  • I stay in The Royal Hotel Scarborough owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the Tenth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?
It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!
The chain has 61 hotels across Britain, including Blackpool’s Metropole and Norbreck Castle, and Scarborough’s Grand Hotel.

The rates have to be so low to be competitive in areas like Scarborough, Skeggy, Blackpool etc. I know there are a lot of rooms but I'd be surprised if there was much profit after staffing and building costs etc. You would think if they invested and sorted these places out that Britannia could charge more. Then again, it wouldn't turn the places into luxury, just a standard to be expected from a hotel.

    • @shutup2751
      @shutup2751 ปีที่แล้ว +26

As a Scarborian, this doesn’t surprise me. There’s only one place even worse than this, and it’s the Grand Hotel that you show in the start of this video. Ironically, also run by Britannia. This town has suffered immensely at the cost of the council. The locals get it worse, believe me. There’s bugger all here for us and communities. They’re so focused on the holiday seasons, yet it baffles me how what used to be the two most prestigious hotels here, are now run by kids and the standards are barely passable, if at all.

Bah! Nothing! Not as bad as a hotel I stayed in near Cairo, where the concierge threw somebody's clothes out of a room and, without even changing the filthy bed sheets, gave it to me. He also showed me the toilet. Pushing in the door, we came face to face with a man standing on the toilet brim having a dump because there was no seat and the bowl was filled to the top with pee and turds. Or how about the Al Sewrah, Aleppo, where I killed a cockroach behind the bedroom sink to find it still there a year later? Or some hotel in Luxor, where what I first though was pretty floral wall paper were the many bloody remains of mosquitos squashed on the wall. The Royal Hotel? What's your problem? Luxury.

I worked in this hotel about 17 years ago (2006), while I was a student at the University of Hull’s Scarborough Campus - which has now shut down.
The hotel was under English Rose, not Britannia back then and was better, but still had some maintenance issues. The owner at the time, lived upstairs in a converted apartment on the top floor. She had died now and her son sold it on.
I went back with my children in 2021 and stayed in one of the suites. It was so disappointing. Filthy windows, rotting window frames, French doors which did not close properly and had a gaping hole where the handle should have been. From afar, things looked good - but close up, it was absolutely dire.
Housekeeping had not cleaned the room well at all, but the bed was clean and comfortable, I guess…

However, I have stayed there myself recently and it was very nice; the breakfast was worth the £12 fee as it was lovely. The best thing for me was , as we explored the halls, one of the sets of doors had the best handles I've ever seen - brass and emerald green glass - I've never seen anything like them they were lovely.

Everything looks grand from the entrance and the ground floor reception/eating areas but as you make the ascent wow does everything start to go downhill. I have only ever stayed in Britannia hotels with a coach travel company. One of the problems for these sort of old big properties is that they don't really make any money from providing the accommodation and meals from coach trips. So what happens? No money left over to do the cleaning and repairs. Barely enough to cover wages. The property virtually stands still in time. Will anything change. Tim will tell. (Sorry time will tell).

I don't get what all the whinging is about. It's dated and a bit shabby, but that is just what British budget hotels tend to be like. There's something grand and opulent about these ancient seaside hotels, and they are significantly nicer to stay in than budget hotels in London. Having stayed at this or the nearby Grand Hotel (not sure which - I suspect the latter) for Fantasycon By The Sea (a fandom convention that took place in both hotels), I found them marvellous. Their locations were second to none. There's an ambience of aged decadence, like old ladies wearing tatty dresses from their youth, drinking gin, surrounded by empty bird cages, porcelain kitsch and stuffed cats. These hotels feel wonderfully atmospheric. As a guest, you sort of expect to be drawn into a murder mystery or perhaps a Gothic tale of terror. One should have a bit of a sense of adventure, then these hotels are very enjoyable indeed.
I suspect the real problem is that because of their Royal and Grand names and somewhat low definition photos, these bargain basement hotels attract guests with posh expectations, who are then shocked to find themselves in a place where service & maintenance levels are commensurate with the prices charged.

Looked alright to me Tim. especially for the price paid. The rates charged in these hotels are commercially suicidal, but the sheer amount of competition ensures rates cannot rise. Perhaps Britainnia's plan is to stay alive long enough to see off a lot of the competition thus allowing rates to rise and investment increase.
All I know is I wouldn't want to be in this business. If Britannia weren't keeping the lights on in these creaking old buildings, who else would be?

It almost seems like it was converted or partially converted into long term rentals or a boarding house style accommodations at one point but has since been reversed without renovating. It would explain the walk-in closet, abundant bathroom storage and mail slot.
My friend lived in a hotel that in the off season did longer term rentals but during peak tourist season was a short term hotel/BnB. They catered to the students from a school that ran their semesters October to March but would then go and do placements the other 6 months of the year so it was win win. Gives me similar vibes.

Iv worked in hotels for over 10yrs and that is the grimmest room iv ever seen. Cobwebs and splatter marks and anything that needs cleaning in general is all down to the hotel so the cleanliness is the hotels responsibility. People will make a mess in those rooms but it's again its the hotels duty to clean it. I'd run a mile if they gave me that room

Such a Beautiful old building deserves better care inside the rooms. The bathroom was amazing but all those cobwebs would have me running. Presumably they haven't heard of feather dusters? If they upped their game, more would stay and thus create revenue to do the place up. Britannia no doubt wouldn't think of that though.

Respect to you for the impartiality of your reviews; you could have gone savage on this place but instead acknowledge the positives as much as the negatives, which makes your appraisal much more interesting.

Even though we had the better bedroom the views we had was back of the kitchens windows would not open, bed was uncomfortable and breakfast very greasy. I know they have Christmas markets their. The hotel design is grand and beautiful. It cost a tremendous amount of money to properly keep any older building in shape, and it seems to have slipped a bit, but fine, however, room cleanliness cannot under any circustances be acceptable. I do not understand the color palette. The bright blue and green walls, with deep red carpets and area rugs is simply offensive. Great camera work! Cheers!
