Awesome job @solodallas , I’m more into Mal’s stuff but I have a problem: I play a 75’ Super Bass pretty much Stock through a 1960 BX Cab loaded with G25s. For guitar I use a Gretsch G5655 Center Block Double Cut with a stock Filter’Tron. But the thing is that I don’t really get THAT tone (oriented at the 2001-2003 live sessions). Until I get to Volume 4-5 the amp has a really high gain for a Super Bass. It isn’t clean at all anymore. Also I don’t have that typical ‘brightness’ if you know what I mean. So what do you think could the issue (s) be ?? I’d really appreciate your helping :)
Hi Tom sorry only seen this now. You seem to have all the right things but the speakers; I think Mal was NOT using greenbacks anymore in 2001 (earlier than that in fact) as he was using massively V30s (vintage 30s). The V30s are a way tougher speaker, with very little of vintage in fact; they are a product of the 1990s if I remember well. They are a 'mid-scooped' speaker which will really take you where you want to be; you will be shocked. They do not saturate as easily as the lighter greenbacks and as a consequence of them being intentionally mid-scooped, they offer brightness in spades. THIS will help you. Fil
Actually You Man, you are a hero too. I enjoy watching your videos, gears and your work. The work for this community, for the true rock and roll. Im in middle EU from a far away and poor country, but hell I will try to get your stuff Man.
I love this but also would like to know more about Mals tone and gear used on the album. I hear he played White Falcon, but in any event, his sound was the foundation. Have you tried getting that tone? Would appreciate any leads to Mals sound!
VERY glad you asked me this. Yes, we have been working on Mal's sound as well - for quite some time. Not as long as on Angus'; but definitely for a while. If you - for example - went to some of our recent covers here on this same channel, you'd see that we try as hard as we can - even going to original equipment as much as possible. In this respect, I can tell you that we used and use, two original Marshall Superbass amplifiers from the 1970s (like Mal); a few Gretsches, of which one original Firebird from 1962 (Mal's was from 1963). A master built Gretsch Malcolm Young Signature Jet and a couple more signatures. This was definitely Mal's signature and basic setup; but not the only one. As microphones, much of the early Malcolm sounds were captured with Neumann U47FET which was the microphone of choice at Albert Studios in Sydney; Mal started using Celestion G12-65s in about 1978-1979 and used them for a long time. As a general rule, Malcolm loved 'mid scooped' speaker types, because they would help him clean up his clean-dirty sound to a more polished level. I hope this information will help you a bit!
SoloDallas oh wow! That helps a lot! First off that he used a Superbass amp. That might explain his ballsy tone from just a bridge pickup? I don’t think to be able to afford all that hear but it is very inspiring to start experimenting with what I have: Fender Tele Plus into Fender Deville (jcm type pedals of course :)
@@AndyNyle JCM type amplifiers are way too gainy for what you're looking for. I am really talking about clean sounds, on the edge of breakup - very elusive and very desirable. The hardest sound of all. Many try and fail. Tele I think is a great substitute for a Gretsch; you may want to install heavy gauge of strings, make the action as low as you can (Mal had a very low action and 12-56 gauge strings in the last decades) and go at it. Have fun!
Kane, if we had chosen 1970s technology for the wireless (in order for it to be a real replica) it would have been a huge failure: outdated, obsolescent and even nowadays, ILLEGAL FM technology. Now, adding modern wireless technology to it ourselves would have been a huge mistake as well, since we have great, truly transparent DIGITAL wireless systems that work great. We're were ONLY in the sound of the original system - that's what we wanted to capture (and have). If you want to go winless, just go Shure and add us to the chain as you would with any other guitar pedal/effect. Thanks!
Love Fil. What he has done to bring the AC/DC sound in to the homes and stages of guitarists all over the world can not be underestimated. Its always left to the little guy to make a difference. He does it because it is his passion! Commercial interests only do it for profit.
