Sage Emerson Thanks for reminding me of perhaps the crappest piece of TV known to man. Bailey, Davies, Jupitus, Carr can all choke on a fat one for their smug, self indulgent crap attempt at humour. Like Stephen though.
I like Alan Davies, but it was sad that poor Stephen Fry couldn't get his words out. Not only the fact of having a giggle fit, but they wouldn't exactly let him speak. I still laugh to this day. Always remember, Stephen is the star, for he is, of course, as declared in 1987, "Gorgeous and high and true and fine and fluffy and moist and sticky and lovely."
As much as I love Stephen Fry...Ryan OWNED in this one. His questions are so natural, and move the story along. Stephen's questions are clever by themselves, but clunky in-dialogue.

The game is about quick fire responses, too much of a delay gets you buzzed out. Drew Carey did it that way too. Once at the end of a show somebody was at Drew’s desk buzzing too quickly, they had to be told to slow down. It might have been Chip.
FangsFirst That's quite correct 😁 English speakers tend to aspirate their unvoiced dental consonants (note the difference between the T in 'tap' and 'step'), so it sounded to me like he was going for 'es tu Brute?' It turns out he did get the quote right!
"Et" can be short for "etiam" ("even"). Famous line from the Aeneid: "Timeo danaos et dona ferentes": "I fear Greeks, even bearing gifts". (Usual but wrong English version: "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts".)
lol never had a chance to see the UK show, only saw it in the US. I never realized Colin and Ryan were inmprov masters LONG before their appearances on the US Who's Line.
I'm a Canadian teenager who now lives in Belgium after studying in the States for the past two years and recently have visited England. I find it ironic that they reference all four of my favourite countries in the opening minute.
I don't understand why so many people dislike Clive Anderson as host. He doesn't seem as...chummy with the performers as Drew was, and Drew also seemed punchier, but I think Clive was able to deliver humor, just in a drier way. My biggest problem with him is his trigger-finger on the buzzer.
He has 0 charisma...he would fit more in a quiz program. He has anything but an entertaining personality...that directly translates to him disrupting the flows of this game.
I found I had an affinity for the program the minute I discovered it, and I'm 20 years old and neither American nor British. British culture has been diffused over the globe the way American culture is today, and I think now it's more a matter of how much 80's Britian influences a particular individual's milieu.
did you know that Drew was made to improvise in the US? he didn't want to do it but the only way that they could get the show commissioned was if Drew would play too. Ryan said so in an interview and I think Colin might have too. These days Drew can play with the best of them (on their level) but that’s only because of the practice he’s had.
Amazing to see Stephen Fry in this old clips. Three cheers for Latin, built in a day, et tu Brute, Ides of March and calling out Josie for the Parthenon glitch. Ryan and Colin were great too but Stephen showed his improv chops to immediately come up with all those references.
Only just found this one, had no idea Stephen Fry of all people was on Whose Line. But does he know what they say about the acropolis where the Parthenon is?
An attempt at some Stephen translation: "Nonne bonum caelum est?" "Isn't the sky good?" On the second one, he could either be referring to the day or the game: If the day: "Sic semper haec uiguit?" "Has it always been this wonderful?" If the game: "Sic semper haec huic huic?" "Does it always come to this?" Either way, they're rough translations.
Actually: Stephen ENG Joesie ENG Ryan CAN Colin CAN Ryan and Colin hold Canadian citizenship (Ryan parents are both Canadians as well) and both lived in Canada for their teens and got their starts in Canadian comedy troupes before getting jobs on this show. Although Colin has joint Scottish (where he was born before his parents emigrated to Canada) and Ryan has joint American (because his parents were living in Seatle when he was born)
Actually both Ryan and Colin hold Canadian citizenship. So technically they are both Canadian as well. Although Ryan hold joint American and Colin hold joint Scottish citizenship. Colin moved to Canada @ 7, Ryan @ 10 (AND his parents are Canadians) They both got their career starts in Vancouver @ TheaterSports and then Toronto's Second City comedy troupe. So I would say that they would both be Canadian comedians.
@KidsWithGuns1992 you got it! Ryan and Colin and Grag and Chip ( i think, and I think brad) all started in England, when the show was droped after ten years Ryan and Colin and Drew Carrie started it in the US.
Well the answer is obvious....they were on the UK version and were brought over on the US version. Pretty sure Drew Carey got the show made after he already worked with Ryan on the Drew Carey show
I wasn't trying to say they aren't Canadian citizens but that they aren't Canadian's by birth. By birth Ryan is American and Colin is Scottish. That's all I was trying to say. Obviously some people disagree though because apparently I have some thumb downs 0.0
Ryan said something like 'he knew he was bad at it but there was no way out so we [I assume him, Col, Wayne, and some regulars] would take him out to clubs on the weekend.' [so he could learn] I think that now he enjoys it, it seems like it would be fun to do after all. But at the start he hated having to do in on TV because he knew that the others were so much better. He was a sitcomic after all! they had been earning their keep with Improv for years! I think that Drew had never plaied before..
Ryan was born to Canadian parents and so has had Canadian citizenship since birth. The only thing that would make him American is the fact that his parents were working in America when he was born. And Colin spent most of his life in Canada barely even remembers Scotland. Both of them spent most of the childhood they could remember and their early adulthood in Canada. They are Canadian.
The UK version came first. [1988, and when it finished in 1998 the US started airing a version.] :) Colin has more hair than he does in the US version and they all look younger too.
I love how in order to beat Steven Fry, you just have to be factually incorrect. He can't just ignore that!

I agree

Stephen's Latin:

'Is it always like this?' [wrong gender]
'Even you, Brutus?' [Shakespeare's Julius Caesar]

The Parthenon is indeed in Athens, and not Rome.

He definitely ruins some scenes with his buzzing.
K-leb Because he’s a complete arse!

I grew up watching the Clive Anderson era shows. No issues here.
