well done i was too scared to get it done. I'm (m30) I once seen a post on Reddit asking women if they would consider dating a guy with a overbite and more than 80+% said they wouldn't. I'm not bad looking but always wondered why I struggled with women. it's late but I decided to go with the sergery.
Hi! I am a 16 year old female who had a double jaw surgery to correct an uneven jaw and overbite right before my birthday. My family and I had always known that I would likely need surgery; we had tried other options when I was still growing, but in the end, we knew I’d have to have it. So, I wanted to share with you my experience, and tell you guys all of the most important stuff! 1. APPEARANCE. Believe it or not, the jaws affect SO MUCH MORE than just your jawline! I remember, on my last few months, I noticed so many unappealing features after a friend’s sister pointed out that my face was asymmetrical as a joke. I had, of course, the crooked jawline- but I had no idea how much it affected my entire face. Well- okay, it’s more like my family, friends, and even some doctors didn’t know hahah. One side always seemed to have more of a jawline than the other (left had the most, right had the least). This is to be expected- after all, I did literally have a crooked jaw- but even my nose, lips, and eyes were affected too! My nose had a dip in it just after my nasal bone and made a strange curve. However, after my upper jaw was moved forward? The dip was gone! Before surgery, I had also noticed my eyes were uneven too. One seemed to be higher than the other and more distal, but after surgery, that fixed too! With the new area, my lips were also able to protrude more- it actually looks like I had some kind of filler! To me, the appearance always mattered the most, and I have to say- if you have good insurance? This procedure will give you not only a better way of life, but also cosmetic improvements that would’ve costed THOUSANDS for other people. 2. RECOVERY For me, recovery has been very well! It can be scary to think about- but I’m going to be honest- pain wise? If you are ever in pain, the worst it feels like is a bit of sore gums and MAYBE a toothache, which can be fixed right up with medication. The worst part, I’d say, is the swelling. The swelling can be scary, because your face looks completely different- but I was very lucky to get my swelling in my cheeks! I kind of just look like I have a baby face lol. If it weren’t for bruising, I’d even say by about day 6-7 you can go out! You’ll look very different, but not a bad different whatsoever! The eating part might not be pleasant if you enjoy food, but overall, I would say it’s worth it. My Specific Case: So my case, I will admit, was a lot different I think. I had a very wonderful surgeon who had tons of experience. Also, I am generally healthy, and let me tell you- I knew that my asymmetry in my face was just caused by the surgery all along. NO ONE believed me. You might not either- it is crazy to think that a movement of jaws changes everything- but it is absolutely true! The surgeon said that I was one of the easiest patients to work on. I ended up not needing the movement of my chin- my face was just fine after the surgery due to delicate, more feminine features, the plastic surgeon said. I can’t tell you how comforting that was to hear. This jaw problem can totally cause your natural beauty to not be able to show, and having it fixed just shows how gorgeous you really are. Overall, the jaw surgery is completely worth it!! I’ve had so much more confidence, and am even considering trying out modeling. (Just make up for now- my body still needs some help lol). I know of one girl who had this same surgery- it increased her confidence so much, she went to France, where she became a successful model! Always trust your doctors and what they say, but if you commit to this surgery, I promise, it’ll be worth your time. Not eating for a while may suck, but I’m about a week in, and even with the swelling still here, I can confidently tell you this will be the best decision you ever make for yourself. You can completely change your life.
This has made me feel better ❤ I’m a 15 year old female and I’m probably getting this when I’m 16 or 17. I hope you have an amazing and quick recovery and I hope 3 months later you’re doing well 💞
This was very helpful and informative! I am surprised they let you get the surgery so young though.....I am a 23 year old female and have just started my journey (braces first). They told me I needed to wait till my early 20s in order to let my jaws fully "mature". I would've loved to be able to get the surgery at a younger age, but at the same time am glad I dont have to go to highschool during the recovery period. Would love to hear an update!!!
Do it, if you're seriously considering it then it means you probably need it and you won't regret it. I'm two months away from jaw surgery now. I can't wait to get it done!! Good luck to you 🙏
@@SlowedFavSongs I'm so happy for you that you chose to do it for yourself. I'm rooting for you too!!! And thank you for the good luck wishes!! I'm gonna need em, lol 🙏💯✨
I had two major jaw surgeries because the left side of my jaw wasn’t growing like it was supposed to. I had to get braces before the surgery and ended up having to have them on from 6th grade to my junior year of high school. It really made a difference for me and it no longer hurts to eat! Super thankful for my amazing surgeons. Thank you for all you do! (Also made my jaw line symmetrical and looks so much better now!)
@@domsingh3751 well at that time my parents had really good health insurance so it paid for most of both surgeries, we only had to pay like $200 which is nothing compared to the tens of thousands of dollars that they cost out of pocket.
@@domsingh3751 I’m not sure how much it cost in total. But I know for both surgeries it was over $20,000. Mine was too but I have a lot of bone and joint issues so they deemed it medically necessary for me to have them done.
A "brief period of time to adjust to a new facial appearance". A TH-camr I follow had double jaw surgery and it took her at least a full year of struggling and some professional mental health care to accept her 'new' face. That's not brief or easy. That said, the procedure has cured all of her bite problems and was definitely worth it.
One of my biggest regrets not having it done when I had a chance. I’m 30 years old now and I had a chance when I was just 12 years old to get it done but I was too scared to get it done. My parents should’ve forced me to get it done because I live in so much pain today, I stutter, my teeth are screwed up badly, I’ve worn them down so much, I have breathing problems, sleep issues & anxiety is through the roof. Whatever you do get it done. You’ll thank yourself later that you made that decision. Don’t live in regret like I do. It’s too expensive for me to afford rn.
@ nahh not by the dentist recommendation at the time. I had braces on at the time at that age thinking that was going to help to correct it & sadly it didn’t work. I had a severe underbite then & still do although now it’s gotten a whole lot worse and my breathing is now being affected. It’s hard to sleep at night too. Being 30 now is just too much for me to afford it & bare it on my own. I have a lot of anxiety. The prices are outrageous & the recovery would be too much for me to handle. Too much going on. 😕
@ I’m in the exact same situation as you. 12 is too young. Many people that get it before 19 end up with a underbite again because they aren’t done growing. I sympathize with you. But you just have to figure out a way to do or don’t. If your life would be measurably better you’ll need to find a way.
