For anyone concerned about Lotm read this: As the translator for Cuttlefish's author notes and volumes summaries in the discord, I was personally there when Cuttlefish ranted about every part that he had to censor/alter. All in all, there were only TWO parts in the entire novel that he had to change in the Chinese version (not the English version) The first is the cultist incident on the train, where all the passengers got turned into puppets and showed Klein the "eight teeth" creepy smile simultanously. That part was removed in Chinese version for it being reported as "advocating terrorism". the other known part that was censored, was Klein's encounter with a Demoness, where he basically nutted himself. The description of his physical reaction was removed in the Chinese version. And that's about all the censorships that were done, to my knowledge at least. If there are more that I missed, feel free to add to them! PS: As some have pointed out, if you are reading the English version of LOTM, no worry about censorship.

Honestly it just sounds like he was scapegoated by the CCP *because* of the content of his work. The CCP is notoriously very conservative and controlling of the media that gets distributed within mainland China -- and they don't want to damage their own image by being the ones to public enact these policies. Browbeating respected industry figureheads into becoming scapegoats for unpopular decisions is a common tactic for them and that honestly sounds far more likely than him pulling a 180 with a change of character and turning the CCP against something that the CCP almost certainly wanted to clamp down on already. If that's what happened to him I just feel bad for having that happen to him. EDIT: Worth mentioning that even in the reddit post you linked the vast majority of comments also believe this is what actually happened.

The ability of people to have a VPN is not so simple. There's no way to advertise it except in person to person conversations, and alluding to content that 'doesn't exist' can get you pulled into interrogation rooms very quickly, even for minor infractions. pron is the usual gateway, because it exposes both parties, a necessary trust mechanic in china, i.e. making both parties muddy, complicit protects you from being snitched on. Shunning is common, as there's often people who get paid to 'big brother' snitch on people in public, but also party loyalists and retired maoists are common who will report family members, children, etc. There's also often the illusion of free speech. Where people can complain about problems ... for a while. And then it just disappears. Which is why a lot of serious topics get started around 11pm to 6am, when the police are asleep, literally. Public complaints, accidents at work, people who died in accidents 'leak out' because the police hide all of these posts, and so do officials. There's often zero deaths in large accidents because the more people that die, the more senior the leadership that has to manage the event and get called away from their jobs or homes. Plus, businesses can bribe the social media companies to hide product complaints or malpractise by adding keywords to their social media filters, or to hide a competitor's product from trending, usually through bot manipulation or 'water armies' to flood the topic/keywords with adult material and get the posts hidden/censored. Getting the software installed is the next issue, as there's often backdoors and monitoring "public safety" spyware that is preinstalled on tablets and phones, PCs and devices. There's ways around it, but you have to know it's there first, and have the tools/knowledge to remove it or neuter it from working so that it won't reinstall itself in an update. Phones that don't have it, can be confiscated to have it installed - notably at public checkpoints and airports, etc. Groups do exist that can VPN out, but there's no 'dark net' in china without there being some kind of authority bankrolling it and keeping it connected to the internet. Usually because it's useful for their own purposes, i.e. spying on people who think they're protected. Police Bullying is common, complaining about a product that's protected by the CCP indirectly, can land you in an overnight cell with no records kept, people often delete their posts as the threat to arrest can be very realistic. There's millions of internet police whose job is to intimidate people, or pay people to delete their negative posts. Especially if the person who did something wrong is in the Party, or is an official. If that happens, money wins. This is a place where every phone, every internet connection can be blocked, in almost real-time. Not because of amazing technology, it's just that they have millions of police that have authority to act, and apologise later. if at all. Phone conversations, group messages, images sent via text and social media can be deleted, even deleted from your phone's storage if it matches filters. There's government malware installed by retailers that can intercept and upload photos, audio, video, group chats, et al as a safety feature.

Tbh, it's really hard for me to believe this decision wasn't primarily or at least largely influenced by homophobia. I'm not in the WN community, but even I've heard of various BL and GL series that come from the CN industry. Even if you look at a lost of WC sites, you'll see adaptations of CN. Tapas has a lot of them. Some even have animated adaptations like Heaven's Offical Blessing. Media is one of the few things queer people in China can find comfort in. Though it's not outwardly homophobic like in South Korea, they're rarely ever even acknowledged by the CPC and are belittled and silenced. Many of these novel writers are likely queer themselves and this censorship largely targets their identities. It's just so bizarre to see a decsion motivated by this unless there's something more intense driving it.
Why is it that in any country with any political system, it's the people with the absolutely worst takes you've ever heard in your life that make it the furthest? Why can't the people with the good takes go into gov't?

