    Ahhhh, memories of the great Jim Clark tossing his Cortina around - usually on 3 wheels! I'm not sure anyone had the connection with a race car that Jim did. Fabulous driver and always a match for the best! Jim, and the Flying Mantuan, Tazio Nuvolari, were two of my favorite drivers of all time. They were two of the oh so rare, naturally gifted great drivers!

    I love the variety of car designs,
    Mini- front engine/front wheel drive,
    Imp- rear engine/ rear wheel drive,
    Cortina, A40, Mustang - front engine/rear wheel drive.
    Shame no one ever made a rear engine/front wheel drive car!!

    Helluva race on both parts. The Cortina was passing smaller cars under braking and in corners even when it also had them on the straights - hint - and the Mustang only kept ahead because of the skill of the driver flogging it and the nature of the track. Great fun to watch.

      I think you're in the neighborhood, but the Mustang has a LOT more power, but its weight and suspension are working against it with the nimble, better handling Cortina clearly being better in the control department. I find it amusing to watch vintage British racing as some of the cars that compete are so vastly different, I can't quite make sense of it. When you run a 7 liter, 4,000 lb.+ Galaxy against a 1.1 liter Mini Cooper, I just laugh and shake my head. In America, we seem to do a better job in having competing cars at least in the same realm as each other. I do have to say though, it's fun watching the mouse vs Goliath on the track!

    • @michaeldeakin4287
      @michaeldeakin4287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Loulovesspeed Compared to the Galaxy, the 64-6 Mustang is extremely light for an american car, (3000#) before lightening, plus the 289 is very oversquare, which makes it less torquey but fast revving. I'm a mopar guy but i've had quite a few of these early coupes and with a few go faster parts, they are fun to drive and reasonably economical.

      Good video. I think better brakes may have also favoured the Cortina.
      Although even F1 drivers use sims to familiarise with a circuit they haven't visited before, it's only to learn where the corners are and get a visual 'tape recording' in their head of the sequence of corners. As Clarkson found out in a road car, setting a lap time on a game or sim then trying to match it on the track on the 3rd of 4th lap results in a spin. The reverse is also true, you could be crap on a sim and fast on a track, simply because VR lacks all of the feedback that the car, tarmac, camber, gradient, g force etc. gives you.

      Ignorance. The Cortina’s 800lbs lighter than the Mustang. Per rules. The Cortina could have 7 cams and it would make no difference. The Mustang in the states are not crippled with BoP. This race is good entertainment but not indicative of the true potential of the Mustang. The Brits will NOT let a Yank Tank show its hand at Brands Hatch.

      @@rhett7716 Research. If you think the Mustang is “crap” you may want to read the rules. If, and this is a big if, you can comprehend you may understand why the Cortina is better under braking and still could not finish ahead of the Mustang. The Cortina is an outstanding car and very good at that track. To say the Mustang is crap is self evident your ignorance of racing. These two cars at Road America or Spa the Cortina would get lapped in a one hour race. At a tight smaller track with a lot of transition the Cortina has the advantage. If you had the smallest of understanding of racing you would understand this.
      Everyone knows the FIA will not let an American car win in Europe. Except when it benefits them. When the new Ford GT won Le Man the FIA gutted the Ferrari before the race. This is why there are no more American Backed cars racing in Europe. They will not get a fair shake. Sad really but that is the politics of racing.
