  • The "Shawn Xuan Wang" comparison! British Columbia greatest realtor and Porsche enthusiast was the gentelman who turned me on to the Caol Ila 30 & likened it to the Talisker 25 cask strength... was he right? Well, if this is wrong, I didn't want to be right.

Great review yet again here guys. Versus and blinds are my favorites. I've done this same Caol 30 versus Talisker 25 C.S. in several types of forms. IMO the Caol 30 can get a point or 2 higher with 2-3 eye-dropper drops of water in 1/2-3/4 ounce. And then I let the Caol sit for 30 minutes minimum and then closer to 1 - 1.5 hours by the time I get to the last sip. Doing this, amongst a few other tricks (such as watering in a sample bottle and letting that integrate for a month or so), the last sip in the glass of the Caol can get to pure magic with smoked elegant apple ciders with roasted toffees and waxiness. I always pour the Caol 30 in 2 separate glasses (instead of more whisky in one glass)--which allows me to have "two last sips of magic" instead of just one. It's at least 2 points higher doing this than otherwise. I have the Caol reaching a strong 93/93.5 under these circumstances and matching (or at times even bettering) the best of the Talisker 25s (my favorite is the 2007 release, 92-93 and the 2006 just behind that 92 and the 2004/05 both at 91-92). But I agree with both of you that the Caol 30 is about a 91 and a notch or two lower when enjoyed just simple and straight with less effort and tricks. As such the Caol 30 IMO is a pure "whisky nerd" expression. It's only best by playing nerd games--in fact it demands creative nerd effort to reveal its finest qualities. I know that most drinkers are not into that kind of effort, but just so your viewers know that the Caol 30 can be top shelf magic when coaxed into the best reveal. Not an easy sipper for sure. In fact, I can get the Caol 30 to a better place of enjoyment and score than I can the Caol 35 by playing these nerd games with water and air. The only way I can get the Caol 35 to match the Caol 30 nerd magic is when I 'integration-mix' 50/50 the Caol 35 with the best batches of Lagavulin 16 from 2000-2006 bottlings.

Really tempted to pull the trigger on that Talisker 25 cask strength, still available at WhiskyExchange for 750£.

It's obvious that each of you like the opposite bottle a little better than the other. That's the beauty of scotch, there are no wrong nose or tasting notes. I'll take a bottle of each please. Great review.

@@topshelfdustin3060 It seemed you favored the Caol ila palate more, but enjoyed the Talisker nose. Mike was definitely favoring the Talisker, but also enjoyed the Caol ila. It's all good, you both enjoyed them. Their both epic whisky's. A little out of my price range though.

@@keithpetersen560 they are both out of my comfort zone to say the least as well. But yeah, when Mike finds certain fruit notes, it's game over for anything else. The other problem is that we spend more time talking post water and that 25 didn't love the water.
This was a case of two winners and that was mike and I for getting to enjoy these whiskies over the course of this half hour video and then finishing them up an hour later after we finished our review marathon.

I have a 2011 bottling of the Talisker 25 at 45.8% abv. I tried it next to the Caol Ila 30. The Caol Ila 30 won that pretty easy, although the Talisker 25 is still very good at 45.8%. I've been into scoth for around 8 - 9 years now and haven't seen one of the cask strength Talisker 25s at a shop. Sounds great. I also finally sampled the Daftmill Winter 2007. An incredible nose for its age, but the palate/finish (which are very very good for a 12 yo at 46%) couldn't get me to pull the trigger at $250. I'd be happy at $125 and would talk myself into $150.

Cask strength Talisker 25 is a completely different animal. Side by side you would recognize them as the same whisky at a less abv. Is magic and I hope you get a bottle.

Do Lagavulin 37 Cask Strength! I saw a bottle at my local liquor store for $3200. I want it so bad. Also, according to the TTB public COLA registry database search, Lagavulin will be releasing Lagavulin 26 Natural Cask Strength sometime this year.

@@topshelfwhisky I think I can afford somthing around 400 euro so my choice falls between Black Art 4.1 or 7.1 or the other options are Talisker 25 normal version and Glengoyne 25 , Balvenie Tun 1509 or Ardbeg Dark Cove. What is you’re take on wich one to choose? The Talisker 25CS or Balvenie Tun 1401 are far above my price range. But I’m looking for a bottle for a big event in my life and one to top my collection. The Laphroig 25 is a bit over my price limit and I personally like the Laphroig Lore more then the 18 so if Laphroig 25 is similar to the 18 I will still rather get a Lore. I like peat malts or cherry malts. Wine cask ones to. A long finish. Sometimes some whisky with fruits like pineapple citrus and banana. So a wide speaktrum. I like the mouth coating ones sometimes the fresh young ones but this time a very rich one we’re you need to take time with it. Complex and you need to taste the time.

@@jonahartistdavis1858 The 4.1 or the Glengoyne 25 would be my choice. The 4.1 is probably a “better whisky” but the GG25 will be liked by a greater number of people. IMO
The Laphroaig 25 is a nice step up from the 18. Both are good whiskies but the 25 I s bordering on epic.

@@topshelfwhisky Hi after long thinking. I thought there is so much going for it. That it was made by the legendary Jim MacEwan. That it is so rare now. And secret casks. That it’s complex with long finish . That it has the quality and the wow factor. And that bottle looks so cool. That the flavor is magic. That it also is a sherry malt/ wine/ bourbon. So I pulled the trigger on the BA 4.1. What would you rate it these days? I hope it’s still a 92! Or atleast at 91
