I am going to start this feature by inventing a term…”ro-rom-com”. It’s my name for a ‘rock and roll romantic comedy.’That is how I would describe the origin story of the song “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. The tale began to simmer backstage at a Eurythmics concert at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in 1983.
Eurythmics were white hot- fresh off one of the most captivating hits of the year with “Sweet Dreams (are made of this)” that was a huge international smash.
The show was packed with celebrities, and music industry dignitaries that were curious to see the exciting duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. After the concert, the backstage area was a scene of who’s who in Hollywood in the early 80s.
One of the stars hanging out backstage was Stevie Nicks.
Stevie was standing in the dressing room doorway, and immediately caught the eyes of Dave Stewart.
Dave remembered Stevie wearing a faux (rhymes with low) fur coat, that reminded him of the first time he met Annie Lennox.
Surprisingly, Dave did not know who she was, but he was immediately smitten by her intriguing beauty, and her long flowing hair. When Stevie recounted meeting Dave for the first time at that backstage encounter, she recalled Dave looking at her straight in the eye and saying “I want to be your boyfriend.”
Unbeknownst to Dave, Stevie had just split with her boyfriend, Joe Walsh, the day before. Apparently, Stevie & Joe had a huge fight and broke up.
Stevie invited Dave to go back to her house for a party, and a few moments later, Dave was in the back of a limo with Stevie and her back-up singers on their way to Stevie’s house. Dave didn’t even have a chance to change out of his sweaty stage clothes before they left for Stevie’s place.
When Dave & Stevie and her friends got to Stevie’s house, Dave wandered from room to room, while Stevie and her friends disappeared into a bathroom to indulge on some substance. After what seemed like hours passing, Dave grew tired, and having no idea what part of LA he was in, or what hotel he & Annie and the band were staying in, he fell asleep in one of the bedrooms around 3 am. Are you with me so far??? Dave was awakened by the sounds of rustling doors and closets, around 5am, only to find Stevie in the room where he had been sleeping, trying on Victorian styled clothing, and then the two rock stars had a romantic tryst.

Couldn't agree more about Petty. He was a treasure, and will be missed forever. I'm a much bigger fan of his 70s material, but even this song still evokes good memories for me, where most 80s music does the opposite. Petty has always been a favorite, and his music will live forever.

Here’s another to add to the legend…in the mid 80’s we had a great Album Oriented Rock station in the Raleigh area WRDU 106.1….they were the first station (that I heard) that had a morning talk show type format that had a mixture of stories like this, music, and funny stuff. One of the stories the female DJ related was an interview she did w Nicks at a station in Cincinnati. Stevie comes in to do the show and then disappears w her strap hangers. The DJ is waiting as they were doing this live. Stevie is taking forever, so someone goes and tries to find her. As the person walks in there is Stevie, dress hiked over her rear end, one of the assistants w a straw, blowing cocaine up her arse! Rock&Roll Baby! This was relayed over the air on the morning drive! I was in tears. I tend to believe it, especially after hearing other stories about her.

As I recall, a “revenge of Alice” sequel video was made for Southern Accents track “Make It Better (Forget About Me)”, in which Alice tortures the Hatter. Walsh must have “come around there some more,” because he worked with Stevie on his 1985 album, The Confessor. And Stevie herself took a turn with the Alice thematics when she put out The Other Side of the Mirror, in 1987.

Best concert I ever went to was Tom Petty.....around the year 2000 if I recall. being in my 30's at the time, I thought I would be one of the youngest fans there. Man was I wrong. In fact, I kinda felt old! It was amazing to me how diverse the audience was, including many fans who appeared to be in their teens. At first, I thought maybe these were teenagers who came with their parents. It didn't take long to realize they were there because they loved petty! They knew all the songs, and sang along with the same enthusiasm as us guys in our 30's, and a lot of people in their 60's and 70's too. Point is, Petty is timeless. I enjoyed the show so much, I booked to see him again two weeks later. Then again two weeks after that. That's the only act I ever saw more than once in the same year. It was magical!

