Here’s a tip I discovered: if you go to the input block all the way to the left of the chain, there’s a built in noise gate so that you don’t have to waste an effect slot
Great Vid! I will add one thing - Dual Recs with parallel FX loops lose a lot of everything. I fixed this by messing with the level of the Send/Return signals IN THE POD GO. Hope this helps anyone who had my issue.
Thanks Jason. This video is very helpful for those who just starting out with the Pod Go (or any other Multi F/X unit). So many times people who demo these products are so much in a hurry to get to the product's features, that most of the time they forget to inform us of some of the things that can make owning a product like this satisfying. Thank you again for this video. Note, Id know that you play a lot metal, but, sometimes its important to demo some clean sounds to make your demo complete.
Glad this helped! I do have another video on how I use the POD Go for live solo gigs (for both electric and acoustic): th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
If you're not going to use the amp modeling on the POD Go, switch it to the Del Sol 300 Preamp model before turning it off. That will free up more DSP for the effects.
@@jasonstallworth Yeah different amps require different DSP which they still eat up even when turned off. Preamps use less DSP than amps in general, and the Del Sol requires the least overall. Also, not sure if you knew, there's a noise gate built into the input, so you don't need to burn a slot unless you need a second one.
I did the same with my Headrush MX5 and Mesa Mark V. Worked out great, powerful and elegant. The MarkV didn't need much to begin with, a little bit of comp, delay, chorus for that epic lead tone. What an awesome time to be tinkering with the gear, balancing classic and modern tech.
Thanks so much for the article you wrote around this- so well explained. Really helped me and saved me tons of confusion and potentially saved me money too - thanks!
@@jasonstallworth I understand thank you for the guidance. I assume I keep my marshal amp on clean and good balance on the lows mids and high. Once again thank you 🙏🏼
Your timing on releasing this video is perfect. I've been using my PodGo plugged into the front of the amp (which works) but the four cable method running through the FX loop is a more versatile way. Thank you Jason for the time you spent making this tutorial. Much appreciated..
You’re welcome! Honestly, I’ll probably never use it this way. I prefer individual pedals with my amp and use the POD Go for my live solo gigs that I do around town. I have a video on that as well: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
They're recently upgraded their cabs/mics so IMO you really don't need IRs - the new updates sound great. But I do have a video on that here: th-cam.com/video/WLTBeqQiNG8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=36Ko645maJiTodqn
Well that cable connection system is confusing at first LOL. But it makes sense after thinking about how the effects are to be placed in the chain. Thank you for the vid!
Hey Jason, as always I find your videos to be so helpful! I've been connecting my pod go into the back of my Boss Katana MK II because it doesn't have an fx loop but it does allow me to use it as a power amp Thank you so so much for explaining that I meed to turn off the amp and cab simulation!!
Question?... I just aquired an evh 5150 III 6L6 2x12 combo. I have followed the 4 cable method here and it does work but when I crank the amp its super noisy still. I'm currently using the pod go with just a noise supressor and od for boost in the chain. Any tips on getting it to be virtually silent with the pod go at loud volume?
You’ve got to make sure the appropriate pedals are ‘in front’ of the amp on the POD Go (so that they will be configured the same with your amp if that makes sense) After messing around with this more, I found it better to just use the POD Go for post effects (simple 2 cable method) and use a noise gate pedal in front of the amp. I go a bit deeper on that here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Thank you sir For this setup Just switched to tubes Got me a Mesa Boogie Mini I also have that Line 6 go All this is new to me. Really glad you did this tutorial Thank you very much Sir
you know, ihave tried this previously, but wanted to give it another bash. Wow totally worth it now, thanks to your fantastic video. You have opened a new sound world for me. you got a new subscriber now! Thanks and have a fantastic 2023! All the very best!
My advice for that would be to just use that pedal in front of your amp and just run the POD Go through the effects loop, using the two-cable method. I have a blog post going over all of that in detail here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
The problem now is using the 4-cable method = the tone sounds flat as opposed to just miking my tube amp and getting all the high, mids and low dynamic EQ.. any suggestions?..
It's really hard to tell but you may be trying to use too many features at once. The biggest thing is you have to make sure that the amp and cab within the POD Go are turned off. I have a blog post that goes a little more in depth here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
You can also use the 4 cable method and the Pod's pre-amp modeling. You can bypass your amp's pre-amp. This will then use your amp's power amp to push the modeled t ones tone out through the cab.
Congratulations on the Video. I would like to know how do I go from the clean channel to the distorted one? Is there a way to control this change by pod go? or by the footswich of the amplifier.
I don't think there's a way to change your amp's channel through the POD. I do have a blog post going into more detail and also just using it with the 2 cable method: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
So Jason, do you change the clean channel on the amplifier footswich? I thought of working on a cabinet for the clean sound of the POD, so when I trigger the loop/send, the distorted distorted channel of the amplifier enters. grateful
I just started using my Pod Go with an amp. The only difference is that I use the AMP Out instead of the Main Out on the Pod Go. This way, the signal is not affected by the Pod Go's volume knob. The only thing to keep in mind is that it also bypasses the Pod Go's Global EQ. I guess some people would prefer to be able to control their volume this way but I'd rather know I have a consistent signal level being sent to the amp at all times.
Are going from the Amp Out straight into the guitar input at front of the amp. ? I want to use a PodGo with an Orange Pedal Baby amp like a regular pedal board. Thanks
Dude, thank you SO much. I tried hooking up with the manual (which ended up being the same way here on this video. There must have been some global setting that wasn't shown or I missed/misunderstood. I knew how to disable the cab/IR in global settings, though. I had tried that before to no avail. Now, after setting this up the way described here in this video but going back to AMP out with cab/IR disabled it works! I wasn't going to use it at my gig tonight but I've got more time to mess with it and make some presets so I just might gig with it tonight. Thanks again!!!!
