  • Partitions divide countries, friendships find a way
    (Use captions to translate the film in 9 languages including French, Malayalam and Urdu)
    The India-Pakistan partition in 1947 separated many friends and families overnight. A granddaughter in India decides to surprise her grandfather on his birthday by reuniting him with his childhood friend (who is now in Pakistan) after over 6 decades of separation, with a little help from Google Search.

    We've brought this idea to life in a short video with the backdrop of the #partition of India, showing how human passion and hope can overcome time and borders. In this story, a woman in India reunites her grandfather with his childhood friend (who is now in Pakistan) following six decades of separation with a little help from Google. We hope this is a reflection of the many stories of #reunion. If you find it moving, share it-and tell us your own story in the comments. #GoogleReunion

    What's real and what's popular might be different. When popularly an Indian can only hate a Pakistani, but in reality, I don't know how many Indians would have felt like crying watching this Ad. We are real when we are alone, nothing to show off, nothing to hide. Most of the popular emotions are made up.

    I live in punjab pakistan my grandfather told me many stories of his hindu and sikh friends.....

  • @mharoonahmed
    @mharoonahmed 10 ปีที่แล้ว +359

    My father once told about his old friends. He had a childhood friend from Hindu community in Pakistani Punjab before Indo-pak partition. My father does not remember his original name but everyone used to call him Kaka Singh. My grandfather and Kaka singh's father were very good friends as well.
    After the partition, Kaka's singh family migrated to India and they gave keys of their house to my grandfather before leaving.They told my grandfather to take care of their house perhaps if they could return in 5-10 years, and in case, return is not possible, they can claim ownership of their property.
    Kaka's singh family however did keep in touch with my family for atleast 10-15 years. My father joined Pakistan Air Force, and surprisingly, kaka singh father told my grandfather that his son has also joined Indian Air Force. Perhaps two good friends did fought with each other indirectly in 65 or 71 wars.
    Kaka singh got married first and they sent wedding invitation to my grandfather. Similarly, when my father got married, my grandfather sent invitation on the other side.
    After that, no communication happened between the two families. My father is now Mash Allah 75 years old but he doesn't know, whether his childhood friend Kaka singh is still there somewhere in India.

      আমি বলেছি "1947 partition is a cruelest part of indian history" আমি বলেছি এইটা অনেক নিষ্ঠুর ছিল কিন্তু আমি বলিনি যে এই বিভাজনের প্রয়োজন ছিল না। হ্যাঁ ১৯৪৭ সালে আমরা মানে মুসলমানরা স্বাধীন হয়েছি। সেই দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে এইটা আমাদের জন্য খুব ভাল একটা জিনিস। কিন্তু আমার জানা মতে এই বিভাজনের ফলে দাঙ্গায় ১৫-২০ লক্ষ মানুষ নিহত হয়েছিল। যার বেশির ভাগই ছিল মুসলমান। তাছাড়া এতে প্রায় ১ কোটি মানুষ বাস্তুচ্যুত হয়েছিল। এই দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে দেখলে এইটা খুবই নিষ্ঠুর ছিল। আর আপনাকে বলে রাখি আমি মুসলমান এবং আমি বাংলাদেশি জাতীয়তাবাদে বিশ্বাসী। সুতরাং বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা সার্বভৌমত্ব বিরধী কথা বলার প্রশ্নই উঠে না। এইটা আপনার বুঝার ভুল ছিল। আশা করি বুঝতে পেরেছেন আর আমি মনে করে এই নিয়ে বিদেশীদের সামনে দুই স্বাদেশির ঝগড়া করা উচিত না।

    Only those who have migrated from Pakistan can really understand the real essence of this ad.
    My grandfather came to India after partition. When the news of partition broke, locals muslims, who were very close to my grandfather and other relatives, promised that they will protect us...save us. They did the same. My grandparents came to India safely. Initially visa process was very easy. My grandfather's best friend (a muslim) came to meet him. He cried when he saw his friend and kids living in a refugee colony. He used to visit frequently until the visa law became very strict. Then, they all used to send letters and dryfruits etc.
    For me this ad is believable...... and I don't bother what entire Pakistan thinks or entire India believes.