I had my lower jaw advanced back in 2003. Before the surgery could happen, and before the braces could go on, I had an appliance glued to my upper teeth. I think it was called a spacer. There was a little wheel in the part that covered the roof of my mouth and every night my mom had to take a key that fit into the wheel and turn it so that my upper jaw would expand. Eventually I had an enormous gap in my front teeth that thankfully closed after my braces were put on. I don’t remember much from the jaw surgery, just that I stayed overnight in the ICU then went home the next day. I had to wear a “jaw bra” to help with the swelling. My mouth wasn’t wired shut but just rubber banded. I went through a lot of Jell-O in the immediate aftermath. The surgery was considered medically necessary but I don’t remember having any issues with chewing or speaking before it was done and my profile didn’t change much.
My orthodontist wanted me to get DJS first (before braces) They installed the brackets a week before surgery and plan to finish the braces installation 8 weeks later. I'm on week 6 post-op. I started off as a class III underbite and crossbite. I have a pretty significant overbite now after surgery. From what I've been told, the overbite is normal and the braces will fix this. The reason the overbite is bigger is because they accounted for the expected relapse which is common and expected in my case. I'm really hoping everything aligns perfectly after the braces and relapse like they're predicting.
hi, I was a "surgery first" patient as well. It's been four months since I had my double jaw surgery (for an underbite and asymmetry on lower jaw). My mouth was wired shut for 3 weeks & after those weeks when they opened my mouth, I had a hard time closing my mouth (like I couldn't properly bite down on my own teeth). But, after a few weeks, everything healed itself with help of braces & elastics. Today, I can chew/bite/talk easily. I have no problem opening or closing my mouth/teeth as well. Braces do fix that problem. Just be patient. Time heals everything! Hope my words helped. I wish you a smooth recovery. :)
3:22 I had mandibular set back surgery after removal of the four wisdom teeth. My lower lip is permanently numb because of this procedure. I was already informed beforehand of this resulting condition. But I have a great set of teeth.
Unfortunately, most lower Jaws that get retractive surgery are not protrusive. Almost always the preferable position is to leave the lower jaw in the forward position, and just advance the maxilla as much as necessary. If the lower jaw is surgically retruded, the airway will be collapsed, increasing the likelihood of sleep apnea The other thing I noticed, was the fact that there were some extremely narrow maxilla’s in this video, and maxillary SKEKETAL expansion was not performed, where you can see the patient would’ve most definitely benefited from maxillary expansion first. I don’t blame these doctors though; very little is taught about jaw position and skeletal development and it’s relation to AIRWAY. We Need to breath mainly through our noses! Whatever needs to be done to increase the ability to breathe through our noses needs to be focused-on (maxillary skeletal expansion) and the air then has to have minimal resistance making its way into the lungs, therefore keeping pharyngeal airway open (keeping mandible advanced) is also extremely important b
Hi I need help. I’m really very scared to do surgery. Should I do it or not? I don’t want to look freaking ugly. Im very sacred that I don't know what will happen to me in the future. Does the bone heal back to 100% strength in the jaw? Or is there a weakness. After full recovery are their any restrictions to life? Could I become a MMA fighter if I chose to
Hi, I have a significant overbite. I had braces for three years and my teeth are now aligned, but my jaw and face structure still look like a goose. After my braces were removed the orthodontist told me I couldn’t have jaw surgery, this made me very sad, because I thought everything was going to be fixed with the braces. He told me I could do a genioplasty, but I don’t think it’s going to look the same. It still possible for me to have jaw surgery, I feel that I wasted all my money on braces.
@@smileymctrashbag Hi, I’m trying to schedule a meeting with a Maxilofacial Medic, but where I live there are not many. I’m hoping to be able to have the jaw surgery, it would have been easier and better for me from the beginning. Thank you for your recommendation!
Hey bro i have exactly same prb my uper teeth and lower teeth are not correct so I'm thinking about braces so what is best option jaw surgery or braces
What if the patient grew up mouth breathing and tongue on floor entire growth, they now have flat face with no undereye support, and a narrow upper palate.
I’ve just begun Invisalign for crowding and have a very deep bite. My orthodontist said my bite could only be improved with jaw surgery. I’m 62 and he said that at my age surgery wasn’t recommended because bones don’t heal as well in older people and because of age the surgery wouldn’t necessarily give me a good result. Does that sound reasonable?
I’ve heard that there’s an unofficial age limit for the surgery as well. Before a certain age because might not heal as well due to bone lost nature and etc. best age is 18-45” if not mistaken.
Hi doctor thanks for the video it is really informative video. Just wanted to understand in the risks it is mentioned nerve injury, can you please elaborate what could it be and what could be the effects of such injury? And is it permanent or can be cured ? Look forward to your response. Thanks.
Hey! I’m no doctor, but I had the surgery 2 years ago. I unfortunately got one nerve injury that can come with the surgery. It’s like a numb/sting feeling in one or more spots in the face where the nerve can’t fully recover in which can happen if the nerve is to close to where the surgeon needs to cut and the things they do in a surgery. So the nerve gets damaged and can’t recover properly.
Hi I have a few questions, is jaw surgery always necessary? Will you be affected in the long run if you don’t get surgery? Do you recommend it for older patients? I have a mild underbite, I have been to many orthodontists some have told me I need surgery, others have told me I can fix it with braces+elastics which I choose to do,But I am worried about the effects in the long run I am an older patient?! I really don’t want and have money for surgery.
I’m going to South Korea at Seoul Guide Medical and it’s only $15 for both of my Jaws to get Double Jaw Surgery, do some research on the right surgeon because one surgeon got suspended for botching a patient while other surgeons are the best in the world.
Is jaw surgery possible for someone who is 70 and have type 2 diabetes insulin and tablets dependent? I have class 3 malocclusion, open bite on left side with narrow and very high maxilla.
I had the lower jaw solo underbite surgery when I was 17 and I am so glad I did. I can't imagine the problems I'd be having right now if I didn't totally worth it! And of course, there's a great story behind it because the day after my surgery I'm in recovery about to be moved to a normal room but then we have the big blackout of '03 that covered most of New York State, Ohio and vast majority of Southern Ontario where I was! In the end I got sent home 2 days early! 😆
Where in Canada? I’m in Ontario and the surgery was covered by Ohip. The only thing I needed to pay was the 3D planning which was around 7k. Work benefit might cover some of those 7k cost. In my case around 2k.
Wow what a price difference in US and even within Canada. 20k to 40k in US. 12K in Canada (not sure which part), I got quoted for 7k in BC for lower jaw.
@@hannytarore4472 I just visited a new orthodontist because of these comments, I had a feeling I was getting ripped off. The new price I was quoted is 8,800 and I no longer need to have teeth removed.

