  • Why does Tarzan love Jane when he barely knows what a female human is? Let's talk about Disney and how the Hero Instinct subtly came into play in this Disney Renaissance Era film.

Also, keep in mind that in Jane’s upbringing, the societal standard was to never be forward or open with feelings, and playing coy was the way to reciprocate feelings. Also, he was on the forbidden side of things as he would not be a “suitable” match for Jane, once again, because if societal standards. Yes, Jane balked at the status quo multiple times, but you can still see that she cares about standards. From her bustle to her parasol, you can tell she is a lady, albeit an educated one. This also plays into her non-reciprocation of Tarzan’s feelings and her hesitation to even stay in the end, until her father gives his blessing and permission to pursue what is truly in her heart.

Not to mention her expressions show she is interested in Tarzan. Jane could be somewhere on the asexuality spectrum, or at least not want to act irrationally.

Agreed! I feel like she shows clear attraction to him fairly early on, but feels embarrassed by it because she isn’t really even sure how “human” he is at first, and marrying a wild man who was raised by apes in the jungle would be looked down on by people in England. I think one of the sequel movies even addressed her dealing with her friends coming to visit and judging her and Tarzan’s relationship. She was fighting herself and didn’t want to throw the life she knew away on a whim, but she definitely reciprocated pretty early on, I think!

I always felt that Tarzan didn't really fall in love with Jane at first. I feel like he was more intrigued that they're was another creature like him. Then when she teaches him about humans, that's when he grows feelings for her

I think Jane started reciprocating a bit earlier than the end. The scene where Tarzan shows her the birds and the vine swinging, I think, is when she starts thinking of Tarzan as more than a subject of study or even a friend.
Consider, yes, she wanted Tarzan to take her to the gorillas. However when she’s showing him the slides she leans a head on her cheek in admiration of him. She likes teaching him, she likes sharing with him and that Tarzan welcomes what she has to give him.
Just as guy’s may have a hero instinct, I think women have a similar instinct on the other end. Providing in their own way.
When Tarzan takes her to see the birds and swing on the vines with him, that’s when she sees he has true empathy, that he understands her and has parts of himself he can share with her outside of “merely” protecting her from danger. (Which, if we recall, she hired Clayton to do exactly that and he ain’t exactly a picture of chivalry.)
Her looking away when Tarzan looks into her eyes on the vines, again, to me, I think is more her reluctance to move forward on Tarzan for an understandable amount of reasons. She has a home and life so very far away, concern for him and having to leave him, the fact that he still hasn’t shown them the gorillas which was the whole point, etc.

Honestly love Tarzan x Jane. Even if Jane is the "damsel in distress" archetype, she's more than that. Jane ventured beyond her comfort zone to study gorillas, it's just Tarzan her man was an added bonus. Unlike Ariel who left everything she knew behind for a man rather impulsively, Jane took the courage to go out into the jungle to spot gorillas and gradually learned more about Tarzan as time went on. So, her staying in the jungle isn't just for Tarzan, it's probably to help him lead his gorilla pack too.

"The Little Mermaid" could be another Disney film w/ Hero Instinct. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric when she rescues him during the storm.
Also "Earth's Children" is a lot like "Tarzan". Protagonist raised by a less human species, becomes the best in her adopted family due to her species, and falls in love with the first human of the opposite sex they meet. There's also Hero Instinct at play: she meets by rescuing him from a wild animal.

Another Disney couple that I think is REALLY damn good is Eugene and Rapunzel. This time though it’s reversed in that the most drastic character change is on the guy’s part. Rapunzel’s arc in the movie is more about her identity, knowledge of the world, and growing out of her mindset forced on her by her abusive mother. She doesn’t though fundamentally change her personality or wants.
That honor goes to Eugene, who we don’t even meet under that name such is the displacement of the persona he created for himself. Eugene goes from only thinking Rapunzel is a load he has to bear to get the prize he’s after to be rich, to growing interested in her as a person, to sharing with her secrets he’s never told anyone since childhood, to basically forgetting why he wanted the crown and the riches he wanted because she makes him happier than they could.
Which leads to him flat out sacrificing his own life to give her her freedom. The hero instinct kicking in at last. “My very life is less important to me than your well being.”
In turn, Eugene was the first person Rapunzel met outside of Gothel. They didn’t have a good first meeting, in part because she hit him on the head with a frying pan. (Thrice.) However when he opened up about his real name and why he wanted the things he did, she began to see the man behind the mask and like him all the more. He was the one to bring her to her dream to see the lanterns and didn’t give any indication he was going away after that. Until Gothel makes it look like he betrayed her but then Rapunzel figured out that was also a lie on her part. Even then, Gothel assumes, likely correctly, that if Rapunzel were to leave, he would be the first person she would go to, which is why she opts to twist the knife by telling her he’s going to the gallows.
Then of course there’s the whole aforementioned, sacrificed his life so she wouldn’t be a prisoner for the rest of her life.

Sabor the leopard was an antagonist. It was brutal how she killed Tarzan's parents & that baby gorilla, but she is a force of nature. That's how leopards act.
Clayton on the other hand was a true villain. He only cared about taking the gorillas

There's an old character I read about called Mrs. Harlaney. She's a serious flirt, though she tends to confine herself to pushing the young woman staying at her B&B for her friend's wedding to find someone special. She gets very involved, helping the out-of-towner girl by letting her borrow a dress, and consistently pressing her for gossip about her exploits with the local boys. Plus, she has a tendency to almost-overshare about her *own* exploits as a "young filly" back in the day... Only getting cut off by the out-of-towner saying, "Okay, Mrs. Harlaney. TMI, I'm gonna head out now..."
Hearing you talk about/to Jane in this video, you make me laugh just as much as I did at imagining myself as that out-of-towner, getting to know Mrs. Harlaney! My cheeks were burning thinking about it, but I couldn't help smiling. Thanks for making my last night before getting back to my regular beat so much fun, Megan! I can always count on you to make theories so much more fun! 😂