I have the 80 watt evh iconic with iconic half stack. I love the distortion. But I wanna add effects in loop before and after like you did. I bought a line 6 firehawk fx. I just don't wanna lose that distortion. Going to try it this way without any extra fuzz on guitar side just wah . Hopefully no problems. On another note I had a rp1000 digitech and did 4 way as per instructions and screwed up preamp. Had to amp head back. I hope this works without killing that awesome distortion of evh head... I really hope this works. You have been most informative thank you.
Two things I noticed that I would like some clarification. 1 - Do you have to use a TRS (Stereo) cable between the amp Send and the Pod Return? 2 - In the Global settings, do you have the Main Out set to Line or Instrument?
I didn't use any special cables, just the normal instrument cables. I didn't touch any global settings but because it's instrument. I have a blog post going into more details along with the 2-cable method here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@@jasonstallworth I'm currently using a bass amp (Ampeg BA 115) and the "1 cable method" where a cable is connected from the Pod Amp Out to the bass amp Return. Some videos that do this method recommend to bypass (disable) the Pod Cab/IR by setting the Amp Out Source to Pre-Cab/IR. This makes sense because the amp already has a speaker cabinet. However when I did this with my amp setup the sound was awful, so I set the Amp Out Source back to Main Out and the sound was much better. This goes against what I have seen but it's working for me. I may try the "4 cable method" and see what it does but really need to know what to set the Amp Out or the Main Out Level to. Appreciate the response and your link.
thanks Jason - just go my Pod Go and was wondering how to connect using the FX loop to my amp (Hot Rod Deluxe type). I see you're using stereo connectors - that's probably your amp offers stereo send/returns, right? For my amp this would be mono jacks. I saw you using a cable with silent plug to connect to your guitar - but in a reverse way. Normally you would plug the side with the silent plug to the instrument...I'd always be a bit cautious to do that the other way, in order not to short circuit the inputs on the amp facing side, in particular for vintage type of amps when they are switched on. What do you or others think about it? But good man, thanks again for your tutorial.
Yeah, I use the effects loop in my amp. But honestly, I just use the POD Go for my live solo gigs and go direct to the board. I use regular pedals with my amp when I'm playing metal
In this case, you want to turn the amp and cabinet features in the POD Go off. If you're just wanting to use the POD Go amps and effects, it's best to plug it directly into the amp input and just use the clean channel of your amp
I'm pretty sure you can also do all of this on the pedal itself (I.e disable the pods amp + cab and enable your amp) I've just got the pod go and managed to figure it out myself.
Do you have any high pitched digital noise with your pod go underneath the normal speaker hum the the pod go emits constantly on high gain? If you Listen without playing is it there? Mine does Suttle but there, you can hear it with the amp at low volumes on my unit in the background and of course even more when turned up when not playing. In recording its underneath the guitar track lightly. It can be gated out but still present in the guitar track after the fact. Using a Furman power conditioner, everything plugged into the same outlet. High quality cables and away from the computer. Still there even with the computer turned off too. It's digital noise generated exclusively from the pod go. Seperate analog or digital pedals do not do this.
I didn't notice anything like that. But I only did this for a demonstration. I mainly use the POD Go for my live solo gigs: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
Can you please do a video on how to use the POD Go as just an effects stomp box. Where you can use the distortion from your main amp. That would be awesome!
That's actually the way I prefer to use the POD Go with an amp and I elaborated on that in my blog post with details: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Dude I also have a blog post going a little more in depth here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/ I also prefer just using the 2 cable method for effects (I have that in the bog as well)
That’s a great question. This is what I would do: 1) I’d only use the POD Go with the 2-cable method running it through the effects loop of the amp. 2) I’d use maybe an overdrive pedal in front of the amp going to my guitar (not using the POD for this). That’s probably the easiest and most feasible way. The POD Go has some nice effects like reverb and delay that you’d run through the effects loop. But I believe most OD and distortion pedals are going to sound better than the POD version. I also have a blog post that goes over the 2 cable method here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Yeah, that POD Go has some nice effects! I actually only use mine for live solo gigs though, which are mainly acoustic. I've got a video on that here: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
I honestly don't use the POD Go for metal at all. I use is strictly for playing live solo gigs. Here are the details on how I use it: www.jasonstallworth.com/pod-go-lead-guitar-tones/
Soooooo..... total newb here with fancy effects. I set my chain up like yours. As well as the 4 canle method. I have clean setting on my amp. But when I turn on the scream 808 pedal it's not the thick juicy metal tone I want. Am I suppose to have my amp on overdrive?
It may be how you have the pedals setup within the POD Go. My personal opinion is to just use the POD Go for time-based effects and just use the amp's distortion with a real pedal. I know that defeats the purpose of this video but an OD pedal is going to sound better with your amp that the POD Go OD
its nice to play the amp at home with the pod connected, no use hauling the amp to live shows or it bypasses your purchase on buying the podgo..love the tones .. if i was you i would be looking out to get some very good amp ir's
Oh yeah, for my solo gigs, less is more! I'll just be using the POD Go. I just never connected a unit like this to an amp in this way and wanted to see what would happen! But it I were using the amp for a bigger show or with a band, I'd probably stick with actual effects pedals. The POD Go does take a little from the tone. Probably not noticeable to the crowd (oftentimes the crowd doesn't care...only guitar players will notice! lol)
@@jasonstallworth At this time I am waiting for the pedals to arrive.I thought there was a noise gate that did not take up a block.I learned a lot from this post . Thanks. One question is that when I use the pod go through my QSC 10 K I have problems getting a usable feedback.Although there is a you tube video on how to accomplish that have you managed to find that possible ? I love when my amp feeds back ! Thanks again.
