    As a retired mechanical engineer, I'll be interested to see what the maximum size wind turbine is for the best economy of scale. I wish we had leadership in the U.S. with enough foresight to realize that the fossil fuel industry is the past and new green technologies are the future. We are handing the development and manufacturing of these new technologies to Europe, China and India by subsidizing the oil industry to the detriment of green energy technology. I fear we will pay a heavy price for this lack of a long term strategy.

      RonKirk%) I took a vacation out west this summer, 2019. I saw many wind turbines and the blades being installed in South Dakota and Wyoming. The blades were being trucked on special design trailers and shipped by trains. Driving south through Indiana I saw over a thousand wind turbines operating. The USA government announced that wind generated electricity had just past coal produced electricity. I drove past through Gillette, WY in June of 2019 and saw the strip coal mines and the trains that carry the coal to market. Two weeks later it was announced that two of the strip mines closed. So, I believe USA is on the right track with wind generation, even though, Trump is a moron deriding the industry and by calling wind turbines, windmills (An old devise used to pump water and grind grain into flour.)

      +Frederik Jacobsen In reality, they are made of a thin hardening layer that includes styrene as the outside coat, and lot of fiber glass. That's it. The problem is that it's a craft. It's difficult to lay the fiberglass in the correct layers, lengths, positions and techniques without following the company's design. The layout would be to much for an 3d printer.

      Never mind the actual blade, think of the steel tower and the concrete to keep it from toppling over. No matter what the heat source is, to get 112 kg from ferric oxide, you emit 66 kg of CO₂; likewise the quicklime needed for the concrete's cement requires the heat for the equation CaCO₃ => CaO + CO₂, which means that you need heat energy And the emission of 44 kg CO₂ to get 56 kg of quicklime, CaO

    why not make 3 shorter turbines would be much economical then 1 giant expensive turbine also can u imagine transportation and instalation cost? i think it never pays back since bearings dont last as long on that big 0

    • @gustavselin1197
      @gustavselin1197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Within a year of installation, the cost of a wind turbine is paid back, both economically and in emissions.
      It's also better to build one big 3 MW turbine instead of a couple of smaller 1 MW turbines.
      It reaches higher up which means higher and steady wind speeds.
      The material, the cost of installation and transportation is cheaper than what it would take to install three smaller turbines to enable the same power output.
      It takes up a smaller piece of assembly area and less infrastructure in relation to how much three smaller turbines would collectively occupy.
      A bigger turbines also means it will be easier for maintenance personnel to work inside, the small ones are really cramped in comparison, and the time for e.g. yearly service takes about the same time but would then be tripled because of the amount of turbines.
      I know this because I've have for two years written papers and studied to work in this business and also work with servicing wind turbines.

    Why large turbines do not have lights at the hub, mid span and tip is nearly beyond my ability to imagine. Bird strikes are an issue. The lenses themselves can be incorporated into the airfoil section at any point. Given a span that large, the outer third of the blade could feature a variable pitch section.

    An amazing combination of painstaking manual labor and the most expensive materials and technologies, then to entrust everything to the strength, character and mood of the wind. When you need more energy - more blades, more wind turbines, more money. Even in the car there is an accelerator pedal, in clean energy it is not accelerator pedal and this is a problem.

If I were President I would make it mandatory that all USA electricity would be generated by wind turbines by 2030.. Yes, it could be done. All it requires is the will of the people to do it.

    • @michaeljoesting4888
      @michaeljoesting4888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don’t recoup even a fraction of their cost and they don’t last long because they are constantly exposed to the elements which significantly increases their operating costs. The design is full of flaws. Not to mention they ruin the natural landscapes and cause major health problems. Overall the costs really out way the benefits. So go take your tree hugging good for nothing green energy bull shit and leave cause we don’t need pussies like you in this wonderful country.

    Rocket science is far easier than climate modelling. As a matter of fact, building a wind device even as good as this one may be as difficult as designing a rocket.
    But it is sadly misguided engineering cleverness.
    It is devoted to an energy supply that amounts to begging in the street for your income.
    That blade, once installed, has to be held in a single bearing that can rotate it on its own axis, to allow winds of a speed in excess of what gives the "turbine's" rating, to slip by without wrecking the entire device. The bearing has to be lubricated, and the wind-sensory apparatus very precise.

    No, I'm afraid it's not rocket science. Even rocket science is not rocket science anymore. This is just a quantitative step, and rocket science used to be about huge qualitative steps.

      It´s offshore, so that point is irrelevant.

      Why do you want them to be smaller? That only means more turbines to get the same output.
      Within a year of installation, the cost of a wind turbine is paid back, both economically and in emissions.
      It's better to build one big 8 MW turbine instead of a couple of smaller 1-2 MW turbines.
      It reaches higher up which means higher and steady wind speeds.
      The material, the cost of installation and transportation is cheaper than what it would take to install smaller turbines to enable the same power output.
      It takes up a smaller piece of assembly area and less infrastructure in relation to how much smaller turbines would collectively occupy.
      A bigger turbines also means it will be easier for maintenance personnel to work inside, the small ones are smaller and more cramped inside in comparison to a big one, and the time for e.g. yearly service takes about the same time but would then be multiplied because of the amount of turbines.
      Bigger is more efficient than smaller ones.

    This is a poor business strategy, need to put these on an assembly line and pump out 1000 blades an hour and I'd be impressed.

      They're expensive things to fix, you can't get quality from pumping them out.
