Laid back thanks to his druggie habits? Has he actually stopped snorting cocaine, his drug of choice? His choice to be a junky for some years, and I have no respect for such feeble people who then try and make money from selling their autobiographies a few dismal, needy years at a time.
Peggy Webb So you're judging someone purely based on a chemical they put into their body, of their own free will, in private. He's an incredibly intelligent and articulate man who's been through a lot of hardships. Maybe its not good for him, but I see it as pretty pathetic to judge him on something he did in the past that has affected no one but himself.
***** "....and beneath that of course, we find...the floor....does the floor 'work' for you?...Is it a fatal floor?" (I remember that 'fatal floor' gag got an affectionate groan from the audience :) and my personal favourite.... "I'm reminded of one of those occasions where one is asked to sleep with someone one doesn't know particularly well, consequently i was nervous, and the whole thing was a disappointment." That made me laugh so hard because it pretty much describes every one night stand i've ever had :)
xD! You know it so well! I love the critics sketch. -"It's not your cup of tea?" - "No, no" *points to a mug* THATS my cup of tea.." xD Hugh and Stephen are geniuses!
Agree! He's witty and amazingly intelligent, yet down-to-earth and frank at the same time. There are a lot of famous people I like, but very few I /really/ respect, and Fry's gotta be one of them.
love how well he can articulate his views, not aggressive at all or forcing his opinion on you. He just tells it to you fair and straight (no pun) and is truley genuine about it, can never get over what a nice humble guy he is
What a very intelligent, eloquent, thoughtful man Stephen is. One of the very best guests on this show by far, and as far removed from pompous as it is possible to get.
Well I'm pleased that worked! I just felt like seeing Stephen Fry's 101 so I typed "room 101" into the search bar, lo and behold this video is the first in the list. No need to search for Fry, the they just assume you are if not specified xD
I remember seeing this in the 90s. I was a teen and I have always remembered it. Great episode -I'm not sure if this was 2001 - Oh it was: 12 March 2001
Best episode ever. I agree with everything Stephen says on this. I love Stephan, He's funny and you can actually feel yourself getting more intelligent from watching him.
The only reason I looked him up was because of the Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip song where he says "thou shalt not question Stephen Fry". It worked out great, I'm happy to say!
@Shadrach1 well said mate. Stephen Fry is a jewel in the British crown, he's loved from the upper class right down to the common man. He is a genius but so down to earth and humble, I love him. Peace.
I think he was on about professional critics, whose life revolves around insulting peoples work, and how they can spend no more than a few paragraphs totally slating a whole group of people which has taken a great deal of work to complete. And I agree with Stephen.
I preferred Merton in Room 101 'cos he actually laughed at things. He kind of has a character in HIGNFY. And I just love Stephen Fry. I can't believe he went to jail when he was younger, haha.
Fry is a homesexual Atheist comedian and is extremely inteligent. I am so proud to have been alive in the same time and place. That's why he is a treasure. He is also one of my 5 eternal diner party guests.
dose anyone know if there is going 2 b another round of QI soon i just love that show and stephen fry and alan davis they made the show worth watching if anyone knows please tell me love u stephen and alan please come back we miss u.
"You told people what was wrong with the stuff they would do. And you did that all your life? You know, I think that is just a terrible waste of life."... Isn't that exactly what Saint Peter does?
@amazingrandy900 I kinda have you beat on that, in the couple days after I watched this video I blew through the first three seasons of it. My favorite show by far right now. Is Rich Hall really popular in the UK? He always gets really healthy applause.
There's a slight difference in the fact that critics are paid to do it as their job, and he was voicing his opinion on something, which is the point of Room 101.
This is one episode that I never get tired of watching. Stephen Fry is the dog's bollocks (that means he great, for those who have no understanding of certain phrases), he probably could have stopped Hitler just by speaking to him. Steve is the man!
Does anyone know what the french words he was using to describe Germaine Greer were? The second one sounded like fin savon, but that can't be right, that means "end soap"
one of the definitions of beauty (according to the aust. oxford dictionary 2nd edition) is "a fine specimen". whatever you may think of a cockroach aethstetically, it is a fine specimen of an organism. it is possibly the most resilient of macor-organisms on the planet. p.s. adore stephen fry:)
My second language is French ( live in Belgium) so I was pretty sure, but took your advice and looked it up and it said; knap, intelligent, slim, wijs, geleerd, wijze which is Dutch for smart, bright, learned,...
He wasn't saying that man always ruins nature. He was saying that nature is unconditionally beautiful, and that the only ugly things you will see are man made. He acknowledges that man can create beauty, but at the same time is reposnsible for 100% of the uglification of nature.
@ColonelHoraldo There's a difference between critisizing something, wether it be a film or a book or some music as a person - and being in a profession where's your sole job to critisize things. A huge, massive difference.
Stephen's northern irish accent (i.e. MY accent) is actually quite good. Another reason to adore him, methinks lol (in a totally platonic way, of course).
@Dionysos37 as true as it is, i'm fairly certain oscar wilde was the first to come up with that idea. don't quote me on that, but i remember hearing it before, credited to wilde, and considering fry is such a massive fan of his, it wouldn't surprise me. but yes, fry is as eloquent as ever :)
Let's be honest shall we? Every single person in that audience would have voted by show of hands with confidence if Stephen Fry had said: "I think we should put feathers in Room 101. They're terrifying things." It was Stephen Fry who said it, after all! :)
Thanks for the answer, i agree its defiantly not as generalized as he states, however i do agree with the connotations behind what he is saying... and i do understand what your saying now, see, every youtube comment doesn't have to end in an argument :)
If there's one thing that seems to unite most of Britain's film & TV critics, it's a hatred of Stephen Fry. They often accuse him of being "smug", or the "stupid person's idea of an intellectual". Very much the ultimate pot and kettle case.
is there any about clowns, because i'm doing this for my English course work and i'm looking at this for ideas but i really need help, let me know? thanks :)
I don't care if he is a posh comedian .. I say he's a national treasure and laid back .. he's been through shit and survived
Laid back thanks to his druggie habits? Has he actually stopped snorting cocaine, his drug of choice? His choice to be a junky for some years, and I have no respect for such feeble people who then try and make money from selling their autobiographies a few dismal, needy years at a time.
Peggy Webb You mean the three that he's published, 1997, 2010 and 2014.

