This movie is just great regardless of the club you support. it reflects on the life of passionate football fans who live through moments of joy and sadness.
Jeffrey Mallouk even my dad said this was pretty much what it was like, say in silence until thomas broke through the middle, he'd waited since 1972 to win the league
Totally agree, which ever team you support this sums up the ups and downs of every football fan each season.I Remember when Leeds won the league in 92 when Liverpool beat Man Utd ok not as incredable as Arsenals title but just like Mark Strong at the end and that incredible feeling when your team wins the league especially when you have not won it for years.
The is Chelsea Nou Camp 2012, Man City 2012, Juventus 2002, Any last gasp won of a major trophy and you are going mental. This is what football personifies. The Italy vs Germany Semi-Final WC 2006. The list goes on. Its why true football fans live the game so much.
Are you taking the piss? This is way bigger than Chelsea nou camp or City in 2012…?! This is the whole league season wrapped up in the final game vs their title rivals - won on goals scored, in the last minute of the game. This will genuinely never be topped.
I am not an Arsenal fan but this truly was the most incredible end to any season, unless you are 40 years old plus then you can’t understand what Arsenal achieved that night. I don’t have the stats to hand but in the previous ten seasons or so Liverpool had probably lost about 10 of 210 home league games and probably only once or twice by two goals - but under this crazy pressure Arsenal pulled it off.
as Roma supporter i say thank you for Arsenal, you've beaten the hated liverpool and won that season in the last minute! Few years after our defeat in the final match of champions league... you vindicated us! Go Gunners!
I was in a restaurant for the locals in Phuket Thailand. I knew the owners! They set up a TV for me to watch! After a few beers a crowd had arrived. Most wanted Liverpool. Turned out to be one of the best nights of my life! Went back to my house in the early hours! COYG!
"At the dark end of the street..." Best thing ever. My love for the Arsenal is as sick and debilitating as it is for Hornby. This bit still makes me cry. UP THE ARSE
seeing those people coming out to celebrate made me tear up. saddens me in a way that i’ve never got to experience highbury or arsenal winning a league title, and so in a way it made the whole movie even more relatable..also that shot near the beginning where he first walks up and sees the highbury pitch gave me chills
The line in this scene (not here) that I loved is the response when he said "we might as well be 4-0 down" and the response "if you're gonna win a game 2-0, you stand a lot better chance if you're not 4-0 down".
"All I know about superstition is that is bad luck to trail 0-3 when it's nothing but one or two minutes to go" , don't remember who was the manager who said that.
I love the way she is wearing a red dress with white spots. Also love it at the end when she finally gets what it all means wearing an Arsenal flag around her.
They've certainly played themselves into a situation very unlike this. Who knows, their promotion run this year might come down to the final game, though.
As a Liverpool sympathizer I still remember well the disappointment I felt that day, but Nick Hornby well managed to show the contrast - and the quest for balance - between rationality and emotivity represented by respectively his work as teacher and Arsenal supporter.
I support AS Roma, but watching this scene I enjoy the double because Arsenal beat the hated liverpool and won the Premier League... few years after we were defeated in the final of the champions league! Since then I have been supporting the Gunners, although lately in England my heart is Geordie for Newcastle United that, ironically, has the colors of hated jubentus but is the only one with those colors I adore and support. But Arsenal will always have a special place in my heart. Arsenal and Newcastle United, my favorite English teams! Come on Gunners, you vindicated us very well in that season!
sorry senor marco. But you lot in rome had your chance to win the european cup in 1984, and you lot blew it. So shut the fuck up and take it like a man
E mica fu colpa del Liverpool se non vinceste quella sera, Bonetti voleva fare lo splendido e rinviare a centrocampo buttando palla addosso a Neal, e Falcão che non tirò il rigore mentre Righetti si prese la rogna di farlo...
As a Chelsea fan, this was my reaction in the Nou Camp when we Torres scored with seconds left, been a Chelsea fan all my life, before the money as well, that moment was one of the best moment of my life, fucking love football.
Same as,a fellow blue....a perfect football movie though, the start reminds me of my dad taking me in the late 70’s through the 80’s & im just like Paul....doesn’t matter it’s Arsenal,ALL football fans can relate to this at some point in their lives!!!Football eh??Bloody hell
I just checked the stats, in their previous 209 home league games Liverpool had lost just 18 games - that’s 8.6% loss rate - and conceded just 120 goals at home - just 0.57 goals per home game on average! What an achievement by Arsenal.
Aguero vs QPR is not even close to Thomas vs Pool. The greatest climax in the history of the first division or premier league and a movie that encapsulates that raw emotion. This wasn’t manufactured by sky tv.........
This was the First Division, not the Premier League and Man City got two in injury time to steal their first ritle in god knows how long away from their rivals with the last kick
Loool, football didn't exist before the PL confirmation bias. I don't know why I bother entertaining some of the muppets that respond to my youtube posts. If you can't see the top two in the league playing an end of season title decider (Arsenal vs Liverpool) is way more impressive than a side funded by Arab billions beating relegation fodder, when really they should have thumped QPR rather than scraping through as they did against 10 men then thats not my problem. You were probably in nappies in 1989, so now you've had 2 minutes of my time, jog on.
@@scousebusters1989 😂😂😂. You yourself called it the Premier League before it had even been formed, arguably showing a lack of knowledge but I'll let that slide as a slip of the tongue (well, keyboard). There's no denying that this is a dramatic climax to a season, however I personally believe that Man City's title win was more dramatic than this
Can you read? To quote "the greatest climax in the history of the first division OR premier league", the clue is in the OR. You really don't have a clue what you are talking about. Liverpool where the best team in the land during the 80s, this was a title decider at their ground where we HAD to win by 2 clear goals. All City had to do is win, big difference. Now stop wasting my time.
@@scousebusters1989 All they had to do was win. They came back from 2-1 down in the dying moments to steal the title from their greatest rivals who thought they'd won it. If we swapped the teams (Man City win in 89), you would 100% say that the other way was more dramatic
My dad can't stand that day but I was born shortly after it so I'm fine with it, it's a good film. Ironic now that we're the ones who seem to be cursed and a lot longer than what Arsenal went through at the time.
As a Man United supporter I don't like Arsenal but that reaction was me and my mate Shaun when Terry missed his penalty in the 2008 UCL final. That is what football does to us, and it's why I love this movie and the book.
Good movie...well kind of...lol.....l'm a liverpool fan. and l was 11 years old in 1989 when this happened. l still remember watching this on lTV ,and to this day. l still have nightmares about this. l actually think that this was the night when we were knocked of our perch. We did win the title back the following season. But sadly of cource it would be another 30 years before we would win the title again
The commentary is incorrect. Liverpool would have been 'then' champions for the 18th time not 19th time. We won the league the following year (for the 18th) time. Which is the last time Liverpool have won it.
I'm here on the weekend before the close of 2021/22 season, If Liverpool beat Wolves, and Villa by some miracle stop Man City at the Etihad from getting anymore than a draw, then Liverpool will be champions. Of course its never going to happen, but I'm sure everyone was saying the same about the Arsenal beating the reds by 2 goals at fortress Anfield leading up to that fateful night in May '89
It is an interesting history we have at Arsenal because - as good as it is been- we still have so much to achieve. It is what makes football a great sport and perhaps what makes Arsenal a great but not an elite football club.
This movie is just great regardless of the club you support. it reflects on the life of passionate football fans who live through moments of joy and sadness.

