For a garage floor Epoxy would be better but there are some good high wear water based paints on the market. The main difference with Epoxy paint is that it is chemical resistant, it will handle chemical spills and that's why a lot of commercial businesses prefer it used on floors rather then water based paint.
I know this video was made years ago but this is the best explanation I’ve found for this topic. He gets right to the point, gives succinct explanations and clear demos. No irrelevant fluff. Thank you!
I do prefer oil based or a two part epoxy for garage floors but I know of a busy shop floor that was painted using water based paint and it looks like its handling the wear & tear well. As long as the surface is prepared correctly water based paving paints seem to last but they won't stand up to chemical spills like epoxy or oil based paints will.
Well most top coats will flatten off slightly when applied over a primer so you need two coats to get an even finish. Primer maybe cheaper but if you count the time it takes to open the can of primer, pour out the paint, wipe the paint away then wash out roller and brush then I would say it would be cheaper to use two coats of top coat.
Wet area floors are fine to paint just make sure you use a non slip additive or buy a non slip paint. Most flooring paints I have used including two part polyurethanes don't need a primer but do check with manufactures standards as all brands do vary. Most brands I use just say to thin first coat so it soaks in better.
This guy is good. Really GOOD! Thank you for a really helpful and informative video. I will be able to attack my concrete painting jobs with confidence when summer roles around (no pun intended). It's a little cold in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand at the moment. I don't mind the birds in the background. They add an authentic touch to video. Acid etching does help to clean the surface but the idea is for the acid to eat in to the concrete slightly and remove any loose material giving the paint a better surface to stick too. So for a painted surfaces you don't need to acid etch but make sure you clean and sand the surface before re painting.
Use an oil based paving/flooring paint, most are quick dry and you can walk on them 2 -4 hrs later. Just make sure you use a non slip additive if needed.
Great video Thanks! I am doing this exact job in the next week or two and I just had a question regarding the acid wash step, the surface I am doing already has a worn down layer of paint on it so would I skip this step and sand lightly instead? The current colour is the pretty much the same as the new colour will be, just giving the front of house a facelift.
The acid helps clean the surface so its up to you, if you think it doesn't need it then skip that step but make sure the surface is clean. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe
I have no idea on painting concrete. Seemed like the most difficult thing to do. This video really helped and the presenter looking like Jason Statham really helped to keep me focused on the video.
I can't remember ever painting a stone floor but the same technique should work. I would try a small test patch with the acid just to make sure it doesn't take too much off.
Most flooring or paving paints I have used are self priming so there is no need for a primer or sealer. As for patterns, you could make or buy a stencil. When it comes to filling holes you can use an exterior filler for small holes or use a two part filler for larger ones.
I could see both of them doing a great job and I know grinding would be an excellent way to get the surface clean but I would say both would be a tad more expensive then using acid. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe
If you will be driving over the floor all the time then you might be best using an two part epoxy paint. If it's use more so as a workshop then water based should be ok.
I always use latex interior paint...same as you would use one your wall...it last for years and years. I paint it a color, then sponge a different color with a sea sponge to give it a cool look and to hide all the imperfections in the concrete.
How long will the paint last? How many years? Will the paint discolor over time? All I want is a smooth white floor which is easy to clean and most important dust free. Should I go with white tiles or white paint? I cannot paint again and again every 3-5 years. I'm a busy man.
All paints vary but generally 7-10 years and longer on the outside and inside can last a long time but will most likely fade before it peels off. All paint will discolour over time and it would be your choice if you paint or tile. Tiles will last a long time and depends on the amount of traffic the paint gets it could last only a few years. That was a very imformative video! I am in the process of painting my garage floor. I have cleaned with TSP, acid etched, pressured washed and skim and repaired where necessary. The garage is 45 years old but the concrete is now in good paintable condition. I use the garage for storing an older car for periods of time, not constant traffic. Would you recommend latex or oil based paints? Thanks, Tom
For a garage floor I would most likely use a two part epoxy paint. There are some good water based paints on the market but I'm not sure if they would handle chemical spills like an epoxy paint would. If your car is leaking oil then you will need a paint that can handle that or if you intend to bleed brakes etc you will need a paint that is resistant to chemicals.
howtopaintinfo I thought you would say epoxy, but I was hoping you would say a water based would do it. My concern was it's 45 years old and it does have spots and stains. Like I said in my original posting, even though I cleaned, etched and patched, I thought there may be a problem with epoxy bonding. By just skimming, patching and caulking the cracks makes it look a lot better; I actually thought about leaving it that way and maybe sealing it. Like you, I am also a tradesman (retired electrician), and know there is a right and a wrong way to do things. thanks again Tom
Using a sealer would work but you will still the stains. Regarding using a water based paint, my local hardware has used a water based paint on their floor and it seems to be handling all the foot traffic.
Any thoughts or videos on how to add some decorative patterns on the painted surface? Nothing too complex. And what about sealers? I have a rough concrete floor that has never been painted but which has some holes. What is the best patch to fill these before painting?
I wanna thank you so much for sharing your clips on painting. thank you so much. Can't the holes be filled with some cement? I think it gives a higher quality of finished job.
Excellent video by someone who knows his stuff! I am laying a slab for a new garage floor in a warm part of Australia. How long should I leave the new concrete to harden before painting... a month, 6 months, a year? I am not sure. And should I go for oil based or epoxy for greater "industrial" strength? The floor will need to survive cars, rolling chair wheels, spanners etc. Thanks for the video, too.
RevolutionaryRocket I would leave it for about 4 weeks just to make sure it is dry and if you are using the garage as a workshop then a two part epoxy would be best.
Great video. I have a laundry that is proving a real pain for tiling. Do you think painting the concrete floor is a good idea? People say its not good to do this in the wash area? And I was also told I should use prima after I clean the concrete? (Before painting it) If I do go this way. Cheers :)