I wish I knew the right decision. My surgery movements were 4 mm forward and mandible 2 back- 3 piece Leforte 1. Another surgeon wanted to do 6mm forward and nothing on mandible. Fourth surgeon just wanted to advance the mala for tract the mandible to and not do a three piece the two that wanted three piece to move 4 mm and back to or two of the top surgeons in California that wanted to move mandible forward and not touch. The bottom was well known facial and facial and male female surgeon in San Francisco and the fourth surgeon in California also is VSP but does a lot fewer surgeries and the ones who do hundreds of year and he said I don’t need a piece of, but I also know nowadays that that’s just a more complicated surgery so if you are not an expert that you shouldn’t attempt of course I don’t know
Hi Dr. I have a question, I’ve had braces in the past, about ten years ago, so my underbite was corrected, but I have a retruded jaw. My side profile look like image at min @4:38 , I do suffer from sleep apnea and have trouble swallowing food and sometimes with speech. Is it possible that I am a candidate for a ortho surgery even if my bite is fine?

@@RoflJoker1994 I already did in the last consultation, at first he refused to see some photographs somebody took of me (The person who took the pics did with a mirrorless camera and a 50mm lens) So that I could show him the problem, then he told me he shaved my right side of the chin to even it out, when my longer side was actually the left (he made a mistake) Then he offers me a camouflage operation to mask the problem, then he says that they need to have a look at my case more carefully to find out if there's actually a bite or bone problem. My replies was how come you didn't see that before you operated me? That's what you were supposed to do in the first place. My jaw problem as always been a bone problem not a bite / teeth problem.