I had remembered hearing there was some drama involved. I didn't realize it was Stevie Nicks who coined the line. The whole melodrama that played out is both humorous and disheartening. It's hard to imagine the song as anything other than Tom Petty, but some form of collaboration with Nicks on it would have been interesting. There is a wonder at how connected artists are, but it is often easy to forget they are human, as well. Stories like this remind us that jealousy, ambition, and dislike are all stopped up inside them along with all the talent, passion, and skill.
Thank you for the story. Keep doing what you do, Prof.

And, interestingly and serendipitously enough: Stevie Nicks' 4th solo album, The Other Side Of The Mirror (1989), was inspired by this song and period in the lives of all concerned. Though, supposedly, Stevie and Joe were involved from Summer 1983 to Spring 1985 (w/ Stevie firing Jimmy in late 1984). Also, serendipitous: When Stevie's 3rd solo LP, Rock A Little, was released, in Fall 1985, Stevie decided to personally give Joe Walsh an acetate recording of the album that was partly-inspired/musically-fueled by their relationship...upon telling her constant backing duo/Friends, Lori and Sharon, of her plan to drive through Los Angeles to visit her failed suitor, Sharon looked doubtfully at Stevie, and said: "Isn't that a long way to go, to say goodbye? I thought you already did that?"...which led to the rocker song/single, also from TOSOTM: "Long Way To Go", and the famous chorus:
"Well, it's a real long way to go, to say goodbye,
I thought we already did that?,
    Have fun...tell the world..."
P.S. When Stevie handed Joe the acetate, it was outside his home, and he just took it rather nonchalantly. Stevie turned, left, and as she walked back to her car, looked back and said, "Well, have fun...tell the world..."
I'm STILL surprised that "Long Way To Go" and the semi-title track, "Alice" weren't giant radio and commercial '80s hits.
    Great story, Adam...as always.

Much of todays “music” is only about fame. Not many True stars in the music world. Sad. Thank you for giving us this story….. as fantastical as Alice in Wonderland itself. Art imitates life eh? 😎

Tom Petty is my brother-in-law’s favourite performer. He saw him many times and now has hired a Tom Petty tribute band twice over two summers at his cottage. Covid has put a damper on it but when that’s over he’ll have it again. I remember listening to this song as a teenager; great memories. Fantastic storytelling. You have a new subscriber. I love music from the ‘80s.

Huge fan of Tom Petty's music. I think he's one of the most under-appreciated rockers of the 80s and 90s. The three music videos I can remember clearly from when I was younger are 1) the Dire Straits music video with the occasional dips into animation, 2) Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love" mini-movie, and Tom Petty's Alice in Wonderland Video--didn't realize there had been a version where he swallows the girl though! Good stuff--thanks for another great video!

I wanted to also add my story behind one of my original songs inspired by the great TOM PETTY🥰 About 11 yrs ago, I was listening to his song either it was “Running down a dream” or “I won’t back down” I can’t remember which one.. I felt somehow lead to write a Petty styled rock song.. I came up with an opening chord progression of the verse part using the guitar chords E, D, A, AsusA. before I wrote the lyrics.. a couple months later I collaborated with my bandmember Grafton Tanner, and together we came up with rest of the song. We titled it “The Long Road” my song. A year after we composed it we tracked it at a local studio.. in Macon Ga. released it in 2014, as a single release to iTunes etc.. but if you listen to my song T.L.R. You can hear that classic Tom Petty style to it.. I can lastly add that I have my very own ode to the legend himself Mr. Tom Petty..

Idk if a physical relationship but I'd be surprised if they didnt have one knowing both of them. Dave stepped in the deep end and never even knew it lol