+neomcghee I would make a cake for that party.
+samwiseshanti is cheese cake a real cake or just cooked cheese?
how very true. i could listen to him for hours. a very witty and intelligent bloke. a national treasure. i love this episode.
atvmidlands uk
The point Stephen makes at the end is just brilliant : ) I love that glorious person!!
Classic. Pure pleasure listening to Stephen.
stephen fry has always been so well spoken! he's quite amazing. legend.
The last minute of this is GOLD!
I love the few lines from "A Bit Of Fry And Laurie"!
Mary Kelly Yes! The film review bit !

Yes they are. Quite so, quite so, quietly so, quietly sowington :)
xD I read that in Stephens voice
Agree! He's witty and amazingly intelligent, yet down-to-earth and frank at the same time.
There are a lot of famous people I like, but very few I /really/ respect, and Fry's gotta be one of them.
"oh god...oh god it's a collector's plate."
I will watch that again and again and still find it funny.
love how well he can articulate his views, not aggressive at all or forcing his opinion on you. He just tells it to you fair and straight (no pun) and is truley genuine about it, can never get over what a nice humble guy he is
wow i have believed that comment on beauty for years, but how can he so eloquently put it into words? Stunning.
I love this man.
I both love & hate him.
I think Stephen makes a great arguement. I love the way he talks about things.
What a very intelligent, eloquent, thoughtful man Stephen is. One of the very best guests on this show by far, and as far removed from pompous as it is possible to get.
He's fantastic.
I learn things when I watch this man speak, so I think this is worthy of my time.
I love the way Stephen Fry talks.
"She does make me vomit, I'm sorry to say." Ha.
What a beautiful mind he has x
"It seems to me it works on several levels" - thats class, go on the Fry.
Stephan is so brilliant, no wonder he is so well liked. He is amazing XD
i could listen to this guy for hours , if i had a quarter of his intelligence and wit id be a happy man
Oh, God I love him. He says what I want to and people actually listen.
That critique at the end of man made beauty was so true.
It's impossible to dislike Stephen Fry
Well I'm pleased that worked! I just felt like seeing Stephen Fry's 101 so I typed "room 101" into the search bar, lo and behold this video is the first in the list.
No need to search for Fry, the they just assume you are if not specified xD
it's good to know that both DLSVSP and Stephen Fry are getting noticed
We should petition that everything be presented by David Mitchell
i love how steve can just slay someone with only two or three words.
I remember seeing this in the 90s. I was a teen and I have always remembered it. Great episode -I'm not sure if this was 2001 - Oh it was:
12 March 2001
The 'works on 5 levels' thing is in the 'Argue the Toss' sketch from A Bit of Fry and Laurie!
Room 101 is truly a remarkable program :)
Amasing speech at the end there.
I love watching the changes in hairstyle Stephen and Paul have. :P
Stephen Fry would be one of the top guests to invite at your dinner party.
Best episode ever. I agree with everything Stephen says on this. I love Stephan, He's funny and you can actually feel yourself getting more intelligent from watching him.
What a guy, what a comedian... 'Nothing against the Northern Irish... indeed, who would dare?' fantastic.
Oh my gosh, that must be new. Thank you.
That's a pretty good indicator that I will enjoy the person's work. Their other favorite target is Ken Branagh, and I've loved most of his films.
The only reason I looked him up was because of the Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip song where he says "thou shalt not question Stephen Fry".
It worked out great, I'm happy to say!
loll... whenever he talks about TV critics... it reminded me of "and now, welcome to 'Oh no, not another one'"
xD
@ThreeWordsFirstWord Original Air Date-12 March 2001, from IMDb!
We should petition for hour-long lectures by Fry on our screens in the style of the one he gave at the end about guilt.
haha, nice flashback to A bit of Fry and Laurie by Stephen :D
Love Stephens Northern Ireland Impression. Absolutly perfect
I just thought I should watch some Stephen Fry to make myself feel better, so works
I love the old Room 101
Stephen doesn't mind naming names does he....bless his heart.
@Shadrach1 well said mate. Stephen Fry is a jewel in the British crown, he's loved from the upper class right down to the common man. He is a genius but so down to earth and humble, I love him. Peace.
Fry nicely twigged Merton's 'working-class' act at 3:47 Merton's facial reaction was classic.
I think he was on about professional critics, whose life revolves around insulting peoples work, and how they can spend no more than a few paragraphs totally slating a whole group of people which has taken a great deal of work to complete. And I agree with Stephen.

