Train Ride on Tennessee's Most-Scenic Railroad from Clinchfield 800

- On November 12th and 13th, Lhoist North America ran several employee appreciation specials to honor personnel from its Crab Orchard and Anderson mines for keeping the business alive throughout what was a very difficult year for the company. An unprecedented mine collapse forced the two plants to collaborate in creative ways to ensure the Crab Orchard facility remained online throughout 2021 and early 2022.
The passenger equipment used during the excursion, including the world-famous Clinchfield Railroad EMD F7A no. 800, was brought to Lhoist by the hard-working volunteers at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum (SARM), who also staffed the train the entire weekend. SARM operated the train safely and professionally, with many of Lhoist's employees leaving fabulous reviews of the experience. Many remarked they hoped it would become an annual tradition. Time will tell.

The thing that I find the most amazing is that nobody talks about the men that actually built these tracks.

As a retired civil engineer, I am humbled by the human effort that went into making this railroad a reality. From the initial surveys to determine the lay of the land, selecting the most efficient route, and then the human hands who rearranged the earth to construct the embankments and the bridges. Incredible what those in the past created for a better, more prosperous future. I wish we could do the same.

The EMDs are definitely one of my favorite engines, and to see it chugging through such amazing terrain was a feast for the senses. Thanks for posting such amazing ride-alongs!

This locomotive has one of the best, if not the best Nathan M5 airhorns out there. Well a strong contender to my claim would probably be FP7 Southern 6133
I can confirm, I've been for a cab ride in that exact locomotive, and I got to blow the horn a couple times
RIP ear bud wearers.
Those type of horns in those days some railroads used them blowing them a certain sequence as a communication language.
It has a wonderful toot, warms my vagina to hear it.

This brings back memories. I traveled this path a few times during my childhood behind the 4501 when the TVRM had a fall excursion going from Chattanooga to Crossville TN.

Everything looks the same as it did 36 years ago. That was the TVRM trip to Crossville. Another commenter mentions 4501, but my recollection is 4501 ran from Chattanooga to Rockwood( the bottom of the mountain), and then they removed 4501 and put two diesels on, because there was no place to turn the train nearby. That was a rainy day and we stalled at least twice before getting to Crab Orchard. That ex-Tennessee Central line was mostly a folly. It was the only line that ran directly across TN from Nashville to Knoxville, but missed any meaningful traffic sources. Plus, it has a hard climb in either direction(which amazingly are the sections still in service. It's been proposed to reinstall the missing section that NS removed but I doubt it ever happens. Great video!

I live in east TN/North Georgia. I only live about twenty minutes from the TVRM in Chattanooga. Went on one of their excursion trains as a kid, and would love to go on another sometime. This is an awesome video.
The FP7 will always be on my top 3 list of favorite locomotives. Never gets old operating it on the Clinchfield on Train Sim World.
The thing i find weird is the F7 in game has a front and rear horn toggle yet the real F7 had only one horn toggle

That must be the old Tennessee Central main line trackage. Rode passenger trains over that line a few times, back in the day.

This is cool. I’ve never been on the Clenchfield, but it looks gorgeous. Next you should do the Hiawassee Loop.
I wish I could say I was stunned by the number of people complaining about the speed of the train, who haven't bothered to read that it's an excursion, meant to be slow and scenic; it doesn't even occur to them to check the description for a possible reason before rushing to display their foolishness. I'm not stunned. I'm not even surprised. It's just sad.

I drove the length of Tennessee two times during my servicing communications equipment days... i'm 74 and retired 11/29/2022 now. pretty state all the way.
Ok I know that they likely inspect everything quite often and know that it’s all safe but DAMN those bridges look like they could collapse at any moment.

Everyone drives on the roads but trains get there own road that’s mostly scenic. Can’t complain about that.

Really beautiful path thru the countryside. Any Rail Speeder groups that ride this route? First time I rode with the rail speeders and crossed one of these high bridges........oh me......I could not grip the seat tight enough!
I would think when the F unit came out the engineers who had been running steam thought, look now we can see both sides of the track. That was probably a real safety factor.

Love the train & the horn. It would have been a prettier ride in the fall with the leaves turning. Don't understand why the horn sound before going over bridge or why the trip stops in the middle of nowhere to go back. Just a little confused.