This eas different & i didnt know for sure but thought Sitar was used on here! Im familiar with as im a huge fan of George Harrison & first hearing it on the Beatles because of George!! Soap operas & movies cant ever capture true life Soap Operas! Stevies life is that!! I dont judge her! She is a strong independent woman who has really lived her way & not many in this world do! I respect her for her challenges she has overcome & for being her own woman! I would love to hear more on Tom & the inspirations for his songs. Also more on Stevie, George Harrison!! Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are much underrated! They stayed together the good bad & the ugly which few have achieved! Tom supported the HB’s & the HB’s supportered Tom!! Thats how it was & what helped in their success for a lifetime!! Adam what makes you so awesome is you keep all these Artist alive even with the ones tragically lost like Tom Petty!! Im proud of you & thank God you share your incredible knowledge with the world!! Hey i also love when you tell about you & your dad!! Those memories are priceless arent they?!! Tom repeatedly denied having a sexual relationship with Stevie and I have no reason to doubt him as in his authorized bio (Warren Zane) he was totally candid about everything else. But they were lifelong friends. She was sleeping with Iovine while Tom was writing for her and Iovine was producing the Heartbreakers and she used to hide in Iovine's bedroom by her own admission to eavesdrop on their conversations about the album Tom was making -- stuff like that did happen. She also tried to dissuade him from getting together with Dana his second wife who pretty much saved his life, but I'm sure it was coming from a good place as she was sober by then.

    • @EvelynBaron
      @EvelynBaron 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Dave says it and everybody seems to repeat it and it's true he had the 1st lynch pin line and a partial demo for Stevie, whom Petty was trying to get rid of since his own writing commitments for Southern Accents were overwhelming, and he was more than happy that Stewart write for her (Source: Tom Petty bio by Warren Zane) but Petty wasn't just singing on the track he was writing lyrics too so collaboration ok, but I suspect ol' Dave was taking a bit too much credit. Also in the Rock Doc Runnin Down a Dream Stan Lynch makes it very clear that the presence of Dave Stewart and Stevie's entourage during that time was not the Heartbreakers' style, the drugs were seriously messing with everybody's heads and they couldn't get rid of the people. But yes, awesome song and the video was great.

In 1985 I had just started working at a studio in the LA suburbs that was owned by the Captain. and Tennille called Rhumbo Recorders. It was very popular for many reasons, but I think the main one was artists could hide there away from Hollywood. My first day at the studio, Huey Lewis asked me where the Bruce Hornsby session was. I know these are all old names but it was a longtime ago, kids. The first two bands to lock out the rooms for months were REO Speedwagon and Fleetwood Mac. This is what happened.
Fleetwood Mac was there to write and record the songs that would eventually become the album Tango in the Night. They were there for 8 months, and Stevie was only there for 3 days in the 7th month. Why was she absent? She was following Tom and. the Heartbreakers playing behind Bob Dylan on a tour thru Asia.
A wonderful engineer, Don Smith, would book time to mix live tracks from the Dylan/Heartbreakers shows, flying. in and out in a couple. days. He always had a story to share with the Mac about Stevie, and share a laugh.
All of a sudden, the word was Stevie was going to come in in a few days. It was a big deal..the members of FM were getting in fights (John McVie asked me to put a band together with him" You play guitar, right Young Will?" Gulp. Lindsey's right there, John)
    Finally it was the day.
Turned out that Stevie was wearing out her welcome on the Dylan tour and Bob told Tom to get rid of her. She wouldn't go. She just would not leave,. She kept showing up in every city. But in Australia, they found out she was on a tourist vis and was not allowed to work, ie appear on stage. So , the very next show, they invited her up for the encores, then dropped a dime and the authorities kicked her out.
So she was finally coming to the studio. But guess who booked the other room? Yep. Don Smith, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan to listen to the tracks they'd done in Australia. The didnt know Stevie was going to be there..
I had to tell them. The looks on their faces said it all..just defeated and pissed that she still haunted them...
Don then asked me if I could lock them in the studio so no one could wander in and find out they were there.
So I did. And no one knew. Then not much later, this song comes out....So this song was written by 3 guys who all slept with Stevie and were done with her. Don't come around here.no more..... Exactly. Swear to God, True story.

The video stood out more than anything to me. Loved it. Considering how long it's been, I honestly forgot what song of Petty's it was and could never remember. I simply remember the Alice in Wonderland themed video and now, thanks to you, I remember the song it went with. I did remember how psychedelic it was and this video forever ingrained heavy drug and alcohol use in association with Tom Petty for me. In fact, a lot of his following songs were about drug use and the effects of it.
