Muffler delete would be illegal in many places, definitely here in Australia. Check your local laws before doing that. There's a really good reason exhausts go out to the very back of your car. You could also get a local exhaust place to make up a straight through pipe to replace the muffler (done that before) with and keep carbon dioxide out of your cabin.

Very true! Ive had 2 run-ins with local law in Georgia about exhaust... Once was a warning years back but then about 3 years ago I was ticketed. Law states that exhaust system must fully extend to the rear of the vehicle. Nothing to do with having or NOT having a muffler, hell you can legally straight pipe the entire system, but you HAVE to have a tailpipe that reaches at least to your rear bumper

Absolutely, but I didn't have a straight edge nor a protractor. So in case you didn't have a protractor you could definitely also use the math to figure it out. We decided to do it for fun. 🙂
Oh man don't just cut off your muffler if the bolts are stuck on hit it with some PB Blaster and let it set over night they will bust free and add a straight pipe to replace what you took off, so you don't get carbonmonoxy in your cab as you sit at a light. not good for you.
Thank you, but don't worry it's just temporary. We don't let the car sit for too long on idle. And when we trail our windows are mostly open. We're planning to redo the exhaust system down the road to tuck it back in once we get our 4inch lift dialed in. Since we were going to replace it all anyways, we just decided to chop it off for fun, but also did not want to let the exhaust fumes exit at the connection
There’s no snap. Thanks, Vanessa. Also, T30 isn’t the most common size Torx but a decent drill accessory kit should have a variety of them. Along with a 6 in 1 screwdriver, most of the smaller/ interior trim pieces come off easily
I am a big fan of mufflers. Not the weight or the bulk, but the result. I like the rumble and bass and power of engines (I'm a red blooded guy after all) but I also appreciate that all that power exists with the muffler ON and I like my vehicles light, quiet, and efficient. Yea, same with my motorcycle. I know this puts me at odds with many many folks but I think the scaring the animals analogy is a good one. And sometimes the animals have two legs, whether at the apartment at 4 a.m. or the Campsite or trail. But it's all good. You probably want to put SOME sort of an end on that exoust (I've been trying to remember how to spell this word for about 20 years), like a spark arrestor, or something to give the engine at least a little bit of back pressure, and you said you had a plan. To each their own. Loved the math, I used to do a lot of shop math including the trig when I worked in a shipyard and I had people coming to me literally all day to figure stuff out for them (including a few engineers). I should have been getting engineers pay. Another way to do this for the math challenged is to simply find the angle with a straight edge and measure it with a protractor or Compass.
Hi Databyter! Love these long, lengthy comments! Thank you for watching and really giving thorough feedback. Its much appreciated! Ya I know muffler deletes, and or exhaust upgrades arn't for everyone but there are definitely some who are interested in what the vehicle sounds like without the muffler and so forth. We personally like the sound of the H6. Its a different tone than the H4 subies. Not too much rumble but more refined. Unfortunately there arn't any companies that make direct bolt on aftermarket mufflers for this year outback. i've heard an H6 outback without the muffler before and liked the sound overall so decided to do it to mine as well. yes the noise can be much for some and agree its not for everyone. But we are looking into getting a universal performance exhaust. More tone, not as loud but still beefy. A good thing about removing the muffler is improved rear ground clearance. less things to catch on rocks and on top of that some weight savings. At that time we never made it clear what direction we were going with out outback. I should have included a statement of us planning to build this as an offroad/overland rig. so the extra weight savings for chairs, is a plus. Also... we are planning to go with a 4 inch lift kit anyways and would have to drop the exhaust. Thats when ill redo the whole exhaust from cat back. instead of just spacing out the exhaust, we want to tuck it up into the car with the lift for the ground clearance. Thank you for appreciating the math. Yes we could have definitely simplified the math with measurements. But we figured this might be fun to do and to be honest we didnt feel like buying extra measuring tools so we did math the long way. we had no protractor, straight edge or compass >.