This is a great video. I'm going to use this to paint my walkway, and driveway with lowes driveway paint. The driveway has been painted before. Any tips for the rocky surface? Was that a bird in the background of your video?
Lol, the house in this video is a farm house and what you can hear in the background are Cockatoos, I was going to add a shot with them in it along with the kangaroos and koalas that were around. It was a nice place to work.
Thanks for the tutorial, it helped a lot. I stenciled Latex Porch and Floor paint onto my front concrete porch and walkway. I would like to seal it to protect the color, do you recommend any types of sealers? I was told to use Valspar Wetlook Protective Sealer by the Home Improvement store but was then told by Valspar that I should not have put that ontop of latex paint....not sure why because it worked fine and looks great. Now I want to seal the painted walkway but not sure what sealer to use.....any suggestions? Thank You.
Question. What about the expansion joints? I am thinking of redoing my expansion joints. Should I caulk them before painting or after. Also, I have a few hairline cracks. I can fill them prior but will the paint cover them. Your work is incredible. Can you please tell me what color you are using as well. It looks nature and clean. Thank you for your help.
Expansion joints can be done either way, if you want to hide them you will need to fill them before you paint. With hair line cracks some times I will apply a first coat and see how many fill with paint then fill and touch up any remaining cracks. I think the colour was Paper Bark, a colour bond colour. Hi Great video. Now which point do you recommend for single car garage and do I need to buy two-pack epoxy? Also does it need polyurethane clear coating since there is going to be some so un hitting the first meter from the garage door? Thanks in advance if you can send a this advice as soon as you can!
Sorry advice wasn't sooner, Two pack epoxy would be the best way to go but if the floor doesn't get much use then a good paving paint would be ok. Don't paint a clear over it, the sunlight will make the clear yellow over time. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Thank you great video. How long would you expect the paint to look fresh for, so before before it starts to chip etc. does it depend on how well you prep and quality of paint?
It will depend on wear and tear, the more the area is used the quicker it will break down and start looking crappy. So a floor that's not used a lot could look good for say 5 years, heavy use may only last less then 12 months. Good prep will help you get the most out of the paint and normally better quality paints will last longer. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Read the instructions on the can, every product varies a little so its best to read what the manufacture recommends but there are a lot that just recommend two coat of finish product and again will depend on the surface you are painting. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Planning on doing my laundry room this weekend. Have a bit of an issue. Have a cat who is notorious for missing hte litter box (will go next to it, even when spotless and clean with new litter. As a result I have both staining and odor.) What products would you recommend me going for that 1, will cover any existing odors, and 2, will be able to take a bi-daily mopping/scrubbing (i.e. something that can take abuse and won't need to be repainted and won't stain easily).
I would first clean floor with bleach to make sure that area has been neutralised then use an oil based paint as it is harder wearing. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
mopping with hot water every day should be ok but if its a commercial area then a two part epoxy would be the best paint to use.. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe
