- Hey Nep growers,
You've been asking for a video on cuttings so here it is! It's a very straightforward process with just a couple little things to keep in mind. If you're new to taking cuttings, be sure your plant has a basal. This ensures you still have a plant in the unfortunate event they don't root. Cuttings do best in temps above 65F with high relative humidity and indirect light. Never let your cuttings dry out. We see activation in a little as 4 weeks on some! Never be afraid to experiment. We all have unique conditions and finding what works best in them is up to the grower.

I've a couple of questions: is moss easier / quicker than water for propagation? How long does it generally take before they root?

@@tomasck2973 Ours take anywhere from 4-8 weeks. Again, it depends on the grower/conditions/species. I’ve seen others root them in water. I believe it was 2 months before they had roots . I tried before and some grew roots and other didn’t. For us, this way works best with a super high success rate. If you cut yours and are willing to experiment, definitely make some little mad science projects. Super fun!

I'm a newbie at growing Nepenthes. I ordered a plant from Amazon from a nursery out of Florida. Not only did i not get the species i ordered but the one they sent me was about as long as your main cutting. They put a small piece of rockwool on the end of the 2 1/2 ft cutting unrooted. I wish i saw your video earlier. I could of tried to root some clones. Thanks for sharing.

Never done a vine cutting before. Only basals, for now. I experimented with rooting hormone on my 3 N. ventricosa x hamata basals and they rooted in 33 days! That was a bit quicker than others without hormone. Thanks for the vid Dom!
Nice a gel or powder? Soooooometimes we cut base growths, but that’s where the largest pitchers can be made on that old root stock. I tend to leave those. Love lowers pitchers! 😌

@@redleafexotics4722 I dip the bottom of the cutting in a paste of water and GH then coat it with dry GH powder. I then rinsed it off after 2 weeks because I heard someone doing that. Dont remember the reason

Great Nepenthes Cuttings 101 video! Usually I do three nodes and half all the leaves. I get a high percentage of strikes perhaps due to the natural humidity levels here in Hawai'i nei. All plants are grown in an open shade house and dependent on our ambient weather conditions. Two nodes huh? Will try! Also, if there are other Nepenthes growers in Hawai'i, I would love to hear what works for them too! Aloha

Hi Dom. I have a Nepenthes Ventricosa, at least four years old. It thrives in Ohio’s heat and humidity but it’s now inside for the winter by a sunny south window. Three vines are brown and dead with a cluster of 8-9 healthy leaves at the top of each vine. I want to take cuttings. How many leaves should I cut off ? Also at the base of one dead vine there’s a small green shoot. Should I leave it? The mother plant is full and healthy with a new plant coming up beside it. I haven’t been able to find a video for the ventricosa cuttings from dead vines. Thanks for your help!

They prefer less light as they are rooting:)

Hello! A basal is a base shoot from the bottom of the stem. It usually produces lower pitchers.

What do the plants that come from cuttings that large look like once they're pitchering?
Hey!
Since the cuttings are usually from the vining stem, they mainly produce uppers. We have had cuttings go into lowers and grow like a Base shoot. Depends on the cutting. The initial pitchers are normally on the small side until the cutting is more established.

have you ever tried to keep the pitchers cut in resin to make works of art? I don't know if this is possible and if the rendering would be nice but it's worth trying to sell them afterwards
I have used Floral Drying Crystals to preserve and dry the pitchers. Once dry, they can be coated with epoxy or immersed/embedded in epoxy.

I am curious what happens to the cut on the main plant?
Will it grow out a new stem where the cut was made or will it just grow a crust or whatever on the cut and stop there....I would really appreciate an answer because I have seen some pretty big Nepenthes in a store close to me and I am thinking of buying one and then take a cutting from it to get another one like getting two for the price of one. 🤪
Also this is the second video where they tell to cut a third or so from the leafs but what is the purpose of that and what happens if you don't?
gave one of my neps a trim the other month and cut off an old leave not realizing it had a whopping pitcher on it... gutted

I don’t even use regular rooting hormone these days. They root without it:)

Hey Jason,
The most common ones to start with are ventrata and Miranda. I suggest Truncata and veitchii hybrids:) they are tough and beautiful!
I live in NC and there is a lot of humidity but it gets hot. Is the heat hard on the plant?
Oh and I have the same exact type that you are taking cuttings off of in the video…

Questions: Hold old is that pitcher plant? Does Nepenthes Gaya and Hookeriana grow those stems? And if yes, at what age? Can I "reproduce" a freshly bought nepenthes? (that has 3 "big" pitchers and 2 baby ones, like really small) I am a begginer and I want to try and make 2 plants out of 1😅
This plant is 6 years in our care from a cutting. Most Nepenthes including the ones you listed vine and grow stems. It’s hard to say atbwhT age but at least 2-3 years old. Again, it depends on how fast the plants are, parents and so on. It’s not about the number of pitchers for propagation it’s the size of the plant. Usually the plant has to be vining and like I said in the video, with a basal. If you are just beginning I wouldn’t disturb the plant.

@@redleafexotics4722 Thank you! Also, I recently repotted it. I couldn't remove all of the soil it came with when I received it. I took everything I could out and put it in sphagnum moss. Could not removing all of the soil affect the plant in any way?

Can you still grow or save a small Nepenthes seedling with a snapped growth point?
Many time they grow out. It really depends on the conditions and size of the plant. Thanks

As I watch more of these videos, I come only to the conclusion that I've never had any fucking clue how to pronounce these names. Like I've been pronouncing "spathulata" in my head as though the 'th' was a hard 't' for years.
