Here in Croatia we could watch Venom triple feature. Six hours with two intermissions. It was fun because I didn't watch Carnage and first one was six years ago.
Plenty of average to bad superhero movies did really well in the 2010s (suicide squad, amazing spiderman 2, Thor the dark world, venom 1 all made around $700m). I think genre has lost much of the must-see, fear of missing out appeal with the general audiance . People will now only turn up when it is a must -see event that gets great reaction (like deadpool and wolverene). It makes me wonder whilst Superman and Fantastic 4 could do well, Captian America, brave new world, could flop if it is seen as wait for streaming or skip it movie like the Marvels..
I think with how quick things end up on VOD or Streaming has also played into this. You don’t have to wait very long to see the film, or for high quality pirated versions to be, online. Why spend £15/£20 per ticket when you can wait a month and spend less than that to own/rent the film.
Perfect explanation. I really hate the narrative that these films have gotten worse over time when there were many films like Iron Man 2 or 3 that were mediocre and did well.
It's disappointing to see 'The Marvels' have the biggest drop off. I actually thought it was a better movie than the first. 'Joker 2' really deserves that top spot. If the box office for 'Captain Marvel' hadn't been inflated by its proximity to the last two 'Avengers' films the drop wouldn't have been as drastic and 'Joker 2' would be at its rightful spot.
It's October 28th, ans We Live in Time is in TWICE as many theaters as Joker 2. Even foreseeing a crash for Joker 2, you would have had a hard time convincing me of this a month ago.
One important thing about election that I still can not process, is the following: I come from a developing country in South America, and down there voting is NOT an optional thing, is not just your civil duty it is your DUTY...period...It is 100% mandatory, now you do have the option to excuse yourself due to hardship, but you will still need to obtain a certificate of absentee.. why? Because since voting is mandatory you will need a paper called "Certificate of voting", to perform any mayor activities such as buying a car, buying a property, sometimes even opening a bank account and so forth. That being said you only can vote on election day... YES in person, no early voting, in the mail ballot or any other way that could facilitate voter's fraud. Also there is one and only one ID that is accepted to vote and that is the "Cedula de Ciudadania" You cannot vote without it, so if you have lost it prior of voting day, you will not be allowed to vote and you will have to get an absentee certificate prior of paying a fine. By the way election day is not on a week day, it is ALWAYS on a Sunday, therefor there is no excuse of "My employee wouldn't allow me to go" Election hours are from 6 am to 5pm, after that elections are closed and no other person is allowed to vote, period. The idea of not requiring voter's ID here in the US is wild and ridiculous...It is the only way to guarantee transparency. Make it mandatory and make it necessary to identify yourself as a citizen...What is the big controversy about it???
I think mandatory voting would be difficult in a country our size, though I'm not saying it shouldn't be considered. It just wasn't a priority when our laws were written and, frankly, there were lots of people that weren't allowed to vote for a shamefully long time after our country was founded. I agree that Election Day should either be on a weekend or made a national holiday so that time off work isn't a factor. As to voter ID, there are many states (including mine) that do require identification to vote in person. For absentee or mail-in voting, you are required to provide a signature that is legally binding attesting that you are indeed the voter casting the ballot, which is personalized and trackable. Despite claims to the contrary, verified voter fraud is actually exceedingly rare in the United States given the size of our voting population. It is used as an excuse by some to discredit legitimate results, but has yet to be proven legally as being a real issue beyond a few scattered cases.
@@DanMurrellMoviesonly thing I disagree with you on is voting fraud. Just because it hasn’t been proven, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen or doesn’t happen. I do believe mail in ballots makes it a lot easier for fraud and I’m also a believer you shouldn’t have early voting. But in any case, the biggest thing with potential fraud is, is it enough to overturn the election and that is the part that hasn’t been proven. Is it possible some fraud happened 4 years ago? I think it is but was it enough to overturn the election? Very doubtful. As you stated there is no proof that it’d make a difference. But from Hilary in 2016 to Trump in 2020, you’re right, it’s just an excuse to illegitimize an election results and there will always be candidates crying foul if they lose.
@@DanMurrellMovies Dan, I feel is very naive the idea that a signature is binding and trackable where fraud at all levels happens on daily basis. Criminals steal identity to hack bank accounts, please do not pretend now that is "almost" impossible to forge signatures or even make non citizen and diseased people showing up with a fake signature...But obviously you are believing the playbook of those claiming election integrity for the purpose of creating an environment feasible for this same purpose. Any way I come from a country where voter's fraud has been sadly common in the past due to corruption and I have started seen signs and symptoms of the same here in America... Something that I thought I would never see.

