Patrick, I know that being in a big losing streak sucks, but I just want to say that I admire your positive attitude and dedication to keep playing anyway. It's hard to keep enjoying the game even things aren't going well. Even if you don't hit your goal anytime soon, you're an inspiration.
Again, nothing wrong with the opening. After 11 moves you are +3.5. But three tactical oversights in the middle game cost you the game. Good analysis by the way. And although you beat this opponent previously, they are highly rated.
it's all about the rating fixation.....even in the title: "....until I reach a 2000 RATING"....if there was no rating visible and no goals for reaching certain numbers, one wouldn't get frustrated by losing and losing rating points. that pressure of HAVING TO perform to reach certain number is psychologically creating fears and barriers that get triggered during the game. I bet that if one played just for fun (without rating fixation), the performance would go up and be steady.
I find myself appreciating the short sections of talking prior to the games :) Great opening today, and an unfortunate tactical oversight. But you've got this, Patrick. We are here for the long game. It is all about learning, and then the rating will come eventually :)
Quick shout-out to @LearningwithDaniel4. Daniel has a similar daily-game-with-video TH-cam channel. I've been following both Patrick and Daniel for some time. Their styles are quite different, and Daniel plays a slower (15|10) time control; both are hugely instructive for me. (I'm rated a bit lower than both of them.) I swear, my chess has improved considerably since I've started my daily coffee-with-Patrick-and-Daniel routine! Many thanks to both of you guys for "putting it out there" every day.
There are so many games that you’re right on the cusp of walking away with it. It’s the finest of differences that are showing up in your current elo. Just keep learning and those games like these in which you are a hair’s breath away from dominating will start to go your way again. I believe it.
The last time you faced tozolon53 on April 10th, he was rated 1542. How did he improve so fast? What time controls does he play? Rapid: 869 Blitz: 513 Bullet: 0 Whereas for Patrick: Rapid: 458 Blitz: 2092 Bullet: 443
If you look at tozolon53's rating progression over ALL TIME, you will see that he was a solid 1800 player in 2019. So technically he didn't improve, he just had a drop recently which is normal for everyone. There is nothing wrong with playing different time controls once in a while as long as you can find enjoyment and something to learn from.
What the engine isn’t telling you… 12 h3 - Bxf6 is a little hard to see. The key is recognizing the attack on the g4 bishop that occurs by moving the knight on f3. The trade of bishops frees up g5 so this discovered attack can happen with check. 14 Bxf3 - You found the best move Bc4 but talked yourself out of it for fear of losing a pawn. If black takes the pawn you have a really strong attack. Don’t be afraid to lose material for a strong attack and force yourself to do the calculation. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
Patrick. Been watching your games since February 2024. I noticed that you loose on time a lot. I have learned that when you are spending a lot of time in one move, say 1 minute, just decide to play one move rather than spend so long when the 2 or 3 favorite moves have similar overall outcomes. Marcel
Since family and work considerations make getting a coach impractical, I suggest getting Artur Yusupov's book Build Up Your Chess 1. It has 34 chapters on various aspects of chess and each chapter has a test at the end with from 1 to 3 points for each question. You can find out which aspects you understand and which you need to work on. It's the next best thing to having a coach and you can use it at your leisure. I enjoy your channel very much and keep up the good work, you will get there.
When you have to choose a place for your knight at 9:04 . Always choose the square that isn´t threatened by a pawn. F5 is the best place because no pawn can expel your knight from there, the kinght could be living there rent free all the game and wait for the right time to jump and make a fork. Imagine if you could place your rook at d6 it is check mate. That is a plan, it doesn´t matter you are a piece down, try to sacrifice the other pieces as baits or distraction, put your knight at f5 and place your rook at d6 to check mate.
You should have developed your H rook to E1 before you began your attack. Also might have been better to have taken with your bishop, BxF3 rather than the pawn. Leaving black with isolated doubled pawn on the G file whereas you would still have a sold pawn structure. Then start attacking the isolated pawn.
You are afraid to exchange pieces. Even Magnus exchange early to simplify his position. Then, you put yourself under pressure and make mistakes. But the biggest problem is your confidence. You have to believe in your ability to win games.
why need to reverse? he is playing for fun...it's not like he gets put on electric chair if he fails to reverse. Again, this rating fixation and having to perform for some unknown reason, is like a mental disease :_)
@@XlogicXX and thats why he is setting himself up by creating this HAVING TO PERFORM to reach a certain rating. Again, this rating obsession is a downfall for many. When they see losing their points, they freak out and start playing worse. It's like with stock market. When people start losing money, they get emotional and start making wrong calls and keep on losing even more. It's a very basic psychological phenomenon. read some books, educate yourself little bit!
@ralphderkapitaen9875 for Pete's sake, can you go find something better to do with your time. Obviously we are here to watch a rating climb and hopefully learn/teach chess moves. What are you bloviating about?
Same issue again. Hopefully you’ll realize your issues aren’t in the opening. It is all board vision. When you had his king on e6, you only briefly considered an attack with your white bishop on c4. You didn’t notice his bishop was undefended if you moved your knight with check. Instead you went to your tendency to react and be defensive. That sometimes works for you if your opponent miscalculated and you end up better playing defense but practicing board vision (slowing down, examining for checks/captures all over) is going to help.
Being on you tube and getting lots of contradictory advice must be confusing. The defeat here was down to listening to the criticism of playing to slowly. In fact, the period when you got to 1550 was characterised by you taking your time in the opening. It doesn’t matter if your opponent has 5 minutes more on the clock if you are crushing them.
So as per yesterdays advice you lost not because of any opening study but lack of board vision, and tactics you do NOT need to spend time practicing openings .. nor adjusting your hat 😂
That's what adds to the confusion. In the mobile app, yes you are correct. But for the web version, hovering over the opponent's name shows THEIR record against you.

