Thank you for directing people to support the band. Tarja's Finnish accent is very pronounced. Thus the interesting enunciation on some of the vowel sounds. Tarja was a very operatic classical style vocalist and unique in her style for the time. This was from the final show with Tarja in 2005.
Yesterday both Tarja and Marko performed this song on scene again after 18 years. You can find videos on TH-cam. Of course, voices are not as great as two decades ago, but still an epic and emotional moment for Nightwish fans.

Tarja's pronunciation while singing is influenced not only by her native Finnish language, but also by her operatic studies at both the Sibeleus Academy and Germany's Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. It would take a vocal coach with considerable European experience to explain all of what's going on, and which sounds emanate from which source... I think there are a few who have tried (Elisabeth at Charismatic Voice, I believe). Anyway. I find if I tried to dissect the sound of Nightwish too much, I get lost in the theory and for get to enjoy it. Nightwish is truely the finnish pride. They are the most known finnish band worldwide and i grew up with their music. I miss the original members like Tarja but the band is still on fire. True nostalgia.

Welcome to the original singer/co-founder of the band Tarja Turunen!!! She is the reason NW is the band you know today as it was her amazing rich dark classical vocals that brought Tuomas to help create the genre of symphonic metal!!! A lot of the songs you have heard Floor sing were actually Tarja era songs. The contrast between Marko's rough metal vocals and Tarja's classical vocals created pure magic in my humble opinion! As you said, Tarja and Marko's voice blend very well together and there are numerous examples of this. Also, if you'd like a taste of even earlier Nightwish, you should look at the "from wishes to eternity" dvd. That was even before Marko joined the band. Also, Tarja's style is quite different from Floor. Tarja is actually a classically trained vocalist whereas Floor has a more metal/rock style. That kinda gave the early Nightwish a more unique sound that some of us preferred. Also Tarja is Finnish, so the "J" makes an "I" or "y" like sound. So, it's actually pronounced more like Taria.
Tarja is awesome. Since her voice reminded you of a siren, you can check out The Siren from the same concert. Or really just about any other song with her. You can't go wrong with Nightwish.
Tarja, our dark angel. I love this original Nightwish lineup and the sound. It's hard to believe that Tarja is even better in his solo career than she was in Nightwish. I love her work and I love those old Nightwish ones. And I miss Marko in Nightwish as well. I really hope they do an encore duet together during their concerts this Saturday in Switzerland.
The Siren from this End of an Era concert is a must do given your frequent reference to Homer’s Odyssey. “Who tied my hands to the wheel?” Tuomas got to hear his Siren sing and ended up shipwrecked. Fortunately for us his odyssey has continued.
This in the grand version of this classic song and play tuned by NW for their heavier style. This lady is naturally Tarja who is the original singer and founding member of this best band there is. With her NW formulated their style and concept plus did five albums - more than they have done with her later replacements and substitutes together. At this time they had grown from a school band (1995) up to leader of the genre globally (2005). Marco sings and plays the role of Phantom so well with her. Check the Demo done in 1996 to get versatile perspective for your later reactions and comments and do different NW material too. There is plenty of it and all are great.
Love what she does. Tarja is Tarja. She is incredible in all she tries her hand at. Nothing to argue with without her Nightwish was not the same. They never could be. Better, worse, the same? I love watching the reactions on this amazing performance. This two guys together were awesome. Marko's voice sounds so menacing in the part of the phantom and the way their voices manage to blend so good despite being so different is astonishing.
Floor is more of a pop singer with a great range, while Tarja (Tar-e-ah, somewhat) trained in opera in Germany while Tuomas and friends were fullfilling thier consription duties. When they got together, it created the first band of its sound. Many copied it. Tuomas is a great songwriter, Tarja not so much, but she has been a great success throughout the years. I think some of her best work is on her Beauty and the beat tour with her solo band percussionist Mike Teranna. The cover of "Swanheart" by them transcribed for orchestra will make you cut onions. Tarja has stronger accent than for example Floor (of course Dutch is lightyears closer to English than Finnish) and people often made fun of it. But when audience starts crying on your opening line it hardly matters.
Pretty much all languages between India and Iceland are Indo-European. But Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian are not. Rootswise Finnish is as close to English than Japanese.
Nothing to do with that thing. Slavic and forinstance french languages are in the indoeuropian family and their accents are much stronger than finnish speaking ppl.
NW was formed by Tarja Tuomas and Emppu, 3 HS kids from Kitee, a town of under 5000. In 1996. She was the lead singer till 2005. NW had Annette Olzon replace her in abt 08 for a couple of years. In 2013 Floor joined. The band has different vibes fr act 1 thru act 3 w/each singer. Speaking of Sirens. There is a Tarja/Marko song with NW called the Siren. It is fantastic. Finnish is one of the hardest languages going bet it and English. I know being dual US/Finn. to Its Tar-e-ya. And its Marco Hee-ta-lah.
The first time I seen Tarja and Marko sing The Phantom of the Opera it blew my mind. I didn´t even like this song before I heard Nightwish do it. It was truly magnificent. They have been so fortunate to have such vocal talent through their history. And I never thought I would ever be so captivated by a vocalist as I am of Floor. Her voice is so beautiful and stage presence is otherworldly. I literally feel like I have won the musical lottery to have discovered Nightwish :D
I know she's doing some shows with Marko so perhaps they are doing the phantom, I do like this version best by Nightwish Tarjas got a great operatic voice, I do think overall Floor fits the band better, but no disrespect to Tarja who is a powerhouse herself