    • @Sayan445
      @Sayan445 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's very true. My grandparents moved to India from East Pakistan (Now Bangladesh) shortly before partition before the riots could fully break out. The neighbors and local muslims were very helpful and supportive. We still have people we know there. Very believable.
      I guess it's all about our perceptions and what kind of human beings we are, regardless of our religion, community, cast and creed :)

    The shop in the first part of the ad is an actual trophy shop in Chandni Chowk. It was setup pre-independence, and is still running to this day (touchwood). I recently had the pleasure to have business with them. Its a family run shop, they told me about it's history and how this Google Ad was shot there. The name of the shop is Ram Sarup Jain Jewellers. The name has "Jewellers" in it because it started as a jewellery shop but they shifted to trophies when the English government needed trophies for it's employees. It has a very rich history. Lucky to have been there.

He is in heaven right now, but had he been alive I would have definetly taken this step to atleast make a call across the border and made him talk to someone from there. Google do play a very vital role in our lives.

    Thank you Google! For making a thought provoking ad....which is more of a sentiment than a commercial! My maternal grand dad migrated from Ajmer to Lahore. He used to tell me about his childhood friend who used to live just adjacent Khwaja Sahab's dargah. I wish they both could have reunited :( he passed away 10 years back..... which is why I burst into tears watching this ad. Made all my grand dad memories refreshed.... THANK YOU Google Inc. for an advertisement with a human touch! Hats off to the team who created it!

    2022 - I heard stories from my grandparents and their dream of visiting their birthplaces, villages in India, at least just once. They died with their dream and left some of that in our eyes; in our generation, people like us who had seen India through their eyes have a dream to visit the birthplaces of their grandparents; just once.
    May we be able to travel freely across the border. May the peace have its way between the countries. Love from Pakistan!

    The old man from the Pakistani sweet shop is Mr. M S Sathyu, a very senior director and theatre personality. He had directed "Garam Hava" in 1973, one of the first and only films that highlighted the plight of Muslims in India post-partition. Interestingly, he is a brahmin hindu from Mysore (Karnataka, India).
    Ha has also directed several plays. One of my first plays in Mumbai was for him, called "Moteram". He is exactly like how he is in the ad. The smile, the walk, the look.. Sathyu sir, respect!

    I am from Azerbaijan. In WW2 the father of my grandfather had been captured by german troops. From that time no one heard about his name and no one knew what happened to him there, until my father decided to find him. Later, we found out that he got freed after the war ended and he went to Turkey. Although he wanted to come back to his country, Turkish government did not let him to do so, because all prisoners were killed by paranoid soviet Russia. He stayed there and years later married again. His oldest daughter told us the whole story. Her name was Jevahir, the father of my grandfather named her after his wife in Azerbaijan. And his surname was Yetimoglu (Son of orphan in both turkish and azeri). He used to be called like that back in Azerbaijan by his friends. When my father searched for Jevahir in hope of finding someone he found Jevahir Yetimoglu. He immediately realized that she is his grandfathers daughter. We travelled to Turkey to visit them, they told us everything about his life, thoughts and acts. Unfortunately, he died 5 years before the fall of SSR. Otherwise he could have seen his children..

    I rarely comment on videos, but I had to with this. I'm an Indian-Buddhist, but my best friend is a Pakistani-Muslim (we're both born and live in Britain). We're literally like brothers and we know each others family. We celebrate and dine together during Eid, Christmas, Diwali and New Years too. We always talk about how we'd be like when we're old along with other members of our lil gang, and this video reminded me of this and I couldn't help but feel emotional. This is probably the reason why I have a deep mis-trust for politicians and nationalism, cos they eventually lead to dividing people more than they should. Hopefully, a day will come when not just Pakistanis and Indians, but humans in general can let hostility go for the better and let friendship, support and love flourish. A lot more can be done if we all got a long.

      Very true, as long as this border remains, as long as the parties throw dirt at the opponent, as long as people don't see through the artificial partition, we will forever be in disharmony. The voice of ordinary Indians and Pakistanis hardly influence politics, rather it's the opposite. The communal language in our history books is to blamed for this and my heart bleeds. Lots of hope for the future: if reunification is a dream, we brothers need to come together to shape it.❤️ Love from India 🇮🇳🇵🇰❤️