33:00 It might also have to do with all the talks around the Harry Potter remake as a show. It'll be interesting to see if the other films get into the charts in the coming weeks.
technically Wicked is NEITHER a sequel nor a remake of the Wizard of Oz, it's actually like a PREQUEL which I know is splitting hairs but given that it's based on the mega successful Broadway musical (which I have actually seen several times because I work on Broadway) which is based on a novel that expands on the lore of the Wizard of Oz so therefore that novel is based on the original novel that the original Wizard of Oz movie is based on. All this to say the answer to your question is no this new Wicked movie is not a sequel or a remake of the Wizard of Oz because the events of the movie take place before Dorothy lands in Oz making it a prequel but should also not be on your original films chart because even though it is a "new take" on the Wizard of Oz that most people who have never seen the Broadway musical will be introduced to for the first time it is still based on a property that's been around for like a hundred years also they literally sell the novel the Wicked Broadway musical is based on at the show's merchandise stand at the theater /so that's a dead giveaway that it's not a wholly "original" concept
I'm aware of Wicked being an adaptation of a novel and that it's a prequel to the original L. Frank Baum story. My main question is how it should be regarded in relation to the movie The Wizard of Oz? Should it count as something that is not a prequel/sequel/remake of the original film, or should it be regarded as one? You can make a case either way. It's a very borderline case, which is why I opened it up to the audience.
@@DanMurrellMovies I would say yes it should be considered in the WOO universe. Kinda like how the various movies in the Marvel universe count. It's a prequel/ Elphaba origin story... Hope that helps...
Hi Dan, got an idea for a boxoffice/video maybe. Boxoffice sabotage. Myth or reality? Example: Just recently watched The Swan Princess again w my daughter on Netflix. Wasnt really a part of my childhood but overall not a bad movie. Looked very Disney-like but not quite there. Looked into the history and feud of ex-Disney employees creating their own studio etc. Boxoffice wise this was a huge bomb. 1994 was a busy year overall but some suspect foul play by Disney by re-releasing The Lion King in November after the first release ended in september. The Swan Princess was released, you guessed it, in November 1994. Coincidence? Would live love your take on this. When I read it I immediately thought of you and that it might make a fun section or video? Are their more of these release sabotages, maybe other famous box office battles? Regards Raf
Voting is compulsory here in Australia and while our system isn't perfect, I'm glad that we are all required to have our say. I'm surprised more countries don't do this.
Chart With Me UK Top 10 1 Venom: The Last Dance 2 The Wild Robot 3 Smile 2 4 Transformers One 5 The Apprentice 6 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 7 Terrifier 3 8 The Room Next Door 9 The Substance 10 Joker: Folie A Deux
The more Venom sells itself as a regular comic book movie or something epic, the less I am interested in it. Gimme that weird buddy cop/romantic comedy in the same body sell.
Mmhhh...This is complicated. It's doing muted numbers in the US but performing better internationally. In theory, it may do well enough that a sequel is plausible, but doing so could be risky cause it's clear the films have suffered from diminishing returns. So there might be trepidation to greenlit such a film right now.
@xger21 yea. The first two movies really failed on ... action and everything else. They felt generic and almost like well, it's a superhero movie and the act. Time for CGI polygons to have a goop fight. When this was all "epic finale" I was like... nah.
It's always nice to have proof at how much you read the comments. That being said... I would have included Batman, because "established franchise" isn't on your list of qualifiers. It wasn't directly connected to anything, just like Garfield. Not the same narrative storyline, which is IMHO what matters in terms of why remakes/reboots/presequels should be on the list. BUT... obviously... "same franchise" has a very similar effect. So yeah, as long as you're consistent (and you usually are of course) then it's all good. Here's a question for you: I feel that "same franchise" is a lot closer to "based on/inspired by." So I'd say Garfield, Batman Begins, and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship are on par in this particular metric. I'm ignoring the Ralph Bakshi movies even though I absolutely love those and they were a beloved part of my childhood, cuz calling Peter Jackson's movies a remake of those movies would be an extreme level of pedantry that is even too much for me. And remember, the list of movies based on plays/books/etc is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than most people realize. Die Hard, Mrs Doubtfire, Forest Gump, Jaws (that one always surprises me), hell, Shrek was based on a book (very loosely). There's a spectrum of "completely original" to "completely and totally just a new version of the same thing" and if you ever do a video on your thoughts on that, I would be a very happy camper (and I love when people find out Die Hard is based on a book). Keep up the awesome work, and I'm loving the interactivity of membership!