Brings it all back ...fantastic 👍👍👍
Growing up in Ireland. Will never forget that night. Had to watch it on the Colour portable tv in the kitchen with my dad and bro.
"Oh shut up Pleat" classic, i was there never seen so many grown men cry, happy days.
At the time I shouted something similar to Pleat (!) and still do everytime I watch this clip.

Arsenal hadn’t won at Anfield for 15 years and they hadn’t lost there by 2 goals since Everton did it in 86
26th may 1989. great day

2:30 - So weird seeing a defender passing the ball back to the keeper and him just picking it up.
That doesn't exist anymore
"Shut up Pleat..."
God I would give ANYTHING to experience the joy of this, celebrating in the streets when Arsenal win the league.. I can dream
"At the dark end of the street..." Best thing ever. My love for the Arsenal is as sick and debilitating as it is for Hornby. This bit still makes me cry. UP THE ARSE
Yes. Makes me cry too but just watch it yesterday and cried even more Saturday's fiasco vs Pool.

How about now?? We will win it this year!
Such a good film.
Harry..Merlin...trainee days.
Any Kingsman fan out here? :D
17 years before Kingsman.
Kingsman, yes. Football, not so much.
yeeeaaa
I recognised Firth but wasn't sure whether that was Mark Strong or not, amazing!!
Currently reading a fic inspired by how young they were here 🤭

This was filmed in my school and I was lucky enough to be in it😎

Doesn't he say something like: "Do you want them to score the 2nd before they score their 1:st" :)

Rocky, Merson, Thomas, the famous back four ... great team, fantastic memories 👌
Merse? What about Smudger???? Crikey the man had over a century of goals for us.
One of the GREAT endings, so full of explosive joy.

One of the best films made
The book was great, regardless of who you support. They spoilt the film by making it a love story. It wasn't needed. His love was Arsenal.
Lol, Mark Strong still looks the same now.
This is the best ever movie even I m united fan from Israel
As if Arsenal fans would have drank Holsten Pils
But isn't this set before they sponsored Spurs?
Exactly, no arsenal fan would.
It's so great.
