I build my jungle bases almost just the same way. when I started terrain making I spent about 10 Euros and had enough plastic plants to make a whole gaming board with it. In Germany there are several thrift stores that sell grass tiles with no less than 100 single plants on them that make great bushes. another good thing is that they come in different shapes and colours, too. You can also stick several of them on a skewer to make bigger plants. As bases I uses old DVDs or thick card board (from old puzzle boxes).
Wouldn't say the lighting was bad, but some of the stuff done towards the end (in the kitchen) was much brighter. Also, thanks for the wash idea for the plastic plants.
Better late than never. Another good tutorial Mel. After the wash I like to come back and drybrush the tips in a lighter green to elude to new growth. Another old favourite of mine is to use gardeners green tie wire for plants. It is a wire coated in plastic with 2 wings on either side. By hacking at the wings with a sharp scalpel you end up with a fern looking frond. Twist several together to make a fern. They look delicate but are as tough as nails.
Lighting: The farm and feed store near me has porcelain ceramic sockets in lamps with clamps on them meant for heat lamps in a hog farm. These sockets can withstand the heat from a 500 watt photo lamp and light things up brightly at a cheap price.
Great terrain tutorial on jungle terrain. I am a firm believer that the aquarium plants are the best and cheapest way to go. Not to mention the diversity of plants you get and if you mix and match you can create alien plant life as well . Best of Luck and thank you for sharing.
AlfonsoTheTraitor No worries buddy and totally with you with the mix and match :-)

Hi Mel, a spanish London based fan here! I'm not an expert with cameras and lights but, I use to work "white light" bulb or "sun-light" bulb. I found those in UK in the crafts stores. Those are pretty nice bulbs because they send out a non-coloured light so the you can see the actual colours on your paints or whatever you are working in. Maybe this can help you with you light-camera issue. Cheers mate!
Great tips on the foliage and keeping the cost low. I like the idea of using the washes to dull the shine. The camera shots look good. Thanks for sharing.
Once again a great video Mel. I've made a large amount of jungle terrain and you can always learn new tricks and you have shown me a couple of new ones. Keep up the great work.
Brilliant advice advice mate! I'll be off to the pound stores to look for plastic plants tonight. I'm into 1/35 scale dioramas, I think your options would work for me. I can't bear the thought of being ripped off buying 'special' hobby accessories. I've tried making plants out of paper but it just does not look right...your selection of home plants is an inspiration!
Goddamn it Mantic Mel! I literally have a base of aquarium plants waiting for the primer to dry on them to do a video on using them as budget terrain and you uploaded this video like an hour before I would of started to record mine. You utter git!
I like it Mel. I might have to go on the hunt for some plastic plants now. I wish I could offer some tips on the lighting but other than saying "it needs work", I have nothing! But... the lighting wasn't as terrible as you thought. The footage from the desk was easy to watch. You made another great tutorial man. Thanks for sharing!
I really like the new setup and camera. It's much clearer and it isn't such an akward angle for doing a tutorial. Anyway, thanks for again an amazing turorial! :p
Very nice work. One note though, the "model plants" that were shown first, are indeed also aquarium plants. (Specifically, they are made to provide a quick protective bed in hatcheries, so the fry have a place to hide.) Not to take funds away from our precious FLGS, but they are significantly cheaper from pet shops.
First let me state that I didn't catch the price you mentioned for the sheet of modelling plants in your video the first time I watched. That really is a great price! But... for varieties sake... :-) Google is your friend. I found these on Amazon UK (I'm in the USA, so this is a quick example for you): www.amazon.co.uk/SODIAL-Green-Square-Artificial-Grass/dp/B00JVIP1UG/ref=sr_1_67?ie=UTF8&qid=1423117192&sr=8-67&keywords=plastic+aquarium+plants I've bought most of mine from local pet stores, and chains like PetSmart, even my local Wal-Mart has a small variety. Just search for "plastic aquarium plants" on any eBay/Amazon/AliExpress site. Less than US$2.00 for a 23cm x 23cm sheet is pretty dang good. www.ebay.com/itm/Flower-Grass-Plastic-Artificial-Fish-Tank-Ornament-Plant-Aquarium-Decoration-New-/400771407594?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d4fd65eea
duckster313 And things like this just absolutely cannot be beat when you want to do an alien jungle quickly. 10 for US$3.79, and about 85mm high. Plus you can find them in colors other than green, to brighten things up a bit. www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-Aquarium-Decorative-Green-Plastic-Plant-Grass-Fish-Tank-Landscape-Decoration-/271677891265?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3f4143a2c1
The best thing I can suggest for the lighting, is to go to a fine art shop and get some daylight bulbs, they are about £9 each, but they simulate natural lighting perfectly.
