  • Setting up a PCI-based PowerPC card on the Amiga can be fiddly and cause a lot of headscratching. In this video I go through the details of how to set up a card and get it stable, looking at both the hardware and software requirements.
    Further set up details are here: github.com/Sakura-IT/SonnetAm...
    And the EAB thread referred to is here: eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t...

    Excellent video. Of all the uw/sca/2 drives i have run on the csppc it seems Fujitsu have had some of the buggiest firmwares. some work perfectly,some are problematic.

    Nice to see other take the time to make videos for us Noobs (newbies). I have a Killer K1 pci card. From what you describe in your video about A1200’s not working with PCI PPC PCI cards. I was under the impression fitzsteve has managed to get this to work a A1200 with Mediator. I do have a couple of the Phase5/DCE blizzard cards overclocked by stanchu100. As well as a Cyberstorm mk3 ppc overclocked. What are your impressions and experiences between the blizzard/Cyberstorm cpu accelerators compared to the PCI ones?

      All I know is that Hedeon (who wrote the library) has said repeatedly the A1200 + PCI PPC card doesn't fully work despite his repeated efforts and it likely never will.
      I have BPPC and CSPPC too. They are incredible designs, cramming two processors into tiny boards and there's definitely a charm to plugging them straight into the motherboard and using them. Generally speaking though, PPCs via PCI are faster.

    Bought a ragnarok a few yrs ago but never got around to setting this up. I’ll give it a try but doesn’t look that easy🤔 it took my all my time to set up the cyberstorm ppc .

    Video is pretty nice, a lot of things covered in it. But at times when I hear your voice I imagine Korg from Thor Ragnarok ;)

      Hiya! Thanks for the message and, yes, all is fine with me - I have just been really busy with other things for a while. I'm hoping to be back with some more videos soon

    Hi. Can you do the mips and mflops test with ppc and 68060, please ?

    • @wrangleramiga896

      Hi - here are some results from SysSpeed:
      The AA3000+ has a 50Mhz 060 and a 450Mhz Apocalypse card in it. 060 MIPS: 66, MFLOPS: 27. PPC MIPS: 509, MFLOPS: 369
      I also tested my other Amiga with 80MHz 060 and 750FX PPC overclocked to 1GHz. 060 MIPS: 106, MFLOPS: 42. PPC MIPS: 1144, MFLOPS: 941
      HTH!

    I am a bit confused. At ~31 minutes you start talking about mediator, but your AA3000+ has a Firebird/Prometheus implementation. What am I missing?

    You're so patient!!!! How does something like SHOGO MAD (Game) perform on such a setup?

      @@wrangleramiga896 well, I finally got my hands on a PPC card....booy was that was few days if fun doing all the software setup but hopefully I will be able to test SHOGO soon! I only wish it was 256MB for Quake3 :D

    Will OS4 run with this setup?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it won't. The OS4 kernel would need adapting to work with these PPC boards and that seems unlikely as I understand it

    Great work! Amiga can offer great library of games, but other types software aren't effective other than old times sakes, so I am not sure the point of investing time and money that won't benefit old software

    lets just dream for a minut here. lets say smp comes to os 4.1 could you put a couple of thease in an amigaone

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends how far your dream extends! As things stand, OS4 isn't supported so that's a roadblock. Even if that's fixed, no doubt major changes to the library would be needed to get multi-processor support working.

    Thought the Firebird had 3.3V?

    • @wrangleramiga896
      @wrangleramiga896  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops! Yes, you're right about that! I think my point still stands though to make sure you don't overload the 3.3v regulator if there is one.

    • @torstenk.351
      @torstenk.351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The footprint hese put for the 3.3V regulator allows for a whole range of current output options. I chose one step bigger than hese had in his BOM, because many PCI cards want 3.3V as well...

    The heavy breathing and sharp intakes of breath are really intrusive, and detract from the overall quality of the video. They are as loud as your voice, so I assume you're talking quietly with the microphone very close to your mouth. Adjusting your microphone position or recording settings might be an idea. 😉

    PPC on Amiga was always a kludge. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to get into the expense of doing this today.
    The main things people want to use their Amiga for today is to play Amiga games, which do not need a PPC chip.
