Oh this video is awesome thank you! Im on a ELA journey, diving deep into making their ELA well rounded. More so thinking about my third grader! But great stuff here thanks!
Great video! You always have such a meet your kids needs outlook while balancing budget concerns and also not just changing curriculum 5 times a school year. That is something that drives me crazy to see so much. Do you have plans for your 7 year old and the direction you will go with ELA? I have a 7 year old boy who teeters on 2nd and 3rd grade. He also has ADHD. We are currently using core knowledge listen and learn and the skills strand. We have issues with his focus during the more history based knowledge units but with some advice you had given and some changes i made its going better. I really love the background knowledge with that. Skills has been great for him and he reads well. However i feel the spelling is lacking and the writing aspects just are not working for him. We started grammar galaxy this year. It is a story based grammar program and he adores that. In actual third grade i want to introduce more ELA but Im not sure what to go with for spelling and writing mostly. Do you haveall about spelling videos on your channel? I know you have shown closer looks at some curriculum on your channel.
I am currently researching what to do with ELA for my 7yr old for next year. She won’t be ready for CK 4th grade so I am trying to look for alternative options. I still really like All About Spelling and will definitely be trying that with her in the near future. For grammar I like the combination of Michael Clay Thompson and First Language Lessons now but I will definitely look into grammar galaxy. That’s one I haven’t checked out yet. Writing I am still trying to narrow down.
Awesome video ! This was very helpful and explained so well. Do you have any suggestions for preschool learning letters and sounds? I was looking into the Letter of the week curriculum, but as you said, it is a lot to put together to print. Also , big fan of explode the code as well. I wish I would have stuck with it longer with my oldest. He is a great reader but that’s because of the memorization of sight words school taught. I feel like that didn’t not give him the foundation he would need to help with words he may know while reading or even spelling. I will definitely be adding explode the Code and All About Reading.
I pulled my son from school at the end of Grade 1 and basically re-teach him everything in grade 1. Maybe I am a bit extreme but I basically feel like he gained very little from school…..
Have you looked into EIW? It has helped my 2nd grader with sentences and the proper way to write. It has a lot of practice questions. My 2nd grader is doing level 1. It’s helping her confidence in writing. Love your videos; we seem similar in our homeschooling ways. We even use similar curriculum. You seem like a very caring person. It’s nice to see people like you. Thank you for your time.
IEW focuses on writing although they do have Fix it grammar which you can buy separately or with the program. MCT focuses on grammar but in a way that helps you better understand how sentences are structured. I do believe the other levels in MCT get into writing but my daughter is only in the first book of the 2nd level right now.

Yay! I’m so psyched for this one! Thanks, Michelle! Grabbing some coffee now to settle in with it. 😊
It was SO helpful. I’ll be watching again and taking notes! Thanks again for making this one!
I’m glad it was helpful!
Great video! Thank you for sharing

Sorry I don’t have any suggestions for learning letters. It’s an area I haven’t researched a lot because I’ve used the same resource for all my kids.

When my oldest left the public school and came home for 3rd grade I had to completely reteach her 2nd grade math.

I have it on my list to look into. I appreciate your kind words!
Hey! I have a Kindergartener, but had a question about IEW and MCT. What is the difference? It seems maybe IEW is writing and MCT is grammar?
