this is not your ordinary, regular man woman love. this is no ''sparks fly in the air'', ''awesome chemistry'', ''la la land'' story that we watch in movies and read in romance novels. this is a destructive relationship where not only the two people involved are ruining each other but also those around them. this is a story where one soul is calling out to the other in the midst of chaos, turmoil, violence and self destruction all because those two lost souls wanted to unite with one another. i dont know whether to feel overwhelmed by their relationship or feel unsettled.

      Agree.. very unsettling.
Not healthy. Edgar was a good man.
Heathcliff and Catherine had empath narcissist relationship. Trauma bondage.

@@shubhisharma4261 From what I can see they seem to be very misguided Twin Flames. I haven't read the book though or seen the whole movie. Just clips. I like parts of the relationship, but the TF relationship can play out much healthier and healing if they had let it. They let the fever and obsession get to them.
Twins will always cling to each other, but it doesn't have to be toxic.

Is it bad that this kind of relationship makes me feel giddy? It's so fiery and passionate...

Of course it’s not bad! There’s a reason Wuthering Heights is a classic. We can’t deny the irresistible pull we have toward intense love stories that are as destructive as they are passionate. It’s perfectly fine to have those fantasies or some strange fascination with how they play out in stories, it doesn’t mean you actually want a toxic abusive relationship.

I think it is. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to say there’s something wrong with you, but perhaps with your understanding of the story. I don’t know if you’ve read the book, but I believe it’s a classic because the writing and storytelling are amazing not because it’s a love story.
Wuthering Heights makes me think more of Dracula and Frankenstein than any kind of love story. It’s a story about what abuse can do to the innocent soul of a child.
The “love” portrayed in this story is manipulative, cruel, heartless, tormenting, and utterly and completely selfish. It is willing to make others suffer and to enjoy their pain. It’s a sick, disturbing thing. This kind of “love” is only self serving and can do nothing but hurt, cause pain, and bring destruction to everything that it touches( including itself).
The movies really do soften the story a lot. I’ve yet to see one that shows the sick, twisted lives these horrible people live. It’s a book that breaks your heart, that horrifies you, that frightens you, that puts before you a truly scary side of human nature. That’s why it’s a classic. It’s gothic literature at its finest. It’s a horror story, not a love story. It’s a masterpiece sentence by sentence, word for word. It’s a beautiful beast of a thing, but it’s certainly not a life anyone should want. It’s hell on earth to everyone involved.
You don’t want a love like that. Not if you want to make someone and be happy.

There is nothing nice or redeeming that came from Heathcliff''s and Cathy's relationship. It hurt and destroyed the people around them. In fact, it's not tell the end that there is a glimmer of happiness.

@@micahdordolle4154 I feel like a lot of people jump to explain to people why Cathy and Heathcliff's relationship is not ok... but you don't really need to do that. the entire book is about the destructive nature of their obsession with one another, the inhuman brutality and revenge and jealousy that Heathcliff wrought on everyone who came between himself and Cathy. That IS the story. But at the same time, part of that intense drama and emotion comes from the intense passion between the two leads. The book was infamous for the intensity of its emotions, its courseness, the taboo of the drama and heat.
so i don't think we should be too quick to discourage people from enjoying reading their relationship, since that's such a fundamental aspect of the book's appeal. And also, simply enjoying their relationship as a text does not mean that you glorify it or idolise it. i think we underestimate people's intelligence and discerning ability when we just assume that they think Cathy and Heathcliff are a positive romantic role model, since that has never been the case, ever since it was published 150 years ago, and I think EVERYONE who knows anything about the story knows that.
I don't think people who are familiar with the story would ever sincerely say 'I want a man like Heathcliff', because Heathcliff was a brute. They MIGHT say that they want a love like Cathy's and Heathcliff's, and by that they would be talking about the eternal bond that they shared, which let's be honest, we as humans deeply crave such profound connections with those we love. That is why the story is so enduringly popular - we keep coming back to that fascinating allure of the love between them. That doesn't automatically mean that we want to be in a destructive, abusive relationship, because no one wants that...
