Dude.... The next time that comes off like that... Go ahead and pull the main pin out that is the master pin pull it out... Get a tree and lay it down in front of the blade... Put the blade down on the tree log... So the blade will skid down that log and will not dig into the dirt... and it'll drive the sprocket down into the track... And travel along the track so that the end of the track is about 5:00 o'clock position... Now lift the blade so the sprocket comes out of the track... Maybe block it in on the tow hitch so that you can get the cat to come up out of that track just a little bit so it won't grab it... Pull the track up to the drive sprocket with a come along by putting bulldozer in reverse of course and get it to get a hold of the track at the 11 or 12:00 o'clock position so that it hooks on the upper part of the sprocket.. Putting in reverse breaking the other side from turning.... let clutch out slightly slowly pull track onto the sprocket from the top keep going until it comes around and you can see that it's going to make it so you can slide that pin in.... pull blocking out from under the trailer hitch ...push the blade down embed the sprocket in the track at 6:00 position and you'll notice that you'll be able to slide the pin in. The two links are on the sprocket right in that area ....their timed perfectly and the pin .... in fact.....will slide right in... the whole thing can be done in about 3 minutes... I've been working around bulldozers for 55 years... That's the quickest and easiest way that I know of to do it ....the old timers taught me I'm 73 now................ You may need the tools to break the track apart... But you did okay.... You got the track back on... One thing I did not see you do though... is use the power from the other side to spin the machine... Think about it ...if you would have put the bulldozer in reverse with the blade up it would have put that sprocket right over the top of that track then push the blade down embed the track into the sprocket.. now go forward with something under the blade that it can slide on so the blade does not start pushing dirt. And roll the track back on the sprocket by going forward... What you do is.....you go slow and methodical... And like I say you can put the blade down and go in reverse on the other side stop the sprocket from turning on the side you're working on and manipulate where that sprocket goes side to side by spinning the machine and you can reduce pressures on things if you think about it by using that power from the other side... You know what I'm saying.... Most of the time when you do that that blade has to be able to slide on something it can't be creating a drag problem up there it has to be able to slide sideways on the log or lengthwise on the log I'm talking the log underneath the blade.
The wise does at once, what the fool does at last. Thanks for all the videos this year Andrew. Watching you work away has helped inspire me to get a lot of my property projects wrapped up. In the past my pursuit of perfection with projects made it so I didn’t actually get a lot completed. Tons of half finished projects, then I’d get overwhelmed. Nowadays I accept that a job finished, even if not “perfect” is still way better then something half completed.
Never have I felt it was more likely someone was gonna get seriously injured than in this video. Big groups of guys, heavy equipment, everyone wanting to be the man that solves Andrew’s problem. Shake hands with Danger.
Moral of the story, if you operate a segmented tracked vehicle, always have: 1. two spare track links and pins/bushings 2. grease gun, basic, manual, feel the pain 3. socket set for the specific job of removing the grease pressure. Usually, you'd make a tool with sockets akin to a wheel wrench. None of the tracked vehicles we operate leave the bay without these tools and on our more newer units we've bought the auto grease setup where there's an air chamber where you can use a compressor to push the grease you let "out" of the piston, back in - thus making it a tool-less operation. Dunno that i'd recommend it yet, it's new, it's china special, doesn't work perfect.
Not all steel tracked machines use grease type tensioners. Much of the older stuff uses springs and tensioner rods. You need to grease your machine most every day and check things such as track tension. If your machines sprocket teeth are hunting then you need pins and bushings. I just put 10k into my 1950 John Deere MC. Pins and bushings and converting the idlers and rollers to tapered roller bearings, and rebuilding both final drives. Spent 1k just on new fasteners. I had six inches of slack in my rails and so much wear in my rollers that the rock guard/roller frame was cutting a groove in the back side of my grousers. I keep a tool box with my machine that includes all the wrenches and a 3/4 inch drive socket set. In this case I suspect that someone had his track tensioner a bit to loose and caught a rock. I have a backhoe on the back of my machine and a 4 angle blade on the front so when I threw my track I lifted the track clear of the ground and backed off the tensioner and used a prybar to get the track back on the sprocket first and the idler last. You have nothing on the rear but you did block the rear up and lift the track up but you were fighting the dirt getting the track back on. If you had shoveled the dirt from under the sprocket you could have pryed it over much easier.
After watching nearly all of you videos over the last 4 plus years I think I’m qualified to say that cat bulldozer and the yanmar mini ex are your two most useful pieces of equipment!

Especially since this is a five minute job for anyone with experience, Jack up dozer hook chain to track and Draw bar, with boomer back up. Why I always keep a 50 ton Jack in the Truck.
My track came of on my Komatsu D31P-17 and is still in my woods. I am alone and was looking for vids on how to get back on. I'll tell you this, it was scary watching this video. This machine is stronger than 1000 men+ and can kill or injury you if not extremely careful. Putting a chain and cables around the track and being anywhere in the area can cause many problems. If the cable crabs you leg, arm or breaks, its going to fly in the area. Glad it all worked out for everyone. Be careful.
Putting tracks back on is one of my *least* favourite things to do. I had a mini excavator that threw them all the time. One of the best parts of upgrading to my new excavator is that it never throws tracks off.
Next time this happens, slew the dozer in to the side of a tree. I used to do that heaps of times with my old international because the running gear was stuffed.
You see that comment I left.... Here's the great thing about it you can do the whole thing all by yourself you don't need anybody to help you... I don't care if it's a small Oliver bulldozer or a d8 cat or a giant track mounted crane... That technique I talked about is only known by a few and you're the new guy that knows it.

My track came of on my Komatsu D31P-17 and is still in my woods. I am alone and was looking for vids on how to get back on. I'll tell you this, it was scary watching this video. This machine is stronger than 1000 men+ and can kill or injury you if not extremely careful. Putting a chain and cables around the track and being anywhere in the area can cause many problems. If the cable crabs you leg, arm or breaks, its going to fly in the area. Glad it all worked out for everyone. Be careful.
Putting tracks back on is one of my *least* favourite things to do. I had a mini excavator that threw them all the time. One of the best parts of upgrading to my new excavator is that it never throws tracks off.
Next time this happens, slew the dozer in to the side of a tree. I used to do that heaps of times with my old international because the running gear was stuffed.
If you've seen Andrew put on many tracks in the past, try watching Squatch 253 vids where he actually restores and rebuilds a D2's tracks.
D4 is a great machine. Hope to see some snow machine vids this winter !!
You see that comment I left.... Here's the great thing about it you can do the whole thing all by yourself you don't need anybody to help you... I don't care if it's a small Oliver bulldozer or a d8 cat or a giant track mounted crane... That technique I talked about is only known by a few and you're the new guy that knows it.
