Sampling Jazz (Bill Evans) with the Akai MPC One RETRO & guitar pedals

  • Just got the new Akai MPC One Retro. I've sampled a Bill Evans track here and programmed a rough lofi hip-hop beat to improv over. The workflow seems quite intuitive to someone who has never owned an MPC before but I've only just scratched the surface.
    I've run the output of the MPC One Retro through a bunch of guitar pedals (Chase Bliss Thermae and Mood, Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water, Dr Scientist Dusk and the EHX Mainframe) for some bitcrushing).
    I named the song "As Dreams Become Memories". You can stream it here: linkto.nathanhuiyi.com/dreams...

    I'm so pissed youtube didn't show me your channel before
    I love everything about this video
    The idea of using guitar pedals this way, like if you were using outboard gear but way cooler
    I love Chase Bliss
    I love the aesthetic
    I'm about to watch more of your content, keep up the good work!

      Wow thanks so much! I'm a guitarist at heart so using pedals was a natural evolution for me. Thanks for checking out my music!

    I dig that pedal rack setup. You might want to get some analog phaser in there.

      what phaser would you recommend? that is something i don't have!

    • @middle_pickup
      @middle_pickup ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NathanHuiYi if you're going to use it on drums, I recommend something with a resonance control like a Boss PH-1r or PH-2. The current PH-3 model isn't bad either, but not my preference. Another great option at the moment is Warm Audio's jet phaser clone. It's $100 at sweetwater right now. I think they're about to drop that model. It's a big pedal though, so that might be a concern for you.

    • @NathanHuiYi
      @NathanHuiYi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So sorry for the late reply. Thanks! I use the RME Fireface UCX II. I recommend anything by RME. The drivers are very stable, very low latency. The totalmix software it comes with was a bit confusing for me at first, but I've come to realise it's extremely powerful and useful!

  • @saluddiaz

    Hello, thanks for the video, I did enjoy! Can you tell me how you route all pedals to the MPC One? Can you record the effects per pedal as you like? I’m interested in building a set with my pedals and MPC one and other devices thanks a lot!

    • @NathanHuiYi
      @NathanHuiYi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for dropping by and commenting! I run the outputs of the MPC One into an Allen and Heath mixer. I've then run an effects send from that into a JCR Radial reamp box and from there into the guitar pedals. The guitar pedals then run into my USB audio interface (RME Fireface UC). This won't allow you to record the effects per pedal

    • @NathanHuiYi

      An alternative simpler setup is simply the (left) mono output from the MPC One into your guitar pedal. It will work, but some guitar pedals might sound very different and become distorted.

      @@NathanHuiYi thanks for the quick reply! I’m really wanting to essentially just add some life to my samples by putting them through some effects but then quickly have them right back in the mpc to resample. I like the idea of chopping the effected sample for the main progression

    Can you please explain the pedal signal chain into the MPC?

    • @NathanHuiYi

      Sure thing - I've run the outputs of the MPC One into an Allen and Heath mixer. I've then run an effects send from that into a JCR Radial reamp box and from there into the guitar pedals. The output of the guitar pedals is then recorded into an RME Fireface UC.

      Hey Tyler! I'll try to when I have time, but in the mean time, I'm happy to explain it. I simply plugged the output from the Akai MPC One into a JCR Radial re-amp box, and then plugged that straight into the guitar pedals! Heres a link to the JCR Radial www.radialeng.com/product/jcr

    • @NathanHuiYi
      @NathanHuiYi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely it's dependent on your preferences and what kind of sound you want. A lot of effects can be created easily and sound great digitally in the box. Personally, I think analogue chorus and vibrato is a very unique sound that doesn't sound quite the same with digital plugins. So I would recommend something like the Walrus Audio Julianna - it also has stereo inputs and outputs which go well with the MPC one
