      That’s called blade pitch, they normally do this with the 400’s and 300’s. they go from feathered config (which is when the blades look really skinny) to flight config (which is when the blades look really thick) you would normally have them feathered during engine startups to idle and if you were to have the blades feathered during low speeds it could possibly lead to a mid air stall.

    Such engine seems no self starting mechanism? It requires pumping compressed air from ground station for starting the engine combustion.
    Once engine A started, exhausted air pump to engine B and starting the engine ignition again.
    I also flied on Dash8 recently from Bangkok to Phuket at Thailand trip recently, it is a good experience for flying a turboprop plane. The first time, I flied on turboprop was from NY to DC in 1990s, I already forget the model I flied at the time.

    • @ckyliu
      @ckyliu ปีที่แล้ว

      The starters on this engine are electric, not high pressure air. This start was done with electrical ground power (GPU).
      Q400 have an auxiliary power unit (APU) in the tail for electricity and air conditioning without main engines running although they have a reputation for unreliability so use is avoided where possible. A battery start is possible but as a last resort only as it's very draining on the batteries.

    I always wondered, why on dash-8s the speed brakes are on during taxi?

    • @carlveilleux5744
      @carlveilleux5744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are not. Just prior take-off, a cockpit switch controlling the spoilers is set to the "Flight" position, and with the power at idle the spoilers extend. As take-off power is applied, the spoilers retracts and stay retracted for flight (note they are also used in flight for roll control). If the take off is aborted for some reason the engines are brought back to idle and the spoilers automatically extend and help slowing down the aircraft. Same thing happens on landing, with power at idle and aircraft on ground, the spoilers automatically extend. Once the aircraft has slowed down, the cockpit switch is set to "Taxi", which retracts the spoilers on the ground for taxi in, until the next take-off. This is a simplified explanation, the system is a bit more complex than this, with safety features that prevents inadvertent spoiler deployment in flight, etc.

    Except for a Twin Otter (which is a lot slower) I've never been on any plane that accelerates and climbs as fast as the Dash 8's although I was on a DC9 once empty and the pilots were like "watch this" and hot rodded it on departure and dived in for a landing. That being the days before they had to close the doors to the cockpit

    I'll start off with I know extremely little about aviation. I do know, they feather the props on landing to slow down (I have a great video of it if interested). Why though, start the engines un-feathered?
    Edit: Video. th-cam.com/video/64vb1--WxSs/w-d-xo.html

    • @sebsaviationyyc
      @sebsaviationyyc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you may be mixing up feathered vs unfeathered. They start with the props feathered (parallel to the airflow) which reduces noise and fuel consumption, and then unfeather them. On landing they disc the props (make them perpendicular to the airflow), as you said, to slow down. Reverse thrust is rarely used (at least on the q400) just because discing is effective on most runways. On shutdown they feather the props again for the reasons mentioned earlier, and to let the engines cool off a bit and stabilize before shutting down.
      Hope this info is useful!
