  • I stay in The Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the ninth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which? It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!

I have had the dubious experience of staying in many of these hotels when I travelled daily for my work around the uk. There was a woman in our office who thought she was doing us a favour by booking us into these places rather than the Lodges and Inns that we preferred. She did not last long !!

The hotel was originally owned by the Russell Cotes family who lived in Eastcliff Hall (now the Russell Cotes Museum) next door. In the museum there are some wonderful photographs of the hotel in its heyday in the early 1900s. Like Eastcliff Hall it was lavishly decorated with painted ceilings, frescoes and had many decorative details, such as the beautiful stained glass. The Russell Cotes’ were avid collectors of bric a brac and paintings from all over the world. A lot of the contents of the old Royal Bath are now on display in the museum. Really interesting video, thank you!

This hotel used to be fabulous and I'm so sad to see how the standards have sunk so low. In the seventies it was THE place to stay, beautiful rooms, fabulous food, staff all uniformed etc. So many famous people stayed too but, now it's shocking to see. You're right, it does have a few ghosts but they are friendly ones and just a little curious.

I worked in Bournemouth between 1980 and 83. It already had a bad reputation locally for being dirty and underpaying staff. Rumour was it was closed by environmental health for serious cockroach infestation and dirty bedrooms. It had been The place to stay in the past. The cockroaches, they existed at one of the places I worked in so I believed it.

My daughter had her wedding reception in The King's Hall - it really is a beautiful setting for a reception. However, the honeymoon suite, which they booked for the night, smelt very badly of mould, and was very small. I'm just looking at you walking the gardens right now, which is where the afternoon reception was meant to be held, but it rained. The staff very quickly took everything into the King's Hall. The service was good, but the following day, when daughter went to get her veil from the hall, the cleaner had put it in a bin bag with the rubbish. Yes, now looking at the beach, where the photographer thought it would be a great idea to take the photos. Have to be honest, I would never set foot inside it again. These reviews you do are so good for the detail. Having stayed in many hotels all over the world, I must admit our U.K. offering is very poor in quality of rooms and food is usually pretty poor. These once very posh hotels were very good back in the day, but sadly the hotel stock in the U.K. is very variable. The price of course dictates what you are going to get. The sadness is the once old grand hotels are not what they once were.

Shame to see what it looks like now, but it’s nice to see a video where you can see glimpses of its former glory. There have been a lot of attempts by people to try and have it replaced or at least rejuvenated but this has consistently been blocked by the owners and the council (most of whom being rather old themselves only seem to remember the glory days rather than seeing it through more critical eyes)

Given the full signature Britannia deal of mega-shite service, even more mega-shite food, rooms that aren't cleaned properly - or at all. What a treat, eh? 🙄
I stayed at this hotel in 2004, when it really WAS superb, when De Veret group owned it. The rooms all had minibars, bathrobes, safes and trouser press, hairdryer, etc.
What you expect in a supposed four star hotel.
You may not be aware, Tim, but the Tourist Board stripped it of four stars, within a year of Britannia taking it over, such was the breakneck pace of DECLINE in quality.
That is how long it takes shite Britannia to totally DESTROY the reputation of any grand hotel they manage to get their paws on.

Ten or twelve years ago, my partner used to have training for work in Bournemouth a few times a year and this was by far the nicest Hotel on the list of ones they were allowed to use. I would always go with because it was only an extra £10 a night to add me on, including breakfast.
We usually had the same room on the ground floor as it was disability friendly for me. That room was gorgeous, huge and had a beautiful view.
We never ate any meals there other than breakfast, so I can't comment on that, but we always were very satisfied with the breakfast buffet. I was honestly always sad to go when the training was over!
The last time I was there was about 8 or 9 years ago as those kinds of training sessions no longer happen.
The only thing I could complain about when we went was that there was no free disability parking with a blue badge anywhere, but that's not the hotel's fault.

Sadly it seems to be falling into disrepair and as I've said in some of your previous reviews, you are far to tolerant with your comments. that pillow almost made me vomit, surely the cleaner must have seen that when she changed the pillow case. Regardless of what grade of room you book and we all know that you book these rooms on a budget, it should include at the very least, all the basics what you seemed to have, table, chair, desk, cupboard, dressing table, television, telephone, coffee/tea maker and a private bathroom. So sad to see how much it has declined since being taken over everything looks exactly as it was nearly 30 years ago so obviously they have just run it into the ground. I just found your channel last night and I’m going through this playlist.
It’s really sad to see these magnificent buildings struggling with upkeep or someone not wanting to put enough money in beyond the basics. I think it was the first hotel you went to, where you were given a key rather than a key card. I was stunned! A card reader is generally considered far safer than a key. So I wasn’t surprised when you later said some kids/teens broke into a lower room and flooded it. It’s a serious security risk.
What’s frustrating is some of these issues are basic issues. Like in this hotel, they took the time to neatly fold the tp but didn’t bother to clean the counter. Folded tp is nice but that’s probably the last thing I care about in staying at a hotel. I think I speak on everyone’s behalf in saying we’d rather a safe, clean hotel over fancy toilet paper.