@@frankiebananas2784 dude that’s one of the issues with units like the POD Go…they’re just not going to give be you that true response you get from a real amp. You can crank the volume and that can help
Hi Jason - thank you for the video! I'm wanting to use my orange tiny terror amp in the fx loop of the pod go. I looked at using the 4 cable method but there's no send or return on the amp. Is it still doable or not? Thanks! 🙂
I would rather just use the effects through an effects loop of the amp. I wanted to demonstrate this method, but practically I prefer single pedals. I use the POD Go for my live solo shows running it direct through a soundboard
So, if I want to use my Boss RC20r looper pedal, should I plug it in between my guitar and the Guitar In jack? Normally I plug my looper into the effects loop.
Your looper output should be going directly to your soundboard (or output source). You'd plug your effects and everything else that is going to your guitar into the looper input. Hopefully that makes sense. I guess you could use the effects loop as well
Thank you Jason for this very easy to follow video for us players who are new to multi effects processors. I plan to use my Pod Go with my Marshall DSL 40CR with 4 cable method. My question is can you disable the POD Go amp and cabinet and turn on the FX Loos from the Pod Go unit itself without having to connect to a computer? Second, what channel should the Marshall be on, I assume the clean channel? Thanks again for this great video and all the information.
Yes you can turn off the amp and cabinet without connecting the POD Go to a computer. It’s a simple click. And this is an ideal way to use it with a real amp if you just want effects
Watching this video again as I'm going to hook my PG top my Marshall DSL5 combo to see how it sounds compared to my Line6 Power Cab. If it sounds just as good I can return the Power Cab and save myself some money lol.
Thanx alot Jason. But i have no sound after the Fxloop chain. I have a Bugera 333, i made everything as you showed, i mean cables ecc. The sound improved as hell, i mean distortion added to Bugera's gain. But the modulation is off. Any suggestions mate?
Sa your other comment and glad you got it working. I also have a blog post that goes into more detail (as well as the 2-cable method) here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
You and I are worlds apart on "Genre", as I play on a worship team at church! ----haha....BUT your explanations on your Videos are always appreciated, because it's not like you're going to a FIRE! I saw another Video on this topic, connecting to an Amp, with 3 "options", and it was less than three and a half minutes, SO keep up HOW you do these Vids. My Question though is this-----we're doing a special event where I'll be playing AG, and won't run it through the house system, just my Crate Acoustic Amp. I also have an Acoustic patch on my Pod GO. SO, after I turn OFF the Amp and Cab in the Edit, why can't I just run a cable from the Amp OUT on the PG, and plug the other end into the Amp's input? My Amp has two inputs, one being a "clean input" with just a Gain Knob, no FX in the amp. Thanks to anyone with an answer!
We’re not that far apart! I played on worships teams throughout my entire life up until a few years ago (had other obligations that started coming up, nothing bad). In your case, I think I would just use the POD Go through the effects loop of the amp if that’s an option The 2nd and possibly easier option would be to just run the POD Go directly through the amp’s input on the clean channel
@@jasonstallworth Gonna try that second one when we have the need to use an amp in a smaller setting, with me playing AG instead. I also have an "Acoustic" patch I want to try. Otherwise, during a live service, I just send the POD GO into a DI box. No amp on stage. I had a BOSS ME-70 before for 11 yrs, but started acting up. Hence, I bought the POD GO while on sale ----at $375. They were $500, but now, they've even jumped up higher than that! Thanks for your answer....enjoyed it!
Yea... that's what I thought. The effects switch was on as well, on the channel switch. But wouldn't switch. It would just light up and switch but the knobs on the front of the amp are virtually useless.
I wanna use this with my 6505+ but my question is how could I make it so it switches the Chanel too so I want like simple noise gate on dirty then switch to cleans with a chorus and delay is that possible?
That's one of the challenges. The cool thing about using the POD Go is you can have multiple patches with multiple and different effects but there's no way to assign the amp's channel to it. I think the better option would be to get a true switcher that you could connect your amp and pedals to for that. I get it...being one stage, you want as few clicks as possible (preferably just one)
Hi Jason, thanks so much for this video and your blog. Quick question regarding just using the Pod Go for modulation/delay effects into my 5150 effects loop (2 cable method). I see that you need to turn the effects loop on in the Pod Go, does it matter where you put the effects you want to use? Should they be after the loop on the screen? Thanks again for your detailed videos. They really help this old school guy out! 🙂
It depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re using the amps in the POD Go, run it through the clean channel of the amp and adjust the eq how you want. If I were to use this live, I’d want to just use the effects of the POD Go through the effects loop of the amp. A good amp is going to sound way better than the POD Go if you’re playing metal
You can turn the effects on and off as needed. Even better, you may just want to run it through your effects loop instead of using the 4 cable method. I have a write-up here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Thanks for examplaining all this 🙂 I have one question though. Where is the technical difference between this 4 (3) cable method and simply going via amp out? I mean, if one turns off the amp and cab on the Pod and then goes via the amp out into the front of the Amp, where would be the difference? Serious question btw, im not doubting the sense or something. I just want to learn ^^ Oh also, what cables did you use for this? instrument or patch cables.
Thank you Jason, ive meant the third method though 🙂 If you look at the Pods back, there is an "Amp Out". Thats a whole other thing, since you dont use the effects loop of any of the 2 devices. One simply goes out via 1 single cable to the front of the amp. And here i would be interested in the difference, technically. @@jasonstallworth
The problem I had with the Pod Go is that you only have room for two post amp effects aside from the EQ. So having a Chorus, Reverb and Delay available was not an option. Good video Jason \m/
It's inconvenient, but I plan on using Chorus, delay and reverb after my podgo in the fx loop. That'll free up some block for pedals that I don't actually own physically like a Flanger, phaser, EQ etc.