So glad I've finally been able to catch up to your current video. I've been binge watching your videos since I found your Channel. Great Job! Here's a tip for the camera, for your intro shot, you have the Window in the camera frame. If you pan your camera left a bit to eliminate the bright window the camera will brighten up the rest of the room.
Nice tip. I didn't think of that. If the camera is adjusting the exposure on the fly (most likely), cutting out that window will encourage the camera to increase its light sensitivity.
Very nice job, good information and suggestions that I can use for creating my jungle for games of Congo. The lighting was good enough, best in the kitchen. I do think the flocking is a bit too "golf course-ish." Smooth, and short. I have used various shades and heights of static grass. Thanks.
Very nice! I just started playing Warhammer 40k and I made ruined temple jungle style scatter terrain for it. I am just missing the jungle part now. Guess I am hitting up the dollar store tomorrow. Thanks Mel.
I'm definitely going to try making a terrain (or in my case 'diorama' is probably more appropriate since I don't game) with some plastic plants in it and maybe a pond. Thanks for the tut. It's probably the first or second one of yours I actually watched. No harm watching it twice! Cheers!
Again, great stuff. I like the idea of shading the plastic plants. I've done up a bit of terrain pieces with fish tank plastic plants. I will try toning the bright green with a bit of wash. Thanks for the tip.
Another great video! Also using PVA glue instead of the hot glue gun on putting in the small clumps of foliage is the hot tip of the gun could melt your plastic plants.
I have had great success copying these for my own collection, thank you very much for the video! Just watching it again, I notice that the PVA used for the flocking is straight from the bottle. But in every other video I've seen on the channel, the flocking is always done with a watered down mix of PVA (of at least 50/50). I wonder, was there a particular reason the PVA was used neat in this video?
Thks matey ill check that out just watchin some of the bk to basic stuff because im toying with the idea of either getting age of sigmar or bolt action so im headin more towards bolt action because I love anything to do with ww2 plus theres loads of stuff u can make for it so again thanks mate ill check it out
Neat stuff Mel. Love the plants and the small setting you made for the gaming table. Bought some plastic plants myself, recently, but haven't made them up just yet--thought I'd check around the several of you terrain guys to see how the pros do it before I gave it a shot. What's a kwid and what's a tanner when you talk about your plastic plants? You said you got some for "a couple of kwid" and you got "all this stuff for a tanner." Got no idea what you're talking about. I'm guessing some sort of slang for money, but that's as far as I can take it. I'm American and we deal with dollars and cents, mostly, but we have our slang for various denominations and street talk. Bucks, bills, Gee's, 5 spots, 10 spots, Franklins, Jeffersons, etc
13thBear 1 quid = £1 British Pound, Tenner = £10. Tonne = £100, Grand = £1000. I was with you until Bill's, go on, your turn to break down the cultural barrier, can you explain how much those terms relate to please mate. genuinely interested :-)
Those modelling plants are available in big sheets for much cheaper. Have you got much more planned for this series? Trying to make a burma jungle myself and would love your help
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Grass-Plastic-Artificial-Fish-Tank-Ornament-Plant-Aquarium-Lawn-Decoration-Newly-/331242833417?hash=item4d1f9c8609 There you go buddy- takes ages from China, but well worth it. Looking forward to more
Loved the new camera angles. Great work. Another good source of plastic plant material, especially at this time of year, is plastic Xmas trees. Many are made up of lots of separate pieces like the decorative plants in the video, and stripping down a 4' tree can give you a forest of small tree-like plants. And some of the small 1' trees are made up of small crown shaped bushes. Shops might still have one or two left on clearance by now, but looking around in the first couple of weeks in January you can usually pick them up for a pittance. Regarding the plants in your video that you say were designed for modelling purposes - I'm not convinced. They may have been sold as such at a healthy "hobbyist" markup, but I have some almost identical aquarium plants bought direct from China via eBay for literal pocket change.
