Punch-Out!! was the third cartridge my brother and I got for our NES and it's the game I most frequently remember kids talking about on the playground. That said, I tried to pour my all into this one, spending several hundred hours in research, writing, gathering assets, and editing. I hope you enjoy. The original script contained about 30 additional points of information but i opted to trim it down to keep it under 30 minutes. Maybe i'll make a follow-up to include such points. If you know any that I didn't mention feel free to add them here. Thanks
You really do do (heh) good work, man. It was the second game I'd ever played. I still play it. You brought a fresh look with points I wasn't aware of. Which gives me all the more reason to continue biting like a mosquito.
On the game show Double Dare one of the prizes was an NES and 5 games of your choice. My friends would compare lists if we ever won. Everyone's list included Mike Tysons Punch Out.
I don't like sports or sports games. Punch Out is the exception to that rule, because it's an incredibly fun series and has tons of personality. Never could get past Bald Bull. Still need to play the old arcade versions.

Awesome job on this! I very much enjoyed it!! I got two (2) tidbits of info you may or may not know about the game: 1:) Most Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out game cartridges are the 3-screw variant but there are a handful of 5-screw variants out there that are highly sought after by collectors. 2:) The Nintendo NES poster that says “Now You’re Playing With Power.” with the ROB head at the bottom, that lists a bunch of NES game titles, all the games are either the Black Box or Silver Box originals, but they also slipped in Punch-Out but not the Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out variant. Regardless of the Punch-Out variant, why is it the only non Black/Silver Box listed on the poster? I have a feeling a lot of the information you uncovered here might also be in this book. But maybe he’s got some nuggets of information in his book that you may not have learned of yet. So i definitely knew about the 5 screw... i've been looking for years. I have often wondered why MTPO wasn't silver or black. My hunch is that the endorsement deal made using his likeness impossible to ignore. Though that begs the question, why not use his name on the poster? hmmmm I actually know Jeff though we never spoke about that book. Interesting
At 23:17 you note that Tyson is labeled as Mchampionn. True. But I'm surprised you didn't catch what was actually going on; it's simply placing the word CHAMPION over the words MIKE TYSON. The M from Mike and the N from Tyson wasn't removed when they placed the word champion up there for some reason. I consider it a 'bug' or just an oversight. If you count out the total amount of spaces for Mike Tyson(10) and the word champion (8), you'll see it. :) Great video as always! Looking forward to more of your work!

I've been playing this live on Tik Tok and getting lots of love, I have Soda pop tattoo and it's top 5 game for me of all time, thanks for this documentary 💯💯💯🙏🙏🙏
Two inaccuracies I've noticed is that Mr. Sandman is not introduced with any music, rather does four uppercuts as a nod to his special move, and Great Tiger also shares themes with Von Kaiser and Super Macho Man (though it only plays in rounds 2 and 3) A thing you missed for glitches is that if you stop the single spin punch in Macho's fight (punch him right before he does it), the audience will freeze up and, when the fight is either won or lost, the game softlocks (the softlock doesn't happen on all versions of the game, but the audience freeze does) And finally, there's an odd secret in Soda's fight. when he tries to uppercut you, you can fake him out by blocking which seems to mess with him, as he sits down there for an extra second (99% sure there's a little something extra in his "pop") which allows you to punch him for a star, and oddly, using a star on him after lands an instant knockdown (though you have to do it again to instantly kd him each time he gets up)
You’re right about Sandman. The other things weren’t exactly missed. I just had to cut a lot from the script. The first draft had 20 more points and I also opted to skip strategies. It was already exceeding my limits.
I remember when I thought your Zelda video was the best I'd ever seen on TH-cam. Then you come out with this masterpiece. I thought I knew everything about my favorite game of all time. Aside from many other facts the entrance songs of the fighters is very interesting. Bravo good sir!