Marko is such a beastly Phantom! The J in Tarja is pronounced like y - "Tarya". Like Jukka, the drummer, is "Yookka". Sometimes Tarja's enunciation was not correct English - it became prominent towards the end of her time with Nightwish (not here but in other songs e.g. "Wish I Had An Angel"), perhaps contributing to the feeling of growing distance between her & Tuomas - which came to a head at the end of this very gig.
If you think she sounded like a siren, you may really want to listen to "The Siren" from this same concert (End of an era). Also a duet between Tarja and Marko, and very much centred on the myth of Ulysses and the sirens ^^.

I was reticent about watching this as I really detest the deliberate comparison between Tarja and Floor's vocals, but you handled it well and I am glad I clicked on it. Tarja left the band directly after this performance back in 2005 and after an exhaustive audition process, Swedish singer Anette Olzon was hired as her replacement. When Floor was called to help the band out on it's US tour in 2012, she and Tarja were already friends, and Floor was replacing Anette fully seven years after her old friends' departure. The rivalry that then grew between various factions of the fanbase was unedifying and at times downright ugly. That period of enmity seems to have passed, but there are some reactors who still seem to want to re-ignite the factional discourse. I was concerned that you were doing the same, but I was wrong. Tarja was a founder with Tuomas and Emppu in 96. Jakku joined 97, Samï too. Fired in 2001. Replaced by Marko. Tarja fired on Oct 22, 2005 after this show. Annette 20007 -2011. Floor 2011 to present. Anette is Swedish. Floor is Dutch. Marko left in 2021. Jukka quit drumming in 2014. Floor was a guest and planned to carry on for Anette who was pregnant for the South American dates. She went into labour early and Floor took over in Salt Lake City. After the tour and firing Anette they offered Floor full membership. She first went to her friend Tarja for her blessings to join. It was granted the two ladies are good friends to this day.
World now never be the same without Marco and Tarja (pron. Tar-ya) and Jukka... I like Nightwish so much. I love Floor. But someone song was much better with Tarja, Some is better with Floor (like Ghost Love Score). But if you loose bassist and male singer, female singer and the drummer (who is underrated, it will never be the same band again). Toumas have great talent for making music. But its not the same... Floor is good but Tarja for sure can hold her own and has songs where I think she is better as they were written to her voice and range. Also Anette had her place as studio artist and I do like the albums from her as well. But Anette is like a brown bird in a rain when she is on a stage. Her voice never was powerful enough like Tarja's and Floor's. Still very good. So you should really compare all three and keep on mind all are very different. For sure Floor does sound very good and that is lot also because of sound equipment and sound technician that Tarja didn't have as good. I have listened some of the Nightwish/Floors studio albums and personally I'm not happy. They are not taking the full potential of Floors voice and it is often just at the back where the band is not supporting it.
Tarja is a specialist in classical singing and studied there more than Floor. A comparison to the Allrounder Floor is therefore a bit unfair. Since Tuomas composes in a very versatile way, the all-rounder Floor suits Nightwish better for me. Also, not everyone gets along with the "F* Y*" sound of Tarja's voice. There is no Floor vs Tarja on this. While I’m overall a bigger fan of Floor in Nightwish, this performance is unparalleled! Floor’s version, in Beste Zangers, is the traditional version with Henk Port. And that has its place. It is also cool that Floor and Henk recently redid this version with Nightwish…….. but it’s not as good. Partly because of Marco, but also that it just worked better with Tarja’s pure opera voice.

I love watching the reactions on this amazing performance. This two guys together were awesome. Marko's voice sounds so menacing in the part of the phantom and the way their voices manage to blend so good despite being so different is astonishing.
Tarja will always be my favorite.. I see she and Marko are performing together again outside of NW
Floor is more of a pop singer with a great range, while Tarja (Tar-e-ah, somewhat) trained in opera in Germany while Tuomas and friends were fullfilling thier consription duties. When they got together, it created the first band of its sound. Many copied it. Tuomas is a great songwriter, Tarja not so much, but she has been a great success throughout the years. I think some of her best work is on her Beauty and the beat tour with her solo band percussionist Mike Teranna. The cover of "Swanheart" by them transcribed for orchestra will make you cut onions. Search Beauty and the Beat "Swanheart" .

