      Some groomers are so ignorant that they do it deliberately! Our poor little sheltie, Lucky Penny, was shaved! We moved, and so asked our vet for a recommendation to a really good groomer for Shelties. The groomer, we were told, did grooming for showdogs, specifically Shelties. When we brought Lucky in, it was June, so we asked that his fur be just a tiny bit shorter than the typical, around the feet and so on. When we went to pick him up, he was cut like a German Shepherd! If wasn't a Christian, I would've jacked her against the wall. My poor 17 lb Sheltie was sitting in a cage, vibrating and traumatized. She was nonplussed! "Well, you said shorter!!! ". It took a year to grow back, and the outer coat is nothing like it was. It is now fine consistency like stuffed animal fur, knots constantly ( he gets 30 to 45 of combing daily now), and doesn't have the water resistance it did. Also, it didn't grow evenly, and the vet said, it probably will never be like the beautiful coat he had!
      If you want the ease of a dog you can shave in the summer, buy a poodle!!! Don't ruin your poor Sheltie's beautiful coat!!!

      Please don't! We had a groomer shave our Sheltie 2 years ago, even though we didn't ask her to, ( I almost killed her), and it never grew back right. T he vet said there is a 75% chance that the coat will grow in uneven when you shave a dog not meant to be shaved. My poor little Lucky Penny had a beautiful coat. Now it's choppy, curly, thick in some places, sparse in others. Don't ever do it.

    When you shave a dog with a double coat the downy hair grows faster than the top layer of hair. That's why it looks different is because your mostly seeing the underlay instead of the hair that would normally be the top layer.

      Do you put on a coat to cool yourself? Then technically this is not true. Dogs can live with coat no problem but I think dog people have made a whole mythology around this subject now. I can't say I would see the point in clipping one of the sleddogs unless you really live somewhere fiercely hot.

Most shaved dogs I see are super obese though because they're often owned by people that don't know much about their own dogs and how to take care of one. I have a minitiar Aussie that I'd die for in a heart beat. She's amazing on all levels and I must say it angers me that ppl adopt a dog/pet and won't do their research before taking a razor to their gorgeous fur. It's not only inhumane, it's mean!!! Aussies and border collies, etc. have a Double Coat meaning they have layers of Guard hairs (the long sleek hair) and layers of under coat (shorter fluffy hair that floats in air). When someone does the unthinkable and shaves their poor dog it causes the dog more overheating in the end and destroys their beautiful coat they are rightful to have. If you think they won't shed as much... Guessed wrong! Shaving won't prevent less shedding, will cause overheating, and possibly more matting in the end as their undercoat grows much quicker than their guard hairs do! In the case that your Aussie or other breed of double coated dog has matting, clumps or poo on their fur then lightly trim off only the areas that need it! Another thing is do your research before adopting a breed with such high intelligence and high grooming needs. If brushing everyday is not in your day to day plans then don't take home a pet that requires this kind of devotion as it's not the dogs fault, it's yours! I mean really ppl, best thing to do is adopt a hairless pet if their fur irritates you!!!

I was devastated and EXTREMELY UPSET. He had a beautiful fur coat, and now I’m worried his fur won’t be the same? The groomer gave us probiotics to help with fur growth since it was their mistake. I’m not sure what to do, I’m so scared his fur won’t be the same. Is their anything I can do to help his fur go back to the way it was or is this permanent damage? For anyone reading this, you can also use a flea and tick shampoo. It's very effective and the ticks will drop off when they die. My boyfriend forgot to give his dogs their meds before he left me with his pups for a month, and by the time I realized what was happening, they were covered! Two baths later and they were tick-free, but the bathroom floor wasn't! Try that and a detangling shampoo before you shave the whole coat, and if there are still matted areas after that, you can cut those off. Before you do any of this though, take them to the vet so the vet can do a thorough examination and check for any areas that may be infected.

    Don't really think it's appropriate to call it inhumane, just controversial, youre not really hurting the dog, the dog just can't regulate its own temreture using it's coat, doesn't mean its not normal, he's fine. The owner is capable of taking care of the dog's temperature, it's probably easier for her than grooming the dog, although I will say, of she can't groom a double coated dog, maybe don't get a dog from that breed.

      Unfortunately, most owner's who shave their dogs do not understand - as you don't - that it very much CAN hurt the dog in certain circumstances. Most owner's don't take their dogs temps because they don't know to do so. You can be inhumane and not know it. In this case it is inhumane.

      Thanks for you comment and opinion. It is not actually true, some situations warrant the removal of the undercoat if the dog is shedding. This prevents dogs from shedding in the house and helps prevent people from wanting to shave down their dog to prevent shedding - which it doesn't anyway. It is a simple process to remove the undercoat and is preferable to people wanting to shave down their dogs coat.