Dan just needs to also include “reboots” in the exclusions. Adapting a book that has already been adapted to film previously is effectively the same thing as remaking a film. Like how everyone refers to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a remake, but it’s not a remake of the first movie, it’s a new adaption ie a reboot. Similar story for Garfield, Batman Begins, Spider-Man Homecoming, and yes, even Lord of the Rings - it’s not a remake of the animated film, but it is a remake of Lord of the Rings. Remakes that have “new” narratives should still be excluded imo because that’s effectively the same thing as a sequel - still an established brand/franchise. I think Dan is trying to list the movies that are drawing interest based on their own merits that distinguish them from other movies that people may chose because they enjoy watching something they are already familiar with.
Is it less creepy than Mary and Max at least? I get that film is great and everything, but I cannot for the life of me stand the look of that film, and it always turns me off. Does Memoir look more “reasonable”?
@@NinthShinigami Memoir of a Snail was not creepy. Sorry I can’t compare to Mary and Max as I’ve not seen that. I would use the word poignant for Memoir of a Snail. I could use more adjectives but I don’t want to give away anything.

I recognize the font on your t-shirt. (whip-crack) "The Wizard of Oz" is itself an adaptation of a novel, so if the Judy Garland classic would qualify for a "non-sequel/prequel/remake" list, then so would "Wicked" since it's an adaptation of a Broadway musical which was inspired by the same novel--not necessarily the 1939 film. Perhaps to truly eliminate all doubt and protest regarding a list such as this, make it "original screenplay only" movies. Not adaptations of any source material and not dramatizations of real people or real events. That would make "Bob Marley: One Love", "The Fall Guy" and "It Ends with Us" ineligible, and make room for three more films that are truly original.
the musical is an adaptation of the book Wicked. The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which itself is inspired by the Wizard of Oz book and movie. I like the original screenplay version but the movies that leave the chart than should not be totally forgotten.
Hey Dan! I know this isn't related to the charts but I wanted to thank you for your recommendations on "The Remarkable Life of Ibelin". I've grown up with many friendships born and maintained through online games such as World of Warcraft and the film was extremely moving and emotional for me, and I likely wouldn't have known about it without your coverage from the film festivals it premiered at!
The members polls were kinda weird. Wicked is not a remake or prequel to The Wizard Of Oz. It is actually based on the broadway show that Idina Menzel starred in and was a Tony-award winning musical. Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia, Wicked is a loose adaptation of the 1995 book, Wicked: The Life And Times of the Wicked Witch Of The West, by Gregory Macguire, which that book is based on both the L. Frank Baum novel and the iconic 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. To me, Trap is basically a suspense thriller movie because M. Night Shyamalan is no stranger to plot twists. There’s nothing horror, no blood, no gore, just a straight up suspense movie.
Underneath "Venom-: 'til Death Do Us Part" you have it listed as "Venom: The Last Dance" along with the opening weekend box-office totals for the new film.
Been following for over a year now (took the five nights at Freddy’s part to remind me of that) and you’ve become a great part of my week. Thank you for all the hard work.
Thanks Dan, here in Australia voting is a happy tradition with many election day traditions, like grabbing a bbq sausage and onions, or supporting the local school by buying some raffle tickets! I actually think voting is quite fun provided you have time (and the line isn't too long) and know who you want to vote for. Plus in Australia most people are really nice and you can have interesting conversations with people whilst waiting in line!
Maggie Smith passed away September 27th so the streaming window for that Harry Potter movie showing on the charts checks out. She had a great career and will be missed.
I don’t have to worry about competition for the next few weeks because despite its somewhat disappointing opening but promising worldwide numbers, I think Venom 3 will be just fine. There’s not going to be any competition until November 22 when Gladiator II and Wicked releases and then Moana II on the 27th (Pre-Thanksgiving).
This channel is a gem! It's not just box office numbers--but such rich box office context. I feel like if studios paid attention to this channel--they would make better objective decisions on what they green light (and moviegoers would benefit too).
Dan, appreciate you. Appreciate your work, & the message rallying folks to vote. I have to ask, was it an intentional choice to omit the Box Office look back this week? I had to stop the video & go back to see if I missed it😅
Suggestion! I think it would be cool to have a rise and drop number (think -3 or +1) for films in the Box Office Top 10 from the previous week. Would give a nice indicator on how films slowly (or quickly) fall out of the top 10.
It would be interesting if for the year-end review you could include a section comparing the breakdown of box office per domestic/international for the top 10 movies.
Memoir of a Snail Director, Adam Elliot, is also the director of Mary and Max, which doesnt have an academy award win, like his 2004 short Harvie Krumpet, but is probably more popular

Conclave is attracting a much older crowd who very rarely goes to the theaters. Could have strong legs so long as spoilers about the ending don’t scare too many people away. My parents are excited to go see Conclave, and I think Oppenheimer was the only time they went to the theaters last year.

