The square by the shifter is the emergency shitfer release. In cases the shitfer becomes stuck you can manually override the shitfer. By popping that plastic cover off and release it with a screw driver or something flat..
We just expect better from the great Nissan brand! When you are competing with the Accord and Camry you gotta bring your A game and unfortunately they did not here. However, with the new Nissan rebrand things will hopefully change for the better :)