2. RECOVERY
For me, recovery has been very well!
My Specific Case:
So my case, I will admit, was a lot different I think.

I hope you have an amazing and quick recovery and I hope 3 months later you’re doing well 💞
Thanks so much for this insightful comment🩷
This was very helpful and informative! I am surprised they let you get the surgery so young though.....I am a 23 year old female and have just started my journey (braces first). They told me I needed to wait till my early 20s in order to let my jaws fully "mature". I would've loved to be able to get the surgery at a younger age, but at the same time am glad I dont have to go to highschool during the recovery period. Would love to hear an update!!!
I’m about 6 months post op now. Would absolutely recommend this procedure. Changed my life.
Any side effects?
Thanks for the illustrations, the surgery procedure is so much clearer and easier to envision.
Glad it was helpful! 👍

(Also made my jaw line symmetrical and looks so much better now!)
what about the surgery cost
@@domsingh3751 well at that time my parents had really good health insurance so it paid for most of both surgeries, we only had to pay like $200 which is nothing compared to the tens of thousands of dollars that they cost out of pocket.
@@Isaiah-xi3lu actually my face is asymmetrical .. so what about the cost of surgery?
@@domsingh3751 I’m not sure how much it cost in total. But I know for both surgeries it was over $20,000. Mine was too but I have a lot of bone and joint issues so they deemed it medically necessary for me to have them done.
The matter is important for sick people, not the well-being of the situation is serious
12 would of been too young anyway. You have to wait until you’re done growing. 30 is the perfect age to get it.
The surgery was considered medically necessary but I don’t remember having any issues with chewing or speaking before it was done and my profile didn’t change much.
was there any nerve injury
Hello at what age did you had your surgery my orthodontist said I need to wait till 21 or atleast 20 and only afterwards I can have surgery
@@zigsaw7161 I first had braces when I was 10. Then I had braces again when I was 32 along with the orthognathic surgery.
@@RaymondHng how old are you now?

Funny thing is nerves do regenerate. You mat get feeling back! It took me decades, but I regained feeling.
Unfortunately, most lower Jaws that get retractive surgery are not protrusive.
Almost always the preferable position is to leave the lower jaw in the forward position, and just advance the maxilla as much as necessary. If the lower jaw is surgically retruded, the airway will be collapsed, increasing the likelihood of sleep apnea
The other thing I noticed, was the fact that there were some extremely narrow maxilla’s in this video, and maxillary SKEKETAL expansion was not performed, where you can see the patient would’ve most definitely benefited from maxillary expansion first.

I need this surgery because my jaw almost gone and I'm also overbite problem
I’m gonna be getting this surgery probobly this year
Hi I have a few questions, is jaw surgery always necessary? Will you be affected in the long run if you don’t get surgery? Do you recommend it for older patients? I really don’t want and have money for surgery.
Try braces + elastics first if not you can always have surgery later on in life. That's what I'm doing but with an overbite
So jaw surgery is only for extreme cases of overbite? I think i have a mild one

The poor people in the video all needed to have their palates widened first. The second girl's face is crooked and her face looks too long even after surgery-not the best outcome. Were any of them taught proper tongue posture? A side profile pic of the last two people would've been very helpful to truly see the outcome. Orthotropics for the win!