I'm SO HAPPY to hear Dan pronouncing "Pérez" correctly. You've been doing great with your foreign words lately, Dan. Keep it up!
Don't worry, I'm sure I'll screw up again soon, haha. The accent mark is appreciated in the title.
Here in Croatia we could watch Venom triple feature. Six hours with two intermissions.
It was fun because I didn't watch Carnage and first one was six years ago.
not enough intermissions!
Good message at the end.
@@henrypeters5291 I never bought that sentiment either, as it downplays the influence of trends in popular culture, including blockbuster movies.
previously there also was a fear of getting spoiled, but now people don't care as much and are fine to wait until the movie hits streaming.
Thanks for using your platform to encourage people to vote!
Thank you Dan for the encouragement to vote! My fiance and I got our votes in early, as did my family. Nice blue shirt you got there ;)
Red background tho very tricky
That new studio room is coming along quick! This episode looks great
awesome approach on voting dan!! thanks as always
Thank you for an intellectually forward discussion on voting and the importance of voting
It's October 28th, ans We Live in Time is in TWICE as many theaters as Joker 2. Even foreseeing a crash for Joker 2, you would have had a hard time convincing me of this a month ago.
Great ep as always, Dan! Thank you!! (Also hooray for mail in voting! I’m never going back haha 😆)
One important thing about election that I still can not process, is the following:
I come from a developing country in South America, and down there voting is NOT an optional thing, is not just your civil duty it is your DUTY...period...It is 100% mandatory, now you do have the option to excuse yourself due to hardship, but you will still need to obtain a certificate of absentee..
It is a prequel to the Prequel The great and powerful Oz.
Thank you as always, Dan.
looking forward to your thoughts on "Agatha all along". I really enjoy how "The Ballad of the Witches Road" has been weaved into the story. they knew what made Agatha so popular before and aren't holding back.
All this to say the answer to your question is no this new Wicked movie is not a sequel or a remake of the Wizard of Oz because the events of the movie take place before Dorothy lands in Oz making it a prequel but should also not be on your original films chart because even though it is a "new take" on the Wizard of Oz that most people who have never seen the Broadway musical will be introduced to for the first time it is still based on a property that's been around for like a hundred years
also they literally sell the novel the Wicked Broadway musical is based on at the show's merchandise stand at the theater /so that's a dead giveaway that it's not a wholly "original" concept
Thank you for this in depth response! I hope Dan sees this you did a wonderful job laying out your point
Chart With Me UK Top 10
1 Venom: The Last Dance
2 The Wild Robot
3 Smile 2
4 Transformers One
5 The Apprentice
6 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
7 Terrifier 3
8 The Room Next Door
9 The Substance
10 Joker: Folie A Deux
The more Venom sells itself as a regular comic book movie or something epic, the less I am interested in it. Gimme that weird buddy cop/romantic comedy in the same body sell.
Found the Joker 2 target audience
Mmhhh...This is complicated. It's doing muted numbers in the US but performing better internationally. In theory, it may do well enough that a sequel is plausible, but doing so could be risky cause it's clear the films have suffered from diminishing returns. So there might be trepidation to greenlit such a film right now.
Good take OP - approved
Yeah, I saw it, and it's biggest flaw was not enough Eddy/Venom is it romance is it buddy cop camp.
@xger21 yea. The first two movies really failed on ... action and everything else. They felt generic and almost like well, it's a superhero movie and the act. Time for CGI polygons to have a goop fight. When this was all "epic finale" I was like... nah.
Great words of encouragement at the end there Dan! Fitting for a channel about tracking Charts!
Here's a question for you:
I feel that "same franchise" is a lot closer to "based on/inspired by." So I'd say Garfield, Batman Begins, and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship are on par in this particular metric.
Memoir of a Snail is a gem of a movie. Hope lots of people check it out when it expands to more theaters.
Just saw Venom the last dance. I laughed a lot, I cried a bit, l loved the movie. I don’t understand which movie the rotten tomatoes critics saw, but it wasn’t this movie. Go see it.
I enjoy that you are outsourcing the "controversial" questions to the members lol
The Juror #2 release is pretty messed up. I've also read that Warners doesn't plan on sharing the box office
I just saw the trailer for this movie at the cinema and it looked pretty intriguing, so I don't get WB's choices either.
I dont think 51 million is a flop compared to its budget of 120 million
It will make its money back at the end of domestic and yes i know its lower than previous entries
Atleast it didnt cost 200 million before marketing
Thanks for another great video Dan. I appreciate you motivating people to vote.