Loved the cheap mods, especially number 5. I actually found your channel by way of the 5 cheap mods challenge. One thing to be aware of with approach angle I want to mention. The bar where your skid pad or plastic under tray connects is the first place to catch with steep approach angles (seen at 2:42). Removing the bumper definitely helps at the outer edge, but the center can get caught. Learned this one last year in the Alabama Hills when my passenger wheel hit a low spot and I grounded out. It was one of those down then slight dip back up situations, and the angle meant I couldn't back out easily. Took the bumper off and found I had dug in right where the skid plate started. Got pulled out of that one because rear tires were shoved up into the wheel well and I couldn't back up.
Wooow thank you for that information! Ya I figured that we should measure from that part of the car because it could be more vulnerable to situations such as the one you experienced. Didn't really think it would be true but I'm definitely glad you shared that with me cuz now I'll be extra cautious even tho I have a skid plate waiting to be installed!
Why spend all that time with complex arithmetic when you can use basic logic and a stick. Obviously if you take the lip off the bumper you will increase your clearance.
To be honest we were bored and wanted some general numbers to prove the obvious. It's always good to know and take measurements of what makes an improvement to your vehicle whenever you do modifications that way you know for sure your getting what you want. My wife actually enjoys doing arithmetic like this so she didn't mind 😂 either way it was fun for us and you could always skip that part of the video for the result. 😊
@@therootedprogress good way to teach math in school. Make it amazing and give kid's a few good things to think about. I love to cook, and that takes maths. Sorry I didn't mean to sound rude. I did a muffler delete on my old 1995 Legacy L sedan. I was asked MANY times if it was WRX swapped. (Just intake, exhaust, plugs, wires, etc.) She snapped crackled and popped, especially on downshifts.
Thanks for the input and the subscribe! We are definitely working on optimizing our audio. Prolly for videos like these well do a a lav setup. I also just recently invested in a secondary camera and compared the audio between the two with our current mic. The other camera works better for the audio than the one I used in this video. We'll have better audio for sure in our upcoming videos. Stay tuned and we appreciate the support!!
@H R C Young Timers lol no I definitely agree with the clearance. With removing my bumpers, I'm prolly a bit closer to stock forester approach and departure angles lol 😆
Kinda curious how you're gonna pass smog with cutting off that muffler..maybe they don't care, I've never tried to do a smog without a muffler but that is cool. Never would've thought to just full on go no muffler. I watched another video on mods that are relatively cheap. Some great ideas would be to add on some anti rain deflector plastic trims to all your doors and your mirrors. Another idea would be since you're climbing, maybe get some mud flaps clipped behind your tires if you haven't yet. I have the same car, same color and everything. Mine is way more beaten up, it needs a paint job and some hours of body work for all the dents. Many more mods to come.
Many people modify and or replace their exhaust compnonents. Our emissions are mainly concerned with the catalytic converters working and or being present. I already passed smog with this muffler delete. However, this mod can attract more cops and can lead to a ticket due to how loud your car is. Note that the resonator in this car is soooo big the car is only moderately loud on acceleration and is easy to control how loud it is with the throttle. My car is the loudest at 3k rpm. Depending on the foot pedal input our vehicle upshifts pretty fast which tones down the exhaust as I'm passing by cops. So far we havnt had a problem. But full exhaust coming down the road. I havnt decided if I want mudflaps yet. They tend to get caught on rocks and ripped off. If it were a rally car I would totally get some 😊 thanks for sharing some more good ideas!
@@therootedprogress the other day some jackwagon was going 5mph on a 25mph street so I passed them and when I revd it, I heard that roar for the first time. I had just bought it off my uncle for $50. Only issues were there was dirt in the seal of the tire and the rear main seal needs to be replaced. I guess the car isn't the exact same, mine is an 01 instead of an 02. I might take my exhaust off. I somewhat know the sheriff in town and I'll see if it's legal in Cali. If so, I'll give it a go. I'm turning it into a hunting rig. Definitely need to get the bumper in the front deleted and the rear needs to be repaired, it's hanging off. I haven't looked into it quite yet but I want to actually get those painted black, get the badges custom replaced and the logo too. I don't think I'll need a lift. I'm gonna go with a roof rack and I have other plans too on the list. Insulation, custom upholstery, better suited wheels, I was gonna see about fitting a different engine in..so on. Anyway, badass man, really cool video
