Just a heads up. If you try it on a 1999, it is about 50 times harder... the spark plugs are blocked by the frame so you have maybe 4 to 5 inches of room to work with.
Zachary Dalton yep I have that model. I use a 19mm socket on the back of the spark plug socket to make it easy. I have 3 different 19mm sockets and extensions to make it work.

As I continue to climb in elevation, I continue to get misfires. I want to believe its just the spark plugs. I've been getting the same misfires cyl3 & cyl4. Your thoughts? Thanks!
At 112k miles it should be due for plugs and wires also if it hasn't been done yet. Occasionally you will find the coil pack failing but that is not as common. Start with the plugs and wires.
The owners manual for my 2014 Outback calls for plug replacement at 60k, which is where my car is at right now. That seems really early, based on my experience with other modern cars. David Eckstrom the replacement interval set by the manufacturer is based on the type of plugs they install and the duty cycle of the engine. Most plugs in modern vehicles will go beyond 60k if the engine is functioning properly. Breaking the threads when removing plugs is rare unless they were installed improperly previously. Hi ....I just replaced the spark plugs on my 1999 Subaru legacy outback.....now the problem is that the car runs for 30-40 and the engine just turns off....any suggestions?😅😅
What year is this please? I have a 2004 outback and I think the spark plugs are completely horizontal and there is about an inch and a half of clearance before hitting the frame.
I have a 2000 Subaru outback‘s Limited addition and my spark plug just won’t screw in for some strange reason I feel like it has no teeth. Am I doing something wrong? By the way they repaired the belt The mechanic told me I had to get a brand new engine. Mind you that’s after they fix the belt so I took it home and now the spark plug is loose. I have a buddy of mine that’s going to come by tomorrow but he’s not a Subaru specialist or anything like that.
ekimosurac1 yes but not unmanageable. You will have coil packs mounted directly over the plugs. There are also going to be some other changes due to a newer generation of the car.
You can but don’t have to. Some of it will leak out when you pull the lines off and depending on how you place the tank when you set it down the fluid may leak out.
Joon kinloch yes I have owned several and put lots of miles on with no real issues. It is important that if you are buying a used one to make sure it has been taken care of. Look for oil or coolant leaks and see when the timing belt was last replaced.
Dragonslayer 007 Yours will be slightly different as your car will have coil on plug ignition. The coil will be bolted into the valve cover right where you see the spark plugs in this video. They have a 10mm bolt that holds the on and a wire harness that comes to them. Simply unplug the harness and remove the bolt then pull out the coil. The spark plug will be underneath. Simply remove the plugs and reinstall new ones in reverse order.
also you said the old sparkplugs had "erosion" around them. you're thinking of *Corrosion*, erosion is what happens when rocks are made smooth by weather over time.
jesus hernandez there are several things that can cause this. Depending on the year of your car. You may need a coil. You may also want to do a compression test. I have also had some of these with broken motor mounts that cause a lot of shaking. How does it feel for power?
Your Car Guy DR it had no cel on. Drove it once it felt underpowered and then the cel came on and it had white smoke coming from the engine. Parked for about a half hour and it had no cel and it drove totally normal. Next day it was shaking again.
jesus hernandez you may have a head gasket issue. First thing I would do is a compression test. I have a video showing how to do this on a Honda. It is the same process for this car.

What year is this please? I have a 2004 outback and I think the spark plugs are completely horizontal and there is about an inch and a half of clearance before hitting the frame.
Sorry forgot to mention. I have LL bean 6 cylinders 3.0 engine
Quoc Nguyen this car is a 2001. The 2004 should be similar. It looks worse than it is.
It is possible that the cylinder head is stripped out. It is possible to repair it. It is tough to do while the engine is in the car.
Thanks
Would the procedure be the same for a 2016 Outback? Thanks for making this by the way.
ekimosurac1 the 2016 will be a little different but the same principles apply.
