    Its a good idea with bias cut skirts to hang it and maybe place binder clips on the bottom edge of skirt because the fibres will stretch. If you don't do this process your skirt is likely to stretch on its hanger in your closet and end up longer than you expected. It usually takes a week to let the bias drop - you can put it on a hanger or a mannequin during this time.

  • @belldrinker9375

    Hi! I still don't quite understand the cutting on the bias part. So if you cut on an 45-degree angle, shouldn't it make the final result to be something like a trapezium rather than a rectangle like what you said in the video? I'm a bit confused, can you explain more?

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, it still ends up being a rectangle. It's just if you were using a pattern and had a rectangle piece of paper with those dimensions cut out instead of laying that piece of paper inline with the edges (with the grain) you angle the cut out area to be on a 45 degree angle so it helps the fabric drape a different way. So maybe it might even be easier to do that first. Find something large enough (or join a few pieces of paper together to allow enough space) that you can cut out your measured cutting length and width then lay that on the angle on your fabric. Hope that helps!!

  • @rocksvanen
    @rocksvanen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You would get better results if you use a standart bodice pattern: draw a straight line from the waist or armhole (if wanting a slip dress) to the wished length of your slip skirt/dress, make a new pattern from that. Also using washable wonder tape to the seams helps the fabric from getting wrinkly ☺️❤️❤️

    Hello can you explain me how you make the rectangle? I didn't understand that part :/

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To find the rectangle measurements, you find the ideal length you want it to be as one side and the full circumference of your butt (plus seam allowance) for the other side.
      Then once you have measured out a rectangle on the bias (by turning the material 45 degrees) just cut from there.
      There's a link in the description to the blog post version of the tutorial which might help it make sense more reading it there?

    Can you use a zipper instead of a elastic band??

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course! I've had someone do that before, but they did also come back and say that with the silky material it was such a pain to sew. I just find that the elastic is a great intro to share then people can evolve as they wish :)
      Just means if you use a zip you can taper it in at the waist rather then having the excess for it to be able to stretch and slip over your hip/but area.

  • @GraceE1111
    @GraceE1111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If I wanted to do this with a zip or button closure instead of an elastic waist band what would you suggest for adjusting measurements at the top of the skirt?

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It means you'd be able to take in the waist area to actually curve and hug your body shape rather than being the width of the hips and letting the elastic bring it in.
      So just making sure that you make the top part the size of your waist and that it flows outwards from there to allow for your hips. Hope that helps :)

    How do you know exactly how much fabric to buy before hand?

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank youuu! That's so kind :)
      For this all you'll need to do is measure your widest point (whether that's your hips or but) and times that by 1.25 and that should be plenty enough if you get fabric off the roll. Most of my tutorials I try provided suggested amounts in the description or blogpost! Hope that helps x

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can't get silk then a satin/blend can be a good alternative. Otherwise anything that's nice a drape-y feel but has a silk look to it. Sometimes polyester blends can give this effect. If you can't find anything like this in your local suppliers maybe best to have a look online and see if you can get sample orders first to double check it's what you want :)

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I only just saw this question! There's no problem with making this out of two pieces of fabric. Just means you'll have a second seam line and might just need to adjust the placement of it so you can wear the split at the front leg. The only reason I did it as one piece was so it had just one seam and I could adjust where that sits whenever I want. Hope that helps!

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey lovely! It's a bit hard to know without seeing it and knowing what you did throughout it. But if this is to do with the bottom hem section this could be because of the material being cut on a bias and there for it sometimes bunches up when we go to sew it. Sometimes letting the fabric rest/settle for a bit helps otherwise ironing before your sew so that it stays in place can help also. x

    Hi! could you let me know how do you cut on a bias?

    • @TheEssentialsClub
      @TheEssentialsClub  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Of course. Cutting on the bias essentially means instead of cutting/measuring parallel with the regular straight angles or grain of the fabric instead measure/cut 45 degrees and cut on an angle so that the fabric drapes differently. If that doesn't make sense maybe search for some other videos or blogposts that specifically talk over this :) Hopefully something I can get around to explaining deeper in another video one day!