Having stayed there I would agree the overall feel is that the place is tired and needs a lick of paint etc, some of that review was about feeding a narrative.

I would not call this one of the worst hotels. Once elegant, it's getting shabby and worn. I could excuse that bed but not the stained bed linens. Still, the staff is making an effort to make the place habitable. I was surprised that the lights were on in some empty areas. Because of its classic style and the location right on the beach, with some renovation/restoration, this hotel could again be worth staying at.

I worked there in the late 80's when it was a top 5* Hotel owned by De Vere......the place was full of very professional staff at the top of their game hence the quality and service was 2nd to none. Stars and celebrities would stay there who were performing in Bournemouth, from professional snooker players, music industry bigwigs - a young Simon Cowell, George Michael, Status Quo and actors, diplomats and the Conservative Party Conference! The way it's gone downhill since then is nothing short of a tragedy and my heart breaks 💔 😢 whenever I drive past it!
Oh Btw......PS - The room you're in is the old staff canteen....that whole corridor was once all back of house offices and are.....chefs changing room, housekeeping office, managers offices, financial control offices, staff canteen, managers canteen, staff toilets, celler for barrels of draught beer, staff entrance via garage, rear stairs to the Buckaneer bar (now the sports bar), dry stores, rear of kitchens, staff quarters fire escape!

Don’t forget even the most exclusive hotel is still recovering from Covid, it decimated the industry and now imagine the electric and heating costs for these huge buildings. A prominent hotelier, in the business 50 years recently said any hotel is for sale at the moment for the right price for an exit. Sadly I believe standards will slip a lot more before they get better.

I lived in Bournemouth and had friends that stayed there and said the rooms were awful and also a couple of friends said they had experienced something they couldn't explain. I does look it needs a good facial make over outside and it always surprises me why they spend so much on the appearance as you walk in and not on the rooms and restaurant.
This is important to get people coming back, but I use to work in a pub opposites a huge hotel in Westbourne, which is now apartments I believe and we use to get a lot of coach parties from up north and get a cheap 3 day deal and come over to us and spend a fortune, so maybe the Royal Bath has become the new place to go.
I have been thinking of going back down to Bournemouth for a few days and considering staying there, but now I'm not so sure!

This place is nasty. You could not pay me enough. I know it has a lot of nice period pieces but if the whole place cannot be cleaned to a decent standard then that’s a no no for me. I would literally demand a refund and go to a Premier Inn.

My Mum grew up in Bournemouth and it was so posh that in the 70s we couldn't even afford to go there for a cup of tea and a cake. We had to go to a local cafe 😅. As a kid I loved driving past and seeing the uniformed staff at the entrance. Years later I got to run a business conference there. The door staff were long gone but the sea view room I was given was good quality. It seems to have gone badly downhill since then (2009). My Mum was very proud I got to stay there in the end. The problem is, we want to see these old grand and historic seaside hotels survive but we go abroad for cheap holidays. The two things are simply not compatible. Shame though.

How many of these old high maintenance hotels are going to survive once the older generation have passed, They just won't be a viable business proposition and will almost certainly will be converted into flats, A shame but the only future for them in my opinion.

Its very central to bmth, the gardens in front of the Pavilion theatre are beautiful and worth a visit and lead to the centre of Bournemouth proper. The Royal Bath is closer to the beach and the cinemas and arcades, very victorian and very lovely, also the buses are all central there.

I feel sorry for this hotel.. The front entrance part was built in the 1800. And over the years it got added onto but sadly when doing this it lost its charm and identity but I think this was to do with different owners taking it over and not caring about it and also lots of new hotels and B&B’s in the area killed it? someone said it started going down hill late 60s early 70s.. the room you had I think would of had a view but the added a building on at some point.. that grand hall looks very 1920s. Some of the building is listed so they can’t do anything with it.. at least you can still see the beach :) I’m guessing people stay there still as they got it so cheap?
Bournemouth has lost its image over the years to many brand new builds that ruin the sea view and also building lots of high rise student buildings.. it’s now known as a student/stag and hen venue and not really a family beach location anymore :(

My mum and I were on a coach trip to Bournemouth about 4 years ago. Stayed in a hotel a bit further from the town centre. Was nice enough but the lift was only the size of a single wardrobe. We walked into town one day and popped into the royal Bath hotel to use the loo. From what we seen it looked quite posh and we were fairly impressed. Glad we have now seen behind the public areas. Just hearing it's a Brittania hotel says it all really.