Hey, you guys could have tweaked it. There’s videos out there where they free up some slots, and it was useful, didn’t believe it at first, try it out. It’s great, there’s more room for creativity
Not sure if ppl recommend this but it is EXTREMELY easy to jailbreak the pd go and get rid of the Wah, volume, eq, and everything except for the amp and cab blocks and it opens up way more possibilities. You still have the dsp limits but you can get away with a decent amount of stuff. I have had ZERO issues with having a few jail broken patches and line 6 has no plans to "fix" the ability to do this so it must not be harmful to the unit itself. Highly recommend doing this, there are plenty of videos on it
Hi Jason. Very good and helpful video, thanks. :) How would you say the "responsiveness" of the Pod is, compared to an amp and three-four pedals? Years ago, I tried different multi-boards, and they actually sounded just fine. But it was like there was a certain "lag" between my fingers and the sound from the speakers. For instance, it was much harder to get the guitar to go into feedback (the good kind) than with an amp-pedal setup. But that was perhaps4-5 years ago. Would you say the multiboards are past that now?
Man I just did this video to demonstrate how you could use this method but I never use it this way. I really only use the POD Go for live solo gigs. If I were to use it with an amp for playing metal, I would only run it through the effects loop (2-cable method) for a little reverb and delay and use the sound and gain of the actual amp. I have a post going into more detail here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
I’m a “basement player” I’m not in a band. I love playing guitar by myself it’s a hobby. My instructor had me using a line 6 amp with pre sets at his store. I love the fact that I can play covers with pre sets to most of the songs I play. Rage, Foo fighters, Green Day, Metallica, zztop, ect. I have 5150 iconic combo amp already. I want to use the line 6 pod go with it can I do that with the amp I already have?
For your purpose, I recommend using the POD Go direct through your studio interface if you have a recording setup. Otherwise, with your amp, depending on the type, the easiest way is to just run the POD Go directly through the amp input and just use the amp clean channel. This 4-cable process is a bit overkill. I do have a blog post expanded on this and the 2 cable method: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
I have a JCM 800 SC combo. Can’t get enough gain for solo’s so thinking about getting a Blackstar Dept 10 distortion in front and using pod go for delays, modulation, reverb and noise gate ,also the wah pedal, plus I have an E Lady for flange. We’ll see….BTW great video and playing.I’m a fan now !
If you guys haven't heard about how to jail break patches you are missing out. You can remove any blocks except for the amp and cab. It still has a dsp limit but you can get away with quite a decent amount at one time. Line 6 has no plans to stop this from being possible so I doubt it is handful to the unit. I have had ZERO problems and it makes it way more versatile. You can jailbreak 1 patch at a time and keep the other patches "stock"
Jason… Ibanez huh… I really dig the licks man.. nice POD Go. I got one and I sleigh guitar with it but to be forward… I’m new to setting up my studio equipment.. only been doing it about 16 months and I’m using multiple pedals like mooer GE150 with Spark and a Delay and a Boss wl50 wireless guitar adapter you plug. I’m new tk trying to compose videos and the studio stuff but looking forward to you seeing a couple of my videos. They need lots of work but I feel confident about playing something people can like. Haha thanks again
Awesome, yeah, get those videos out there! I actually don't use this method in this video at all...I just wanted to demonstrate how to do it. I mainly use my POD Go for my live solo gigs, which are mainly acoustic and I integrated some electric with looping. Here's the latest: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
@@jasonstallworth sure you can. Select your amp/preamp block and then hold down the footswitch that controls the fx loop. Pod go will ask to assign this footswitch to the amp block, click yes. This way you can switch between your amps preamp and the selected line6 preamp with one footswitch.
🤘🏻 My Peavey amp does something similar with usb to my laptop how I change the settings without having to bend up and down and repeat . I’m a simple guy tho ,don’t use a lot of FX when I do tho is just delay chorus reverb the others aren’t for me never found a need to reverse my sound modulate or slice or synth you know 🤷🏻♂️
I’m all honesty, I’ll never use this method is a real-life (stage) scenario. I prefer my pedals and like you, I keep things simple! But I wanted to test this and put it out there just to see!
@@jasonstallworth @Ken Wheeler is correct. In the software, if you click on the "Input" block you can turn the gate on or off as well as set the threshold and delay. This is shown on page 13 of the owners manual.
great video, I found out if you use the amp out instead of the line out your amp will have its full tone, the line out seems to take away and darken the tone, give it a try.
Thanks Jason very informative video hands-down the best sound I get from my pod go with my fender hot rod Deville 212 I can get the sound a lot warmer and clearer and not so bitey the effects sound so much better also I can’t wait to try this on my other amps especially my boss katana artist I love that the control panel is left live on the amp I really like the method where you go from the amp out on the pod go instead of the Main out to the fx return on the amp for a more consistent signal to the amp as your viewer suggested in the comments also the comment about loading the Del sol 300 amp even though it’s turned off to save DSP was very very helpful I would have never figured this stuff out on my own thanks again !!!!
I was impressed I’ve tried playing the pod go through a lot of different platforms PA systems powered speaker systems and a host of different amps plugged into only the effects loop return of the amp this four cable method is the cats meow if you don’t need stereo As you said it does sound great through my Deville and equally as good through my katana artist I will never hook the pod go up to an amp with a single cable again
Every effect i put infront of the Mono FX block WORKS. Every effect ( tried all reverbs and delays) i put after the Mono FX block Dont affect the sound at all.
ok...I checked out your blog post and it is double golden! Complete and easy to understand complete with step by step illustrations/photos.......can't thank you enough. Will keep a shortcut on my desktop to this post.
You could definitely just run the POD Go through the effects loop so use delays, reverbs, etc. Actually, if I were going to use this live, that's what I'd do because I like the noise gate pedal (MXR Smartgate) more than the POD Go ng. And the EVH doesn't need an od pedal.
Is it necessary to use a computer to edit your signal chain? Can I do everything you did with the pod go itself? Because I cannot get mine to work doing what you’ve done. I even have a 5150… 🤷🏼♂️
So are these tones coming from the pod go or the amp? If I wanted to use the pod go essentially as an effects pedal but use the amp and the heart how would I hook that up?
I bypassed the POD Go amp/cab and set it up to use only the effects. I kinda look at it as replacing your effects pedal board and being able to route effects before the amp, such as an OD, and using some effects through the effects loop, like delay and reverb. I also have a blog post that goes into more detail (as well as the 2-cable method): www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Are you plugging the POD Go into your interface or using your POD Go as an interface going directly to your computer? I’d the latter, it’s probably just a setup in your DAW that you’ll beee to change to assign the POD Go as your input source.