Stephen Fry is a legend
Thank you, at least someone understood what was meant. =)
"You told people what was wrong with the stuff they would do. And you did that all your life? You know, I think that is just a terrible waste of life."... Isn't that exactly what Saint Peter does?
He's had his life, chilling in the Canaan with his mates.
@amazingrandy900 I kinda have you beat on that, in the couple days after I watched this video I blew through the first three seasons of it. My favorite show by far right now.
Is Rich Hall really popular in the UK? He always gets really healthy applause.
As parodied splendidly by Fry and Laurie in their "Argue the Toss" sketches.
this is a good idea for a show. Did David Mitchell ever do an episode? It could easily go for a few hours.
Stephen Fry is lovely lovely.

your such a happy fellow
I can't agree more. In fact, can't we have a show where Stephen Fry just talks about what he hates?! Haha
Poets and philosiphers are the people who say what intelligent people dont feel the need to say...
I love them :D lol
Stephen Fry is a credit to humankind.
i saw him recently on top gear, he looks great!
one of the definitions of beauty (according to the aust. oxford dictionary 2nd edition) is "a fine specimen". whatever you may think of a cockroach aethstetically, it is a fine specimen of an organism. it is possibly the most resilient of macor-organisms on the planet. p.s. adore stephen fry:)
A Greek style party to see her and the plates off could be a smashing idea. :-)
ignore, me not only is the date on the 'about video' its also shown on the plate on the second part.
its 2001!! :-p
there is, series f starts in september.
That Northern Irish accent was spot on lol
In a way it's really sad that Fry doesn't like professional critics, because as he showed when discussing the commemorative plate, he's superb at it.
1:57 for those looking for Fry's Mark Cousins impression
How I would love to sit and talk to Stephen...
Wonderful on how any levels?
My second language is French ( live in Belgium) so I was pretty sure, but took your advice and looked it up and it said; knap, intelligent, slim, wijs, geleerd, wijze

Stephen Fry is amazing. All hale the stephen fry.
He wasn't saying that man always ruins nature. He was saying that nature is unconditionally beautiful, and that the only ugly things you will see are man made. He acknowledges that man can create beauty, but at the same time is reposnsible for 100% of the uglification of nature.
@TheSammyJJ It's back in a slightly different format soon on the BBC
I just noticed that this guy is from BONES. He's Sealy Booth's Phsyciatrist :D i love bones

bout seven and a half years ago (:
I would like to banish Room 101 anyone who uses the word "iconic", closely followed by anyone talking about "national treasures".
i miss Room 101, i think it's time for a comeback!
I know Paul has now left room 101. Are they gonna do another series with someone else? xx
@Dionysos37
as true as it is, i'm fairly certain oscar wilde was the first to come up with that idea. don't quote me on that, but i remember hearing it before, credited to wilde, and considering fry is such a massive fan of his, it wouldn't surprise me. but yes, fry is as eloquent as ever :)

anyone have any idea when this was aired??
i'm guessing it was 10yr ago, looking at fry's youth!
youtube commenting is a tragic waste of a life too.
that man is just a genius
The problem with the floor is, it only works on one level. And it's not even a fatal floor.
How can anyone help but adore a man who can be describing a "collectible" plate and trace a path between it and the ugliess and violence in society?
is there any about clowns, because i'm doing this for my English course work and i'm looking at this for ideas but i really need help, let me know? thanks :)
Stephen really deserves an applause near the end of this part (which theres was no gap in the spoken words to do so sadly).
They did not say anything about torturing them, they just implied that they would just sit there quietly and be banished from the world.
