    I have just used my 30+ year old torque wrench for the first time in anger,I bought it and didn't bother with it.Great explanation here enjoyed the video.

    I have one of these that's well over 30 years old. Now I just use it on my lug nuts. I have a digital click types for other torques but when I only had the beam wrench, I used it for everything. They are long lasting.

    I’ve got that same model hanging in my garage right now. Still use it from time to time.

    Not only was the accuracy pretty good, but the consistency was fantastic! If you're torquing down a valve cover where consistency means the difference between sealing and leaking, this is definitely the wrench you want to use.

    Very impressive.
    I went threw all icon t.w , both Quinn t.w ,
    All Pittsburgh t.w , and four Carlyle t.w ,
    And just had a snap on 15-300 ATECH.
    Now i have a blue oreillys t.w and a 0-150 deflecting beam t.w from them too. I know these last two t.w fit my style
    . just getting better at being informed and who makes and own tool brands.
    Non-stigma tools and made in Taiwan works for me.

    I use this exact torque wrench. I don’t rebuild engines so this works fine for me. Many of the videos where they properly test torque wrenches show more modern wrenches being much less accurate.

      is this type of torque wrench bad for rebuilding engine?

    Thank you so much for the sharing. I can't imagine it is still very accurate after 30 years.

      Why not?

  • @steran50

    That's a Beam torque wrench or a Pointer torque wrench that your testing not a deflecting beam torque wrench. Look up Warren and Brown deflecting beam torque wrench and you will see the difference.

    I think you tested your digital scale instead of the wrench.

    To avoid "gravity error" - install your wrench horizontally, so you can pull sideways rather than up and down ;)
    Also you must make sure that you are maintaining 90* angle between your scale and the beam. Beam moves and angle changes!
    Best setup so far is to have breaker bar with scale fixed to the table and use a link-nut to attach torque wrench. Then use the torque wrench by hand to apply (horizontally) desired force. Then read the scale ;) This way breaker bar - pull scale angle to fixed. And torque wrench is used in "natural way".
    good luck
    ;)

    • @Yousitech
      @Yousitech ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sure the gravity error is there but at this level of accuracy I’m quite sure it’ll be close enough for anything regular ppl are likely to use it on

      @@Yousitech Yeap! Considering maintenance, this tool is way more reliable than any other mechanical device. The only disadvantage is lack of visibility. But this can be easily fixed with small LED, battery and contact switch. Great tool! However for tiny projects like hobby gas turbines or for something large like wheel hub nut I tent to use pull scale with a breaker bar ;)

    If it is so critical that the angle of the rope to the handle be perpendicular, you are failing to account for that angle changing as the wrench is depressed, which would offset your claim of inaccuracy.

      Good point, and in fact this makes the torque wrench even more accurate. We can see that it is under-reading by approximately 2% to 4% in this video. So decomposing the non-perpendicular applied force into its perpendicular and tangential vectors with a visual eyeballing of 15 degrees, using cosine15deg the actual perpendicular force applied is 96.6% of the measured reading. Hence it will under-read and is pretty close to being spot-on if we factor that in (assuming accurate digital luggage scale).

    I don't understand the purpose of the "torque calculation". Why is averaging the readings not enough?

    • @HacksbyDad
      @HacksbyDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for the question.
      The straight pound readings from the scale would have been okay if the distance from the wrench head to the handle pivot point had been 12". The distance was 13-5/8" so I had to convert to ft-lbs. Hope that helps.