Hey Jason , can I ask are you able to switch between your amps dirty and clean channels whilst hooked up this way ? I have an orange super crush hooked up 4CM and I don’t seem to be able to get my amps dirty channel or any of the controls on my amp
Yes you can switch channels easily with the 4-cable method. It's essentially like having pedals in front of your amp and other pedals in the effects loop so that doesn't impact changing amp channels. I go into more detail on my blog post here (I also go over the 2-cable method): www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@@jasonstallworth that’s what I thought but for some reason with my orange amp head this does not happen , cheers I’ll check out the blog page You wouldn’t have any ideas why my amp will not do it ??
Hi, sorry if this is a bit unrelated, but as I understand it the Pod Go has only four free effects blocks - would that be enough, in your opinion, specifically for someone who is new to and learning about guitar effects.
I wouldn't recommend the POD Go if more effects and experimenting with those is what you want. You'd be better off going with something like the Helix.
Great video Jason! I love my Podgo but yeh as you pointed out, it sort of takes something away from the natural tone of the amp, that's why I mainly use it for quick recordings at home and also for small gigs where I can just go straight in to the PA with no need to bring my heavy amp! I tried using the 4 cable method and wasn't satisfied with the sound I got, maybe I did it wrong... will def try again after watching your video! I noticed the first cable you plugged in to your real amps send was a balanced TRS cable, was there any reason for this? I've also started using the MAIN OUTPUTS and the AMP OUT simultaneously (like in the first diagram of the quick start manual) sending a cab emulated signal direct to the PA and and non cab emulated signal to the front of my real amp... of course making sure that in Global Settings the Amp Out Source is set to Pre Cab/IR (if it's set to Main Out, the real amp sounds shit!) The only sort of bad thing I find doing this is that the volume of the signal sent to the front of the amp is really really loud, do you know if there's a way to reduce the signal output of the AMP OUT on the Podgo!? Many thanks again, really enjoyed your video and playing! :)
Dude, I honestly never use this method (4-cable) but just wanted to demonstrate of how connect everything as I was curious. The only thing I use the POD Go for on a regular basis is my live solo gigs and for those I'm playing mostly acoustic and a little electric here and there (I like to loop a rhythm and solo over it...that spices up the gigs and the crowd seems to enjoy that!) I am going to test using the POD Go with my amp but only through the effects loop. I'm hoping that won't take too much from the amp's tone but we'll see!
@@jasonstallworth Nice one, yep same here, I mainly use the Podgo for small solo gigs without my amp, just straight to PA, and also home studio work too... for those things I find it's an amazing tool! But in conjunction with my amp (I use a JC120 with mainly clean sounds) no matter what method I use I find it always takes away from the natural tone of my amp. The best method for me is using the Podgo's Amp Out sending a non cab emulated signal to the front of my amp and with a few tweeks on my presets I can get it sounding good and pretty much use the podgo as you would an analogue pedal board... but I can still hear the difference in tone, which sucks! Will probably end up getting a dedicated active FRFR Cab just to use with the Podgo! Best of luck with it dude! :)
Hi Jason, Love your work mate. I recently brought an EVH 5150 6L6. I was wondering if it is possible to add extra pedals as well using your amp tone in this 4 cable mix and also if it is possible to run the pod go through the effects loop as you would normal pedals and still run an Overdrive/Noise Gate/Guitar etc straight into the input on the front of the amp so all to not loose tone and also let you have the option of more effects?
That makes sense as a noise gate and overdrive pedal is probably going to sound better than the POD Go versions. In that case, I'd just run the POD Go through the effects loop of the amp (2 cables, not 4 cables) so that you're using the POD Go delays, reverbs, choruses, etc. And then just run your od and gate in front of the amp as you normally would.
Have you used your pod go as a amp modeler in the loop bypassing the evh preamp? If so I would like to see you do a video and hear your opinion on the quality of the sound of amp mods using the real tube amp loop for power . Thank you
Hi! I'm looking for info on this but all videos showing how to do the 4c method do not explain how to bypass the amps preamp and use the modelling in the pod go. How do you set up the podgo to be able to switch between preamp modelling and the actual preamp with the 4cm?
@@bbu33 With snapshots you can turn effects, amps, loops to which ever state you wish them to be in. As in turn off the pre amp in the loop and turn on the pods preamp at the same time. Not the cab. In order to bypass your amps pre-amp and bring in one of the pedals pre-amps to replace it. Used to be able to do it with the Pod HD500X. Under 4 cable method your amps preamp is in the loop.

Here’s a tip I discovered: if you go to the input block all the way to the left of the chain, there’s a built in noise gate so that you don’t have to waste an effect slot
Oh cool, that's great to know!
Yup
Input block??
The evh noise gate not the greatest but gotta love some of that feed back.
What is input block ?
Great Vid! I will add one thing - Dual Recs with parallel FX loops lose a lot of everything. I fixed this by messing with the level of the Send/Return signals IN THE POD GO. Hope this helps anyone who had my issue.
Thank you for that 🤘
Thanks Jason.
Very much so. :)
If you're not going to use the amp modeling on the POD Go, switch it to the Del Sol 300 Preamp model before turning it off. That will free up more DSP for the effects.
Thank you for this…I didn’t realize you could do that
@@jasonstallworth Yeah different amps require different DSP which they still eat up even when turned off.
Yeah it's really cool for adding delay and reverb!
Thanks Jason, more simple vids on the podgo are needed like this one because most stuff goes a little over my head. You teach, not just play....
You’re welcome and glad this helped! Here’s a video on how I use it for my live solo gigs: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
This is the best explanation/video of this method I have seen! Great tones and playing! Thank you!