@@GhostHxrTe mine has the H6 so it doesn't growl as loud as the 4cylinder subies with no muffler or exhaust. Make sure not to remove the whole piping. Open headers is a ticket for sure. Mine is essentially a muffler delete without adding a pipe. All the way to the back. The muffler doesn't affect emmisions not cause more pollutants to go into the air. It's mainly to reduce the decibals of the sound. Hence the word muffler. It muffles the sound. So as long as it's not over the CA sound requirement then your fine to remove the muffler. It's safer to just add on an aftermarket muffler if your worried about a ticket or it not being legal in ca. Maybe your city rules may differ. So it would be nice to check in with your local sheriff. If your going to make it into a hunting rig, you'll just need a good set of all terrain tires and don't need to size up like I have. Keep your bumpers and no need to upgrade the exhaust unless it's falling apart.
Yea, being calif I'm surprised it passed. Smog requires original equipment, not just the cat. So some folks get lucky. But a noise ticket could attract the dmv and the bar, beureau of automotive repair.
You need to learn how to normalize your levels. One second you can hear you just fine, the next you can hardly hear you, the next you're way too loud, rinse and repeat. Normalize your levels nobody wants to have to keep turning the volume up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down.
Thank you for the feedback and we apologize for that. Honestly, we arnt paid professionals and we're just working with what we have. To be fair I have tried to optimize the audio as best as I could given the fact with no lav mic and the mic being attached to the camera and filming in an apt parkingnlot. Definitely audio is our biggest struggle, but we're always looking to improve with each video. You can see it from my very first Crosstrek review to my latest, how much we have improved. I will admit I do need to do a better job of speaking to the camera whenever I do speak to optimize the sound pick up. With all that said, does the inconsistency in volume continue to happen as bad as this video in my other videos?
I challenged softroadingthewest so I'm glad to see the challenge going forward! Do you still have that OEM muffler? I would love to have it for the wife's VDC Baja project.
Yesss I watched both of your guy's videos. Yours was really helpful. If i ever need to I would definitely do that caribiner mod haha. Let's see how long this can continue going on for. I still do. It rides passenger for now cuz I don't have a garage lol. But yes if you'd like you guys can have it. IDK how j would be able to get it all the way out there to you? Btw what's your IG name? Im sure you have one but I couldn't find you on Instagram. That way I could add your details to my description.
I always have a soft spot for the Gen 2 Beans. They just make such good dailies. I don't have an Instagram. TH-cam and the Forum is enough social media for me. I'll shoot you an email about the muffler. Thanks!
Sick!! Yaaa I've thought about that but was also looking into those platform racks for the modularity. Definitely a good idea either way! Wished I had been able to mention that as an added tip for viewers. 👍 I'll pin this comment
Which means yo are exceeding the payload rating of the car, and most of it is up high really negatively impacting your center of gravity. Not a good idea. It's a subi, not a superduty.
Per google, the 02 OB payload is 890 to 1,130 lbs. Therefore he's not exceeding his payload rating. The outback already has a lower center of gravity with the slimmer roofline. Adding things to the roof just makes it a Forester at this point. Sooo although anything mounted to the roof does negatively impact any cars center of gravity, so does lifting your car. So go tell everyone who has lifted their vehicle that 🤣 the subi still has a lower center of gravity lifted plus the stuff on the roof than a super duty. Next time use google it helps sometimes..
Lol, there isnt any recommendation on roof weight, but now they do with the new wilderness edition. However, our roof has tolerated a 150lbs rtt with me and my wife in it. Which is an additional 350lbs. So 500lbs total. I don't really see anyone else putting more than that on the roof.
