We sang this at school when I lived in Ohio but it was a slightly different tune. Now we are in New Zealand fifty years later. I was singing along to it on TH-cam and a little sparrow got so fascinated, it flew into the room, then panicked & almost knocked itself getting back outside.
This is what happens when you're from Rochester, live in BC and are explaining to your Canadian husband about jumping off trestle bridges into the Erie Canal
1977 my music teacher had us singing this in 5th grade while she played the piano. She also taught music to my father in the same elementary school! Here's to Mrs. Stimpson! Park Cities, Dallas, Texas.
Ah. Miss Stimpson, There were three of us trumpet students in her class, 1949, she convinced to play the heralding in the opera Aida. It involved triple tonguing which i had not yet mastered, Bill Savage and Bob Campbell had to carry the ball through one of the most embarrassing moments of my life of performing. Taught me to always be prepared and practice, practice, practice.
I’m 42 and not only did my husband and I each sing this song in school (him in NY, me in OR), we are just about to board a boat to RIDE on the canal and go through a lock!
We learned this song in 7th grade music class in 1945 when I was 12. I still remember all the words, and am happy to see from the comments that it is still sung in schools. Thanks for a lovely rendition and video.
learned it in elementary school, it popped into my head yesterday. When I tell you I had a crisis trying to find the song because I knew it came from something. Then my dad told me becuase he remembered and i was finally at peace :)
I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY, and in grade school we sang this song, and I've always loved in! Erie Canal was turned into Erie Blvd and there were stores and such built along that way in later years! I remember our parents taking us down to Erie Blvd before the changes came through the years, and we sat on the banks and did fishing, LOL!!! All gone now, sighhhh!!!
This was one of the many folk songs we sang at school when I was a kid. Every song had a story, and we learned a lot about our country through singing and discussing the songs. It's a shame almost all schools stopped doing this. It's a fun way to learn.
This takes me back to when classrooms had pianos and teachers actually played songs for us to sing along to. This song takes me back to the early 80s when we sang it in elementary school!
This song takes me back to my early school years. I remember when we learned and then performed (w/music class) on stage for class mates, staff, family etc...
My LATE uncle Edward Kile who lived in Scotia, NY was a mule driver who had the 15 mile run from Scotia to Amsterdam, NY. He was an amazing musician and we grew up listening to him sing and play his fiddle and squeeze box accordion and guitar. I think the music of these hard working men kept the mules going. When steam engines ushered in the 20th century. These mule drivers lost their jobs. Pete Seeger visited Uncle Ed and tape recorded the songs. Wish I had those tapes now.
We sang this song in music class also in elementary school back in the early fifties. Its good to hear it again I have never forgotten it. Wonder if Sal is still around .
There was a article in our Paper (the Columbus Dispatch) this morning about the canals and I got to thinking about that song, great video accompaniment. Thanks.
This is such interesting history! Didn't know. Thanks for sharing ! Greetings from the FAN foundation in Albany's sister-city Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Our music teacher in a grades 1-8 parochial school in Tullahoma, TN taught us this song when I was in 4th grade (many decades ago). I still know all the words to the song! 😮😁
I knew this by heart when I was in school in an Albany suburb. This is a great version of the song, but I have one quibble for Karl Gunnar Holmqvist...the capital of NY State is pronounced Awlbennee.
This is being pedantic. He clearly has a foreign accent and is not a native English speaker. Bet you can't pronounce Swedish city names 100% like a native speaker would either.
@@haleybear222 I actually can pronounce a lot of Swedish city names correctly. I lived in Finland for two years and visited Sweden many times. If I was going to record a song in another language, I'd learn to pronounce any place names before making the recording.
I had to sing it in 4th grade, Elementary School too. We made fun of the song then. Now I like the song, by other better known Recording Artists. Thanks 🚣♀️
Dude I remember singing this in music class awkwardly and it was so bad omg but my old memories are coming back from 2014 ahhhhh it was such a good year
Idk when you went through elementary, but we learned this in 95.. and my mom knew it the same way, and she graduated HS in 67.. it's just a timeless piece ☺️
Brings me back to 4th grade when we spent half the year just learning about the Erie Canal. Not just for social studies, we read a YA novel on it, too. I might not have learned anything remotely relevant to my area that year, but I sure know where to stop for pie next time I'm in 19th century upstate New York.
I forget the grade I was in when we sang this song but I might have been in the 4th grade. That would have been...doing math...taking off my slippers to use my toes....1981.
I was screaming at the tv today watching jeopardy when all the contestants did not know an answer regarding lake Erie and the erie canal. Schools just are not what they use to be 50 years ago. 😢 History is being lost and censored , and sometimes being missleadingly rewritten. It really needs to stop !
My APUSH teacher will NOT stop playing this song in class and I’m lowkey dying. It’s a good song but once you hear “LOOOOW BRIDGE! EVERYBODY DOWN!” for the fiftieth time it starts to get annoying.
Actually, that could be the original pronunciation, back when it was written over a century ago. It's closer to the British sound - and that's what Albany is named after ... Also it's closer to the New England accent and the Canal is way up there.
The song was written in 1905. I think Albany was always pronounced "All-bany; at least, Albany, New York. I know there are other cities named Albany also. btw, I lived in New York State and have been to Albany several times.
this is what happens when your history teacher who grew up on a farm in New York breaks into song randomly. You find yourself here every single day.
DucksUnlimited this is what happens when you grow up on a farm in New York, the song is ingrained into your brain and you randomly start singing it 😂😂

I thought the same thing. He said Al-bany [like you would pronunce the name Al]