Awesome to hear this. I was so confused when I first started connecting everything! lol
Thanks so much for the article you wrote around this- so well explained. Really helped me and saved me tons of confusion and potentially saved me money too - thanks!
Awesome to hear that!
Thanks ...U Explain it the best out of every one else
Awesome, I'm glad this helped! I have a blog post that goes a little deeper: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@@jasonstallworth I will read.. thanks!
Im not sure if you mentioned it but Im guessing you have the cabinet's dials flat and clean? Any tweaks we should do that you can advise?
It's best to turn the amp and cab completely off in the POD Go. You're just using it for the effects with your real amp
@@jasonstallworth I understand thank you for the guidance. I assume I keep my marshal amp on clean and good balance on the lows mids and high. Once again thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for putting this info together, I picked up a Pod Go recently and this really helps make sense of it all.
Glad this helped. I also have a blog post that goes into more detail here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Thanks for the video Would be nice if you do a video with the fx lopp after the pod go amp and IR
Yeah it was very confusing at first!
Hey Jason, as always I find your videos to be so helpful!
I've been connecting my pod go into the back of my Boss Katana MK II because it doesn't have an fx loop but it does allow me to use it as a power amp
Thank you so so much for explaining that I meed to turn off the amp and cab simulation!!
🤘
Question?...
I just aquired an evh 5150 III 6L6 2x12 combo.
I have followed the 4 cable method here and it does work but when I crank the amp its super noisy still.
I'm currently using the pod go with just a noise supressor and od for boost in the chain.
Any tips on getting it to be virtually silent with the pod go at loud volume?
You’ve got to make sure the appropriate pedals are ‘in front’ of the amp on the POD Go (so that they will be configured the same with your amp if that makes sense)
After messing around with this more, I found it better to just use the POD Go for post effects (simple 2 cable method) and use a noise gate pedal in front of the amp.
I go a bit deeper on that here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@jasonstallworth awesome. Thanks for the tips brother.
Thank you sir
For this setup
Just switched to tubes
Got me a Mesa Boogie Mini
I also have that Line 6 go
All this is new to me.
Really glad you did this tutorial
Thank you very much Sir
Glad this helped!
you know, ihave tried this previously, but wanted to give it another bash. Wow totally worth it now, thanks to your fantastic video. You have opened a new sound world for me. you got a new subscriber now! Thanks and have a fantastic 2023! All the very best!
Thank you for the sub and really glad this helped! Happy New year to you as well
I Have an external tubescreamer that I want to use with this method. How do I plug it in with the pod go?
My advice for that would be to just use that pedal in front of your amp and just run the POD Go through the effects loop, using the two-cable method. I have a blog post going over all of that in detail here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Hey Jason, great vid! Question, did you use speaker cables from the pod to amp?
I just used instrument cables for everything
The problem now is using the 4-cable method = the tone sounds flat as opposed to just miking my tube amp and getting all the high, mids and low dynamic EQ.. any suggestions?..
It's really hard to tell but you may be trying to use too many features at once. The biggest thing is you have to make sure that the amp and cab within the POD Go are turned off.
I have a blog post that goes a little more in depth here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@@jasonstallworth Thanks Jason... Got 2 Excited had to watch again
Can u please share global settings value when connecting with 4 cable method and when connecting to powered stereo speakers ?❤
I don’t recall that but I didn’t change anything in that regard. Just set it up to where you’re bypassing the amp and cab on the POD Go
You can also use the 4 cable method and the Pod's pre-amp modeling. You can bypass your amp's pre-amp. This will then use your amp's power amp to push the modeled t ones tone out through the cab.
That's another great way to use it...that will truly test those amp models coming through a real cab!
how do you do this? what's the routing on the pod go
100% Brilliant Mate!!! I used this method to connect my old Line 6 Bass Pod Pro and it worked perfectly!!! Cheers to you!
Glad this helped. Line 6 has some really cool effects so I'm glad we can use them in this way!
Thanks for this. I just got mine and 4 cable is the way to go.

I thought of working on a cabinet for the clean sound of the POD, so when I trigger the loop/send, the distorted distorted channel of the amplifier enters. grateful
Thank you man this helped me so much.
🤘
I just started using my Pod Go with an amp. The only difference is that I use the AMP Out instead of the Main Out on the Pod Go. This way, the signal is not affected by the Pod Go's volume knob. The only thing to keep in mind is that it also bypasses the Pod Go's Global EQ. I guess some people would prefer to be able to control their volume this way but I'd rather know I have a consistent signal level being sent to the amp at all times.
That's good to know, thank you! I'm still learning this thing!
Great bit of info thanks ;p
It should work just fine with the 4 cable method. It's a cool method to get an array of effects!
Hey Jason, you can change the Amp Channel with the pod go and keep the pedal assignments for each channel?
In this case, you want to turn the amp and cabinet features in the POD Go off. If you're just wanting to use the POD Go amps and effects, it's best to plug it directly into the amp input and just use the clean channel of your amp
Should the treble bass and all effects on the head be turned off ? Plus what about the EQ on the guitar itself ?
There's no right or wrong answer. This is something you'll want to experiment with
Thank you Thank you so much. Easy to follow great results.
@@jasonstallworth thanks for your reply. This does not happen as stand alone unit, without amps or pc. With amps and pc it is there.
Hey I hooked up mine exactly like you said and I have very low volume and can’t seem to turn it up at all. Amp is Peavey 6505+
Dude I also have a blog post going a little more in depth here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
I also prefer just using the 2 cable method for effects (I have that in the bog as well)
If you have some independent pedals you want to use, how/where would you connect them?? Thanks. Newbie bassist here so this is very helpful.
That’s a great question. This is what I would do:
1) I’d only use the POD Go with the 2-cable method running it through the effects loop of the amp.
Just got a used pod go to try out. Great video, thank you ,it was a great help in setting up the basics with my amp .