Seriously. I'm still waiting on a better roof rack situation. Since we run a roof top tent I don't think those vintage oem bars will hold up to the weight. Had some yakima's but their not to aerodynamic. They are to some degree but stick up way too high and my roof rack would hit the ceiling of the entrances to parking garages 😣 So looking into a custom prinsu style roof rack
@@therootedprogress nice I put a UEL on my ‘05 outback, new cats cause I needed them. And it was a little short to had to us a crush donut to close the gap. It has nice little Subaru rumble coming from the gap. When I finally closed that gap I got sad. After watching your video I feel like taking both my mufflers off. No emissions requirements here in Washington. And the decibel requirement is not enforced in Tacoma, WA
@@Truckerraf yaaa definitely all you need to get that classic subie rumble is the uel headers. If that's the case you could prolly just remove the mufflers. That'll bring back the sound. Even tho u closed the gap in sure it'll still rumble. Just need to free up the sound with removing the muffler.
That's what I understood as well. As long as approach angle improved... Better chances of not breaking something. This model is prone to busting the radiator support, and or cracking the radiator off-road due to low approach angle
Actually, the resonator is so large on this model subaru that it's barely noticeable from day to day. Planning to re do the whole exhaust eventually with the improved ground clearance.
Whenever you do any mod you just simply swap it back over. Then when you pass simply switch it back. All up to you how extensive you go. So far no issues with smog. We passed last year as is. Muffler delete doesn't do anything to emission. It does as it says it does .. muffle sound. It's just for acoustics.
Bolts were straight seized and rusted over. Also didn't like the end of the exhaust to end that close the the other car part. The cut off point gets it right past the diff and still keeps the heat from the exhaust past the rear lateral links. If we just unbolted it, it could have had more excessive where and tear on the surround parts due to the direct heat from the exhaust.
the.rooted. progress thank you you’re awesome I’m just looking for something to have to add bike racks after someone said an auto store might have universal cross bars
No problem man! Happy to help whenever I can! But yes... The amazon ones might be your best bet. They have a variety of different universal mounts which you should definitely be able to find something on there that will fit your vehicle. And if your just gonna be mounting bikes the load shouldn't matter much. So you should be good 👍
You need something to replace the muffler. Having the exhaust end ahead of the rear bumper is muy malo. You are asking for carbon monoxide poisoning. Hard to believe your neighbors tolerate the noise.
Yup we've replaced the muffler. But it never was too loud. Cops never batted an eye at the outback. If this were a frs brz sti wrx.... then That'd be a different story. Overall, it's an outback and people think grandma car. So when they hear anything, it's usually the last car they suspect lol 😆 😂 And yes, we've replaced the muffler now. She is quieter than oem haha 😄
Definitely not recommended for CA. Yes you could get a ticket for it but it's more for sure if you remove your catalytic converters. Do far no issues. The exhaust is tucked in to the vehicle and not obnoxiously loud. I have driven directly in front of officers and drove past em. No issues. As long as your not driving like a dumbass your fine. We are planning to re-due our exhaust system setup. So this was just a quick free mod to see what we need to do to improve the sound and flow. Thanks for watching 👍
There's shortcuts to everything in life. Up to you whether you want to take that road or not. When in doubt, it's always better to have than to have not done something. We live and we learn. And if we are not living then we aren't learning. We're not perfect nor do we think of ourselves in that way.
5th mod is an aesthetic mod. But it's a joke if you get it. Also, if you look closely, the license plate frame doesn't cover the plate number. 1:06 Let me know if it's still obstructing your vision.
Are you guys serious? What are you trying to accomplish? Just buy a 4WD if that's what you want. Cutting off the muffler is just dumb. Ruined that car and voided your insurance with those mods.
It's basically the same as added a muffler delete (exhaust) but free... Also, a rear diff locker is installed on it now and it does pretty well for not being 4wd. Gets better gas mileage. Reason we don't get a 4wd because we're not rock crawling. We want it as capable as possible but not looking into being as capable as a true 4x4. We don't need it. We just want to be more capable than the typical cuv without the 4wd. It'll be interesting how far this thing goes.