Well this explains a lot. I used to read a lot of webnovels, mostly because reading is practically a cellular level addiction for me, and it's impractical to carry stacks of books around all the time like I did before smartphones. Now I've been unable to find decent quality webnovels for a long time, and even many that were pretty good before became, seemingly overnight, severely uninteresting and/or incomprehensible. As the translator for Cuttlefish's author notes and volumes summaries in the discord, I was personally there when Cuttlefish ranted about every part that he had to censor/alter.
All in all, there were only TWO parts in the entire novel that he had to change in the Chinese version (not the English version)
The first is the cultist incident on the train, where all the passengers got turned into puppets and showed Klein the "eight teeth" creepy smile simultanously. That part was removed in Chinese version for it being reported as "advocating terrorism".
the other known part that was censored, was Klein's encounter with a Demoness, where he basically nutted himself. The description of his physical reaction was removed in the Chinese version.

1.) physical injury, especially that which is deliberately inflicted.
2.) material damage.
3.) actual or potential ill effect or danger.

*Harm* : Verb
1.) to physically injure.
2.) damage the health of.
3.) have an adverse effect on.

I was wondering how web novels had undergone such a huge change in such a short time. Back then I assumed there was a certain restriction to writing but the internet still seemed somewhat manageable with it. Then in recent years, I can't find some stories at all or it's just completely watered down garbage with no creativity like nowadays. Where a bad guy can't do anything bad unless they kill someone. Maybe and probably off-screen.

Same, i know doulou dalu but idk the author, i read some Chinese web novel but i think most of them just trash
The animated show is fun & the manhuas are very pretty & entertaining, especially if it's your first time seeing this type of fantasy setting where characters literally gain levels like they're in a video game. The TV show is trash & I dropped the novel 'cuz 1) he went into way too much detail describing the body of a 12 yo girl (full paragraphs for her chest & bum, comparing her to adult women, etc) and 2) the author really likes to write porn where MC fucks every girl he meets, if she wants it or not.
Honestly if you want a good cultivation novel, you have other options, you just gotta dig a bit further (I'd recommend Heaven Official's Blessing - it has 2 seasons of animation, the novel is super funny & even has an official translation. There's also ORV & Solo Leveling if you want something more apocalyptic or modern ^^)
Honestly glad I watched this. Stopped reading Chinese wn's because a lot of Chinese novels I've read felt weak and now I know I won't be able to experience a great story thats consistently amazing through and through because of these rules.

I guess to put it into a western perspective. Imagine if games like Undertale for Fnaf were banned by America because it was "Un-American".

If anyone read his second soul land novel they would know how much his self insert in the first book tries to put the second mc under his heel. He causes so many problems for him and no one calls him out on it. It is worth noting that the government have *always* been banning stuff, long before the proposal. Asking for clarified criteria is, therefore, not a bad thing, assuming that the standard would have been the same either way(the devil you know etc etc). Never read it I have been trying to find non harem ones and the instant I see a tag with Harem I took a step back. The issue with cultivation with harem is usually pretty girls with no standing in the story other than being collectables. I probably wouldn't mind their presense but lately it becames rather generic I think.
@zaratastari2457 I think two novels that really defy that expectation is against the gods and martial peak. Especially against the gods but overall I like martial peak more.
They always give the girls cool stuff to do and even if they eventually become irrelevant because of the power scaling thier personalities are so distinct that it is fun just to see them interact with mc and the other characters.
@@UniversalControl-13I think NSHBA is different, MC actually cares about his harem and his harem is strong af, not like you usual Xianxia novel where harem member sooner or latter become cannon fodder.
I never knew any of this background story, but I definitely noticed when web-novel went from being poor value but with some addicting stories to just being openly scummy with the few novels being worth reading either not being greenlit beyond 40 chapters or just stopping suddenly at 200 chapters or so.

Heard not really anymore because author knows what will be censored so he will just try to abide the rules even if the quality suffers because of it
To be fair, a clear and concise list of what you can't post isn’t an inherently a bad thing. Otherwise, you end up with a situation like youtube when they can just decide on a whim what gets you demonitized or baned.
Reminds me of a comment I read a few years ago complaining how the sex scene in I Have a Mansion In The Post-Apocalyptic World were less detailed ad just become a passing statement or a hint that something happen. Censorship is *always* bad, mmkay?