Yeah, that POD Go has some nice effects! I actually only use mine for live solo gigs though, which are mainly acoustic. I've got a video on that here: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
the best tutorial by far. Thank you so much from france
🙏🤘
Hi.. Jason, you ever used 5150 amp model on Pod Go? Sounds great and close to the real amp? 🙏

I have a blog that goes into more detail here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Thanx alot Jason. But i have no sound after the Fxloop chain. I have a Bugera 333, i made everything as you showed, i mean cables ecc. The sound improved as hell, i mean distortion added to Bugera's gain. But the modulation is off. Any suggestions mate?
I put the Fxloop at the end, after the delay. And it works.
In your case, I think I would just use the POD Go through the effects loop of the amp if that’s an option
The 2nd and possibly easier option would be to just run the POD Go directly through the amp’s input on the clean channel
@@larrycavallucci3258 one more thing…I bought an acoustic preset from Worship Tutorials. Sounds really good!!
Hey how come you can't use the evh channel footswitch ? I tried to 4 cable method and the footswitch for the evh does nothing
I never tried using it with the EVH footswitch but that's odd as you should be able to use both. Those are completely separate.
Yea... that's what I thought.
How would you connect the Pod Go to a vintage Fender that doesn't have an fx loop?
I think you’re just stuck plugging it into the input which doesn’t help with the time-based effects
Thank you for your tutorial!!
🙏🤘
Hi Jason, thanks so much for this video and your blog. Quick question regarding just using the Pod Go for modulation/delay effects into my 5150 effects loop (2 cable method). I see that you need to turn the effects loop on in the Pod Go, does it matter where you put the effects you want to use? Should they be after the loop on the screen? Thanks again for your detailed videos. They really help this old school guy out! 🙂
You're welcome! Yes, I believe you'd want those effects after the POD amp/cabinet
So, by connecting this way the eq on the amp is still operational?
Yep the amp is operational to its full extent.
What about the settings on the amp? Is it on the clean channel?
It depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re using the amps in the POD Go, run it through the clean channel of the amp and adjust the eq how you want.
If I were to use this live, I’d want to just use the effects of the POD Go through the effects loop of the amp. A good amp is going to sound way better than the POD Go if you’re playing metal
Do you need to have the loop on all the time? I have a Marshall dsl
You can turn the effects on and off as needed. Even better, you may just want to run it through your effects loop instead of using the 4 cable method. I have a write-up here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
can it be plugged into Fender Deluxe Reverb (which doesnt have an effects loop)?
You don't necessarily need an effects loop but for time-based effects, it sounds better through an effects loop
Thanks for examplaining all this 🙂
I have one question though. Where is the technical difference between this 4 (3) cable method and simply going via amp out? I mean, if one turns off the amp and cab on the Pod and then goes via the amp out into the front of the Amp, where would be the difference?
Serious question btw, im not doubting the sense or something. I just want to learn ^^
Oh also, what cables did you use for this? instrument or patch cables.
There's 4 and 2 and I have a post explaining more here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Thank you Jason, ive meant the third method though 🙂
If you look at the Pods back, there is an "Amp Out".
Yeah, dude, that limitation kinda sucks. I'd also like to have 2 ODs in front of the amp for some tones, which you can't have.
Highly recommend doing this, there are plenty of videos on it
Do you use it for IRs with your acoustic guitar?
No, I have the amp and cab bypassed and just using compression and effects (look up acoustic patches on Worship Tutorials)
@@jasonstallworth Thanks for the answer.
Thank you...yeah, those distortion pedals or even an overdrive will help tremendously giving you the gain you need for solos!
I fucking love Blackstar amps. The cleanest dirty overdrives
If that makes sense lol
If you guys haven't heard about how to jail break patches you are missing out. You can remove any blocks except for the amp and cab. It still has a dsp limit but you can get away with quite a decent amount at one time. Line 6 has no plans to stop this from being possible so I doubt it is handful to the unit. I have had ZERO problems and it makes it way more versatile. You can jailbreak 1 patch at a time and keep the other patches "stock"
Thanks for sharing this...I didn't know about that
Thank you my friend . I was looking for longtime how to do it . You're the besr
Glad this helped! Yeah, I when I first tried connecting it, I had it all wrong and it took me a little while to figure it out!
is the pod go able to switch channels on the amp ./. to replace the amps foot switch?
That would be a cool function! But you need the EVH footswitch for that.
Thanks dude🤙..
Here's the latest: th-cam.com/video/7FIoBfpTS7M/w-d-xo.html
quick question, what cables should be mono and what cables should be stereo for this method? thanks
I don't think there's any different...just plain instrument cables will work for both
This is very awesome for 4 cables. Can we use this method but still switch between real amp and Line 6 amp?
Dude, I'm not really sure but there are pedals you can use to switch between amps
@@jasonstallworth sure you can. Select your amp/preamp block and then hold down the footswitch that controls the fx loop. Pod go will ask to assign this footswitch to the amp block, click yes. This way you can switch between your amps preamp and the selected line6 preamp with one footswitch.
Have you tried using some of the Pod Go amps (cabs off) through the power section of the EVH 50 and 2x12 cab?
I haven’t tried that yet
@@jasonstallworth Give it a shot, I think you will like it. Sent the Pod right into the EVH loop return.
I have a digitech drop, where should I put it in chain?
I've never used one of those but it seems that would go in front of the amp
Dude! Great tutorial! Steve Vai actually uses his Axe Fx ONLY for Effects just like this. Lets the amp show its stuff. I might need a POD Go
The POD Go effects are pretty solid!
@@jasonstallworth I had an HX stomp and shouldnt have sold it. Im a Tube BUFF but those amps sounded IDENTICAL to my amps!
@@jasonstallworth that’s great options and thinking out side box
Isn't there a noise gate at the front of this chain that doesn't require you to waste an effects block on a noise gate pedal?
I believe the only noise gate the effect that you have to use but I could be wrong
@@jasonstallworth @Ken Wheeler is correct. In the software, if you click on the "Input" block you can turn the gate on or off as well as set the threshold and delay. This is shown on page 13 of the owners manual.
