    What do you think? Any ideas why DQ is so big in Japan?

      I'd really like for you to ask Misato about the Nintendo Switch -- since DQ11 is coming to it and she mentioned how pretty the PS4 port looks, but that she doesn't have a lot of time to play at home.

    • @FPP-OG
      @FPP-OG 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you like the beautiful graphics on the PS4, but also like playing portably, you should get the switch version once it comes out. You can also transfer your save from PS4 -> 3ds or 3ds -> PS4 so you could be playing on PS4 at home with beautiful graphics and then put your save onto 3ds and play outside the house. The same should go for the switch version.

      An honest review, i loved that part when Misato talked about graphic superiority of PS4, yet she choose to buy 3DS version for reasonable circumstances. Did Misato also play DQ VII and DQ VIII in 3DS. I think its really interesting if Misato can share some personal experiences with those games :) keep up the good podcast, LP Jap.

    Because it's a fantastic, iconic series. The better question would be, why does anyone *not* like Dragon Quest?

    • @WilliamHungVEVO
      @WilliamHungVEVO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      It's just not marketed well enough here in the west, plus it doesn't fit western tastes as well as Final Fantasy, which is more edgy and cool/stylized. Us Americans love being edgy lol. We're also pretty intolerant when it comes to niche media that are cutesy, happy, sexual, and/or contain anime characters, just muttering a word about it will garner the attention of a lot of haters who make blind judgements about games they've never played simply for falling into the above categories. There's also the sentiment of "If you're American, buy American" that bars people from enjoying much else, for those that can't think for themselves at least or people too caught up on fitting societal molds/fixated on public image.

    • @ArcadianGenesis
      @ArcadianGenesis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      TYRONEYUNASTY Yeah, I was aware of all those generalizations, but as you implied, they aren't very rational (for those who fit the generalization). I'm American, but my taste is not very prototypical American. However, the idea of "buying American" especially doesn't explain it, because as you noted, Americans love Final Fantasy, which is also not American (even though more find it appealing for the reasons you listed).

    • @WilliamHungVEVO
      @WilliamHungVEVO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ArcadianGenesis I guess I wasn't clear. The reason why ff works is because there are qualities that are appealing to Americans, the same reason why Cowboy Bebop is more popular here than something like Blackjack. I'm not saying that they strictly buy things that are American, rather Americans generally only buy what has become an acceptable norm and is well known, in this instance, final fantasy. I was simply stating the many possible reasons as to why DQ isn't as popular here, "buying American" being one of them, and I know I'm working with blanket statements here, but there is basis in reality. To clarify, I was speaking of the American consumer base as a whole when it comes to games. To rephrase it, many Americans don't play JRPGs because it doesn't contain qualities that are appealing to Americans, since most are drawn to shooters or the fact that it's not American in the first place, the few that do play ff games are drawn to it either because many American shows have marketed it back in the day, contains qualities that appeal to them, or because they like to play what's popular, totally respectable, among the few that were exposed to ff, there exists even smaller groups of serious JRPG fans who play other JRPGs, and even smaller for the lesser known titles that aren't well marketed, if at all. I too don't fit the bill as a typical American given my tastes, but it doesn't change the fact that most Americans are unwilling to play niche games given the sales numbers.

    • @ArcadianGenesis
      @ArcadianGenesis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      TYRONEYUNASTY You were perfectly clear. I'm happy to not have a typical American taste, and good for you for not having one either.

      Yeah, if you have the money, I say get both. If you grew up with the series, the appeal of the 3DS version is the old-school graphics. If you don't care about that though and modern graphics are more important to you than portability, go with the PS4 one. They share the same story, but they're virtually different games in the sense that the offer entirely different experiences. I might end up getting both as well.

    I think she means the Hero's journey rather than superman style story. She makes a good point that people like DQ because it's quite simple and they don't have to learn a lot of new things, even Final Fantasy games change far more dramatically between titles than the DQ games do. So an older gamer can pick up the new DQ and it will be easy for them to get into - familiar faces, places, spells, items, systems etc.

      You might not know this Drewsefer89, but it is not actually Nintendo that makes Dragon Quest. In video game consoles, it is common for other companies "called third parties" to create games to put them on whatever consoles they decide to. Dragon Quest is made by one of these "third parties" called "Square Enix," and they decided to first bring the game to 3DS and PS4 before bringing a version of it to Switch.
      Hope I have been informative, I know the videogame industry can be confusing for non-gamers.

      Another thing is Switch version of MHXX, it looks better than any HD version and it does only calls Switch version which makes me believe this is the graphical style the Cross team will go with for their next Switch title.

      Smash Bros. = Suma Bura
      Pocket Monsters = Pokemon
      Final Fantasy = Efu Efu or Fai Fan
      And the kicker...
      Street Fighter = ...Suto

      It’s mostly because some of the blended consonant sounds we have in English for these titles are hard to say in Japanese. It’s easier to abbreviate them.

    if you live in Japan chances are you'll find it better to buy the 3ds version since you probably don't have the time to sit in front of your ps4 to play the game. seeing how much time I was spending in the subway or on campus that would have been my first choice.

    • @Hawlo
      @Hawlo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      See, I thought the same, but I think the PS4 version is outselling the 3DS one.

      You are wrong, Hawelo, 3DS is outselling PS4....

    • @amuro9624
      @amuro9624 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea I know, I remembered that after writing this comment but still I would have buy the 3ds version if I was still in japan. maybe it's such a big deal that people actually take the time to play it on ps4 or maybe the hardcore games are heavily buying it on ps4 while the casual are buying it on 3ds

    • @ScionOfTheSeventhDawn
      @ScionOfTheSeventhDawn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not about casuals or hardcore (*both* consoles have a high casual install base), it is as the girl said, the Japanese just spend too much time outside just waiting in a subway or anything like that, that's why 3DS and mobile gaming are such a huge thing to them, they don't have the time to play home consoles anymore....

    The best version right now is the Western PC version, not only does it have voice acting and better difficulty options, as well as the dash feature, on the PC Steam release, you can mod the game. Someone actually modded in the orchestrated version of the soundtrack and it sounds so much better. Now if the composer can just retire, that would be great.

    I'm gonna buy both the PS4 and 3DS version. Play it in both glorious 3D and then in 2D on the 3DS. That is, if the games ever come out. Months after release and we haven't heard a single thing from SquareEnix. If this was Final Fantasy XV, we'd be having weekly video updates online, daily twitter reminders and billboard ads all over. But for Dragon Quest, they don't even mention it for 6 months. It's like they are trying to make the game fail in the west.

    Both ps4 and 3ds are the same but the difference is 3ds has chibi characters, small screen and small open world. For ps4 has big open world, best graphics and big screen

    I can't wait for it but it is a shame that in the west the music will change to a non orchestral format for some reason. MIDI I think it is called not sure... It has something to do with the developer and his issues with the west I read.

    • @jackmahoney7481
      @jackmahoney7481 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but the japanese version of this particular DQ game has a MIDI soundtrack so there's no real loss for us (in this instance)
      And normally if we don't get it it's because Sugiyama (the composer) is pretty strict about the use of his music, and xenophobic to boot

      people add honorifics to some characters like how we give nicknames.
      For example, Shinji from Evangelion 2.0 is referred to as Shinji-san. Because of the ending.

      stae1234 but there's a reason behind certain honorifics and i think OP meant to ask why "-sama" and not "Sephiroth-san"?
