- Paul Ashworth (Colin Firth) is, and always has been, obsessed with Arsenal FC. But when he falls for Sarah (Ruth Gemmell), he finds that his relationship fluctuates as wildly as his football team's fortunes across a roller coaster season in this adaptation of a Nick Hornby novel.

I don't know how many people realise that Nick Hornby's book is based on the diaries he kept as a young kid during his parents' divorce, and just about everything in the book is true. I was in the same class as him at school and was going through virtually the same thing with my parents, but we never became real friends - probably because I was using every chance to go to Birmingham to watch Aston Villa while he was going up to London to watch Arsenal. The amazing thing was that I ended up living and working in Germany and one day my German girlfriend asked if I had ever heard of an author called Nick Hornby because he was roughly my age. When I told her I used to sit next to him in class she didn't believe me. I actually get a mention in another book of his - "High Fidelity" - which was unfortunately changed in the film to be based in the USA instead of England. There's a rather disgusting bit of me in a Wimpy Bar with him and talking about the froth in a cup of coca cola.

I haven't been in touch with Nick for a long time. To be honest I think everybody who went to football matches in the 70s and 80s would have stories to tell. It was an incredible time, with things happening which it is hard to believe really happened - both positive and negative.

Even in '97 movie trailers were just shortened versions of the entire film.
Didn't bother us though like it bothers people now. We just got excited for original content, which doesn't exist now.
Little did they know how much the bigger the club would become in the following 25 years. Enjoy it guys, success, like Champions League football and FA Cup victories, is never eternal.

Haven't seen the film, read the book. It works for every team on the whole damn world. Mine is outside the uk, Hertha BSC from Berlin. We hardly win anything. Champion of the 2. Bundesliga, 2 Cups in the 1930s, we host the german FA Cup, but never won this fucking thing. We always fell one goal short. At least Arsenal is lucky to play european most of the time.

I love this film, it’s one of my favourites although back when I first saw it as a Man United crazed twelve year old I didn’t get it.

I live in Bosnia, no association with England nor Highbury but I feel It though my vains. My grandad that died from cancer really favored Arsenal and would sit me down to watch with him at the Henry days. Years later I'm still there, this movie portraits the love for the club just as It is. Got my girlfriend to watch It and now few months later shes an arsenal through and through as well, It tells you all you need to know ❤🤍