Tarja has stronger accent than for example Floor (of course Dutch is lightyears closer to English than Finnish) and people often made fun of it.
But when audience starts crying on your opening line it hardly matters.
Pretty much all languages between India and Iceland are Indo-European.
But Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian are not. Rootswise Finnish is as close to English than Japanese.
Nothing to do with that thing. Slavic and forinstance french languages are in the indoeuropian family and their accents are much stronger than finnish speaking ppl.
NW was formed by Tarja Tuomas and Emppu, 3 HS kids from Kitee, a town of under 5000. In 1996. She was the lead singer till 2005. NW had Annette Olzon replace her in abt 08 for a couple of years. In 2013 Floor joined. The band has different vibes fr act 1 thru act 3 w/each singer.
Speaking of Sirens. There is a Tarja/Marko song with NW called the Siren. It is fantastic.
Finnish is one of the hardest languages going bet it and English. I know being dual US/Finn. to Its Tar-e-ya. And its Marco Hee-ta-lah.
The first time I seen Tarja and Marko sing The Phantom of the Opera it blew my mind. I didn´t even like this song before I heard Nightwish do it. It was truly magnificent. They have been so fortunate to have such vocal talent through their history. And I never thought I would ever be so captivated by a vocalist as I am of Floor. Her voice is so beautiful and stage presence is otherworldly. I literally feel like I have won the musical lottery to have discovered Nightwish :D

The entire End of An Era concert is Nightwish in their prime.
Marko is such a beastly Phantom! The J in Tarja is pronounced like y - "Tarya". Like Jukka, the drummer, is "Yookka". Sometimes Tarja's enunciation was not correct English - it became prominent towards the end of her time with Nightwish (not here but in other songs e.g. "Wish I Had An Angel"), perhaps contributing to the feeling of growing distance between her & Tuomas - which came to a head at the end of this very gig.
If you think she sounded like a siren, you may really want to listen to "The Siren" from this same concert (End of an era). Also a duet between Tarja and Marko, and very much centred on the myth of Ulysses and the sirens ^^.

Glad you’re enjoying Nightwish. This was my introduction to them. Love the classical singing going with and also clashing with the harsh Marko sound. But really all of singers are great. Each era and album is a little different. It’s a fun band

I was reticent about watching this as I really detest the deliberate comparison between Tarja and Floor's vocals, but you handled it well and I am glad I clicked on it. Tarja left the band directly after this performance back in 2005 and after an exhaustive audition process, Swedish singer Anette Olzon was hired as her replacement. When Floor was called to help the band out on it's US tour in 2012, she and Tarja were already friends, and Floor was replacing Anette fully seven years after her old friends' departure. The rivalry that then grew between various factions of the fanbase was unedifying and at times downright ugly. That period of enmity seems to have passed, but there are some reactors who still seem to want to re-ignite the factional discourse. I was concerned that you were doing the same, but I was wrong. Tarja was a founder with Tuomas and Emppu in 96. Jakku joined 97, Samï too. Fired in 2001. Replaced by Marko. Tarja fired on Oct 22, 2005 after this show. Annette 20007 -2011. Floor 2011 to present. Anette is Swedish. Floor is Dutch. Marko left in 2021. Jukka quit drumming in 2014. Floor was a guest and planned to carry on for Anette who was pregnant for the South American dates. She went into labour early and Floor took over in Salt Lake City. After the tour and firing Anette they offered Floor full membership. She first went to her friend Tarja for her blessings to join. It was granted the two ladies are good friends to this day.

But someone song was much better with Tarja, Some is better with Floor (like Ghost Love Score). But if you loose bassist and male singer, female singer and the drummer (who is underrated, it will never be the same band again). Toumas have great talent for making music. But its not the same...
Try to listening hole concert with Tarja from Helsinki 2005 "End of an Era"... The last concert with Tarja... For me is the best concert from Nightwish. This video is part of that...

When Tarja quit, i quit listen Nightwish.
Floor is good but Tarja for sure can hold her own and has songs where I think she is better as they were written to her voice and range. Also Anette had her place as studio artist and I do like the albums from her as well. But Anette is like a brown bird in a rain when she is on a stage. Her voice never was powerful enough like Tarja's and Floor's. Still very good. So you should really compare all three and keep on mind all are very different. For sure Floor does sound very good and that is lot also because of sound equipment and sound technician that Tarja didn't have as good. I have listened some of the Nightwish/Floors studio albums and personally I'm not happy. They are not taking the full potential of Floors voice and it is often just at the back where the band is not supporting it.
I personally love Floor era of Nightwish but there is some of their pieces that works best with Tarja (+Marko) and this is one of those.

Tarja is a specialist in classical singing and studied there more than Floor. A comparison to the Allrounder Floor is therefore a bit unfair. Since Tuomas composes in a very versatile way, the all-rounder Floor suits Nightwish better for me. Also, not everyone gets along with the "F* Y*" sound of Tarja's voice.
Marko is a unique phantom and does the song so well.

There is no Floor vs Tarja on this. While I’m overall a bigger fan of Floor in Nightwish, this performance is unparalleled! Floor’s version, in Beste Zangers, is the traditional version with Henk Port. And that has its place. It is also cool that Floor and Henk recently redid this version with Nightwish…….. but it’s not as good. Partly because of Marco, but also that it just worked better with Tarja’s pure opera voice.
