Top 3 motorcycle touring destinations in Europe

  • Top 3 motorcycle destinations in Europe is my choice based on my experience having toured these destinations. All three countries and roads are great with the Transfagarasan coming out the clear winner. The reason for this in my opinion and that of Jeremy Clarkson is that the Transfagarsan is really a great driving road with so much to offer. It is like having every single race track in the world seamlessly knitted together in one place on earth. Also it is the track with the least tourist, longest and the one that is patrolled the least, besides Romania is cheap and really surprised me. Stelvio in Second was really a good technically challenging road, plenty of touring options around with the roads to Switzerland with some of the best scenery i have ever seen. Austria and Grossglockener are also beautiful places to see with options like Zell am Ziller to visit as alternative tours the biggest draw back with these 2 places I would say is the Tourism flooding these places with visitors in cars, campers, motorcycles, cyclists, buses and Pedestrians.
    Below links to these places for your reading pleasure:

    Ring dolomiti passo is number one. Fedai, Rolle, Pordoi, Sella, Cassolungo, Djao, San pelligrino. This way open in spring 1 - 10 May. Water in waterfall is cool. Green grass in color flouers))) and clear snow

    Watching this randomly. Just adding a short comment on Transfagarasan.
    I've been living in Romania for 11 years now. This country is one of the safest I've lived in!!!
    My bike sleeps mostly on the side of the street, no lock, and never had a problem!
    These stories about Romania being a country of thieves is just mythology!
    About the roads, you hit the right ones. Transfagarasan and Transalpina are the best ones for sure. But you should try Cheia Bicazului too.
    When you're done with this winning trio, you would have had the best of twisty roads in Romania.
    Let me know if you intend to come back some day, and I'll come ride with you and show you around with an insider look!
    Ride long, Ride safe!

    A very informative video, thanks for that! As you can see on our channel, we are in Romania every year and drive the mountain roads there .. and I have been doing this since I was young because I was born in Sibiu and both routes were quite close .. All the more I am happy to see that many of you are going to Romania .. a country that did not exist for many a few years ago .. a beautiful country with beautiful people, hospitable and pure, awaits you there .. natural landscapes .. a country that has something for everyone from Beach to mountains. I live in Germany since 1995, a civilized country ... you can say, but motorbikes have already disappeared in our underground car park ... it is more a question of provocation or lack of security. Thanks again 0 to 100 Adventure and wish everyone a good motorcycle season !!

    As a romanian, all i can say is that Transfagarasan sucks big time lately. Yes, is a special road, but the asphalt is broken. If you ride a sport, naked or a sport touring motorcycle, you broke your kidneys. Literally! And is very-very-very crowded, especially in the weekend or in the summer holy/off days. In the August is full--full. There are a lot of clips in here from the 2019 that are showing this. And yes, the Transalpina is much better and much beautiful. And the asphalt is better. However, if you are choosing to ride these roads, choose the working days (from Monday to Friday) because in the weekend is like hell. Also, these roads are closed in the most time of the year, so is better to check them first if they're open. Usually, they're are opening in the beginning of June and are closing at the end of September (for Transalpina) and October (for Trasfagarasan).

    • @travelonmymoto9427
      @travelonmymoto9427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fully agree, most nice motorcycle roads in Romania, there are a lot, do them Monday till Fridays and not in the weekends. There are still a few nice roads which are rather empty in the weekends but not these. Have an ADV type motor but this year even I started complaining about the asphalt of the Transfagarasan :-(

    The Grossglockner is much more beautiful without Fog and Rain, but there is also much more Tourism at better Conditions. By the way, we here in Austria just call it the "Glockner" because "Gross" means Big, and we ain't got no small one, so you can spare it! Will be easier to pronounce for English speakers. ;)

    I haven't done those roads. I guess I need new friends to go do them.
    I'd like to add, Picos de Europa (every single road there was freaking amazing, and I went at a time that there weren't many cars) and the surrounding area. I mean, you can just go for 2 days and ride every single road you find, down to Riaño
    Also, go to the Spanish Pyrenees and do the N 260... BUT, not completely. You have to take the smaller roads that are close to the N 260, for example, ride the N 260 and do a detour through the Cañón de Añisclo. That is just an example, there are SO MANY roads on the Spanish Pyrenees, that just doing the N 260 is insulting.

      In my opinion, Transfagarasan is one of the most crowded passes on the Balkans. Going down to Bosnia and Herzegovina or Albania you can get almost empty roads. Even the Adriatic Croatia has fewer vehicles on the road than the famous Romanian pass. Yet, I agree Transfagarasan has superb corners and it is a great destination.

    Questions 1) do tolls take US Dollars or do you need local currency?
    2) What kind of paperwork do you need to have with you other than a US.passport?
    3) Are there places to stay on these three routes?
    4) How much do meals and overnight accomodations cost?

    • @0to100Adventure
      @0to100Adventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) you will need local currency.
      2) Drivers license and registered vehicle papers. Vignette stuck to windscreen where applicable.
      3) yes but each route differs e.g Stelvio we stayed on the pass itself, while you might struggle with accommodation and refueling in Romanian pass. The best is to plan your destination and stops beforehand. GPS is a must!
      4) Again this differs from country to country, with accommodation, fuel and food. The cheapest by far is Romania. this also depends on where you stay, e.g. lodge vs 5 star hotel. Again I would recommend some planning ahead of time. Romanian budget hotels = 50usd while Austrian bdg hotels = 110usd (just and example). It is imperative that you plan and book in advance. I depended very much on google maps to find me hotels in the area.

      North East fishing tackle I would say without stopping around 40min - 50 min with motorcycle from Bormio to Trafoi.

      North East fishing from London it is around 14hrs non stop, if we add a stop every 300km you need at least 4 stops, count on 6 stops and an additional.6 hours that would be 20 hrs riding. I would recommend splitting this over 2 days.

    Not really all that keen on the Stelvio. Just too many 180 hairpins means you have to keep slowing to a crawl or stopped trying to hold up your bike on an odd camber ( a real problem for me only having one leg). I don't think I got my fj1200 above 4th gear more than half a dozen times either. Gimme sweepies every day.

      @0to100Adventure  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      docthebiker agreed it is rather technical...fast and smooth sweepies are always great fun to lean the bike.