DrVesuvius70 Cheers and nice tip on the xmas trees, going to check mine now lol. It wouldn't surprise me, I've never been able to source the same pieces through aquarium suppliers so if you've got a link, I'd be very grateful matey :-)
that is some really good jungle terrain there mate, that really dose look very very nice, i have never been one for using plasti plants in terrain, but i would put that on a battlefield any day of the week. congrats mate you get another gold star. :)
My experience of lighting for camera work is that there almost isn't such a thing as 'too much'... The camera likes it to be a lot brighter than humans are usually comfortable with!
.. like your mix of different kinds of plants and materials, usually I only used plasik plans and static grass, but at the time I am building up a nice supply in "homemade" clump foliage to test it on some terrain soon... as you are a "PVA-person" I am as well... but this video of yours has brought me to my decicion finally to buy a hotglue-pistol..... :D
TheTerrainTutor :-D ... might be.... but when building jungle-terrain and have to use lots and lots of plants and allways have to drill small holes into the base to glue them into the base with PVA...... I´d rather try the "hotglue"-solution next time..... ;-) have a look on this.... :-D facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.668602559865172.1073741828.170500416342058&type=3
Great video! Just wanted to know what you meant at 8:17--did you wash them with three different washes in that order to achieve the result at the far right, or was each of those plants was only washed with one colour?
Nice video love to know where you pick up your plastic house plants for £1 as I can never find them that cheap great vids keep up the good work cheers Lee
I need some alien looking vegetation, got to look out for those reduced plants. Can these be repainted, as I was thinking about purple, red and blue colored plants? Or is my best option aquarium plants?
New to your videos. you do great work and your tutorial was most helpful! I know this is an old video and by now I assume that you have updated your lighting and angels etc. however I would say just one item and that is to film with the video on the left side. Due to the fact your left handed (looked that way to me) and putting it on the left side will give a clear view of what you are doing. Well, that's my 2 copper. Thanks for the video!
Mel, the new cam is very good, especially the auto-focus. :) For further projects or even short intros, try to prevent to have direct light sources like windows in the view. That always kills the whole image. ;) And great job on the plastic plants! :)
great tutorial and the camera seems to be working a treat looked good, but you are correct the lighting needs to be up a notch not a lot but just a touch, great stuff though Mel
By the way I've got a question: What are you making the ground of your terrains from? It doesn't look like MDF polystyrene foam (like the pink or blue sheet stuff they put on houses like you get at a warehouse store such as Home Depot). I've used some of that stuff but it melts when hot glue is applied which is not unexpected.
Chris Melvin Which ground mate? These were flat bases with some filler (spackle), typically I used pink polystyrene, you can hot glue it as long as your glue is cool enough :-)
TheTerrainTutor I think it was the one you made the jungle terrain on. The spackle explains why it didn't look like foam. Thanks again Mel. I love your videos. I have subscribed. I thought I had done it already but realized I hadn't. (Oversight.) Great work you do. Keep at it!
Excellent work, but I'd recommend adding some color. One of the great things about actual jungles is that there are always some vividly colored flowers peeking through. Only as an accent, though, in the general wall of green.
The new setup is really nice and the camera works really good, but for the lightning, try to have a light source from the front, maybe a little bit to the side and above. Your setup in the beginning has the light from the back, so the shadow of the pieces are falling on the side of the camera. If you change it to more side/front, you get only shadows from the front side, which shows more of the texture of the items you want to show. Totally from the front or top wouldnt be great either, because then all items would look flat(like in your kitchen). Maybe look up something like rembrand ligthning, which is a good start to experiment for your setup. And i'm really looking forward for the tutorial on the hills. I'm planning some rocky slopes myself and I will be using cork-like materials, so hopefully I can learn some thinks :) Cheers
Great tutorial, very helpful for some stuff I'm doing now, but your story about getting a load of citadel paints for 1 quid each had me cursing you! :-)
Hi mate love the vids. Wee question. Im struggling to find cheap plastic plants in Scotland ive tried pound shop, BM bargins, discount store etc. You got any ideas where else to buy. Im making an overgrown ruins style jungle/forest for malifaux. Regards Robbie.
