Hazel's childhood experience about getting into cryptids and aliens mirrors mine so fucking hard that it made me remember a book in elementary school about an alien that came back from the moon landing and the big twist was Neil Armstrong had his name on a clipboard as Neil A. and the protagonist realized it was alien backwards. Also I saw the flatwoods monster drawing in a big black book of cryptids and became so obsessed that I'd draw her in the margins of all my papers (along with mothman) to point of getting in trouble with my teachers. Good times!

I've always loved The Flatwoods Monster because I find it really unsettling, so I'm kinda embarrassed after learning everyone thinks it's cute lmao.

If it helps, I find it completely unsettling too. I get why someone would think it is cute, but I think because of it's large face and head, small arms and floating body it's just not something I ever want to deal with.

Agreed. WV most definitely has some wild cryptids. As well as some incredible history that unfortunately a lot of conservative members of the state are far too uneducated to appreciate.
Mothman is probably my favorite cryptid, and i am glad it got a mention in the video. Joe Nickell speculates that Mothman was a mother owl protecting her offspring, so it might have been female too

I'm sure this one doesn't count but just as a fun fact, there's a piece of Splatoon concept art where you can see a Flatwoods Monster acting as some sort of judge for an early version of a Splatfest Event. It's really cool!

I’m pretty sure that the character Maligula from psychonauts 2 counts as a flatwoods monster. She doesn’t have glowing eyes in the picture you most commonly see of her, in the mental worlds of lobotos labyrinth and psi kings sensorium she is portrayed with them.

i loooove cryptids and paranormal stuff, when i was a kid my edgy teenage sister got me into Weird New Jersey, a local magazine about cryptid and alien sightings, hauntings, and other alleged paranormal phenomena around the state, as well as just general weird shit you could find. though i was a big scary cat as a kid and i was always afraid an alien or the jersey devil would bust in through my window at night at Get me lmao

I’ve driven by Flatwoods quite a few times while road tripping through the Eastern US and I’ve always taken photos of the sign and it always makes me chuckle cos dang do I love that alien lady.
so happy to have found this video! the flatwoods monster was also a childhood fear turned into something i adore (i was so scared of the drawing at first that i didn't even register it was a drawing until i was a teenager. i couldn't look at it for longer than 1 second so i swore it was a blown out black and white pic). happy to see more people that appreciate this sweetie and happy to learn of more niche references to her i wasn't aware of :)

Yo like half my family lives in Flatwoods so like this oddly super specific monster from where my family is based being so ingrained in video games fills me with so much joy. In Flatwoods there are these GIANT wooden chairs that I remembered being like ENTRANCED by, and like you would see random like depictions of it scattered throughout people's gardens and what not. I cannot TELL you the AMOUNT of joy this video brought me. Like. I have NEVER felt more seen in the Video Game Community ™ like FOR REAL. My love for cryptids and UMA were solidified in my teenage years by the manga series Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunsou), so the bit about the reduced agressiveness of 2000's cryptid's really hit close to home for me tbh !

Headsup if you haven’t heard, Yugioh Go Rush has a Flatwoods Monster character named Mitsuko. She’s 3 meters tall and her traditional design is a mech suit.
And this week’s episode introduced another girl from her planet who pretends to be a basketball hoop.
I haven't watched Go Rush and don't really plan on it but I love Mitsuko on principle alone. Like, holy shit, giant Flatwoods Monster lady!! Such a fun concept 😁

I first learned about cryptids when I was about 8 year olds, zonked out in a reading nook in the school library all day because I was sick, and my friend brought me a book about paranormal stuff including cryptids. I sat in that dark corner and deliriously read it and it absolutely freaked me out. It was not a fun experience overall, I was never a horror kid and to be honest I'm still not a horror person, but in time I came to really love and appreciate cryptids.

Absolutely love the video, the flatwoods monster (as well as the Fresno nighcrawlers) has been on my mind for months. They're the perfect mix between eerie and endearing. They're def making an appearance in my cryptid inspired dnd campaign, seeing all of these different interpretations has given me lots of inspiration.

For a cartoony sci-fi 3D platformer action-adventure game I imagined an alien race based on them as intergalactic entrepreneurs and some members have different collars/helmets based on other card suits like diamond-shaped ones, heart-shaped ones, and club-shaped ones.
In the Pokemon bit I feel like hatterene resembles the flatwoods monster a little as well
Personally I would say Gothitelle looks more like a Flatwoods, Hatterene just looks like a mix of a traditional witch and greys

Not a video game, but a character based on the Flatwoods Monster appears in the newest Yugioh anime, Go Rush. Her name is Mitsuko Hiramori and she's an alien who normally just looks like a human, but wears a costume that resembles Flatwoods in order to scare people (she's kind of a villain).
The show also has a Chupacabra character, if you're interested in those.
Flatwoods Monster is my favorite too, and this was so fun to see so many games I recognize, but never knew there was a flatwoods monster in them. Thanks for this detailed coverage! This was wonderful to watch.
