    Never shave a double coat. I made that mistake with a border collie. Never looked the same after that.

      As someone else said. It's a myth. Hair is made of dead keratinized cells that grow from the root/follicle out. The only way to damage the hair is to damage the follicle.

      @@brettharter143 its not. After surgery 4years ago the coat is still different, not fully back, worse in quality. So.. yes they do, but its disaster for coat.

    Is it ok to use clippers to shorten the top coat a little? I’ve given my terrier mix a few clean up hair cuts. I still leave a solid 2-3 inches of hair, I’ve mostly just cut her mane down so that it is the same length as the rest of her hair. It’s grown back the same each time. I would take her to the groomers, but she’s a rescue and is terrified when I’m not there. I’ve always worried that she would be the type of dog to stress itself to death at the groomers.

      What kind of terrior is she? Majority of the time, shaving a double coated dog in any shape or form will damage the coat and it will never return to the original state. This can result in the dog being extremely uncomfortable, not being able to regulate body temperature and itchy burning hot spots. I don't think it is wise to shave your dog but I cannot say forsure until I know the breed.

      Whilst groomers don't recommend shaving double coats as it can impact on them negatively, if you are just taking off small bits and so far it hasn't had an impact, or you don't mind if it grows back a bit funny looking, then if it is helping her feel more comfortable then it shouldn't be a major issue. Worth asking your Vet as well just to be sure all is fine with her coat and skin next time you are there, just for peace of mind.

    That undercoat rake looks like the kind that are blades.( like Mars coat king and the furminator) If so, they cut the coat as they go through the coat. Just wanted to give out the warning. I was caught off guard when I used them. I don’t like cutting the outer coat any more than I like shaving it.

    Hi, what is the difference between a fumatior and a rake?

    • @poochesatplay
      @poochesatplay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our understanding is the Furminator has rotating metal teeth, which a simple grooming rake may not. It will depend on the different brand and product you choose.

    My dog had a big matte/knotted on his leg too thick to brush out so I cut it. Now he has a patch missing that's down to the skin. I only cut it, not shaved but since it was down to the skin I'm worried this may effected his double coat?

    • @poochesatplay
      @poochesatplay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It shouldn't do. It is better to cut it out than have it pulling on the skin

    But what can I do if I shaved the coat of my German shepherd without prior knowledge that it could damage it?? She is a 3 yr old dog and was shaved the first time. I am really concerned and scared

      It’ll be fine. I shaved my BC once and his coat grew out fine. I just took care of it and brushed it out daily as usual.

      Just make sure to keep them warm because without their fur coat they are essentially naked and keep them out of the sun to prevent sunburn.

      You german shepherds coat will grow back. But it will take a long time for it to look normal again. It could also grow back a different color. I shaved a patch of hair on a Bassett Hound that we had, due to a wound that needed caring for. The hair grew back the same, except for the color. He had a big patch of brown hair where it used to be black. As she aged, it all blended in, due to the fact that her fur changed colors over time anyway. Due to the aging process. So just keep brushing her coat out don’t shave it again.

      Don't worry! The idea that shaving "permanently damage" the fur is bunk. Hair is dead keratinized cells that grow from the follicle. Unless you've taken off skin you probably haven't damaged the follicle and it'll continue to grow just the same.

    Never shave a collie x husky... thinking it will help with the moulting issue... it doesn't, just makes the easier to pick up long hair into smaller bits that blows into every crevice known go man with the slightest puff of wind.

    I grew up in the tropics however I now reside in Coastal Carolina where it can get quite hot... I've been shearing my double-coated Australian cattle dogs in summer for years but my girlfriend recently said many sources online say it's harmful... this sounds like a giant load of horse crap to me because my animals look fantastic and their athletic performance and cool down is radically improved in extreme heat the moment I take their hair off. If you brush them vigorously for a few days before you get out the Clippers it comes off pretty easy.

      I shaved all my shel ties for years and their coats always grew back perfectly. How could cutting the hair change the growth? That’s kind of ridiculous, but people always like to have contrarian opinions about everything it seems.

    • @Howleebra
      @Howleebra 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alicegoodman4581 yeah, its REDICILIOUS to suggest cutting an animals hair somehow "damages" its future growth.
