenses and have no declared income in CO, you will be taxed based on how much you spend.
      Suppose you have an ENTP LLC (as an example) in the US and you are the sole owner. When you move to CO, the headquarters of your LLC have also moved to CO. Therefore, your US ENTP LLC is now a mixed jurisdiction legal entity... For which you would be required to declare to DIAN.
      After this explanation, it should be evident that CO tax system is A. No pic-nick and B. Quite nasty. Nothing to sneeze at when compared to the IRS.
      So, if you have a small, one man show LLC in the US with not alot of annual income (say 50K per year) then do everything possible to keep under the radar from DIAN. If your operation is larger... I would recommend you hire a tax lawyer to help you out. The good ones (usually have a masters in the US or UK) speak english and have some knowledge of the US or UK tax law and also have some friendly tax lawyer in those jurisdictions because they'll need to interact with them to solve questions. Prices for those tax lawyers are around usd (90-130hr) while the equivalent in the US may be around (450-550/hr)
      How will you be taxed in both jurisdictions?
      Supose you teach english in a CO school and they pay you in a CO bank account. And you make usd 15k/yr. You will be required to pay taxes in CO for the usd15k CO income tax bracket. However, that tax bracket is higher than that of the 15k tax bracket in the US. As a result you will only endup paying income tax in colombia because the CO tax bracket is higher than in the US. The difficulty begins when you have multiple sources of income and understanding HOW and WHAT to whom those reports are sent to.
      Hope this helps mildly in answering your question.

      Hi, you should do a comparison of your life in LA and your life in Medellin. To give you some perspective, the mortgage on my home is 6k a month, childcare 2800. That doesn't include vehicles, housekeeping food, dining out, travel. For the equivalent lifestyle, it would run me about 4k in Medellin. So it's a matter of lifestyle. To your point, 3500 might be = to life in Beverly hills.

    Bro, if you gonna have a TH-cam channel about Colombia you need to learn how to pronounce "Medellin" 😉

      Why do Spanish speakers call Germany Almania when the Germans call their country Deutschland... I say it with an American accent and until I improve it it will be as it is.

      There are times when people are speaking live and make mistakes while talking on the fly it happens to me all the time. Doesn't happen to you?

    what he said at the end you need to listen to and learn, I was always told "anyone can truck drive" "I can drive, i love driving" these same people payed $2000 to $9000 for their CDL just to not being to handle "driving" truckin chose me just like columbia and moving chose him. I bet he gets alot of "i can afford to live there" "its cheaper" only for them to move aND not be able to hack it lolololol