@@jedisb Thank you, good stuff to know!
great video, I found out if you use the amp out instead of the line out your amp will have its full tone, the line out seems to take away and darken the tone, give it a try.
🙏🏻🤘
I imagine it sounds great with that Deville!
I was impressed I’ve tried playing the pod go through a lot of different platforms PA systems powered speaker systems and a host of different amps plugged into only the effects loop return of the amp this four cable method is the cats meow if you don’t need stereo
As you said it does sound great through my Deville and equally as good through my katana artist I will never hook the pod go up to an amp with a single cable again
Every effect i put infront of the Mono FX block WORKS.
Every effect ( tried all reverbs and delays) i put after the Mono FX block Dont affect the sound at all.
I have a blog post that goes into more detail of the setup. See if this helps you: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
Unfortunately, doesn't work. I tried everything.
Do I need stereo jacks for this?
You shouldn't. I cover everything you need in the video
Golden....thanks for the step by step tutorial.....!
You're welcome! I also have this in a blog post with a little more detail: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/

ok...I checked out your blog post and it is double golden! Complete and easy to understand complete with step by step illustrations/photos.......can't thank you enough. Will keep a shortcut on my desktop to this post.
@@gritsguitar dude, so glad to hear that helped! I’ve got another blog (and videos) coming soon on my POD Go tones that I see for my live gigs
Very Clear and helpful. Thanks from a new user. What are your thoughts on sending the pod go at line level into the effects return of the amp?
You could definitely just run the POD Go through the effects loop so use delays, reverbs, etc. Actually, if I were going to use this live, that's what I'd do because I like the noise gate pedal (MXR Smartgate) more than the POD Go ng. And the EVH doesn't need an od pedal.
You should also be able to assign whatever effects you want to 4 effects blocks and move them before your amp or after.
Thank you, that’s good to know!
Thank you man!
🤘
Is it necessary to use a computer to edit your signal chain? Can I do everything you did with the pod go itself? Because I cannot get mine to work doing what you’ve done. I even have a 5150… 🤷🏼♂️
So are these tones coming from the pod go or the amp? If I wanted to use the pod go essentially as an effects pedal but use the amp and the heart how would I hook that up?
You can edit on the POD Go, you don't have to use your computer. I just found it a little easier.
I bypassed the POD Go amp/cab and set it up to use only the effects. I kinda look at it as replacing your effects pedal board and being able to route effects before the amp, such as an OD, and using some effects through the effects loop, like delay and reverb.
I also have a blog post that goes into more detail (as well as the 2-cable method): www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
hi. why i'm loosing sound on when using pod go to my DAW. please advise it's so frustrating thanks!
Are you plugging the POD Go into your interface or using your POD Go as an interface going directly to your computer?
I’d the latter, it’s probably just a setup in your DAW that you’ll beee to change to assign the POD Go as your input source.
Love what you do and thank you for the help through your videos
🙏🤘
Can this method work with the Line 6 Helix?
I've never used the Helix but this should be the same across all Line 6 products
I made the same mistake lol and it was f’n loud lol so thank you for your lesson/tips!
This was definitely a learning experience
Can the pod change the channel on the amp?
I don't believe that's an option
thank you this helped so much
Happy to hear that! I have a blog post that goes into more detail (including the 2 cable method) here: www.jasonstallworth.com/connect-pod-go-to-amp/
@@jasonstallworth that’s what I thought but for some reason with my orange amp head this does not happen , cheers I’ll check out the blog page
You wouldn’t have any ideas why my amp will not do it ??
Hi, sorry if this is a bit unrelated, but as I understand it the Pod Go has only four free effects blocks - would that be enough, in your opinion, specifically for someone who is new to and learning about guitar effects.
I wouldn't recommend the POD Go if more effects and experimenting with those is what you want. You'd be better off going with something like the Helix.
@@jasonstallworth Oh well that is way outside my budget. You have any views on the Boss GT1? And thanks for replying!
@@accentontheoff never played through that. Your best bet might be working more with plugins. Those are a lot less money and more effects
@@jasonstallworth Sure, yes, thanks.
I've also started using the
MAIN OUTPUTS and the AMP OUT simultaneously (like in the first diagram of the quick start manual) sending a cab emulated signal direct to the PA and and non cab emulated signal to the front of my real amp... of course making sure that in Global Settings the Amp Out Source is set to Pre Cab/IR (if it's set to Main Out, the real amp sounds shit!) The only sort of bad thing I find doing this is that the volume of the signal sent to the front of the amp is really really loud, do you know if there's a way to reduce the signal output of the AMP OUT on the Podgo!? Many thanks again, really enjoyed your video and playing! :)
Dude, I honestly never use this method (4-cable) but just wanted to demonstrate of how connect everything as I was curious.
The only thing I use the POD Go for on a regular basis is my live solo gigs and for those I'm playing mostly acoustic and a little electric here and there (I like to loop a rhythm and solo over it...that spices up the gigs and the crowd seems to enjoy that!)
I am going to test using the POD Go with my amp but only through the effects loop.
You should go from the amp out of pod go, to the Return of your physical power amp. That should make it
Hi Jason, Love your work mate.
Thank you
Yeah man, I may be doing that in a couple of weeks!
Hi! I'm looking for info on this but all videos showing how to do the 4c method do not explain how to bypass the amps preamp and use the modelling in the pod go. How do you set up the podgo to be able to switch between preamp modelling and the actual preamp with the 4cm?
@@bbu33 See snapshots.
@@MartinCraneRockbeast what do you mean?
@@bbu33 With snapshots you can turn effects, amps, loops to which ever state you wish them to be in. As in turn off the pre amp in the loop and turn on the pods preamp at the same time. Not the cab. In order to bypass your amps pre-amp and bring in one of the pedals pre-amps to replace it. Used to be able to do it with the Pod HD500X. Under 4 cable method your amps preamp is in the loop.