I recognize the font on your t-shirt. (whip-crack)
"The Wizard of Oz" is itself an adaptation of a novel, so if the Judy Garland classic would qualify for a "non-sequel/prequel/remake" list, then so would "Wicked" since it's an adaptation of a Broadway musical which was inspired by the same novel--not necessarily the 1939 film.
Great advice at the end 👍🏻👍🏻
Channel members were correct in their latest poll. Good job!
That Joker vs Joker 2 earnings graph is INSANE!
Heads got to be rolling all over the WB lot!
I've gotta imagine that's the first time every title on your theater count change graphic was all over 1,000 theaters.
Thanks Dan. Enjoyed the show as always.
The election discussion was appreciable.
the beekeeper made more domestically than JOKER 2
who could have seen this coming??
Beekeeper was a surprisingly good action film.
Enjoyed it more than Joker: Folie à Deux
Underneath "Venom-: 'til Death Do Us Part" you have it listed as "Venom: The Last Dance" along with the opening weekend box-office totals for the new film.
That's because the movie is called Venom: The Last Dance.
@@DanMurrellMovies Oh, I see. "til Death Do US Part" was just a tag line.My bad.
Though ‘Til Death Do Us Part may have been the better name 🤔
Agreed!
I guess we (in the U.S.) are not Venom
Excellent charts episode Dan. Well said about voting. Looking forward to your review of Here. Also, will you be posting a review of Emilia Perez?
17:11 the first one was slotted between infinity war and endgame, literally at the peak of mcu craze, so there was a coattail effect there
The PSA on voting is what makes this channel great 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I don’t have to worry about competition for the next few weeks because despite its somewhat disappointing opening but promising worldwide numbers, I think Venom 3 will be just fine. There’s not going to be any competition until November 22 when Gladiator II and Wicked releases and then Moana II on the 27th (Pre-Thanksgiving).
I never made any comment about your French pronounciation, but hey you made a lot of progress on "folie à deux' so this is Worth mentionning. Congrats
The Wild Robot is probably the best movie I have seen this year. Ao pleasantly surprised
300 IQ move of Dan to let the public fight it out so he doesn't have to take the bullet in the comments anymore
Trust me, I still am. But I get to share the load, haha.
1:34 if anybody else got confused what a ''world series shwodown'' is its baseball
I had to stop the video & go back to see if I missed it😅
Video was running long, I decided to cut it.
10:19 God could you imagine being the commenter that changed Dans mind?! 😂
It was Nick Mundy wasn’t it.
45:48 Thanks for this Dan. Rock the Vote 2024!
Suggestion! I think it would be cool to have a rise and drop number (think -3 or +1) for films in the Box Office Top 10 from the previous week. Would give a nice indicator on how films slowly (or quickly) fall out of the top 10.
Dan, thank you SO MUCH for the sincere voter push. Everything you said was solid.
Just adding another voice of appreciation for the civics shoutout at the end.
It would be interesting if for the year-end review you could include a section comparing the breakdown of box office per domestic/international for the top 10 movies.
Well said at the end Dan
Nice to hear a movie from the Philippines get on your top 10.😊
12:00 Honestly, I'd prefer to see that list only be wholly original fiction films. Nothing based on a true story, and nothing based on existing IP.
Memoir of a Snail Director, Adam Elliot, is also the director of Mary and Max, which doesnt have an academy award win, like his 2004 short Harvie Krumpet, but is probably more popular
Great non-partisan message at the end there Dan. You're simply doing your duty as an American citizen by encouraging U.S citizens to exercise their right and privilege that many people in the past fought and died for us to have. Much love to all my fellow Americans and non-Americans out there! Please go out and vote! 🇺🇸
Thank you for encouraging people to vote
Conclave is attracting a much older crowd who very rarely goes to the theaters. Could have strong legs so long as spoilers about the ending don’t scare too many people away. My parents are excited to go see Conclave, and I think Oppenheimer was the only time they went to the theaters last year.
I voted this past weekend. It was the first time I had to wait in line for more than 15 minutes. I also live in a state with low voter turnout so it was an encouraging sign!
Fingers crossed to be getting Godzilla -1 this weekend, so far no listings. I am looking forward to a screening of Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis on Monday.
15:57 purple and green lines for Joker and Joker 2 box office run for its first 24 days. I see what you did there 😏
My stopwatch was counting down to this! I loved Venom 3 - in 4DX 😂
Good speech, Dan!
As a non American, that was a very thoughtful, clear and considered message about voting.
Great episode Dan.
Great episode, Dan!