I used to go to the a/v library in college pre computer /internet days in 1981 and listen to the Back in Black album over and over with headphones and would get stares at me rockin out to it there in the lounge area!I didn't care a bit because I loved those songs! 🤘💓
Giovanni, you seem Italian - your English was great. I assume you do live outside of North America (US/Canada), so unfortunately you can not win this one. I don't like saying it but I have to: it's the truth. It doesn't depend on me; in fact it doesn't depend on anyone at all; I wish (I keep on saying) I could put the finger on someone, even some company as a whole but once I learned the truth about this, I really couldn't: the 'fault' is due to the number of regulations that EACH nation that would have been participating has for 'contests'. This would have been an international contest and the rules to follow turned out to be just crazy: the deciding heads driving all this could simply not do it. It's really nobody's fault other than, today's world complexity. sorry about the bad news, Filippo
We do. The original system back in the day cost (indexing prices to today's for inflation etc.) around 17k to 22kUSD (today's USD) somewhere in there, the original, 1970s price was around USD4500 per SVDS, including one EX63 receiver, two X10 transmitters, cables etc.
I have a Replica that has been broken since the first week I bought it, it's been several years now. I have sent emails requesting assistance a couple times with no response. Maybe if I post here someone will help me.
OK, Fil got back to me asap and is replacing the defective unit immediately. He couldn't have been more accommodating. I was working with a specific rep from SoloDallas and sadly, it turns out he passed away a couple years ago, which obviously explains why I didn't hear back from him. If I had actively pursued this issue rather than occasionally emailing the person I had worked with, this would have been resolved long ago. It just goes to show that we don't always know what is happening behind the scenes and civil communication is essential. Thanks again SoloDallas!!!
Hey I just watched a video that gave a tour of the rig that Angus uses live and the Schaffer Tower Replica was indeed present! They even explained how Fil brought it to the studio.
@@SoloDallas It's sure it's both since it's your job. What I wanted to say is that it's the passion that brought you there today and when we discussed together I spoke with someone passionate and not someone whose his goal was to make as much money as possible. You sell great pedals and amps, you know your job and we can feel your passion ... Hello from France
So I use to get notification from SoloDallas, and I did not for this. I clicked on the bell and it said "This action is turned off for content made for kids". What's up with that?
The Schaffer Replica product line (just as its original counterpart, the Schaffer-Vega) increases the output signal as much as 30 decibels (thirty) of pure clean boost, tone-enhanced and audio-processed sonic goodness. Not really a subtle effect - however it can be as well. Best,
aw I really want to enter this, ac/dc got me into playing guitar and this would be amazing, the lads were born in the UK, your giving away that much moneys worth i'm sure u could ship the rig worldwide :(
THIS. is really the dream since I started playing guitar at age 8 because of Angus...it makes me cry it’s not for eu residents :( Fil is a great guy but this really sucks. Shattered is the best way to describe the feels...
I understand fully. Like, beyond fully; but I need you to know: it wasn't Angus' fault, or Sony's fault or Consequence of Sound's fault - and it wasn't certainly mine either. I am just 'providing' the rig to the companies-assembly that have created the contest; and I WILL ship out from my storage to the winner. Directly - but I don't get to decide (I didn't get to decide) anything else about the contest. When I asked WHY it had been restricted to North America only (US/Canada) I was fully explained that they had tried initially; but (listen carefully) the stupid amount of rules, laws and regulations PER country about international contests had made it *impossible* for them to deal with it all; they couldn't arrange it because intra-country it was too complex. That's the truth, that's the reality: as I always say, I would have loved to be able to put the finger on someone for failing us not letting us reach the whole world and yet I had to accept that it's really no-one's fault other than, the complexity of today's world.
