- Thousands of mourners have gathered for the funeral of Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei.
The athlete died after being set on fire by her former boyfriend, and has now been buried in her father's homestead in eastern Uganda.
As she was also a member of Uganda's armed forces, soldiers carried the coffin and gave a three-volley salute at the service.
Dickson Ndiema attacked Cheptegei with petrol just under a fortnight ago outside her home in neighbouring north-west Kenya, close to where she trained.
The 33-year-old's killing, and its brutal nature, left her family distraught and shocked many others across the world.

I think Olympic athletes should get protection from the government if they need it. They represent the country, so they should get protection.
They're the national treasures who bring the medals for their country.

What an horrific way to die. May she rest in peace.
As a paramedic, I would say being lit on fire is basically the worst way to die. All your pain receptors in your body trigger, causing unfathomable agony that few or no other kind of injury can cause. It is literally my most feared way of death, I would endure an hour of any other torture before dying vs 1 minute of being lit on fire. I've seen fire victims die with my own eyes, helpless to save them... it haunts me like nothing else I've seen, and I've seen a LOT in my career.

This is a tragedy. For so many years so much activism has focused on fighting racism more than fighting misogynism and femicide. In fact, it has deflected from a bigger problem. These are African countries where black men are mistreating black women, you understand, right? Getting more women into policy-making is not an absolute guarantee for the protection of women as many women buy into power, greed and corruption in inherently patriarchial societies once they get into positions of power. You can see this all over Africa. Burning women is the fear and hatred of women. When and how will this fear and hatred stop? It's not just about empowering women. Men have to change their hearts and attitudes too. You can't have one without the other.

As a comment on what the UN Women Policy Specialist said, it would be great if there were cultural interventions to gender-based violence and the discrimination of women. Patriarchy takes a different shape by culture and any remedy should consider that as the means by which to change attitudes would necessarily differ.
They are not prepared to move with the tines anywhere including Europe it needs some parity to the world now.
I can see why, even more now, why Kenya has a woman only village.
Its really sad, infact currently most women from Kenya are looking for relationships outside the country because of such behaviors its out of control