Very sad, that you did not even think before moving the king to b1. There were only 2 moves to consider and more than 7 minutes left.

I offered Patrick some free coaching. Doesn't seem like he was too interested! Good game today though. For sure a lot to learn.
@chesswithpatrick, take @myrtnh up on his offer, and record/post the coaching session! I'll bet other viewers would get a lot of value out of that.
What’s your rapid rating?
Around 2250

I worry about your chess journey more than my own one😅
Find the lion living inside of you Patrick. Strike fear in your opponents. Go for the head! Stop being the gazelle fearful and timid. Attack!!

Yo Patrick… you gave that one away bro!
Shocked how many people can’t understand how to read Patrick’s record against this guy but think they can provide chess advice.
Keep grinding Patrick.
There is a difference between how; it is shown on the mobile version vs. desktop. Probably where the confusion is

Patrick thinking that he's 3/3 against his opponent when he's actually 0/3 is a metaphor for something.
When he hovered the username it showed the opponent's record against Patrick. Patrick won 3 times before.
You're right. My mistake.

Tough game. Way to stay positive though. April showers bring may flowers
Another win in Tozolon haha. Keep going Patrick
After knight check King d2. Look at all the squares the king can move to. d2 attacks the knight.
It's called the Pirc, not the Pierce,
Pronounced way more closely to pierce than pirc

He finally got me!
😂😂😂 oh Patrick
Thx for doing this.
Patrick, what’s the make / model of your hats? Nike something
I don't think it matters the time controls, I think you need a regular rival who will trash talk you but also point out the holes in your games.😊
Good thing is once you hit rock bottom you can only go up from there.

"I've beating him 3 times!" It's 0/0/3 Patrick lol
Patrick won 3 times before, the record showing is from the opponent's perspective

Dude, you should train, not play everyday, so you begin to see things
First comment! Rooting for you, buddy!
0/0/3 means you lost 3 games against him
