the insane preheating begins after insane amount of preparation to get to this point! to lots of air arc gouging,grinding welding heavy lifting with crane in our engineeringworkshop.
the final part of this repair shows a stack more tlstrengthen plates, then heat treating and also 120 ton boring machine and giant lathe, then I get to go see it on site crushing rock after it has been returned to work. so make sure subscribe if you want to see the final part thanks guys.

I keep losing the sense of scale with this piece and thinkingnthay this thing is Bloomin huge., the large volume of weld wire going into filling the cracks and voids. Awesome to watch.

I'm a recently retired Boilermaker, and worked on some very large repairs on mining equipment like draglines and shovels. But that crusher kinda scared me a bit.

Awesome. I'm a retired diesel mechanic. 3yrs tech school for welding while in high school 5yrs navy seabees as a steel worker. I had some big stuff to weld but that was awesome with pre and post heating for stress and shrinkage. God bless brother!!!!

Part 2 was definitely worth the wait Alistair. What an absolute beast of a job, looking forward to part 3. The scale of the job is mind boggling, some of those gaps were canyons. The concentration, the stress and the heat of the job was palpable. Hats off to you sir, cracking job!
On video, you lose sight of the scale of the piece, until a known object comes into shot. It's 😊a bloody big crack on a bloody big project piece.

I greatly enjoy your channel ! OUTSTANDING THNX / when I was 15 my parents got me a 200 amp buzz box, I proceeded to weld everything in site together much to their dismay. 50 years later a little better but much wiser.

Holy moly I was watching the setup and the preheating steps, and was thinking how you were actually gonna get into those pockets to physically weld? I mean, essentially after the preheating with the space heaters and torch, those "oven spaces" must have been hot enough to bake a chicken! And the extended torch, wasn't just a godsend, it was key! You're truly a testament to work ethic. I can't imagine too many people on the planet who would sit all day in front of an open oven door, and perform this methodical work. You give us all inspiration for whenever we may whine about the difficulties of our jobs. Thanks for sharing this!!!

Damn dude! One hell of a challenging repair. Just on the preheat alone. Must have been 7-9k US in consumables, not including electricity. Wow. Amazing work.

Never did heavy welding - diesel equipment collision repair, this stuff makes it look like paper. Fascinating job.
I am not a welder, but i know art when I see it. The welding beads are truly works of art by a very skilled welder. This is an indication the man loves his work.
Thanks for posting this part 2. I am not a pro welder and did not know you could fix this. You also explained some of the metallurgy involved and i had no idea of the complexity of welding this beast. Blessings from east Texas
Thankfully it's cast steel, iron can't take the abuse these jaw crushers take, day in and day out.

I used to use those gouging rods sharpened like a pencil to tack stainless steel benches together lol. Funny seeing them used for their intended purpose
Re: Greasy chains. Simply say to yourself. "It is difficult to soar with Eagles when you work with Turkeys." That has always helped my mental attitude in those kinds of situations.
Found your channel the other day when Part 1 popped up in my recommended. As someone whos looking at getting into welding as a trade, I can sit though hours of this footage at a time. This is the most epic welding repair I have ever seen. Improvisation is the key. You don’t get tunnel vision or get stuck on process. 👍

Welding is not taught in any school in the U.S. anymore. Great work, I enjoyed watching this work. I worked as a cert welder and only worked 20 years and retired. Right of high school the last year it was taught. The teacher got cert for government jobs for me. Worked hard, paid very well and now living life how I want to be.
I’m 67 yr old retired certified welder/fabricator. This job will try your skills and patience! Don’t walk up on me talking crap asking why it’s taking so long! My neck shoulders low back knees wrist aches patience wearing thin I’m tired! Don’t start nothing and there won’t be nothing I’m doing the best I can! 😅. I’ve been there and done that. I. Never welded anything in my life, except for some coat hangers I used to repair an old Ford Falcon unibody belonging to my Dad that I wrecked and it held😂

Adding blankets around the non-welded parts of the piece may help immensely with retaining the preheat.

Absolutely superb, methodical and top job. You are a powerhouse of patience, I would imagine part of you saying ‘what the hell am I doing’? And the other side saying ‘you can do this, you have done this’ & Many brick walls in between. The prep and calculation is certainly the most important part of the process - Certainly a big tribute to your skill, I do believe there are only a few people in the world that possess the necessary skills in the different sectors of engineering - I hear many people constantly saying ‘that ls a dying trade and not many people are continuing in it - Id imagine not many people would have took that job on 👍👍👍👍👌

My daughter has decided to make welding her career she works at a welding shop in town and she tells me about the work she does but it’s difficult to understand what she is talking about having no experience with it. I am very glad I have found your channel because you do an excellent job of explaining not only what you are doing but why it has to be done that way. Thank you for your content. It really gives me an insight to what my daughter is doing and helps me to be an active listener when she discusses her job. I really respect the job that you do it’s not one for the uneducated. I had no idea just how much planning went into a welding repair and the scope of knowledge necessary to do it right. Hats off to you and your skills!
Awesome to see you trying to become an even better active listener. I've met maybe 5-10 active listeners in my entire lifetime on earth. They're so important for a civilized society. At my job I don't even talk much anymore. There's no reason to. Everybody there is just trying to one-up everybody or just waiting for their turn to speak.

Good listeners learn from others if they weed out the bs to get useful info. People that only talk do not gain and rarely provide much. As they talk down to people.

I recently subscribed 2 welder fabber as im a heavy plant fitter and was impressed with his work,but you are ABSOLUTELY NEXT LEVEL M8 ,i have in the past spent hours gouging out cracks and stick welding them back up and its soooo sooo time consuming and hard graft but the repair you have done here is the biggest i have ever seen!! I saw it at the start and thought how the hell is he gunna repair this where it still has structural integrity and u have shows utter determination and pure skill i hope your boss appreciates you!!! Just a staggering amount of work! I've been a hobby machinist and welder for years and you used more wire in that one large crack on the back than I have my entire life. I hope you gave yourself a vacation after this monstrous job. Well done! There aren't many people in the world who can do what you do and you should take pride in that!

Yep…. Either bending over or squatting and sunburning your shins. Aggravating the arthritis and admiring your work even if nobody will ever see it to appreciate talent.
@@lorenrasmussen338 kneeling down on concrete or steel is a sure fire way to get arthiritis , it chills the bones in your knees , elbows and hands.
If i am doing a long job in one position i cheat and make up foam supports or lay boards to reduce fatigue .
Watching you do this job gives me a deep, warm, fuzzy feeling of contentment that comes from knowing that I don't have to do that any more.

I feel for the elbows buddy. Spent three weeks filling nail holes, sanding and painting base board, and trim in a new house and my knees, elbows were shot along with other parts after that and all on concrete. This almost 70 year old don’t have two many project left in like that. Also brother is almost sixty and welding for over 40 years on navy ships, sea going barges, heavy equipment and eyes and body of his is just about shot. Very nice job by the way. Very nice.

Great job working on this beast! I really like how you show the full footage of getting the job done and not cutting down the video time to a quick 20-30 min montage. I'm not a welder but my dad did a good amount of welding on our farm when we were kids.. I love watching this stuff and you explaining the complexity of working big jobs, the pre and post heat treatments to ensure the stresses in the metal don't tear it apart. I've heard you compare yourself to Kurtis from CEE and ICWeld .. you are all experts in my mind and you have different specialties that are unique to the type of work that you do.