Great video as always, camera angle and lighting seemed good so just give yourself more time to adapt to using the new angle. Only advice I could give is keep making videos! Your quality is always improving so keep up the great work!
Learning a LOT from your tutorials!! Question: does hot glue agree with polyurethane? I made a wall out of PU, and now want to stick some plants and such to it... Thanks, and keep up the good stuf!!!!
Those look cool for impassible terrain, but they look difficult to move the models through. Would you have been better to have a base and have a number of plants on 20mm bases so you can move trees out of the way.
Dan Bellinger It has to be kept somewhere pretty damn hot to dry out to brittle mate, I've never had a problem with it and i've got pieces that are 8 yrs old and it's still fine
Can't beleve you counted Al them branches jokes I este mated 100 neva thought of using clump folage. oh yeh and maybe try sort sum close ups man photos make it look so much sicker
There was nowt wrong with the lighting dude. You sit where you're most comfortable. Otherwise your videos aren't going to be as good as you'll want to rush them.
Aleph Myrmidon Nice tips, I'll keep my eyes open for the grass tiles mate, thanks for the heads up.
Really nice tutorial! I'm a lizardmen collector and for my terrain I love this jungle brush things!
Keep up the good work mate
+Bert Bertson Glad it helped mate
Wouldn't say the lighting was bad, but some of the stuff done towards the end (in the kitchen) was much brighter.
Also, thanks for the wash idea for the plastic plants.
Christian Oliver Thanks buddy :-)
Better late than never. Another good tutorial Mel.

James Evans Oh, I've got some similar wire, I'll give that a go mate :-)
Mr.Mel, the new cam. is perfect, great work on the plastic plants, and the bad light was not a problem, it was still clear, two thumbs up
blatalus Cheers on both counts buddy :-)
Those things looks great. They'd make a good Catachan jungle.
WarGamerGirl They certainly would, thanks :-)
Lighting: The farm and feed store near me has porcelain ceramic sockets in lamps with clamps on them meant for heat lamps in a hog farm. These sockets can withstand the heat from a 500 watt photo lamp and light things up brightly at a cheap price.
Great tutorial. My son and I have just started making a jungle board so this was a big help.
Manic Elf Talk about timing :-)
Been looking into Bolt Action tabletop game & loving this video. Going to be quite helpful for lots of plant life on the table.
Great terrain tutorial on jungle terrain. I am a firm believer that the aquarium plants are the best and cheapest way to go. Not to mention the diversity of plants you get and if you mix and match you can create alien plant life as well . Best of Luck and thank you for sharing.

Great tips on the foliage and keeping the cost low. I like the idea of using the washes to dull the shine. The camera shots look good. Thanks for sharing.
Stronghold Crafter Kev Cheers on all counts buddy :-)
Once again a great video Mel. I've made a large amount of jungle terrain and you can always learn new tricks and you have shown me a couple of new ones. Keep up the great work.
***** Cheers buddy, curious to know what your tips are now lol ;-)

Tony Smith Cheers buddy, slowly getting there with the setup, hopefully the latest tutorial is much better than this one :-)
I'm no expert on camera stuff, but this looked pretty good to me. Even the "Bad" lighting was still fairly clear to me!
Cant go wrong with plastic aquarium and floral plants.
Matthew McDonough Cheers mate
I really like the new setup and camera. It's much clearer and it isn't such an akward angle for doing a tutorial. Anyway, thanks for again an amazing turorial! :p

Oh... The green flocked bases look great as well. Hard to pick a favorite between these and the ones from your BBB. Separate but equal I suppose. 😉
Always learn something watching your videos. Keep doing what you're doing.
Very nice work. One note though, the "model plants" that were shown first, are indeed also aquarium plants. Another great video! Also using PVA glue instead of the hot glue gun on putting in the small clumps of foliage is the hot tip of the gun could melt your plastic plants.

