Cannonball was a master. Soul, technique, wicked sense of rhythm, phrasing, and timing. Always knows where the blues are. Takin’ us to church! Go ahead Adderley bros, take us all there.
It's not fading away, there are people my age who play jazz and I do too, I'm not that advanced but I'm learning it and I'm enjoying it a lot. Btw I'm 24 y/o
@@turnitr I second this. Gen Z loves jazz bro. When i find someone who hasnt heard it i show them and 80% of them love it and a lot of my friends started listening to mostly jazz because of me
When I was in 9th grade I bought " Cannonball's Greatest Hits". I listened to it over and over again. This was in Boca Raton Florida. Believe it or not one week my teacher had to take off and my class got Cannonball and Nat's High school Band teacher. Boy he was tough and strict. I finally got the nerve to ask him if he was Cannonball's teacher. In a very strong and commanding voice he replied " Yes I was Juilian Adderley's teacher!". Boy if I only had him as my Band instructor I would of became great. I tried to play on an old Alto sax with a broken mouthpiece. Forty years later I got that sax fixed for $4.50. I played the horn and it played like butter. I sounded like Bird. Very sadly it wasn't long that I had to have all my rotten teeth removed by an Oral surgeon. Sadly, that's the story of my life. Right as I was about to achieve great success everything fell apart.
Most in jazz get loose with time feel, it's part of the language. Then there are a few that don't f around so much, mostly just sit back in the pocket and swing the absolute shit out of it. That's Cannonball and his is groove is unmatched IMHO. I appreciate his depth of groove it more with each passing year. Cannonball, Gene Harris, Horace Silver, these are who I listen to when I want to feel that heavy swing.
It's the immediate access to jazz giants like Cannonball that makes me humbled and grateful for the age of the internet and TH-cam in particular.
It's amazing to see so many old gems preserved online. What a wondrous age we live in...
Sadly we would never be able to travel back in the 60s to hear it in person…

@@courtly5982but there are still plenty of great players now, so we get the advantage of seeing the entire history of jazz.

Cannonball Adderley's sound demanded attention. He spoke to be heard. Legendary.
Cannonball Adderly , to me, is what Jazz Saxophone is supposed to sound like-raucous and on the verge of being out of control
I cannot understand why jazz is fading away. I first heard this as a teenager in the 60s and just knew that this was it.

jazz will never die
Too often,Cannon's little brother was overlooked. What an incredibly individual player!
Not just a great individual player, but also a great song-writer. He's the one who wrote "Work Song".
the Adderley brothers!! Nat and Julian! Nothing equals them!!
I can’t even comprehend how fucking great these guys are.
Warning: listening to this song on your way to work may result in a speeding ticket.
This is better than any motivational video in the world. 🎶💙🎶
Cannonball just killing it on that solo, one of my all-time faves.
No joke he absolutely nukes it in one chorus. Crushes it.
@@danmcbmusic Really man, thank God for TH-cam! 🤩
INCREDIBLE by ALL!! I can SO RELATE to this type of jazz....THE BEST!! Heavenly listenin' especially live back then....I was 21 in '62.
My favorite all time alto player.
Some of the best hardbop ever done. Cannonball, Nat, and Joe Zawinul smoking on the piano - is Joe scat-singing auf Deutsch 😂
The amount of control these guys have is par excellence

This is, without a doubt, the most swinging band of all time.
Swingin'!!!!
Wow these guys are phenominal! And it just sounds great!!!
First time I listen Cannonball Adderley and his quintet in San Francisco. Really impressed. This is a genius. Strong things guys.
❤all time music 👏👍💋❤️
I like Cannonball Adderley best for work songs.
Mercy Mercy Mercy is A True treasure 🪙
Ball tearing it up on the super 20! Yes❤❤
Superb 😍
Keep listening to classic jazz like this and you’ll find many connections to contemporary music and musicians. Very impressive, young scholar!
Smooth
So great to see Joe's hands.
Whaou!!! Thanks you
Amazing just amazing 😍😍
Thank you.🙏🎷🔥
I love this! ❤️
cool early Joe Zawinul!😮

Man, I want to work like that work song. I wanna cook like that. Holy fuck, this so fucking good.
Zawinal without that distinctive mustache..I almost didn't recognize him. Wow! This group was hot!:)

Luv it a lot 👏 #Prince4Ever always told #TheseRRealMusicians 🎶🎷⚘💜
It's an Oscar Brown Jr song, in the classic LP Sin & Soul (1960)
Oscar wrote the lyrics - it originally was an instrumental written by Nat Adderley, Cannonball's brother and cornet player in the group.
❤️

❤❤❤
So gud
Written by Nat Adderly.
since i heard jazz played by US soldiers in Austria in the fifties i am a fan
woooohoo
It's interesting to see an unmustachioed Joe Zawinul

Where's the sixth guy?
And not one shot of the bass or drums. 😀Was hoping to catch some of Sam Jones. That's the way it was back then, furniture.
Anyone else hear "we got a groovy thing" by Simon + Garfunkel?
Uh,that would be a "No". 😞

Well spotted. Very much so.
@@kevinmcinerney1959 thanks! Glad you agree - makes me wonder if S+G took some inspiration from this tune 🤔
@@joshcorwin3742 They really did. I think it was probably a little respectful borrowing.
I think Jethro Tull ripped this off for locomotive breath 😁
its a minor blues lots of people reworked it
Sounds similar to count bubba