I think an angle grinder seems a bit harsh, you might be better of using a sander. A grinder might remove more then just the paint. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Shanae4rmMS Most modern paints are self priming so a sealer is not required but do read the instruction on the paint can or if in doubt you can use a sealer, just means you will still need to apply two top coats. If you do seal the floor first then apply two top coats it should last longer.
Depends on how much foot traffic it gets, it might only last 1 year with high traffic and 10 years with little traffic. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
Yes you should be able to pressure clean in the future, just be carefull not to hold too close as it might damage or remove the paint. A broom and bucket of soapy water could work just as easy it will depend on how dirty it is. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
i used the Rust O lum garage paint kit but in the second gallon i forgot to add the epoxy can i go back over it since ithas dried and roll it on with extra paints chips .?
I thought pterodactyls were extinct! Haha! Just kidding bud. I'm glad you made this video - I've been struggling for an idea on how to finish my floor in my studio. You pretty much gave me what I'm looking for, thanks! I was looking in to a resin method, but it just seems a bit much, and wayyy too time consuming. I've spent enough time working on my studio, I'd like to have the rest of it done this year. When I've got it all done, I might put it up on youtube. I've done some rather interesting concepts in it so far, and I have the perfect flooring idea to go with the walls ;) Cheers!
hello .could you please help me .in my apartment i have a concrete slab staircase with old carpet .i've been planning on renovating it by ripping the carpet off ,clean it ...etc .then paint each slab white except for the top of each slab .then ill put a wood panel on the top ? will that work ? or do you have any other cheap diy suggestion on interior slab staircase ? pls help me ,if you can 😊
Thanks very much for the video! I just painted a crawlspace recently, which went pretty well but naturally, appearances did not matter as much in that kind of area. I'll be painting the floor of the basement itself soon, so all of this info will come in handy. Thanks again! P.S. Any opinions on the different types of concrete paint available? I'm using a one-part latex, water-based epoxy...it's done well so far, but I have doubts about how much of an "expoxy" effect I'm actually getting.
I have the same hose nozzle. I absolutely hate it 😂 No pressure at all. You should teach how to cut in precisely. It is an Art! Once I learned it saved me so much time. You are very skilled! No body ever sands! It makes it so smooth.💕 You give such great tips. I love the color. Would you recommend painting in a textured pinhole EVERYWHERE concrete? My front step porch is so old and ugly gray. Like 1977 Concrete😔 I need help! 😬 Side Note: Those birds sound so evil!! 😳 😂
Pin holes in concrete are okay and if it had pinholes everywhere i would just try to fill with paint as best as I could. Its very hard to fill and sand concrete unless it is smooth finish and even then you don't want to risk sanding too hard or you can and will take off the top layer that is smooth. I'm considering to paint a concrete floor in my store. Could the floor become stained at all after painting? Also, there is a professional floor washing machine that will be used, could this ruin the paint or remove it? Do you believe that paint would be a good solution or something else to cover the concrete? Great video, thanks!
For commercial use you could use a two part epoxy paint, they are hard wearing and resistant to a lot of chemicals. My local hardware has used an acrylic or water based paint on their floor and it seems to be handling the wear and tear.
Can I paint such stuff onto a very rough external concrete slab with many cracks and no damp proofing under the slab, which gets very dusty naturally, and is open to weather.
That planning advice is incredibly important. I literally painted myself into a corner once inside a house. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!
If you don't think about what you are doing it can be easy to do.