Nice made me smile
Australian primary school kid with a stick and a protractor just worked out the angle in 10 seconds
Lol yes you can totally do it that waym wish we had a protractor but if in case you didn't this is another way 😂
Why spend all that time with complex arithmetic when you can use basic logic and a stick.

I was asked MANY times if it was WRX swapped.

Awesome info! Just couldn't hear what was being said much. You need mics.
Buy a Forester mate! 😅
Had a forester before the outback, but the transmission was no good 😕
@@therootedprogress yes I have one and I got repaired 2 times 😅
But the distance to the ground is better for some terrains
Me, wants to cut muffler, also me trying to get liscense and super stickt parents
Stop saying "like".
Good video. Thanks.
Lol working on it ☺️
I used to drive a car with half the exhaust missing and there was almost a vehicle fire eventually. Lots of stuff inside melted . Be careful fam

Love video only thing is on mod 2 you removed the bummer cover
Ya I should rephrase that.
i muffler deleted my 03 outback and it sound BEAUTIFUL! everyone that own a subi need to cut that thing off 😂😂
You need to learn how to normalize your levels.

I run 4 cross bars on my 02 OB LLBean, and I have a lot more support and strapping options by doing that. I've had almost 800 pounds on my roof!
Guys chopping off mufflers and hauling 800lbs on the roof rack? Something is not right with many Subaru owners.
BTW, I am calling B.S on the 800lbs.
I’m crying I had the same cross bar problem
Seriously. I'm still waiting on a better roof rack situation. Since we run a roof top tent I don't think those vintage oem bars will hold up to the weight.
Had some yakima's but their not to aerodynamic. They are to some degree but stick up way too high and my roof rack would hit the ceiling of the entrances to parking garages 😣
So looking into a custom prinsu style roof rack
Is this for used outbacks? I bought mine new in 05 and mine is the ll bean edition.
It might not fit your application mine is a 00-04 llbean
You left on resonator?
Yupp only thing removed was the muffler. Planning to clean it up with a high flow resonator and new performance muffler
I have no power tools, next clip has a power tool
Lol we ended up buying it from the store that day 😂
Just get an angle tool and use a string. No need to get into calculus
Lol it was just for fun. ☺️
Simple math, it will climb over more crap without breaking. Got it. -welder
That's what I understood as well. As long as approach angle improved... Better chances of not breaking something. This model is prone to busting the radiator support, and or cracking the radiator off-road due to low approach angle
You have the best plate, so many interpretations it could be hahaha but only those that know...know...
Yaaa for those who know... Know buuhhh those who don't. We'll just say it's foreshadowing for future videos :)
I'm sure your neighbors will love that half exhaust :/
Actually, the resonator is so large on this model subaru that it's barely noticeable from day to day. Planning to re do the whole exhaust eventually with the improved ground clearance.
All you did was cut stuff off? Good luck with no muffler. How's that going to pass inspection
Why not unbolt the muffler vs cutoff?
Bolts were straight seized and rusted over. Also didn't like the end of the exhaust to end that close the the other car part. The cut off point gets it right past the diff and still keeps the heat from the exhaust past the rear lateral links. If we just unbolted it, it could have had more excessive where and tear on the surround parts due to the direct heat from the exhaust.
Keep original!!! Major no to the muffler chop job and an even bigger no to the noise
Hey if you guys want to get rid of that bumper I'll take it I'm missing front and back😅
Awww darn... I just got rid of em not to long ago 😅 sorry man!

Hard to hit the Rev limiter when the speed limit is 25mph. 😟

Where can I buy crossbars??
If your looking for OEM on an older gen subie u may have to check the junkyard. U can also find real cheap ones on Amazon
the.rooted. progress thank you you’re awesome I’m just looking for something to have to add bike racks after someone said an auto store might have universal cross bars
No problem man! Happy to help whenever I can! But yes... The amazon ones might be your best bet. They have a variety of different universal mounts which you should definitely be able to find something on there that will fit your vehicle.
And if your just gonna be mounting bikes the load shouldn't matter much. So you should be good 👍
Math !!
So when they hear anything, it's usually the last car they suspect lol 😆 😂
And yes, we've replaced the muffler now. She is quieter than oem haha 😄

literally sound like a lambo after the muffler delete
Ya gotta love the H6 😉
Mod 4 is definitely illegal = A ticket for that!

Why is this trig tutor talking about Subaru
The math shows evidence on how removing the front bumper improves approach angle.
Just install a lift kit, duh??????