@@SoloDallas thanks Fil for the honest answer, I really don't blame you at all. It's just that this rig has been my dream rig ever since I saw Angus doing that duckwalk and hearing his blistering solo's. I know I'll never get to meet him in person or get his autograph...that just breaks my heart. I can only be a little jealous at you for meeting him, but all in a positive way Fil. Even getting his autograph only would be a dream come true but I think it will stay with only a dream
Personally I've really been enjoying the 1979 live in Paris sound. I believe for that particular show they were using Marshall Master Volumes, and Angus was using a chord. I like back in black, and it's a great rock n roll tone, but personally, it's that live sound that I like. All their guitar tones are amazing, from High Voltage, to Let there be rock, to Powerage, to Back in Black to Flick of the Switch, it's all great, but on a person level, the Let there be rock sound and that live in Paris sound is what I wish to have. I have a Marshall Vintage Modern, with a Marshall 1960 super lead cabinet with greenback speakers, so really I've kind of got the sound, I'm just not allowed to turn in up in the house 😂
Great to be in touch with you. I am actually happy now I can take the chance and straighten a couple more 'facts'. I just want you to know what was used and when; you did mention Let There Be Rock" The Movie, and well - it was recorded with the same gear that had been used on the album "Highway To Hell", since the movie was 'just' one recorded performance (two, actually) in Paris during the Highway tour. First thing we have to keep in mind is, AC/DC's tradition (part of their process, 'the recipe', if you will) to use *the same* gear on the tour subsequent to a particular album that had just been released, in order to have a little tone-reminiscence from the album itself; this has been proved to be correct over the decades. Hence, the Highway Tour (as I was able to actually document) used as a *main* amplifier for Angus Young, a JTM50. Surprised? You shouldn't be. And it's documented (write me at sd@solodallas.com, will show you evidence). The JTM50 was sort of used as a master amplifier with other 'slave' amplifiers used to further amplify the sound for more wattage. The 'document' in my possession (from the French sound engineer that worked on the Paris show and hence, the movie itself) speaks of just one amplifier backstage, 50W amp with a great 'grain of sound' (which was then the same amplifier that would be used later on on Back in Black - a Marshall JTM50). There you go, we're all blown away with such profound misunderstanding and misconception that we have *all* been fooled into myself for first, for years) until I was able to uncover the truth. Also, the speaker types used on both Highway To Hell and Back in Black (albums and tours) were not at all "greenbacks", but the more rare Celestion G12-65s. In fact, if you check my recent videos, you will see (hear) that my tone matching techniques (using exactly the gear aforementioned) will resonate with you - I am certain of this. This being said... have fun with whatever you play with! Yours truly, Fil
@@SoloDallas From watching the movie, whether it be on TH-cam or the tape that I have, what's that Marshall called that Malcolm is standing next to? The 'Marshall' logo on it is bigger than the one that is on JTM45s or the other plexi's, and it doesn't have the 4 inputs, it only has two. I have this Marshall book that talks about Marshall's very first amps, and it goes over how Marshall created those amps way back in the 60s. And the one amp that I saw in that book, I've seen Malcolm and Angus use on stage in the late 70s. The Apollo Theater show, the show in Holland, AC/DC uploaded those three videos from Plug Me In last year, a couple of concerts up on youtube, one in Cleveland, Ohio, and the other at the Coliseum in Oakland, California. The amps that I see on stage look the amp that I described above. So I always thought, that amp they were using in the 70s was the new amp Marshall had come out with. It eliminated the 4 inputs where you had to daisy chain it to get that sound, and it gave you a volume, bass, treble, mid, and a master volume. That's the amp I thought they were using.
Lol I didn’t describe my other comment specifically but I heard that you were the band that was called “Assassins and Politics” and made a song called “It’s you last shot” and they said that you were the person that sang it. If you ever did can you do a remake please???
No no, I am with you myself; I think the 'newsboy hat' also helps providing that illusion; Brian loves those, too. I didn't really do it for that reason; I just love many things 'old school' including these hats and so I often wear them. Be well, Fil
Solodallas needs to make this Schaffer Replica pedal in a 1590A mini enclosure. The Pedal is why to big to put on my pedal board. I would prefer if there was dial controls to control how much of the wireless compression and expander you want. I think the 70s untils had internal trim pots to dial how much wireless gain, compression and expanding circuit you wanted. Mini 1590A pedal I would get it to save space on my pedal board.
Hello Fil, i am following the Schaffer Replica project for a long time. I apreciate your work, but i sone questions. Why there is constantly new schaffer replicas coming out? Since you reverse engineered the circuit of the original SVDS it shoudlnt be out there only one product? I know some of the replicas dont have the optical limiter that the original SVDS had. I know there must be many revisions of the original SVDS out there and trying to reverse engineer those should come some times with different results but i dont think that would make a huge difference in the circuit. I see that you are trying to fit it all in a pedal box so its "pedal player" friendly but theese versions should not be called replicas of the original SVDS. What do you think?
