Interesting how this modern commuter rail operation operates as a loco hauled set and, looking at the size of the locos, there's no lack of horsepower! I say interesting because here in Australia at least almost all commuter trains are now electric or diesel multiple unit sets. Not saying it's bad, just interesting. If I ever get over there I'd like to take a ride on it.
This is actually pretty common with a lot of commuter trains in the US, the issue is that a lot of them, like this one, share the tracks with Amtrak and freight trains so trying to electrify them would be difficult. The only commuter train that I know that is switching to electric is Caltrain in the San Francisco area.