@@YourCarGuyDR Different as in more difficult ? Thanks
ekimosurac1 yes but not unmanageable. You will have coil packs mounted directly over the plugs. There are also going to be some other changes due to a newer generation of the car.
@@YourCarGuyDR Ok. Thank you !
Ramp up the difficulty by a factor of 10.
I love the word easy.
Would it be the same for a Crosstrek 2018 ?
Andre LOFANO not sure if the cross trek is exactly the same but should be very similar.
Hey dude r u available to answer a 2.5 subi question, since u have rebuilt?
Sure
Wow, should've done this myself instead of paying my shop $400 to do it...
Can ya do another one on a 2014 please?
Moflyboy Blanquito I will see if I can get one lined up.
Well done! 👍🏼👍🏼
Is there a special socket for this? that plug is deep inside engine.
Best to use a standard spark plug socket and a 3” extension.
@@YourCarGuyDR thank you very much for info!
great video , thanks !
Bennie G thank you for watching
Where did you get the headlights?
HONESTLY 😭😍
the sparkplug socket that came with my socket kit is too bigg to fit into the holes
Cursed Kennedy that’s not fun. Should just need a 5/8 spark plug socket or you can do it with a regular deep 5/8 it just won’t hold the plug for you.
@@YourCarGuyDR I actually found one in my junk drawer Luckily I had one in there lol
Do you have to drain the washer fluid out before you remove it?
You can but don’t have to. Some of it will leak out when you pull the lines off and depending on how you place the tank when you set it down the fluid may leak out.
@@YourCarGuyDR thank you! I just topped it off last week so I was wondering if that would be an issue but im fine with a little leaking out
What year is it
Do I need to disconnect the battery when doing this job ?
No you do not.
Is the Subaru Outback a reliable vehicle for heavy driving, in your opinion?
Joon kinloch yes I have owned several and put lots of miles on with no real issues. It is important that if you are buying a used one to make sure it has been taken care of. Look for oil or coolant leaks and see when the timing belt was last replaced.
Your Car Guy DR thank you sir! I’m looking at 2000 outback for Delivering services
Where can I acquire one of those spark plug wrenches?
hybridone890 any tool dealer or auto parts store should have them.
Your Car Guy DR are they pricey?
hybridone890 not for most brands. But if you buy MAC, SnapOn, Matco, they are quite pricey. But you can get the generic ones quite cheaply.
What year is that outback I have a 2014 is it the same set up?
Dragonslayer 007 Yours will be slightly different as your car will have coil on plug ignition. The coil will be bolted into the valve cover right where you see the spark plugs in this video. They have a 10mm bolt that holds the on and a wire harness that comes to them. Simply unplug the harness and remove the bolt then pull out the coil. The spark plug will be underneath. Simply remove the plugs and reinstall new ones in reverse order.
Your Car Guy DR thank you very much
Will this work for a 1997 legacy outback by any chance?
CJ Nelson yes it should
@@YourCarGuyDR thank you so much, seriously!
David S. Kruse I appreciate the feedback.
Super helpful
Never knew Tom Hanks worked on Subarus
very helpful though, thank you
Griffin Monahan yes my son was learning to run the camera.
Would this work on a 1997 subaru legacy L ?
Redtiger 416 yes
@@YourCarGuyDR Thank you so much
I love you Sir!!!
also you said the old sparkplugs had "erosion" around them.
you're thinking of *Corrosion*, erosion is what happens when rocks are made smooth by weather over time.
No I mean erosion as when the ceramic insulation and the electrode erode widening the gap on the plugs. Keep trying you might get there one day.
Thank you👍
This is the Blair Witch of auto mechanic videos :/
🤣🤣🤣
After I change the spark plugs there is not engine light anymore but it keeps shaking !!! , any comment on this ??
jesus hernandez is the shaking at idle or while driving?
Your Car Guy DR both !!
jesus hernandez there are several things that can cause this.