Thanks! I would answer you with this (the truth): trying to adjust our own chronology, first and foremost. The first ones weren't 100% accurate (the SVDS *was* very complex) and, although I stand by every single version we made, there have been improvements over the years. Now some improvements - most of them actually - are not even tone-sound-related: they are inner-optimizations that are meant to make them more robust (some initial ones had one of the opamps susceptible of being burned easily by current spikes, for example) and/or easier to put together for us (industry-standard-engineering-proof, factory-assembly-friendly etc.). You'd be surprised to see how *wild* the market is out there; and I am speaking strictly about factories that put our products together (we do not have our own factory and assembly lines, we rely on third party factories and have since the beginning and ALL of our Schaffer-line products are completely manufactured and assembled here in the US with no exceptions). However, this is not the US of A that I remembered growing up in; it's now pretty much a jungle (do you understand?) and to say 'it's not easy' would be equivalent to be telling you that life is a tale of princesses and princes. Get it? We also did name the products (at some stage) with their own names - although they were directly derived by (and always) the SVDS circuitry - but it didn't work and it confused the market further. So we eventually decided to have the entire product line be called 'the Schaffer line' and we offer: the *Classic*: our very first pedal, but internally optimized in a million ways (lower noise floor, strengthened opamp resistance to spikes, internal optimization for factory-production) including the option of three voltage types with 9V, 12V AND 15V (all center positive) by *design*. Pretty awesome! Used by so many in the studio including Muse. Then we introduced the Storm; the Storm was a by-product of the newer reverse engineering process of the Tower and we wanted also for the pedal to be *smaller* and 9V (strictly) *center negative*. It had to be center negative; most people's boards accept center negative blades. Done. Changed a couple of names, eventually settled on 'Schaffer Replica Storm'; it offers its own signature sound and, again, 9V center negative. In this day and age, prices matter. We needed something even cheaper - for everyone to potentially enjoy the *Schaffer Sound* and we added the SoloX. One knob: more or less of that sound. Done. Yes? Have fun, Fil
@@SoloDallas Hello, thanks for your awnser. As an electronics engineer i understand that you have to make some design changes in order to be easy to manufacture by the factory and lower the cost etc. I think many people dont really get the differences between the pedals/towers. As an ACDC fan myself i really dig that sound and even more the playing style of Angus which is more important than the gear/sound.
You can further saturate your love of guitar and keep your love of playing alive with a Schaffer replica. The whole world of notable players to basement hero’s, once plugging into a Schaffer replica knows it’s an ‘always on’ device from Angus to Mic’d xylophones...this circuit is the sauce of success in tone. Once you have one you wonder why you liked your sound before. Really. It’s that good.
SoloDallas Since I received my Schaffer replica and put it in my chain I’ve not only had the inspiration to play everyday but to play everyday for hours. Much love.
I wish I could have made it happen for all the world; Australia first in line (God knows how I love it 'down under') but it really was no-one fault here; the numerous contest rules-intra-nation have made it impossible for the organizers of this to make it happen. I wish, I wished I could have put the finger on someone - as I am involved in this myself - but truly it is no one's fault. Fil

Have fun!
Why isn't the replica a wireless system as well?
Kane, if we had chosen 1970s technology for the wireless (in order for it to be a real replica) it would have been a huge failure: outdated, obsolescent and even nowadays, ILLEGAL FM technology. Now, adding modern wireless technology to it ourselves would have been a huge mistake as well, since we have great, truly transparent DIGITAL wireless systems that work great. We're were ONLY in the sound of the original system - that's what we wanted to capture (and have). If you want to go winless, just go Shure and add us to the chain as you would with any other guitar pedal/effect. Thanks!

Haha - nah. Sound only. You can still add your own MODERN wireless technology. Use our products like pedals. Thanks,
Do you have an original system? And how much would one cost back in the day, also it sounds fucking awesome
We do. The original system back in the day cost (indexing prices to today's for inflation etc.) around 17k to 22kUSD (today's USD) somewhere in there, the original, 1970s price was around USD4500 per SVDS, including one EX63 receiver, two X10 transmitters, cables etc.

Asking WAY too much info for a contest; what are you doing with all this info?
All the schaefer box does is add a little bit of clean boost to the input !
The Schaffer Replica product line (just as its original counterpart, the Schaffer-Vega) increases the output signal as much as 30 decibels (thirty) of pure clean boost, tone-enhanced and audio-processed sonic goodness. Not really a subtle effect - however it can be as well. Best,
The Sound is unbelievable
aw I really want to enter this, ac/dc got me into playing guitar and this would be amazing, the lads were born in the UK, your giving away that much moneys worth i'm sure u could ship the rig worldwide :(
THIS. is really the dream since I started playing guitar at age 8 because of Angus...it makes me cry it’s not for eu residents :( Fil is a great guy but this really sucks.
He does now!
@@cs-7 Might have been an Amp Mal was using, live, it wasn't Angus' amplifier. Email me!

Mini 1590A pedal I would get it to save space on my pedal board.
t was like brian turning into angus ey