Great video! Just wanted to know what you meant at 8:17--did you wash them with three different washes in that order to achieve the result at the far right, or was each of those plants was only washed with one colour?
+Alex Mackenzie different wash colour on each mate :-)
Ah, I see now. Thanks!
Nice video love to know where you pick up your plastic house plants for £1 as I can never find them that cheap great vids keep up the good work cheers Lee
Poundshop buddy ;-)
I need some alien looking vegetation, got to look out for those reduced plants. Can these be repainted, as I was thinking about purple, red and blue colored plants? Or is my best option aquarium plants?
Yes with spray primer but checkout pot pourri mate
Thanks will check that out.
I'm always working angles, thanks for the feedback mate
Mel, the new cam is very good, especially the auto-focus. :) For further projects or even short intros, try to prevent to have direct light sources like windows in the view. That always kills the whole image. ;) And great job on the plastic plants! :)
***** Thanks buddy and thanks for the feedback, I think I'll close the curtains lol
Hehe, that might help. ;) "Look, what is the guy over the road doing every second day? Isn't he married?" :D
*****
I think it's the setting up of the lights and camera first that'll cause more interest mate lol
Hehehe. ;)
great tutorial and the camera seems to be working a treat looked good, but you are correct the lighting needs to be up a notch not a lot but just a touch, great stuff though Mel
kevin weadick Thanks matey, no doubt I'll get the lighting sorted eventually :-)
Crystal Shepard Nice tip matey, thanks
I prefer your previous camera angle, but if this is easier for you that's cool. Thanks for the video
+Sean Edgar Thanks, fingers crossed I'll get the right angles down
Great work thanks again.
I'm planning some rocky slopes myself and I will be using cork-like materials, so hopefully I can learn some thinks :)
Cheers
tae1000esd thanks for the lighting tips mate, cork hills should be coming up shortly :-)
As always Mel awesome job
Walk About Gamez thanks buddy
mel, what is the difference between oil based washes and water based washes? thanks if you reply
fine turning, acrylic washes go down and set, oils take much longer and are reworkable with solvents, so allow fine tuning mate
Great stuff as always.
looks great, very nice tutorial and tips and tricks, thx :)
unkhter no worries buddy, are you going to use it? ;-)
Robbie G Pets at Home superstores? Pet Shops? Ebay? Good luck with the build :-)
Great video as always, camera angle and lighting seemed good so just give yourself more time to adapt to using the new angle. Only advice I could give is keep making videos! Your quality is always improving so keep up the great work!
Draltair0 Thanks for the freedback buddy, I'll keep soldiering on ;-)
Learning a LOT from your tutorials!! Question: does hot glue agree with polyurethane? I made a wall out of PU, and now want to stick some plants and such to it... Thanks, and keep up the good stuf!!!!
Should be fine mate
Thanks, TT! Always a pleasure watching your vid's!
Great tutorial, very helpful
Those look cool for impassible terrain, but they look difficult to move the models through. Would you have been better to have a base and have a number of plants on 20mm bases so you can move trees out of the way.
john tailby it's a tutorial on using the plants rather than types of area terrain techniques but yeah totally with you mate
I recently began using lichen myself. Does it dry out and become super brittle? Is there something that can be done to prevent it?
Dan Bellinger It has to be kept somewhere pretty damn hot to dry out to brittle mate, I've never had a problem with it and i've got pieces that are 8 yrs old and it's still fine
great tutorial
kairus1 thanks mate
What do you make your bases out of for your terrain?
Patrick L 6mm MDF mate
Thank you sir!
Would your homemade washes work?
grizzgull bolorag no reason while not mate, plus the plants are plastic so test, wash and retest lol
Hey there ! I'm just getting started, and I have a doubt. What's the brand of the flocking you use?
Thanks for Sharing!
Halloweenville No worries mate
What was the name of the shop that you got the washes from?
The Beachman Games Workshop mate

There was nowt wrong with the lighting dude. You sit where you're most comfortable. Otherwise your videos aren't going to be as good as you'll want to rush them.
Ross Diggle Cheers buddy :-)
Fantastic video! Thank you very much!