      I used a regular slicker brush to take any remaining undercoat out and a pair of blending shears to just even out the ends of the scraggly parts. To fix the neck hair you pretty much have to let it grow back on its own, but you can even out the ends of the top coat to make it look a bit nicer. As long as you stop clipping down the fur it should repair itself somewhat. How much will depend on your dog's coat! Thanks!

Do you think it'd be okay to trim it down some with thinning shears or do you believe it would really harm their coat and insulation?

    • @alldogsaresmart
      @alldogsaresmart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used blending shears in certain spots to clean up a messy double coat but it it still affects the tops coat hairs. If you want to do that just make sure you pick only a few areas and then blend well. Double coated dogs are strategically trimmed with blending shears for dogs shows, so if done right should be OK. But it will have to be kept up. Thanks for your comment!

    My family has a double coated dog. He's 3 months old. During recently due to the extremely hot weather, my brother thought that cutting the dog's hair will cool him down so he shaved my dog. • @alldogsaresmart
      @alldogsaresmart  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is difficult to know exactly how your dog's coat will respond to shaving. I would think that a puppy with a light coat that they usually have won't be as affected by a shave down but to be honest I really have no experience with that. my advice is to avoid anymore shaving down if possible in the future. Thanks.

      The groomers to be trimmed I mean as his fur is damaged and can't regulate temperature properly

    • @alldogsaresmart
      @alldogsaresmart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes the coat grows back nicely and other times it doesn't it really depends on the dog and how many times or how long the coat has been shaved. The longer and more often the less likely the coat will be in good shape after it grows back. Definitely go to the groomer if he needs it, like for a bath and trim, but request not to have him shaved. Make sure you tell them not to shave as some groomers will do it anyway. Also depends on how much matting there is. If there is too much, a shave might be necessary. All you can do really is wait and see how it turns out. It will take some time. I hope that helps.

    I had to shave down our Shih tzu. He suffered greatly in the summer. There was a massive difference in his attitude when he was shaved in the summer as opposed to not shaved.
    I know of a professional groomer called My Favorite Groomer and she shaves dogs down too with a double coat. One is told by the vet for medical reasons to shave down one particular dog all the time.

    • @alldogsaresmart
      @alldogsaresmart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shih Tzus are NOT in the "do not shave" group. Their fur does not react the same way as a double coat to shaving. As a professional groomer I too shaved them down all the time. Many pro groomers shave down because they don't want to lose clients, but unfortunately it is unethical to do so. If a vet has advised someone to shave a dog down there must be a good reason, maybe a skin issue or the owner doesn't want to do any work on the coat. There are very few really good reasons to shave down a double coat.

      I can't tell you what to do with your dog's coat or that it will be OK. The point of the video is to show what actually happens when a double coat is shaved down and to prevent a nice double coat from being ruined. I don't know your dog so I can't give you advice. You will have to judge for yourself whether that is important to you and what your needs are. The majority of dogs get "super hot" in the summer, but will your dog be cooler with a shave down? Are you willing to keep shaving over the years? etc etc. The information in the video is true and correct so use that to make your decision. Thanks for your comment.

Shaving down a dog with health issues is the most humane way to fix an issue with a coat. Shaving a dog once will not likely damage the coat and yes it will grow back. Hi! I had a quick question. I got my aussie a puppy cut, it’s about an inch and a half all around and a little longer on his chest since I heard mixed reviews I thought I’d try it (before I saw this video). Do you think it will grow back on if I leave it alone and literally never do it again?
    His ya grows like crazy to begin with and his coat still looks shiny.

    • @alldogsaresmart
      @alldogsaresmart  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you have an Aussie, shaving will ruin the coat. If it was just one clip it might be OK if you leave it alone and do normal Aussie grooming after this, but you can only wait and see. To prevent the dog from shedding, make sure you brush everyday for a short time (like 2 mins) and do a regular grooming to remove the undercoat ( mostly undercoat rake but normal slicker brushing would probably do it). You don't need to give a puppy cut unless you like the look and don't care about the coat condition (because it will ruin it and make the undercoat overgrow). Thank you for bringing this up. It is grooming Wednesday and I will do a video this morning about Australian Shepherd coats and post it today!

Most importantly, she has baby pink skin beneath it that will burn if it's exposed to the sun. It pains me to see people shave their dogs when the very coat they're shaving off was intended to protect them from the elements like hot Sun 😬 I live at the Beach & see it all the time. I can only imagine the # of dogs each year who get sunburned 🙈 While I'd love to give people the benefit of the doubt, it's my experience that most people shave their dog(s) simply bc they're too darn lazy to put in the time & effort that it takes to properly groom them. As I have said, emergency shave downs are unavoidable. You just have to work with what you have.
