As a new interpreter for the field, I will definitely take your advice to heart and use it to the best of my ability. Thank you. David

I was taught in my interpreting program to not take my problems home with me. You need to separate work from your personal life. Because whoever your living with at the time does not need the added stress. It's also good I found to take up different hobbies to help you cope with your stress.

[Jill] Yes that is exactly right.

wow, i never thought about this. i know the confidentiality can drive interpreters crazy because they cant talk about troubling experiences. as an interpreting student i will keep this in mind and bring it up in my classes if it goes unaddressed. thank you!!

+peachy Yes I think usually (not always) there are ways to talk about a situation while still being confidential.

Secondary trauma is 100% real. I've been a social worker for many years and have developed some resiliency. You've explained this very well.

[Jill] Yes, true it is real and many people don't understand that. I'm glad you have developed that resiliency. Thank you!

Love all your videos! I just started learning sign and have always since I was young considered interpreting as "my" job. I never thought about the issues you mentioned in the video 'til now though. I'm learning Auslan but I still enjoy watching ASL especially when I come across signs that are the same across both languages even though different in meaning. I'll learn ASL a bit more seriously in future for when I travel to the US, as it is of very little use here in Aus lol

+Cameron Miller Thank you! I'm glad to get you thinking about different issues. That would be great to have you come visit the US. :)

Can you please do a video about asl grammar and how that works. That would be awesome! 🙃

+Alissa wasylkiw That is not my strong suit so I don't feel right making a video on that. Maybe one day I can find someone who is better and would be willing to do a video like that. :)

Thank you for this interesting and informative video. It's not something I've experienced yet, hope not to. It will be good to have a plan. I tend to take things to heart very easily.

Sadly, a Deaf friend of mine had a traumatic interpreter experience. It still impacts her life to this day. :/