What about primers
Thanks for great video. So I can use this for my job shop ???

Is it compulsory to do epoxy primer before the epoxy finish? Or just 2 coats of epoxy finish is good enough?
Read the instructions on the can, every product varies a little so its best to read what the manufacture recommends but there are a lot that just recommend two coat of finish product and again will depend on the surface you are painting.

Do you have to put some kind of clear seal on top?
No, but there are clears that you can use for concrete.

I think it was colour bond Paperbark.

Great video. My floor has a bit of salt damage. (Darn Canadian winters). Should that part of the foot be prepped differently?

Planning on doing my laundry room this weekend. Have a bit of an issue. Have a cat who is notorious for missing hte litter box (will go next to it, even when spotless and clean with new litter. As a result I have both staining and odor.) What products would you recommend me going for that 1, will cover any existing odors, and 2, will be able to take a bi-daily mopping/scrubbing (i.e. something that can take abuse and won't need to be repainted and won't stain easily).
I would first clean floor with bleach to make sure that area has been neutralised then use an oil based paint as it is harder wearing.

Do you use like a sealer or anything to protect the paint? We painted onr and out sealer but its all flaking off in big chunks nd falling apart...
Not sure what has gone wrong there, did you apply the sealer first or after painting?

Seeing that it's water based emulsion, is it not vulnerable to being washed away or being discoloured when it may be mopped with hot water each day?
mopping with hot water every day should be ok but if its a commercial area then a two part epoxy would be the best paint to use..

Will the acid remove old paint? If not can I use angle grinder? I’d rather not use paint stripper. Thank you 🙏
I think an angle grinder seems a bit harsh, you might be better of using a sander. A grinder might remove more then just the paint.

I plan to paint my interior floors. Would I need to seal them for a longer lasting finish? What type of product should I use?
Shanae4rmMS Most modern paints are self priming so a sealer is not required but do read the instruction on the paint can or if in doubt you can use a sealer, just means you will still need to apply two top coats. If you do seal the floor first then apply two top coats it should last longer.
EXCELLENT VIDEO...
Thank you for sharing this video...

How long does this last? Lovely work.
Depends on how much foot traffic it gets, it might only last 1 year with high traffic and 10 years with little traffic.

This looks like an unsealed concrete floor. What are your prep recommendations for sealed concrete floors?
Basically the same as the floor needs to be clean so the new paint will stick.

Well done I want to paint stone floor in my kitchen can I use the same technique
Maybe apply a slate sealer first so it soaks in then paint it.

Can you jetwash in the future if it ever gets dirty
Yes you should be able to pressure clean in the future, just be carefull not to hold too close as it might damage or remove the paint. A broom and bucket of soapy water could work just as easy it will depend on how dirty it is.

I've done some rather interesting concepts in it so far, and I have the perfect flooring idea to go with the walls ;)
Cheers!
Tea Time I hope it works out how you want it too.
what color did you use?? i really like it
Colour bond Paperbark.

Water based are the easiest to apply and two part epoxy's are the longest wearing.

How did you not get any paint on the pole or adjacent wall?
Just be careful when rolling and cutting in.

Can I do this at wooden floor? Using water based base, paint and finish?
You can if you want. It should be fine as long as the surface is clean before applying paint.

Side Note: Those birds sound so evil!!

Could l use this method to paint a concrete driveway?
Yes but make sure you get paint that will handle traffic like a car.

What type of paint is this and what color? Is this same type with the wall paint?
The paint used was berger water based paving paint. Colour was colourbond paperbank for memory.

Can I paint such stuff onto a very rough external concrete slab with many cracks and no damp proofing under the slab, which gets very dusty naturally, and is open to weather.
You can, it just might not last as long and you will need to use a longer nap roller if its real rough.

Second video of yours I've watched. You're a master. I'm not worthy!
It does take a bit of time to become a master so don't stress if you don't get it right the first time.
