    Thank you for these general guidelines for mouthpiece fitting. It seems to confirm what I observed. I have large lips and I was playing on a Bach 5g mouthpiece with a Bach 42t trombone, and I had a lot of problems changing partials. I ordered a 3g mouthpiece and the very first day I am already playing much better, even in higher ranges, though I need to develop endurance and range. It feels so much better to play and the way it opened up my ability to phrase was great. The sound difference is incredible.

    If it's possible, could you talk about the tuba mouthpieces? Just curious as to what your opinions are

    I use a Griego CS5 when playing euphonium. For playing large bore trombones I use a Schilke 51D

    • @hammerhead300
      @hammerhead300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Schilke 51D is what I'm using on baritone, mine is a small shank and it just didn't work well with my 607F. I've gone to Monette mouthpieces on both my medium and large bore trombones, I know they're expensive and don't work well for everybody but they work great for me.

    In terms of mouthpiece brand and size for my euphonium, I've always loved my Bach 6 1/2 Euphonium, it's always been the most comfortable to me

    its all up to the job you have to do. myself, I use 3 different mouthpieces depending on the job. I use a warburton 6SV ANCHOR GRIP FOR MY SCRESM WORK AND A DEEPER MOUTHPIECE FOR MY IMPROV WORK. IF IM DOING ANY CONCERT BAND WORK OR SOLO WORK ,I WANT A WANT A WARMER SOUND.

    I know you probably have a lot of suggestions, but for the youngsters, braces, retainers, or loose/lost teeth maybe?

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends how old are they! Under 7 I would not recommend playing brass instrument in general, in regards to braces, hard to suggest anything since I've never ran into anyone playing brass with braces. Loose/lost teeth, very tricky subject again. Front teeth are always the key. I might do a video at some point but with all fairness I don't even know whether my suggestions on this would be qualified at this point due to lack of experience. Will do some research though! Good point buddy! Thanks for watching!

    Was just wondering about your opinion on endurance building.
    Should i practice (as everyone says) ---> long tones or do lip bends as you mentioned. But I'm not sure if i do lip bends correctly because i do not experience "burning corners".
    I mostly struggle with playing long phrases.
    Great video as always a lot of useful information...

    Where did you learn this stuff. I didn't teach you. It's exactly what I teach. I would add the key is CONTROL. If you can't control your choice it's too big. It goes for width and depth. God's continuous blessings for you brother in Christ. Happy Birthday too!

      You learn these things and methods through playing many years and improving. I have been playing for over 17 years now and to be fare most of the tips I share including this one comes from my personal playing experience and observing other people with their own issues. I am glad you enjoy the videos my friend, I will cover more details about everything including mouthpieces as I upload more content. Best of luck my friend!

    You say this video is primarily for Trombone, Euphonium and Baritone. Would I be able to group in Bass Trombone with this or would you consider that a "larger mouthpiece"? If you so, could you maybe make a video on the Bass Trombone mouthpieces. I'm looking at Denis Wick and trying to compare but it would be lovely to have your input! Thank you!

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Matonizz Denis Wick 1AL is what I was looking at. Thank you immensely!

    • @Matonizz
      @Matonizz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No probs buddy! That size mouthpiece or similar or larger sizes your thick part will be inside the cup anyways since you have much more space. With larger mouthpieces (bass trombone, tuba) the important thing becomes not leaving too much of a gap in-between your lips in order not to loose control and agility, unlike euphonium/trombone/baritone/trumpet/horn where precision of centering is a bit trickier. However, I will do a colab video with couple of other legit professional players to give more specific advise for bass trombonists and tuba players. Will try to get this arranged asap. Be patient and thanks for watching bud!

    I need you're help on mouthpiece sizes. So I play the marching baritone at my school, which has a small shank mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is in really bad condition; the end is dented and the place where I put my mouth is corroded with rust. I want to buy the JP374 Sterling Bb Euphonium. It comes with a mouthpiece, but I don't know if that mouthpiece will work on my marching baritone. Also, if the mouthpiece included with the JP374 isn't high quality, I was thinking about buying a steven mead mouthpiece (silver to match the marching baritone), and I was wondering if I should get ultra or non-ultra, and what size steven mead mouthpiece.

    • @PlayboiiTheStud
      @PlayboiiTheStud 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cole Christie If it helps, the JP374 Sterling Euphonium takes a large shank mouthpiece which won't fit your marching baritone since you say it takes a small shank. The JP374 comes with a stock mouthpiece about the size of a 5g to my knowledge(I could be wrong). So a Denis Wick Ultra or the Original Sm Series are great but I would try out either if possible. The dimensions of the two are similar (different throughout such as the shape and thickness of the mouthpiece and rim. Also the SM series contains a barrel backbore while the Ultra has a V-type back bore which enhances different aspects). Either the SM5 or SM5U would be the closest to the stock mouthpiece the JP374 comes with to my knowledge. I advise to try out both because they may have similar dimensions but can feel and perform much differently. It All depends on you though. If you want a new mouthpiece for the marching baritone, consider a small shank as the JP374 would only fit a large shank mouthpiece. I hope this helps. For more information on the specific details and reviews on both of the Steven Mead Series of mouthpieces you can check Dwerden.com in the forums as well.

    Can trombone mouthpieces be used on a euphonium and vise versa?

    • @sealio728
      @sealio728 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jade Wolf They can be USED, but neither are made for each other. A euphonium mouthpiece works best in a euphonium and a trombone mouthpiece works best in a trombone.

      Hi Nurmisha, no, they are not the same. Alto horn is a brass band version of French horn. It has smaller mouthpiece than euphonium and is higher in pitch as well. Hope that helps! Best, Algirdas
