What strikes me most of this is the "pull and push" factors. What has frustrated so many in the U.S. is our inability to find people of like mind and intelligence to interact with. How many of us sit at home studying, reading, writing, reduced to ruminating with our own souls because there is simply no one we can share with. From science to literature, history, religion, the challenges and blessings of daily life, we're only able to connect online. Rare is the friendship that goes deeper now.

This is also happening in the UK where the same paranoia, accusations of spying and intellectual theft are meted against Chinese students. In the past, when China was poor and not as developed as today, many Chinese went to the West to study and seek better prospects. This is no longer the case as China's science & technology has surpassed the West in many fields. China's living standards are as high or becoming even higher than many Western countries.

  • @deanc685

Kevin, a better way of looking at this is by looking at the traditional breakdown between basic and applied research. Basically, organizations like the US govt leave basic research to the Universities, then take that and operationalize it so to speak. This is where the national labs or corporations come in. So the big problem is that not only is basic research being done at Chinese universities, but applied research is integrated as well. So not only does integrated supply chains refer to physical products, but also to knowledge as well.

And could be you feel superior just because you attribute ignorance to him.
Though a snowball is not a valid argument, the fuzzy cognitive fog around "climate change" is even less valid argument when it comes to the de facto meaning of "climate change". He brought a snowball against pseudo-sci papers presented as a supposed truth coming out of the mouth of the not-better-defined "scientific community". Though the snowball is not a valid argument, those papers are just hot air. But it seems that polarized people, could be like you, are not able to see that the snowball was brought because it was made of same, evanescent, nature as those papers.
For a better world we should all think more and parrots less.
If a Chinese congressman brought a snowball, his fellow Chinese would have started asking themselves what was the meaning of his act.
Paraphrasing Kennedy, I would suggest you "Do not ask how much the man of the state thinks for you, but ask yourself how much you think about what he is doing (by saying) for you."
ps. "Climate change" acquired a meaning that was indirectly predicted by G. Orwell. Instead of just a change for whatever reasons, nowadays it means avoidable human-provoked climate disaster. We are losing the semantic of our language. Get a clue, instead of cheap spitting at others.