dude these videos are so awesome. thanks for all the research ive played this game 1000s of times and i didnt know a lot of this stuff
Phenomenal work! I always learn something new no matter how much I think I know. Do you think the next sequel we get will break the 15 year record gap between the release of Super Punch Out on SNES & Punch Out on Wii? I hope not!
I don't know if they'll ever do a sequel tbh They have too many fire franchises as it is
@@NESComplex I’ll always hold out hope. Nintendo purchased the developer of the Wii game, Next Level Games last year. Fingers crossed!
Glad i found this channel. its like a trip back to my childhood.
Perfectly executed as always!
Thanks bud!
Only on the internet could we get a 28 minute video about NES Punch-Out. And it's awesome. Well done, sir. Well done.
Haha! I appreciate it! I actually had to cut a lot because it was getting too long. I just hope the video moves fast and it feels like half the time.
@@NESComplex No, I was being serious. Very well done. I prefer the long form videos anyway.
Fantastic job! I love everything you put in to your declassified episodes. I was waiting for you to mention about the Nintendo power cassette tape. Sadly it wasn’t in there. Thank you for your time.
Tell me more... what cassette tape?
Get this man 100k subs already! Seriously, share this video! Great work!
Excellent retrospective! And, as usual, I learned stuff I never knew. I’ve made it to Tyson/Mr. Dream plenty of times…just never beat them! I need to work on fixing that or it’s going to bug me the respt of my life…haha. Thank you for all of your hard work on these.
You can do it... just not on an emulator
Might I highly suggest putting chapter markers in your videos? Your format is perfect for it and helps those of us who can't watch all of the video at one time.
That’s a good idea. I’ll need to look into it. Thanks for the feedback
I'm honestly not huge into pre-N64 consoles, but your channel makes me want to play them more than any other. Well done.
Haha! If you judged by my playtime you’d think I had a Switch channel. I just mostly like the history of it all.
I guess you just had to be there. I was showing my nephew Iron Tank by SNK and he couldn't fathom me enjoying that when I was younger. I thought he was nutzoid lol
Always a good day when I see some complex on my TH-cam feed! Retro Rejects 4 life!
What up complex. Great vid bro
Thank for watching and the kind words
Thank you for putting this informative Punch-Out!! video together :). I can see that a LOT of love and research went into this project hahaha!
The sprite with the shades always seemed suspicious, so I'm glad that someone actually managed to figure him out :).
By the way, the credits are not given in the NES game after finishing it oddly enough, only the secret code reveals them.
Anyway, be sure to keep it up and NEVER give up!
I've been playing this live on Tik Tok and getting lots of love, I have Soda pop tattoo and it's top 5 game for me of all time, thanks for this documentary 💯💯💯🙏🙏🙏
Great video!
Loved the end.
The guy with the beard and glasses was amazing.
Imagine discovering that back in the day?
As a kid I just thought about their flashes and blinking as clues. I never paid much attention to the crowd.
Love the declassified series.
Thanks a lot Mr. Panda!
Two inaccuracies I've noticed is that Mr. Sandman is not introduced with any music, rather does four uppercuts as a nod to his special move, and Great Tiger also shares themes with Von Kaiser and Super Macho Man (though it only plays in rounds 2 and 3)
A thing you missed for glitches is that if you stop the single spin punch in Macho's fight (punch him right before he does it), the audience will freeze up and, when the fight is either won or lost, the game softlocks (the softlock doesn't happen on all versions of the game, but the audience freeze does)
And finally, there's an odd secret in Soda's fight. when he tries to uppercut you, you can fake him out by blocking which seems to mess with him, as he sits down there for an extra second (99% sure there's a little something extra in his "pop") which allows you to punch him for a star, and oddly, using a star on him after lands an instant knockdown (though you have to do it again to instantly kd him each time he gets up)
You’re right about Sandman. The other things weren’t exactly missed. I just had to cut a lot from the script. The first draft had 20 more points and I also opted to skip strategies. It was already exceeding my limits.
Amazing episode, love this series! Hope you bring back the Nintendo Power one!
If only those would get watched. They take a long time, but viewers don't seem to choose them
I love your documentaries 5am on a weekend with coffee and a bagel a delightful experience
Upvoted before watching lol
same! lol
Haha! I hope it was warranted
Awesome video! I hoping to see a documentary like this one so have a good one!
Yeeesss. Let's get started.
🙌🏼
These have been fantasatic to watch. For a future episode, I'd suggest covering either Deadly Towers, Wizards and Warriors or Dragon Warrior.
Some of those are on the longer list, but since these take 3 months to make, I might be in a retirement home by then
I remember when I thought your Zelda video was the best I'd ever seen on TH-cam. Then you come out with this masterpiece. I thought I knew everything about my favorite game of all time. Aside from many other facts the entrance songs of the fighters is very interesting. Bravo good sir!
Wow! Thank you so much! That truly means a lot to me!
Best video ever made concerning Punch Out
Love this serie
ikr this series is very informative, so much stuff I've never heard anywhere else
Thank you! My favorite part of making meters is finally getting to share them
Job well done in consistently delivering a plethora of information throughout the entire video that I had never heard or seen before.
I still love and play this game. Classic
It never gets old!
Great video. One of my favorite NES games. The controls are perfect and the gameplay never gets old.
It's such a simple concept, but executed perfectly. I don't think SPO or PO 2009 did it better
You're right. The newer games didn't feel the same.
I wish it played as well on the NES Classic with HDMI
